Ba Le Sandwich - Bakeries Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

After a suggestion from my brother of cheap eats, I headed to this place to check out the highly reviewed Vietnamese sandwiches. The line was a pretty long, but it was okay since it gave me time to peruse the menu, being a first timer here. I knew for sure I wanted a mango smoothie, and 2 to others for carry out for my aunts. I got to the counter and asked the girl at the register what was the difference between the bbq pork sandwich and the Chinese pork sandwich. She said the #10 chinese pork was the pinkish bbq pork, and the #9 was the grilled pork, and was a little better, having more flavor being marinated in lemongrass. So I took her work and chose the #9, hold the jalapenos and onions. There are only 2 tables available, but I was fortunate to grab one. My sandwich arrived fairly quickly. The bread was nice and crunchy, the vegetables also crunchy and fresh, adding an added dimension to the sandwich. The bbq pork was ok. I was surprised that it didn't have as much depth of flavor as I imagined and led to believe. Disappointing. I wonder if it was because I didn't have the onions and jalapenos. Either way, I know I will go back to try other sandwiches until I find one that fits my palette! The tapioca was less pleasing. It didn't have as much flavor as I like, and I know I share those sentiments with my aunts as they both didn't like their mango and avocado teas, as well. What a bummer, as Ba Le is right across the screen from Tank, and their bubble teas are delicious. Oh well, lesson learned. The store boasts a wonderful array of prepackaged items, some already prepared, some needing cooking. All very reasonably priced! Enough for me to come back to try some of those as well. read more

The woman with the blue framed glasses was eating and chewing with her mouth open while assembling sandwiches. Absolutely disgusting!

Pretty good Banh Mi Sandwich. I unfortunately I had to walk/ride and eat so I wasn't able to enjoy the sandwich as much as I wanted to in the Chicago heat, but I know that the tastiness was there. Decent prices and a very neat little sandwich shop. The food tastes fresh and of course the bread was awesome. There's really nothing like some perfect toasty crisp french bread around an amazing sandwich. The tasty meat. pickled veg, cilantro, jalapeno and dare I forget the Daikon all make for a great sandwich all wrapped neatly for quick on the go consumption. MMmmmm read more

Yummy! Still my favorite banh mi place but dang! Did they raise the price?? I love their macarons! So good but too sweet for my hubby. By the way, they don't taste as good 2 days later so don't save them like me and gobble it all up in one go. They added more seatings but it is still pretty crowded on weekends. read more

I love Banh Mi sandwiches, and I have long been wanting to visit Ba Le to try theirs. We visited for a Saturday lunch, and I ended up ordering the #9 BBQ pork banh and a strawberry bubble tea smoothie. The BBQ pork sandwich was delicious and a great value. The bread was flaky and fresh. The bubble tea smoothie was also excellent. I love the grocery area of this restaurant as well. Well done! Overall, Ba Le is a solid Vietnamese sandwich shop. read more

I stumbled across Ba Le Bakery after a dance session in Chicago, and I'm SO glad I did! So far, they serve the best vegetarian banh mi (fried tofu sandwich) I've had in the Chicago area! In fact, I still dream about its delightful combination of crispy contents complemented by its crunchy fresh bread! Since Ba Le offers a "buy 5, get 1 free deal", it's tempting to order a week's worth of banh mi! That way, I can have all the veggie banh mi I want for 6 days! Also, get the Vietnamese iced coffee. read more

