Rather than dividing labor so that they have someone at register, someone at coffee making, and someone boxing ordered items, Azúcar has one person doing all three tasks. I had been meaning to try out Azucar for quite some time, and an invitation to dinner at my friend's house with a request to bring dessert turned out to be quite the perfect occasion. Anyway, I stopped in Azucar during my lunch hour around 12:15 on a Wednesday afternoon. I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I didn't know if I would buy a whole cake or pie, or a bunch or cookies, or some random desserts. When I entered, I felt really confused. There were customers walking all over, several employees that we could see in the back, and one walking into the front. She then said, "Whoever's next". The person looked confused and the employee said, "Go ahead". Well, I waited an watched, as there were no prices on many of the items and descriptions were minimal. I walked around to the front register after looking at the desserts in the side dessert case, and I saw a price list, but that was confusing too. Anyway, I got a general idea how much things would cost. I chose four desserts that looked big enough to share. Anyway, I brought them to dinner, and everyone loved them. It was great to have a variety, and we cut them in several pieces to share. I tried a small portion of each. They were all delicious. My favorites of the four were the Dark Corner, which was a decadent dark chocolate dessert, and the Little Havana which was a bright pastel color with dulce de leche in the center. All in all, Azucar was a great choice for dessert and I would definitely go back. However, it would be nice if I had been greeted and if the staff there would have shared information about the desserts. I did not feel that the employee I spoke to wanted to be there, nor had any interest in the product she was selling. I also don't know why there were so many employees standing in back with customers waiting in front. I think the food is great, but customer service could be improved. read more

Horrible staff. Extremely rude. We went to purchase some pastries on a Saturday morning. We waited in the usual line (which takes approximately 10-15 mins, sometimes longer sometimes shorter). We ended up purchasing $60 in baked goods and two coffees. The staff member who checked us out didn't provide any ticket to the baristas. We ended up waiting for over 20 mins waiting for our drinks. When I went and asked about them, the barista was extremely rude and confrontational. When I had expressed that I had been waiting and didn't understand how they couldn't have a ticket for my drinks when it's on the receipt. She barked at me that I should have figure this out sooner and that I should have come back to speak with someone sooner instead of waiting. Which is very hard to determine because of the number of orders going through. Unfortunately she was very unpleasant and rude through our interaction. A few more drinks were made before ours eventually came out. When we mentioned that we needed napkins the same staff member rudely said "did you even check the napkin container? (WHICH WAS EMPTY!) If you don't want to be courteous to customers, then you shouldn't be working customer service. Needless to say we won't be going back to Azucar or endorsing them in any capacity. Such an adorable little place. Walking in you are greeted warmly by the staff and also by the delicious looking cakes. Everything was so tempting. We decided to try the Little Havana cake and also a passion fruit raspberry scone. Once we procured our pastries we settled ourselves outside to indulge. The Little Havana cake was really rich. It is a rum soaked white cake with dulce du leche and vanilla frosting. Splitting it was a great decision because it saved room for another treat. The dulce du leche was smooth and had great flavor the cake itself was light and fluffy and paired really well with the vanilla frosting. It was a great little treat. The passionfruit raspberry scone was light and had a nice balance between sweet and tart. You could really taste both the passionfruit and raspberry flavors. When coming to ocean beach this is a great place to grab some treats to take to the beach or just indulge in the cafe. DIABLO - chocolate mousse, cocoa brittle on a chocolate cake base. It's beautiful to look at! It sounds and looks extremely rich and chocolatey where you'd think one bite would require a glass of milk (but a glass of milk wouldn't hurt!)... well it's not. It wasn't that rich but it was chocolatey if you know what I mean. The chocolate cake wasn't too dry nor too moist and it was covered with the chocolate mousse which gave the cake more moisture if you think it needed it. The cocoa brittle was not sweet, it was that monotone chocolate. I have been to Azucar several time, and every time it's amazing! I always try something new and have never been disappointed. Now that I have been a few times, I use their online ordering because it can get pretty busy in the mornings. Their coffee is delicious and more reasonably priced than a lot of coffee shops. The cortadito is my favorite! With their food, they have sweet and savory options - some healthy, some not (but that's okay when they are so good!) The scones are always good, and the minis are very popular when I order them for an event. Last time I got the sour cherry pistachio tart, and it was to die for. The employees are always very welcoming, and the display cases are quite a sight to see. Already looking forward to my next visit! read more

Fantastic pastries and great service. I didn't know that this place is reminiscent of Porto's until I started reading the reviews but I can tell there is a general consensus that Porto's is better in terms of taste and price. But without that in mind and coming in with an unbiased perspective, I thought the bakery offered wonderful options and they were all great. I got the guava cheese danish and strawberry pistachio scone. The danish was super flakey and buttery. I liked how the cream cheese and guava filling wasn't too sweet. The strawberry pistachio scone was also delicious and it was a crunchy crumble on top that was incredible. I took home some of the fancier pastries and got a cake and key lime pie tart. The cake was supposed to taste almost like pina colada and it was super moist and coconutty. Definitely on the sweeter and heavier side. I would say the same about the tart. I would definitely come back here for the pastries. The flavors are unique and they all look super appealing. Azúcar was a wonderful and welcome find on a rainy day. I was in the area recently during heavy rains and was eager to get out