WHAT! So the older man behind the counter showed me "burnt ends?" I said, YES:) OMG!! So then I order side of ribs for $10. They gave me these little meatless ribs already cut up on a little plate! I looked at theses 5 rib bones, & said no thank you! I'll have sliced brisket instead, please! So I got 5 slices for the same price!! They said it weighted the same!! I love meat. I watch Pitmasters--I know my way around BBQ. I was a little concerned when I went in and asked for burnt ends and they looked at me and said "WHAT?" So I told them it's the ends of the brisket that got a little charred. So they slapped them on my plate and we were in business. I bellied up to the sides and got some hot beans and potato salad. They had all ready run out of corn'o'brien and green tomato relish. But it was late in the evening. The burnt ends were divine, but the sausage was just eh. I used the sauce on the sausage. BBQ Crawl Stop #2 Back country is set up like most other BBQ places, where you order and they chop the meat up and serve it to you on a tray. Brisket - The brisket was dry and lacked flavor and didn't have much semblance of a smoke ring. Ribs - The ribs are the best thing on the menu. Cooked to perfection, not tough or overdone to where the outside is dry. The sweet rub added to the flavor yet wasn't too strong to overtake the good flavor of the meat. Sausage - Nothing special, like the run of the mill sausage at most BBQ restaurants you might get (a la Eckrich Farm). Sauce - The sauce was light brown in color and was very sweet, no tanginess whatsoever. Conclusion - Overall a solid joint. I would like to go back to see if their brisket is any better the second time around. But you cannot lose on ordering a plate full of ribs. Once is a mistake, twice is a pattern. I just returned from the restaurant even though I used one of their delivery services to order dinner tonight. Of the four items we ordered, one was missing and one was wrong. The bag had the safety seal, so apparently it was the restaurant's fault. They were very apologetic when I called but ultimately I drove over to get the missing item, despite paying $15 for delivery fee and tips. And like I wrote above, if this hadn't been the second time I'd had a problem, I'd probably have left it alone. The first time I placed an order with them, it was a phone in pickup. I did count the items after picking them up but when I got home, my dessert was wrong. I called and they said they were out of the dessert I'd ordered, so they replaced it with one they "thought" I'd like. I couldn't understand why they wouldn't just call me back and ask what I'd like instead! (I didn't like what they gave me instead so it was a total waste of money). So that's two orders where I've lost money and had my time wasted, so I will look elsewhere for BBQ. Luckily good barbecue isn't hard to find in Dallas! read more

This is my stop on the days when I have been out busy with errands and cannot fathom the thought of going home and cooking. They have one of the best baked potatoes with chopped BBQ brisket that I have eaten. Their counter service is great, friendly and just a short wait. Doesn't hurt that it is less than half a mile from home so my food is still hot even after dragging all my groceries and other purchases into my apartment. Went here with the family, the place seemed nice, but the food was not... We'll start with the meat. It was bland, cold, and not trimmed well at all. There was almost no actual meat on it, just fat and bones. The sides were also cold and tasted like they had been sitting​ out for a while, even tho it was only about 5:30 in the afternoon. Everything had tons of salt on it but very little flavor. The BBQ sauce itself was runny and tasteless. The only good part of the meal was the soda, which is REALLY sad for a BBQ joint in Texas... This used to be a great place for great quality BBQ for many years. The ownership changed and unfortunately, the food just doesn't seem as good as I remember. The brisket is well smoked and that flavor rings true, but all else seems to be of a lower quality, especially the ribs. I will still come here for the brisket and potato, but I'll pass on the beans and coleslaw on the next visit. The price is still up there and the service is better under the new ownership as they do aim to please. The sides were good but potato salad was a lil salty too. 17.32 w/ tax. I think they upcharge for ribs. I'd return for sure. Oh customer service was good. They used to have pickle spears and other self serve continents but since people were coming in and taking a load of stuff, they got rid of it. Those pickles spears were the bomb. All I can say is omg. My husband and I were feeling like a cheat meal today and with covid-19 around we knew we wanted to support local restaurants. We were craving some bbq and I came across Back Country BBQ on Uber Eats. I typically don't get the pork or brisket because I feel like it's always dry where ever I go. The Beef ribs were rubbery leather dog toys. The Pork ribs were grey centered and salty and fell off instead of holding a bite. Sauce was runny, sides lacked flavor. It's a Tuesday....but we won't be back any other day of the week to try anything else, ever. You'd HAVE to be in the "Back Country" without any other options for dinner, to want to come back to this place. Ribs are greasy and tough. Beans are canned. Cobbler and rolls are definitely not home-made as the waitress, Debra, who has a major attitude issue, said they are. She did not wear gloves to serve my food during a worldwide pandemic. French fries, which Debra recommended as "We peel the potatoes every day" are so bad I threw them out. They LOOK and taste like they've been sitting in grease for hours if not overnight. They are a blob, not individual fries. They are inedible. Everything is overpriced. I intentionally bought enough food ($50+) for a few days of the pandemic isolation & so looked forward to it. I grew up going to this place, i can remember as a kid noshing it up at the old location. And guess what, that same dude is starring me in the face to this day, asking me what kind of delicious animal i would like to feast on. It is an assembly line format, pick your meat, then slide down to the sides, drinks and desserts. All of the sandwiches are great, with buttery buns. The brisket is a great sandwich, and is awesome as just a meal. The ribs are the type of ribs that will make you look at a pig wollering in mud, and your mouth starts watering, cause you know by the time he