This was a super fun experience for my son and I! First timers and I will definitely go back! Fun bonding time and teamwork!!

It's hard to fathom, but almost a decade has passed since we paid to stand in line for any experience, much less a pirate one! We love how escape rooms now accommodate duos, and especially appreciate that rooms are now private, and we are able to be silly and competitive and immature with the people who matter. I mean, imagine being stuck on a schooner or deserted island with people you don't know - it would be a streaming series! Oh, wait ... Well, Back in Time is one of our favourite companies when it comes to escape rooms that are immersive and faithful to theme and story, but we're a little embarrassed to say that we were excited to try Blackbeard's Treasure because of a streamed show, excellent, though it be. Yes, we could have chosen to do this particular escape room because of the book(s), the movie, the theme park or the dinner adventure, but, no, it was Black Sails, just taken off that streaming service, that piqued our interest! The mall where we usually play Back in Time is under renovation, so we played our Friday afternoon game at their temporary space in a small strip mall not far away and just as easy to get to. Parking was good right outside at 3:30pm on Friday, which was their first game of day, and we arrived just about the same time as Harrison, our very enthusiastic game host, who had just escaped (haha) from the same traffic jam as we had. We were shown into the waiting room, and although this was not a permanent location, the lobby looked exactly as it did in the mall, and it was nice that the clean no-frills restroom was located at end of hallway inside the business instead of outside in the mall. Our entry into the game was heralded by a preview video which complemented what we knew about Blackbeard, especially fresh off Black Sails - but game (unlike TV series) was definitely family-friendly. The room was spacious for our duo, and would fit four in a group comfortably. On the whole, the room was a little dark, but the décor was in theme and music was ambient. Blackbeard's Treasure was a linear game, where most of the puzzles were one & done, even though there were some red herrings (of course, pirates ...). We categorise it as a 3G or third generation room, meaning it comprised a lot of use of magnets, but also a lot of nice old locks. Happily, there were no glitches at all, and everything worked to our success at 52:02. Our very favourite part of the game was being fired on by cannons, and although we wish we could understand the parrot - Captain Flint shore was purty! - we had no least favourite puzzles at all. Harrison was fantastic because she made sure we could read the clues on the in-room timer and clue screen when it was clear the bird was speaking in not an escape roomer's language! Everything made sense, and, once in the room, we didn't miss the mall at all. In fact, we took advantage of the promotion that allowed us to take photos in the room with props, and our gamemaster did a terrific job with both their camera (and thank you for getting the photo to us immediately!) and ours. First time doing an escape room and it was a blast. Im ready for another one. John was super friendly and explained everything thoroughly. We did need some clues to figure things out but he didnt make it so obvious that we still had to think. We did cabin 13 and the clues and riddles were clever and def challenged us. The lights and scary music were a nice touch for the theme. Made it out with 2 min to spare. Not bad for everyone's first escape. read more

We did the "Special Ops: Fate of Agent Smith" one in Manhattan Beach. We came on a Saturday with a family of four, including our teenagers. It was great and just challenging enough. However, we all agreed that they kept adding more time on our clock. I guess their goal is for everyone to have a great experience and get out "in time", but I feel like they shouldn't do that. The staff was very helpful and knowledgeable. For that particular room, they split our group into two rooms where we had to communicate with each other to solve each challenge. But they need some serious attention to the bathrooms in that place! There's two bathrooms and one was "out of order". The only working one was disgusting. Some sort of brown substance smeared on the floor - so use your imagination. And no hand soap. I hope management takes a little time to correct the situation. Because overall, it was a great time and we'd like to return. read more

I tend to like Back in Time escape rooms as they employ some amazing technosorcery. What I found really cool about this place is that they had an intermediate and advanced version of their Blackbeard room; something I've never seen in an escape room before. Luna was quite nice and you could tell she was very passionate about escape rooms; she gave us multiple options on how to play the game. There was just two of us and we barely made it out with less than a minute to spare. I think Luna added time though because it certainly did not look like we were going to win because there were several items that we had not interacted with at all. We learned that those items are part of the advanced version of the room. If you are going to try an escape room, definitely give Back in Time a shot. read more