This place is very Vietnamesey, if that is up in your alley, whereas a good number of places in Viet Town are Chinese/Thai/Vietnamese mixed. This place is young, hip and clean. However, when you open the first set of doors to come in, a HUUUUGE pho/banh mi smell looms out. A buddhist altar is set in the space between the first and second door, if you look down, you will see it. When you walk in, you forget about the smell pretty quickly because what sets this place apart is instead of a super hole in the wall beaten down restaurant, it is hip, modern and fairly clean. There are refridgerators everywhere, all in glass display. You can pick up any of the pre-made items, including vietnamese sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaves, vietnamese sticky rice with grilled chicken or pork, vermicelli, taro with coconut milk, shrimp puff on a stick. Everything looks amazingly delicious. If you get thirsty, order a drink, drink menu is to the left of the store separated from the rest of the menus. You can order tea for $1.50 or a bubble tea smoothie for $3.50. They also have fruit puree smoothie for $3.95. My bubble tea smoothie came out in a Bah Le labeled cup with a Bah Le sealed on plastic cover. Straws are wrapped, you can ask for a second straw for free, so great for sharing. The only thing I dislike about this place is the store clerks are a bit rude. They do not smile nor do they act like they enjoy their job. When you ask them a question, the just hand you whatever you asked for, would not answer yes or no. Which is fine, you come here to mingle with friends anyway, not the workers. Imagine a Froyo store but filled with Vietnamese goodies, that is this place. read more

Ba Le Sandwich - #1 classic. Wanted #4 but lady still messed up my order - Bakeries Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

Stopped in randomly for lunch and got the vegan banh mi. Flavors were nice, but I was turned off by the tough, chewy mushrooms that were impossible to eat (I pulled them out thinking it was tough lemongrass or something that they forgot to take out--but it was truly meant to be the main part of the sandwich, really rather disgusting). For the price, $12, it was not worth it. And the service was rather slow, too waiting several minutes to even be greeted by the cashier, who was looking down at the computer fixing something for a bit and I wasn't sure if he saw/heard me in front of him. I was the first of a long lunch rush and it was odd how, despite being the first of many orders, it seemed that they were batching all the sandwiches so I had to wait until mine was called along with the family of 4 behind me (even though I saw it there ready to be given to me). I noticed the cashier would disappear, leaving customers standing there with to-go items, or simply waiting to order, for a while. Some people just left since it wasn't clear what was going on. It all seemed a bit disorganized. I think I'll keep shopping around. read more

The place looks clean and inviting. It is more pricier than other places for both the banh mi and other desserts. Drinks were fairly reasonable. Cashier was very nice. I ordered the "Special" - 5 for 1 banh mis. I got the beef, bbq pork, and dac biet. Cashier asked if I wanted the veggies on the side or in the sub, I said sub. This is the first time I encountered this question. After I got home, I realized that the veggies were in a separate bag, but I thought it could be extra. IT WASNT. The subs did not have the veggies in them and there wasnt even enough veggies for 6 subs! The pork and beef were plain and were not tasty at all. Not have the veggies could of ruined my experience and it I didnt taste the fish sauce at all. I will not be going back when I visit Chicago again. I would recommend they put the veggies in the subs as a default and the customer should state that they do not want it. The fresh cilantro and pickled veggies are part of the banh mi taste. The bread was good though - it is a different texture from other banh mis. More american sub like than the flaky crust Im accustomed to. Holla read more

Meatball and BBQ Pork Banh Mi are my favorite sandwiches in the city. Perfect crunch and pickled veggies. Never gets old. I recommend a side of the beef brisket noodle soup (like Pho) to dip the Banh Mi in. The rice, salad, tea and market items all look delicious too, I just can't bring myself to get anything else. Not sure if they still have a "Buy 6 for 5" deal on the Banh Mi. read more

This is my favorite banh mi place in Chicago. The bread is perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Definitely try the grilled pork Banh mi. It's the best. read more

Yeah, I don't actually know what Banh Mi (or Bahn Mi, depending on the spellings I see) is. I could probably look it up, but I'm sorta lazy. All I can say is the BBQ Pork sandwich I got was delicious. The bread was particularly tasty. It also only cost me like $3.75. And the place seemed clean and the people were nice. I will be going back. read more

I want to give it a 5 stars but I don't think I can only because I only come to Ba Le Bakery in Chicago (on Broadway and Argyle) only for their Banh Mi's (Viet subs). It's SO good. Since I don't live in Chicago, I would buy about 3 or 4 and save it for lunches and dinners. You have to eat them pretty fast otherwise they get hard. I have never gotten anything else off the menu so I can't tell you how the rest of the food is. If you are thinking about getting Viet Subs - go to Ba Le Bakery. It's good. read more

