Absolutely horrible experience at Babe's last Saturday - and not a single employee could care. I was there with my family - eight of us in total with three children. Waitress eye rolled her way through the service whenever any of us asked for anything. I ordered a bacon cheese burger and fries and out came a blue cheese burger and a half-full fry container. Ok - whatever. BUT THEN it got a lot worse. Waitress disappeared and we couldn't get any drinks or order more food. Dirty plates were never cleared because the waitress disappeared. My wife goes to the restroom and she sees the waitress walk in. The waitress says in disgust to my wife - how dirty the women's bathroom always is. That's a nice vote of confidence. We had to go find a manger to get the check. Manager asks how our meal was and I tell him everything that was wrong - and his response was "Thanks for the feedback". Is that a joke? When in Utica where do you go? Well Babe's sports bar was conveniently located across the street from my hotel. So Babe's it is. I was hungry after a day filled of travel delays. My husband and I decided to come here for wings and drinks. It was strange because there is no drink menu. We both started off with a double titos and moved on from there. We later learned they had beer on draft to include Yuengling. A northern favorite. Since beer is not my friend anymore I got a angry orchard cider. I was probably the only person who has ordered that in years here. Damn hippies! For our meal we decided on two orders of wings. There was between 8-10 wings per order. We got the BBQ and also the original buffalo wings. I would skip the BBQ next time and get buffalo. They tossed in a few pieces of carrots and celery for good measure. We've been to Babes before and I've never had any issue, but as with many places, their service is getting worse and worse. My wife were traveling back from being out of town and ordered 2 meals for take out - shrimp riggies and a chicken sandwich. When my wife ordered - she specifically asked "will is he ready with 35 mins?" The clear answer was yes. Imagine our shock when it wasn't ready after nearly 50 mins. Swing and miss. BIG TIME!! It's a standard rule to underpromise and over deliver; not the other way around. This was a horrendous experience to have to wait, and wait, and wait...for an order that was promised to be ready in plenty of time, especially after a 4+ hour drive. First time in Utica on business, and stayed the night. Got in late, and with a quick search I saw this place just across the street. Since it was Thursday night football, and I had a thirst for a couple of beers, I opted for the closest thing walking distance. It would not disappoint. Number one, the cost of living here is much less, and they stayed true to it with their famous local beer Saranac. Like in Germany, I try to drink the local brewed beer, if they have one. Bartender asked if I wanted regular or tall. I figured start with regular, which was 10 ounces. Well, the beer was great, but it went fast, so I asked for tall, and she brought out a 22 ounce one. Oh, Yeah. Then checked my tab... $5.50! Hey, already couple of stars earned! Service was really great. Wasn't too hungry, but really wanted to try something original here. Did not try the riggies, but will when I come back, since spicy pasta is my favorite, and I hear famous here. Instead, I tried the buffalo calamari, and it was pretty darn good. After speaking to locals next day, they said this place was OK, but only because there are better and more expensive places up the road. Maybe so, but the bar was great, where I think they do a lot of business, service was fantastic, and the food was good. So, the 4 stars. Can't wait to go back, hungry next time. read more

I saw this place driving by on a work hotel stay so I ordered BBQ chicken pizza to my room. The pizza itself was $31ish and that ended up being for a 14" pie (personal) which was mediocre at best. So I hate to give bad reviews but avoid this one unless you're looking for commercial grade product. I also think the chicken was a pork mix due to its color. We got together with good friends on a Sunday afternoon at Babe's for lunch. Having been there before we were not concerned with service and quality. We should have been. One good point: the waitress was friendly. The bad: 1. Being the first employee a customer meets, the hostess should be welcoming and attentive to request. We described the people we were to meet. How can you miss a 6'5" black man? We also felt put out when she led us to a table. Our friends were seated at another across the room yet arrived not long after us. 2. One soup came 10 minutes before any of the rest of the food. Two salads were served with the rest of the food and the other soup seemed to have been forgotten then served with the meal. I was at a loss as to which one I'd rather eat cold. 3. Cauliflower cooled down quickly. It wasn't very hot to begin with. And it resembled a frozen variety. The chickorini soup was lukewarm but flavor would have been good if it was hotter. 4. The chicken and greens wrap was soso. We asked two people for ketchup before receiving it. 5. Service was slow and haphazard. Plan on waiting for your food and then eating it cold. 6. There was something sticky on the front of the seat. Went here with family for a casual dinner out. They have a nice enclosed yard like area outside that is pet friendly and has yard games to play. Came here for family dinner. We were seated promptly and our server was wonderful. My daughter got chicken tenders and fries. They were real tenders!! Like, normally restaurants just use frozen fingers, but they actually breaded the chicken themselves. They were so tasty and my daughter loved them. We started with the cheese fries. While they could have used more cheese and bacon on them, they were crispy and delicious. I got the swiss and bacon burger. It was a little more cooked than I ordered it, but it was well-seasoned and tasty. The use of peppered bacon really kicked the whole thing up a notch. Really enjoyed this restaurant and if I ever end up back out this way, this is a for sure spot for me! read more