I've been to the Harbor City location before. For this occasion, this was a team bonding excursion. My boss picked out Blackbeard's Treasure. First of all, I love how immersive and decorated these rooms are. I love the ambience in the Blackbeard's Treasure room with the ocean noises and the lightning making it feel like you're in the main cabin. Without going into too much spoilers, we did the Intermediate level. I thought it was a good one if you've done an escape rooms previously. Our team was able to figure it out with few hints. Our game master was very friendly and was very energetic. Overall, I do recommend this brand of escape rooms in the South Bay. It's great for beginners and it's really easy to set up a booking time too! read more

Loved this!! We did Blackbeard's lost treasure and were able to get out with 3 clues and 6 minutes left! Loved that the staffer could give us clues on the screen to help us out, and gave us directions if we did a clue right but didn't fully put the item in the right place. I loved how varied the puzzles were and how they clearly built on each other and it was clear when you completed a puzzle. We did the intermediate but the advanced one apparently is more logic based with a few more puzzles so definitely would try that out another time! read more

We have done multiple escape rooms and have visited the Del Amo location. This was our first time at this location and it was for my son's birthday. The staff was very friendly and the boys had a great time. The only thing that would have made it better is at the Del Amo location, the staff is at a desk at the front where you can communicate with them AND see the cameras in the room to watch your kids. This location, they are behind closed doors so you have no idea how they are doing or what is happening unless you knock and ask. read more

It's been a few weeks, but I forgot to post this review. I've done many escape rooms with Back In Time, but this was the first time doing this location. We've gone to many Back In Time escape rooms because they are so much fun. We booked the Special Opps rooms because it seemed like a cool theme. Booking online was quick and easy and I was able to send the waiver forms to the other participants no problem. Then came the problems, the game person was rude and the room had somethings that's didn't work. When we got to the location we rang the "Ring" door bell in which no one answered the door. At other escape rooms usually there is someone at a desk inside, but this location looked like it just had a lobby waiting room. The door was locked so we stood outside waiting for someone to answer. We waited a few min and then we rang the ring door bell again. This time the employee came out of another door with a group of people. He motioned to us to try to open the door, he must have unlocked it. The employee looked annoyed and the first thing he says to us was "did you ring the door bell after you saw me coming down the hall way? We were a bit confused by the question since we couldn't see the worker until he came throught the other door. We didn't mind waiting, and he did walk out with other people, but he could have opened the door and said hello, hi or even I'm finishing up with this group so I couldn't answer the door, but no he just looked annoyed and made that weird remark. He then proceeded us to ask us if we've been to an escape room before in which we told him we did. He then said that's good I don't have to explain how this works. He asked us if we had any questions about the room, and we asked how many rooms does this room have so we can know how much time we should spend in each room. He looks at us and says you'll have to see. This wasn't the answer we were looking for, but maybe he was keeping us in suspense. Now came the problems with the room, one of the tasks was to take a tube, stick it in a box and use the camera on the tube to see the letters in the box. The problem was the tube wouldn't go down far enough in order to see the letters. We kept trying different ways, but it was like the tube kept missing the letters and we weren't able to read them. We asked if we were doing it correctly, and our game guide just kept saying are you sure you are pushing it down far enough? Finally he just gave us the letters since the box wasn't working. We escaped the room, but the room itself had a side mission that didn't make sense. Our game guide asked us after if we had any questions or concerns and we mentioned the box, and he sarcastically said well you got out didn't you? Yes, we said, but you told us the letters. We mentioned that we just want to let you know that it didn't work so that the next group wouldn't have the same issue. We failed to complete the side mission in time, but we were still able to get out. We also asked our game guide did we have to do the side mission to escape, in which he gave a fairly vague answer. I wish he clarified what would happened if we completed the side mission was there another room, did we get extra clues? We left disappointed in the room, and confused. It seemed like you had to complete the side mission which helped you get out of the main room, but even if you failed the side mission you still had an opportunity to get out. There was 3 of us, but it did seem like if we had more participants there wouldn't be much for everyone to do. We've been to many Back In Time Escape rooms and the game masters really make it fun. At other locations they've cheered us on or made funny jokes about us in the room, but this time our game master was not very friendly. read more

Back In Time Escape Rooms - The vampire slayer escape room - Escape Games Near Me - Torrance, California