So after watching the Great Food Truck Race and seeing the Nom Nom Truck, I was on a mission to try some great vietnamese sandwiches just like the ones on the Nom Nom Truck. I got there around 7PM and it had a few people, not too busy which was surprising. I did like the decor, modern and cute. I wouldn't say it was very clean though. There was trash here and there and there was SO much crumbs and pieces of food on tables. The whole time I was there, I did not see a worker come out to wipe down the tables. I asked the cashier guy what he recommended and he said the Ba Le Special, so I ordered that along with the Thai ice tea, shrimp spring rolls, and my bf ordered the roast beef. Shrimp spring rolls = MEH. I could make my own and it would taste the same or even better. They were pre-made and who knows how long it's been out on the fridge? Ba Le Special= I just hated it. I don't like the bread and I hated how the meat all tasted together. It just didn't mesh well. I had to get fish sauce to cover up the taste. I ended up just eating half of my sandwich. Roast Beef= Luckily my bf was nice to share his with mine and it tasted alot better than mine. A little too spicy, who eats raw jalepenos?! Fire in my mouth! Thai ice tea = pretty yummy but very similar to Joy Yees Thai ice tea. But atleast the ice tea tasted better than the sandwich. Overall, I don't think I'd come back here again, maybe try a different vietnamese sandwich. My Nom Nom dreams were crushed after this experience. read more

Definitely a must stop when you're in the area! The shop was renovated. Inside is a little small with limited seating but it has a fresh, hip feel. The sandwiches are made to order. You may have to wait 5+ minutes for it but it's well worth it. Every time I go, there's 3-4 people who order over 10 sandwiches each. Sounds crazy but it's really good! Price of each sandwich is inexpensive - less than $4. I usually grab 2-3 Ba Le Specials and the BBQ Pork. It's absolutely delicious. The bread is the right consistency - crunching on the outside and soft on the inside. The filling is generous not like pre-made ones I've seen else where. read more

Great Food. Great Price. Friendly Service. Wow, I cant believe I havent written a review for this place. I have been coming here for years! Their sandwiches are the most authentic, fresh, and cheap you can find in Chicago. I stick with the BaLe Special and the BBQ pork. I enjoy their variety of desserts and their rice and shredded pork packed to go. Their new location is also very modern and hip. Great improvement. read more

Go for the bread, come back for the bread. Crunchy - but not hard - on the outside and soft and warm on the inside. It's stuffed with delicious, fresh ingredients, like cilantro, turkey, cheese and jalapenos (plus what feels like 20 more bits and pieces). The bahn mi that Ba Le puts out is worth every cent (and it's not that many cents to get one, which is an additional bonus!!) So, yeah.... go for the bread, come back for the bread. read more

My review is solely based on Ba Le's food itself as someone picked up my sandwich for me so I can't comment on the service. I have to admit I was a bit concerned when I was told where we were getting lunch as I've never had Vietnamese food before, however I was told it was really good so I was game and gave it a chance. I enjoyed my sandwich very much. It was light and tasty. Usually I don't like my sandwiches loaded with lots of veggies, but I kept them on this time and they added a nice flavor. I did, however, take off the jalapenos as I'm not a big fan of spicy. I'd definitely go back to Ba Le if I'm ever in the area. read more

We agreed that the French bread was excellent and crunchy. The decor was also hip and inviting. Unfortunately, the price was just too high for banh mi in an ethnic neighborhood. It's like me going to Westminster (near LA) and paying $5 for a banh mi. Oh wait, it would never cost $5 because a place that charges that much would never survive there. $3 is my max and this place exceeded it. read more

Always order 3 #9's (BBQ pork for me ) and 3 #11's (the traditional I guess?) for John. Best Banh Mi around, bread is delicious. New location now offers more variety of sandwiches as well as to-go Vietnamese Items and desserts. Although price has gone up since they moved one door over from the original location, they still have the buy 5 get one free sandwich special. I get the veggies on the side so they are good to take home! Be careful though because it makes your whole car smell like pork! read more