hits your plate at Back Country, he's gonna be all delished up. The cream spinach is the best i've had in Dallas. And the condiment bar is pretty standard, with the excpetion of one thing....their pickles are some how the greatest pickles of all time. I don't know how to explain it, they don't look like much, but they taste like no pickle this cowboy has ever eaten. Yes, 5 stars. Since I just finished skewering Peggy Sue's "B B Q" and alluded to Back Country as a much better alternative, here's what I think. Back Country is run by Lake Highlands-area folks and they and the other employees have always been genuine and nice on my visits. Not pretending to be anything they're not, this is a low-key, welcoming spot that greets you with the serving line upon entering. Friendly fellows attend to your requests behind the counter. Great potato salad (the yellow kind), macaroni & cheese if I remember correctly. I can't NOT get the smoked sausage here. It's awesome! Brisket is perfect--juicy, sloppy, not too fatty but with enough to add dimension to its flavor. My friend always gets smoked turkey here--I don't know why you'd waste your time with turkey at a barbecue place (yankee?), but he loves it. Ribs are money (to revisit the 90s terminology). Forgive me for not going into microscopic detail on why they're good--they're just really good. This is a place that has regulars. Oh! The sauce! Roommate and I were being lazy so we went out again; this happens to us quite often. I don't even know why we go grocery shopping anymore. Tonight our lucky winner was Back Country BBQ. The first time I try out a BBQ joint I usually get the 3 meat dinner and so for my meats I had the hot links, brisket, and ham. The hot links tasted good, but there was nothing hot about them. Trying to improvise for the spicy cravings I was eating whole jalapenos with it. Pickled jalapenos, muaaahhh. The beef brisket was fair, it was pretty lean and the tenderness was just average for me. That's me saying I have had better brisket. The ham tasted ok, but the bbq sauce that I drizzled over my meats may have affected the actual taste of the ham. I think the ham could have tasted better without my reckless painting it with their sauce. The heated bbq sauce was ok. Nothing too special about it. The buttered toast was quite buttery and nice. As for sides, I had the bbq beans and macaroni salad. The beans tasted like Van Camp's Pork and Beans with some additional spices. The macaroni salad was disappointing. I have to say in my whole life of having macaroni salad, this was by far the blandest macaroni salad ever! I think all I tasted was the macaroni. You could have added some more pepper or even more mayo and it would have been better. I should have avoided it when I noticed that I was the first to dig into it this evening. Only good if you love tough meat. Those were the toughest ribs I have ever eaten. Sad actually because they were so meaty. My boyfriend is in our kitchen now, cooking them till they're tender. We also got 3 sides, BBQ beans were good. Potato salad looked like riced cauliflower and the Italian grean beans that I normally like so much when I prepare, had NO flavor. We also got 1/2 a pint of peach cobbler. THAT was even bad. It was mushy with maybe 2 tiny slivers of peach. The potato salad and peach cobbler, I couldn't tell what they were at first, I had to take tiny tastes of them. This is my first time ever writing a review, I just felt so irritated and gypped, I work from home right now and have really been blessed....but I HATE wasting money and I feel like we just threw $50 in the trash. Very friendly staff but the BBQ was average. Ordered the two meat plate at 1:30 pm, which I think ended up meaning I ate what was left over for the 11:30 am - 12:30 pm lunch rush. The ribs were fall off the bone tender but I think I would rather have the more tactile experience of chewing on ribs that were cooked with smoke through the whole process; I would wager that these were either slow-cooked or baked before being finished with a little smoke. The brisket was lean, non-smoking and non-flavorful. 'nuff said. The onion rings were not freshly made and, as a result were greasy without any crunch. My first time in and the wonderful smokey smell hit me as soon as I walked through the door. I got a little confused on where to order. The owner helped me and I ordered beef ribs with beans and creamed corn. Baked beans were just ok. The creamed corn is the best I have ever had. The corn still had a great crunch. The beef ribs were very good. Great smokey taste and meaty. I tried a little of the BBQ sauce they offered but only lightly. I also grabbed some of the pickles and onions from the bar as they always compliment beef BBQ. Next time I will try a few other items. I just ate dinner at Back Country and thoroughly enjoyed everything. I had the brisket dinner with baked beans and mashed potatoes. I also got an extra side order, creamed corn, which was my favorite. I met the owner, he said that it was his mother's recipe. As far as the reviews I realize everyone has their own taste, but I was very pleased with everything, did not think that the sauce or beans tasted like ketchup as mentioned in another review. They are baked beans, unlike the ranch beans served at some BBQ restaurants. I also noticed that the parking lot is in very good shape and front entry should not be a challenge for anyone as mentioned in another review. It has been repaired and the step is clearly identified. The place was bigger than I expected, I was going to take pics, but I was short for time.. due to traffic. Tried a double meat dinner. Sausage and hot links for the meat, potato salad and spinach casserole for sides, and... toast. I could see that they at least put some chili seeds or something into the sausage mix, and some chili flakes in the hotlinks, which is always nice to see. They tasted alright, but definately not worth payin 12$ for... not with that sauce their giving. The sauce was way too watery for me, sort of a lukewarmish runny soup like consistency, and not like a thick and hearty blend like i'd like. It was as if they had begun with a good thick sauce, but then kept watering it down (tasted like watered down ketchupish lite bbq sauce). The sides were ok, the potato salad was pretty good and looked sorta unique (yellow style but like they dice their ingredients up a lil smaller to give it a better consistancy IMO), the spinach casserole was less than average to maybe average on my personal likeablility scale.