I recommend Blackbeard's Lost Treasure with a group of five or more people. We beat it with about 2 mins to spare and some hints from the computer. The premise is you step back in time to another location, another era, and the last clue is to help you unlock the door to go back to your own time/era. The puzzles were witty and difficult in some instances (if we didn't/couldn't ask for clues, we wouldn't have escaped). I really liked how they decorated the room and I had fun trying to figure out the puzzles. My husband went back and did the Vampire Slayers one and he said the room wasn't very scary, but it was a little creepy. He said he liked that one as well. Masks are required! We didn't wear gloves but we all washed our hands after we escaped. Parking lot is pretty small but we had four cars and all four cars was able to find parking in their lot. read more

Although I didn't experience it myself, the boys emerged victorious from the room and had a great time solving the puzzles. I've done many other escape rooms and this one was one the best ones. We did Vampire Slayer which is the most difficult one. I can't speak to the other ones they offer. Overall: 4/5 - Great escape rooms with this brand! TLDR:  Good escape rooms and a good brand. We did Blackbeard's Lost Treasure and The Vampire Slayers. I would highly suggest either for first-time escape room people (the Gamemasters are very helpful) and intermediate players (specifically Blackbeard's over Vampire Slayers). Breakdown: Production Value: 5/5 Storyline: 4/5 Execution/Gameplay: 3/5 Staff/Gamemaster (GM): 5/5 Credentials: I've done 40+ escape rooms all over the country but concentrated in the Bay Area and Los Angeles area. I've seen everything from the best production value to horrible storylines to escape rooms that had downright broken locks and puzzles. Details: We did two escape rooms on 2 different days (Blackbeard's Lost Treasure and The Vampire Slayers). Blackbeard's was a little bit harder than the Vampire Slayers, but mostly due to some execution items noted below. Great production value across both rooms and the gamemasters we got for both rooms were very attentive and overall very nice! We got out of both rooms, but we definitely felt the challenge for both rooms. Production Value: 5/5 Very good production value. There are no combination padlocks in sight! This is a sign of a great escape room that has taken a lot of care to make sure the experience is completely immersive. All of the locks and puzzles use magnets, hidden locks, etc, so no need to look for 50 million combinations of words and colors and codes. The artwork and decorations were also very much on point, making sure that they were not too distracting from the clues hidden in the room. Storyline: 4/5 Both rooms we played had basic concepts (vampire theme and pirate theme) but the vampire room specifically had a great twist with the storyline that made it very unique. Execution/Gameplay: 3/5 My biggest complaint here is for the audio cues in Blackbeard room. There is a TON of loud background noise that completely muffles the audio clues, the unclicking of locks, etc. There were at least 2 puzzles where we had solved the puzzle but could not hear the puzzle unlock, so we repeated the puzzle 2-3x thinking we did not solve it. Staff/Gamemaster (GM): 5/5 The two GMs we had were AMAZING. Both offered to keep us on track by giving us puzzles if we got stuck -OR- just ask for clues when we agree we are stuck. We also had great conversations with both GMs before and after the rooms talking about our love for escape rooms. Back in Time is clearly hiring those who are invested in the game! read more

We did the Intermediate version of Blackbeard and had a great time. We've done about 7 rooms now from a few different companies but keep coming back to the Back in Time escape rooms as they are by far our favorites. these aren't at all just find keys and unlock things type of rooms and the rooms are VERY interactive. We made it out with less than a minute to spare but definitely had some hints from our very friendly "computer" that helped us when we hit walls. It was good to get out and do something after all these months being cooped up. They have set up a safe and hygienic experience were you have the place to yourselves. Everyone wore masks and they had gloves as well if you wanted them. Do yourself a favor and support this business, it would be terrible if they didn't make it as they are definitely a "Step Up" from most escape rooms. read more

This place is awesome. Great for families with teenagers, or just a group of friends. We've done all of the room and the vampire is the favorite and scariest of the rooms. It was hard on the easy mode. Can't imagine doing the hard mode. My 13 year old son and his friends do escape rooms often. Back in time is their favorite and they have 3 locations in Torrance with something like 8 rooms total. This location has axe throwing next door, same owners and totally awesome. If you're not in the mood for the escape thing, do what we like to do...... book the escape room for the teenagers and book the axe throwing for the adults (where you can byob and hang out). The staff at all of the locations is great. John is awesome and always remembers us. read more