This is my favorite Banh Mi place in Chicago! It's an establishment in Uptown, and has come a long way since moving to it's current location on Broadway St. Usually I always try something new at one of my regular spots, but here I always get the #1 Saigon-style special combination of pate, ham, headcheese, and pork roll. Never disappoints and always consistent. The baguette is just the best...the perfect combination of crunchy outside and soft, chewy inside bread. I also love the assortment of pastries - especially the mini almond pound cakes. The macarons are okay, available in an array of colors and flavors. Hubby always has to buy a large pork loaf and an order of cubed meat (I don't know the official name for it, but it kinda looks like square meat sashimi). I can't get past the look or texture to really give it a try. Despite the relatively new space, it can sometimes be a little dirty (tables not cleaned or self-bused by customers) and used to have this smell like damp washcloth, but it has since improved. I didn't really notice it during our most recent visit - that says a lot since my sense of smell has become more acute during pregnancy. Next time I will have to try something new - I've been eyeing the Sardine Banh Mi :) read more

Banh Mi heaven. They have an EXTENSIVE selection of Banh Mi sandwiches. Traditionally, these babies are loaded with tons of meat, but Ba Le Bakery has recognized that vegetarians want sammies too! They have a bunch of delicious vegetarian and vegan options. Also, their shrimp spring rolls are SPOT ON. SPOT ON, people. Eat here now. read more

Buy five jalepeno, cilantro, and pickled veggie filled sandwiches and get one free. How could you not? Probably my favorite place to get Bahn Mi. I'm not sure if there's even any competition as far as variety. We usually get a bunch of them to go and them split them a the house. We've tried pretty much all of them. I tend to like the pork and shrimp cake, the special, the chicken, and when I'm feeling stinky, the sardine. The bbq pork, lemon grass pork, chinese bbq pork are pretty good too. I'm not a big fan of the parfait like desserts though. Like I mentioned, six sandwiches for about twenty bucks. If we have people over for lunch or feel like having leftovers for tomorrow, this is the way to go.. read more

Adorable Viet sandwich shoppe. BBQ Pork sandwich was good Pork/Shrimp paste sandwich was ok but started tasting like bologna after a while. Pork egg rolls nothing special. Veg egg rolls seemed to be all starch. Bao was dry and flavor not that interesting after the pork overload. Took home veg sandwich and chicken sandwich. The bread had that "not so fresh" feeling the next day but the contents were still delicious. Amazing value for tasty sandwiches. We got the 6 for 5 and took two home. Even with bottled drinks, egg rolls and a Bao it was a struggle to break $40. This more than fed four of us. Didn't get the bubble tea. I just don't get the appeal of that stuff. The texture reminds me of something I shouldn't mention. Great counter girls. Handled the rush, dispatched orders, communicated clearly to first-timers. Top notch. Super cute build out inside and out. Sorta Gap like I suppose. Liked the Design Within Reach chairs. Really noisy and bustling when we ate there (Thursday dinner) so the counters were a little crumb-strewn. They could have used one extra hand tonight just to keep the dining area clean. The hood is lively and interesting. We blabbed with a few chatty bike riding hipsters when we docked and pushed off, and watched immigrants and CTA / cop / firefighter drama galore through the front windows during the meal. There's way more seating in back as well. I'll fer sure eat here again but I'll stay true to Nhu for lunchtime takeout. read more

One my fave's in Chicago. Number 1 reason being that it is the cheapest eats you can find in the area. A delicious 6inch sub would cost you around $5 anywhere else. This place it's about $3.50, using fresh ingredients. My fav is the Ga sandwich, or Chicken sandwich. The bread they use is also unique in it's crunchiness. Try it out, it's worth a shot. read more

Move over Subway, Quizno's, Jimmy John's, Potbelly's, and all other sandwich shops in town. These sandwiches blow everything else out of the water and they are super cheap. Since there is no banh mi available in my neighborhood, I like to go and get a whole bunch of these at a time and eat them for lunch over the next couple of days. They keep pretty well in the fridge and you just can't beat $2.50/sandwich, especially when they're this good. I think the banh mi here is comparable to the other places in the city that I've tried - can't really say that one is better than any other, but I like the bread used at Ba Le slightly better. It's a little harder and crustier read more

