Fantastic rental experience! We needed a long term rental for a 6 week stay in the area and Avalon was surely the answer. The price was reasonable and the car was in great condition- pretty much new. I will keep this short and to the point. I rented a car from Avalon for a month and a half. Barry was very helpful in helping me find the most economical option for my requirements, which was a compact sedan. The car was not brand new but did not give me the slightest trouble. The price was very reasonable. You might come across a cheaper DEAL if you are lucky, but for regular pricing, I doubt whether anybody else comes close. And last but not the least, no hidden charges. You pay only what you agreed to in the lease (or even verbally). In my case, Barry even allowed me the flexibility of returning the car late by a couple of days and adding an extra driver, all at no extra cost (eventually, I ended up not using either of those). I thought of going for short term lease after looking at the good reviews here and I ended up feeling sorry for myself and decided that I'll never go for cheap short term rentals ever again. I just moved to Corona,CA for temporary project and decided to get a short term month-to-month lease as it was cheaper than regular rentals like Hertz.I contacted Barry and he was helpful in completing the Paper work and promised that he will arrange the car for me. After I completed the paper work, he tells me that I need to go to Oceanside(64 mi. from Corona) to pickup the car. I thought I will go through it since its a one time thing and I can still save some money. So I take a train to Oceanside and then a cab from Oceanside to Carlsbad where the car is. A gentleman just pointed me to a distant car and handed me the keys. I could see that is was an old model Corolla. I thought that isn't a big deal. And then I got into the car.... I gotta say I was greatly disappointed after going through all the trouble of going all the way to Oceanside to get this car. It's an old model car(2008) and it's down right dirty, not even vacuumed. There was hair and leaves every where.The car stank so bad that I couldn't even take a deep breath. I tried to talk to the guy who handed me the keys but he just told me, "if you have anything..talk to Barry". I tried to call Barry but he wasn't answering his phone. So I sent an email to Barry and I got the reply the following day asking me to take it to a car wash and get it detailed, he was willing to pay the cost, but I thought it wasn't fair to rent a car to someone in that condition. His explanation was that the previous guy who rented the car told Barry, he got it detailed and Barry didn't know the car's condition. So, that means Avalon was renting out the car without even checking the condition of the car. Anyways, I took the car to a car wash got it detailed and Barry paid the money for it. I also asked him if returning the car is going to be this much of trouble too, and he stated that he will arrange a convenient return of the car. Like I said I just moved to CA and I didn't have a CA DL. Barry wanted me to apply for a CA drivers license for his paperwork. So I scheduled a CA DMV driving test appointment and went to DMV to take the test. When I went there I found out that the insurance that Barry provided is not valid. So, I called up Barry to ask him the same. I couldn't believe his response...."You should have told me before going to the DMV". Its been 15 days days since I rented that car and I was driving without proper insurance for which I had specifically paid $200 per month. I was tired or talking to him and decided to take the driving test using a one day rental from Hertz. Finally the time came when my project ended and had to return the car. My project end date was 1 week over the month. So I asked Barry if he would prorate the rental for the additional one week or if he wants me to return the car exactly at the end of the month. He said I can keep it for the additional week and return it. I thought it was considerate of him. So the day came when I had to return the car, and I asked him how do I do it. Guess what, he says that I have to go back all the way to Oceanside to return the car. I asked him about the promise he made for a convenient return. He said he cannot arrange a convenient return as I didn't keep the car for at least six months(Even though it was a month-to-month rental to begin with). Anyways, I decided to get it over with and returned the car to a Service Center in Carlsbad as per his request. 10 days later, he sends me the final bill for the additional 6 days and he charges me $40 per day which was supposed to be only $25 per day if he prorated the original agreed rental amount. I would have gotten a well maintained 2011/2012 Corolla from Hertz with insurance for $40/day. So, please think twice before renting from this company especially if you're far away from their office. read more

I was moving and on a serious time constraint. I needed a reliable one-way rental to get me from San Francisco to San Diego, and I'm a student so money is tight. I called countless rental companies (Hertz, Dollar, Thrifty, Budget, Enterprise, Rent-a-Wreck) and their quotes for a monthly rental were extremely high, even with my USAA discount! I was freaking out, until I found Avalon Transportation on Craigslist. Barry and his associate, Jeff, were lifesavers. They were so nice and understanding of my rental needs. Barry got me set up quickly with a super clean, nice vehicle. He will even sell you a vehicle if you need one (and I do!). His prices are really great all around, and he gives you a couple different mileage plans to choose from. We had a group of about 20 people and used the shuttle three different times in the San Francisco area over the course of about a week. Avalon made it very easy to book everything, and all of the drivers we interacted with were very professional and punctual. Avalon went above and beyond and informed us ahead of time of some potential traffic issues related to the St. Patrick's Day Parade, which meant we were able to modify our reservation to better fit our group's needs and still get everyone to the airport on time. I was provided a long term rental from Avalon TS for work when I was relocated to another office. The vehicle was in excellent shape, ran great and maintenance was easily taken care of. Never rent from Avalon Transportation. When I made the reservation in May, I went in-person to office and asked for weekly rental for a mini-van and they gave me a quote of $374+tax. When I picked up the car on July 19th, I was told the total would be $599+tax. $599 is way more expensive than renting from costcotravel. When I objected to the "bait-and-switch", the person who was preparing the papers told me that, I was given a wrong quote when I booked the van and this would be the price and the guy gave me a smart answer saying "its okay if you don't want the car". I was there to pick up for my vacation that i'm leaving for in 2 hrs and what am I supposed to do?. I had to go thru with the rental. He said, since there was some mix-up, he will not charge me for taxes that is on top of $599. Seeing how pissed-off I was, he said, he will credit me for $50. Anyway, I took the trip and decided to deal with it when i came back. I dropped off the car 7 days later and asked them again to sort it out. This time they invented a new reason. The reason for my high-rental price is because, I got a Toyota Sienna instead of a Dodge. I infact got a 2010 base model Sienna that was no better than Dodge. In any case, which rental company gives different quotes based on car brands? (unless you pick a luxury car and they definitely do not do that for a minivan!) . If I book through any reputable rental, they will always say something like "Toyota Sienna or similar". I do not care what type of car it is especially if I was told before hand that the prices are different (When I booked the person told me they have a fleet for 2013 Seinnas with bluetooth, back-up camera and the whole nine-yards so, I said, okay I prefer to have that. However I DID NOT get that, I got a old sienna - I did not complain about it as, its no big deal). During this discussion he was asking me out of the blue whether I took the car outside the state lines. Apparently, I drove 2000 miles which is unusual for instate driving. Are you kidding me?. He was trying justify his mistakes by grabbing on to anything that he can blame me for (anyway, I was in SanDiego and told him I can show the 7-day condo rental document). Bottom line, this is a shady company to rent from. When I booked, I checked Yelp and they had lot of positive reviews but, when I checked now, many 5 star reviews have disappeared. Not sure if they were planted to originally. Save yourself a headache and rent from Costco (which was quoting me $514 including everything when I was booking through Avalon - because Avalon quoted me lesser price). They are not trustworthy and a pain to deal with. I usually do not write reviews but, I was compelled to write this one. read more