My father, two sons and I stayed in the hotel across the street for two nights on a trip to Cooperstown, NY and ended up eating here both nights. The outdoor seating area was wonderful as were the many outdoor games available. The food was good too. The boys devoured their pizzas, my dad enjoyed the Wedding Soup and salad and the fish fry I had was very good. The beer selection was nice as well. If you're like me, and find yourself in Utica on a Sunday, your options will be fairly limited. So many of the famous (or at least beloved) institutions are closed Sunday. Babe's is open. So they get a bonus star just for that. Not only were they easily able to accommodate our party of seven, they had plenty of circular tables just for such large parties. Circles are great, because they really help bring people together. Long rectangular tables can be awkward, especially when you have a lot of catching up to do with family, or for keeping an eye on the children to make sure they are behaving. Speaking of kids, Babe's was able to deal with all the special requests of those little angels without batting an eye. It's a great place to bring the family. The kids meals were pretty unremarkable. But the three adults were here to experience the foods of Utica. We're not from these parts. So we got the Utica greens, chicken riggies, and hats with sauce. I can't say I'm an expert on any of these dishes. It was only my second experience with Utica greens, and my first in the city of their birth. But everything was tasty, and the bold flavors of the dishes really instilled a hunger to try these Utica classics in as many places as I can find them. Not only that, but now I want to start cooking with hot cherry peppers at home. Those things are fantastic. Utica, you really know how to season a plate of food. Bravo. Me and my boyfriend went for our anniversary dinner and it was really mediocre which left a sour taste in my mouth. The only thing was enjoyable were the apple cider slushies and they have little donuts on them as garnish which is adorable. But they advertise on the menu drinks are BOGO on fridays and apparently this ends at 7- which the menu does not state. We both got riggies, calamari and greens. The calamari was rubbery and you could tell it was definitely frozen. The riggies had a good flavor but my boyfriend ordered his with no mushrooms and was full of mushrooms. The chicken in the riggies is definitely frozen Tyson chicken. Not freshly made chicken breast which baffles me because they have chicken dishes on the menu. Why use over processed frozen chicken. If you find yourself in Utica, which I had t in 25 years, you will think it's but a ghost town of its former self. Saranac Brewery is about the best place in town to enjoy. It was just before noon on Saturday and we were driving West and wanted a quite lunch break. Delmonico's seemed the logical choice but it was closed. Babe's is like a Greek diner, from any upstate NY or tri-state area but this is all Italian. So the selections aren't as big nor as good and slightly pricy for what you get. I had a bacon cheddar burger and the bacon and fries were both extra. The others had Italian fare or Pub fare. The meatballs were decent but the potato skins looked sad like from a freezer pack. The service was good and plenty of televisions though nothing was really going on. Sadly I wouldn't stop again unless I was headed to the brewery. The food wasn't terrible but not great. Stayed at the Marriott across the street and needed to get some food with a work group. "Look! A restaurant across the street!" someone shouted with joy. Oh boy! So dinner for 8 and the ratio of problems was NOT good. Let's start with me. I got the greens as an appetizer and I had to send it back because it was cold. When it came back, it was tasty. My entree, though also delicious, had a problem. I got the shrimp alfredo on a bed of broccoli in lieu of pasta (an up charge mind you for a plate containing 6 shrimp) where the shrimp still had their tails on. Try sticking your hands into piping hot cheese sauce so you can eat. No no! My husband got a TINY portion of shrimp fra diavolo with all the spice and none of the marinara. My mother in laws food came out 10 minutes after we got ours and her honey mustard chicken was tasteless. My nephew's buffalo pizza was hardly cut. My brother in laws chicken riggies was very bland and cold for a classic dish and all the pepper stems were left on. My sister in law (buffalo fried shrimp), my son (chicken bacon wrap) and my niece (grilled cheese) had yummy dishes so two stars it is. I want to point out that our waitress was AMAZING. She apologized for everything and didn't miss a step along the way and waiting on 8 people's needs is never easy. Update: I spoke to the manager and she took a bit off our bill. I will start this as I always do by saying that I don't give out five stars unless I am really blown away. I have been to Babe's for lunch 4-5 times. It's an okay place to eat. It feels very much like a chain restaurant. I don't love or hate anything about it. It's just okay. The decor feel like Applebee's or TGIFridays. The staff is always nice and they take care of you as they should. Food is pretty much what you would expect. American fare nothing fancy. I have had sandwiches and salads none of them blew me away but I could just be ordering the wrong thing. This time I had chicken wings and a chicken Cesar salad. The wings were supposed to be medium but they were more like mild. They were big meaty wings and tasted fine. The salad was good but nothing I would get often.this review may be unfair because I haven't really tried a lot from this location and have only been for lunch but for me it ranks as a run of the mill chain restaurant would. But we should have chose the Applebee's down the street. Took a good 20 mins before we saw any food action, even a bread basket which we had to say 'yes' to. The app sampler is a joke yo. Spare yourself the change bc what the actual hell. It's straight up frozen app stuff put on a plate and it was pathetic for the price. We were starving tho after unpacking a college dorm room and just shut up and ate it. The entrees we were holding out hope for. Well... It was another titanic situation. My fried shrimp was hella gross in thick ass batter that my thick ass did NOT need. The haddock dinner was ok but why is there fish skin still left on here? Kinda grossed out my mom. The chili was a step above hormel canned so you can take a wild guess at that ish. The buffalo shrimp Alfredo was so effing thick and greasy that it was affected the colons in my party almost immediately. Hope you stocked up on pampers before ordering that. All in all: waitress was super sweet and attentive, food is WACK (or at least the items we ordered were) and I didn't find the joint to be that clean either.