The question that enters my mind immediately is why aren't more of these sandwich, snack and smoothie shops closer to downtown? I love Vietnamese sandwhiches and Ba Le does an excellent job. I agree with my predecessor reviewers, this place is "IT." Words of caution for some: - Beware, there are fresh slices of jalepeno in the sandwiches. If you can't hang, then ask for it without. - Since this place is da shizzle, the wait may be 10 minutes long even for 1 sandwich. (this could feel like a long time since the place lacks ambience and not spacious.) - Don't come here for a friendly smile with your sandwich or boba tea. They just trying to get the job done right and fast. read more

I remember when vietnamese sandwiches used to be buy five, get one free for only $10. But alas, times have changed, inflation has gone up and sandwiches for 3 bucks a pop is still an awesome deal! Ba Le has yummy vietnamese sandwiches for both newbies and hardcore fans. Turkey, shredded chicken and roast beef are some of the more familiar items. But if you are feeling adventurous, go for the special (headcheese, jamon, pork roll and pate)! It's absolutely delicious - just don't think about what you're actually eating (meat from a pig's head, sour ham and meat paste). Lol, hopefully this hasn't scared you off yet but I mean, when are you ever going to find those ingredients in something that tastes so damn good! Made on toasted baguettes and topped with onions, cilantrol, jalepeno peppers and pickled carrots and daikon - they are just plain awesome! Love the crispy toastiness of the bread and how the pickled carrots and daikon are not too sweet, not too vinegary. My two favorites are the veggie tofu and the roast pork. They also have great little vietnamese snacks and prepackaged lunch plates for pretty decent prices. The new location just opened up and looks super clean and modern. And they actually have seating now! Tip: If you buy a couple of sandwiches to last the week, throw them in the toaster oven for a few minutes before you eat. Somehow, they taste even better than when you first get them! read more

Foodwise, Ba le's banh mi and flaky pastries are the ish. Everything else is hit or miss, with the fresh spring rolls being a def hit, the mango buns a def miss. So why 5 stars? Have you seen the prices??? I mean $3.25 for anything is suspect, even the pillars of the industrialized food industry can't compete with these prices. Nor can they offer 25% of the taste, or 1/1,000,000 of the nutritional content. Why? Ba Le has fresh ingredients, on freshly baked breads, served plus vit in a modern and cool environment. I honestly wish more of Chicago looked like this, with cool spare detailing and clean open spaces. Might make Chicago look more like Berlin, but that's one city worth emulating. Back to Ba Le, sorry. Its just such an amazing blend of cheap/fast/tasty and diverse that I can't help but gush over this place. read more

While I do agree with other reviews that the quality of the sandwich seems to have gone down since the new digs...the Banh Mi is still excellent. I am half Filipino, and sorry to be a traitor to my Flip roots, but VIETNAMESE food rocks. Vietnamese food slays all other asian food, including Filipino food. Sorry mom, but it's true. (filipino food will still be my #2, though, ok?) I was introduced to the Banh Mi when I dated a Vietnamese guy from 96- 99. I remember him taking me to eat my first banh mi sandwich. Oh my god....I went from being in love with my then boyfriend to being in love with a sandwich. My relationship with Minh may have fizzled, but my love for the Banh Mi is still as strong as ever. Banh mi's are the best sandwiches in the world. I can still taste the crunchy bread and the crisp vegetables complementing the meat, the surprise of the pate, the ....argh!!!!! I am making myself hungry right now.!!!! I wish i could get a Banh Mi in Hyde Park. A Banh mi place would kill the competition here, not just the Subway and Potbelly's but the thai and chinese places... The prices here are so cheap..definately college student budget prices! Ba le, how about opening an outpost here on the southside? read more