of the downpour. I'd never say no to dessert either! I found this place on Yelp and saw the rave reviews. As a huge fan of Cuban food (man do I miss Porto's), I knew I had to pay Azúcar a visit. My friends and I spent far too long pouring over their selection of cakes and pastries, assisted by the friendly staff, before finally settling on a passion fruit cake smothered in torched marshmallow. The cake was $9, and larger than it appears at first glance! My friends and I split it and it was a good amount for the three of us. The cake itself is fairly dense, with a thick layer of passion fruit curd in between two cake pieces. The torched marshmallow gives the whole thing a slightly charred, sweet flavor. Is it just me, or is brûléed ANYTHING, savory, sweet, or a mix of the two, absolutely delicious??! Anyways, between that and the passion fruit, this is an intensely flavored confection. There was a pretty edible flower on top as well as two blackberries, though they were sour. My only complaint about Azúcar was that one of the workers there kept banging something hard against the counter. And I mean HARD. Once upon a time, my fiance struck up a conversation with a lady at Trader Joe's who turned out to be owner of Azucar. Since we love Cuban pastries, we decided to check it out and for two years now, we have been loyal customers of this bakery. We truly think they can give the famous LA bakeshop a run for its money: What we usually get: Spanish latte - both iced and hot are strong and taste authentic Cheese rolls, meat pie, guava and cheese pastry, cubano pastry (pretty much like a cubano sandwich but inside a puff pastry) All are amazing and quality is always consistent. The cheese rolls are dense, cheesy, yet with a flaky and sugary exterior. The meat pie may be small but definitely don't miss it! And it's better warmed up. Came here last weekend around 10 AM and there was a line inside. The place is pretty small, just a handful of seats inside and a few outside. This spot was on our list during our SD trip when my cousin sent me an IG video that someone had posted. I ended up getting: *salted toffee oatmeal cookie - had the first bite and couldn't stop. The cookie was so soft and they put enough toffee to where it didn't taste super sweet. I would get this again. Maybe 2 next time *carrot crazy - I'm not a carrot cake fan but my husband is so I decided to get it for him. He also loves cheesecake so I thought it was perfect to try. I actually decided to try it and I'm glad I did. Husband and I took our first bites and couldn't stop eating it. The carrot cake crumble and cream cheese went well together. Not too carrot-Ty for me and the amount of cream cheese was perfect. *Turron de Havana - first look, I didn't want it because I'm not a chocolate cake lover but hazelnut caught my attention. We were craving for something sweet and savory but didn't want to go to multiple places, so we stopped by Azucar since we knew they had something that would satisfy our cravings. They have a lot of different items from pastries to meat pies. We decided to try the Cubano Pie and the Cuban Meat Pie. The cubano pie is a flaky pastry with pork, pickles, swiss cheese and mustard- it's a cubano sandwich but in a pastry! We were actually surprised how filling this was and it was definitely delcious. The cuban mean pie is a smaller pastry ball/roll filled with meat. It was pretty darn good but if we had to decide on one or the other, it would be the cubano pie. For our sweet side, we chose a pistachio passion fruit macaron. This was super tasty! The macron part was probably our favorite as the filling was a little bit too sweet for our liking. Maybe we just needed some water or coffee which would have paired perfectly with it! Too bad we didn't order drinks but we will be back again so we won't forget! Parking can be pretty tough as it is near the beach but there is plenty of parking- you might just need to walk a bit further. The line can look intimidating but don't let that scare you away. Not sure why we didn't try this sooner! Someone had told me that this place has similar taste to Portos. I haven't had portos in almost 15 years so I can't make a comparison unfortunately. There was 6 of us (including a stroller) ans we were able to sit inside. They are known for their cheese rolls but really though, everything we bought was so good. The only thing i didnt enjoy was the Espana sandwich. It was a little dry for me. If you plan to eat there, they will warm up the savory foods if you want. Also, the sandwiches they don't do until 11am. By the time we ordered and ate the other stuff, it was 11 so we were able to try the sandwiches. Would definitely come back again! Been going to this bakery for yrs now, and wish I could like it more. It's convenient because it's n y neighborhood. Most of the food and all of the drinks I've tried have been okay... not bad but more like a one and done kinda deal. Maybe I'm spoiled because I'm from Los Angeles, home of Porto's Bakery a famous family-run Cuban bakery where EVERYTHING on the menu is amazing. Seriously, you can't go to party without one of guests showing up with a box of Porto's goodies. The star of the show, which keeps me coming back from time to time is their Cubano Pie. which is similar to a Cuban or Medianoche sandwich except in a flakey, slightly sweet pastry crust that perfectly compliments the savory pork and pickles stuffed inside. My biggest problem is everytime I come in the staff seems to be in a bad mood/not friendly. One of the last times I came in Iordered a dessert online since there's always a line on Sunday mornings. I stood at the pick up section of the counter and multiple employees glanced at me, I smiled, no hellos or verbal acknowledgement.... Not even a smile back. Sadly this is what I've come to expect here, so I stood there patiently, it was busy after all. One of the staff came over to clean the display and asked if I had been acknowledged. I said no, so she told someone to help me get my pick up order. Thank you!! Since I don't come in often I opened the box when I got home and was surprised it looked smaller than I remembered. Food: Had a couple of cookies and a guava cheese roll type of pastry. 5/5. Also ordered a sandwich (Cubano); 5/5 with maybe a little extra grease but all good. Crispy bread and delicious taste overall Service/Vibes: 2-3/5. Unfortunately, the sandwich took so long (like 30 minutes or so?) that I had to ask about it and it finally came out maybe another 10 minutes later. It's basically a panini pressed deli sandwich so I didn't expect it to take that long to assemble...? Even if it's made to order it shouldn't have taken longer than 15 minutes imo.