As with most of my reviews, I like this place because it's close to the train. Literally a block from the Red Line. I always get the beef one. Beware the Bale special. If you don't like liver, don't get it. They smear in the pate which isn't like fancy French pate where the liver-y taste is tempered by truffles or misc spices. I have a feeling it is straight up LIVER. I guess you could order it sans pate... The beef sandwich comes with cilantro, pickled daikon radish, lots of jalapenos, and bulgogi-tasting beef. Still tastes good the next day, although make sure t0 moisten the top with a little water before microwaving to soften the bread. Their "deli" foods make a decent lunch. I've had the shrimp rolls (mint, vermicilli, cilantro, deveined cooked shrimp) and the shrimp rice cake thing (rice cakes, dried shrimp, fish sauce, peanuts). Rice cake thing is not for the faint of heart. It smells and folks will glare at you in the break room. so another yelper pointed out that it is PORK not beef. my bad! also i've uploaded a photo of the sandwich. read more

Ba Le Sandwich - BBQ Pork, way cheaper than Subway ($3.50) - Bakeries Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

So I had Ba Le for the first time today. I had a sandwich craving over the past weeks so have scarfed down jason's deli, potbellies, jimmy johns numerous times... Anyways I liked it, with caveats... Its a bit of a drive for me but parking wasn't an issue at lunchtime. The #1 Roasted pork was tasty, but seriously I wanted like quadruple the amount of toppings/meat that was on there. Reason being was: 1) the baguettes are so dang crunchy and hearty... in a good way... but overwhelming in proportion to the filling 2) The jalepenos are in equal ratio to the meat so you get maybe 2oz pork belly and 2oz jalepenos = A spicy french bread sandwich, not exactly a roasted pork sandwich... Granted, they are cheap about 3 bucks each so well worth it in the end. The desserts were various cocconut milk, lychee, mung bean, jellies concoctions... think halo-halo without the ice Filipino people - And of course really delicious! Oh, and I uhh... I bought a "fried pork roll" mostly because well.. it was big and warm when I touched it. I paid 5 bucks and thought, hmm that's funny, it costs more than my sandwich, then saved it for a "little" snack later on. I bit into it later and realized..... it's a giant processed pork sausage! I think its what they cut and put on their sandwiches. ::shrugs:: Anyway, I'll just be making my own perfectly proportioned sandwiches the next few days i guess. vs. nhu lan next read more

I love Bale. It's a fantastic place to get a sandwich. I have tried the Veggie Avocado sandwich, which has TONS of vegetables and its very filling. The bread is fresh, crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. You can buy 3 mini loaves for a dollar as well to take home. The roast beef sandwich is hearty including mayo and veggies to go along with it. The sandwiches are always nice and warm when they are all ready to go and for $3-4 per sandwich, its a great lunch place. If you buy 5 sandwiches, you get one free as well, if you are going there with a group. I will go back. I think I would like to try everything on the menu. read more

For starters, let me just say, if I hear one more time about some Californian having had this or that back home and it was "soooo much better", I'm going to scream. We aren't in Cali, get over it! Not to mention, I have had bad food on the coasts, in the midwest, in other countries.... there is good and bad food everywhere! Come on! Anyway, onto the review! I am seriously obsessed with this place. I have gone in so much lately that it's starting to get embarrassing and I really need to slow it down... I had gone in here a couple times a while back, but never tried the sandwiches, just some of the prepackaged foods, which I admit are nothing special. But recently I had my first sandwich, and D@MN they are GOOD. They really do put most American sandwiches to shame. They come on a crunchy, yet soft, fresh french style roll, and are cheap, WAY cheap, for their size and deliciousness. Were talking 3 to 4 bucks a pop. So far I have had the Veggie Avocado, the Lemongrass Marinated Pork, and the Chicken... they were all so good, with the chicken being my least fav only because the chicken itself has no sauce on it. They also were all so different, which I enjoyed. I never thought I would like a sandwich with these combinations of flavors (ie pickled jalapenos and vinegars), but trust me, they are amazing. I can't wait to try different ones.... lemongrass pork sausage is next on my list. Also, the pork egg rolls are to die for. It is more a Vietnemese style spring roll, than what you might think of from a typical Chinese restaurant, which can be some nasty pre-frozen thing. My only gripe? I wish they were open later (they close at 8 daily), but this is not worthy of a star deduction... Totally love this place and am excited for them to move into their bigger, retro-futuristic location! read more
