A scavenger hunt, and an escape room made a baby. Seriously soooo much fun! These gals really know how to show a group a good time! Equally fun and mind bending. Highly recommend!

Wow what an experience. This is a great activity for both local residents as well as tourists. It bring you around the heart of Huntington Beach and allows you to lead about its culture. My friends and I decided to try this out. It is kind of like an escape room except it is all outdoors. When you first get there Nina and Jenna tell you the rules and give you a binder where it has different clues and tools to help you figure out the puzzle. While doing it we walked around different parts of HB and had to find different things that were clues to our puzzle. We saw lots of things that we use to just walk right past. I really had a lot of fun and can't wait till they have even more games.

I arrived thinking it might be a little silly, and ended the day calling friends and colleagues telling them about our amazing day. The puzzles were unique, challenging, fun, thought provoking and well thought out. Plus we got a bit of exercise and got to see downtown HB. Downtown Detectives is great for team building and bonding. It's perfect for companies, families and friends.

We had a really great time doing a father daughter outing with a group. Very well ran, entertaining and a good length of time.

This is our third time using Downtown Detectives. We were fortunate to get to try out their new game in the convenience of our own home. The puzzles were so creative and as you can see it's fun for all ages. Try it out! You won't be disappointed.

    Surya I.

Great activity to do as part of the team building experience, puzzles are moderate to difficult to solve which makes it a fun experience, just plan this on a day with good weather and you are guaranteed to have a blast!

Every time we come to the Escape Game and try a new room, we are blown away by the tech they use. It's not-your-average mom & pop escape room, and for that reason we LOVE it. It operates with a first-come reservation basis, but each room has a max of 8-12 players. This means that you can bring your whole group in, and there's a chance you might have some strangers joining you as well if there's still space. We tend to wait last minute and book the rooms with no reservations yet so we can try to do them on our own. This time, our game keepers Ally and Marcy were so sweet and helpful. This is a nice place for either a rage room or an escape room…read more A few weeks ago, I did a rage room experience here, which was my first time doing a rage room. Marc, the owner, was very nice and kind. He even allowed me to do a special request where I wore an outfit (which is a Morpshuit with t-shirt and shorts) underneath the gear used for the rage room. Very kind of him to accommodate this. I have never done a rage room before, so it was a unique experience. Shattering glass, and breaking things felt very liberating and it helped me release tension/anger. Additionally, at the very end, there was even another surprise where Marc even taught me how to throw ninja stars on the wooden board. It was super cool. At first, I couldn't get any ninja stars to stick, but on one of my final attempts, I actually did get the ninja star to stick, which was awesome!! I was pretty elated that I was able to do that! Anyways, shout out to Marc the owner for being very nice and accommodating. I highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a cool, friendly place to do a rage room or an escape room. I should check out their escape rooms some time soon.

Overall a positive experience with a couple of cons:…read more - When we arrived, there wasn't any clear instructions of where/what we should do as there is no front desk. Also took a while before someone came out to help (I think they were in the back assisting maybe another customer?) but some signage would help. - Waivers could be sent prior to arrival to save on time since it was a google form - staff could be more welcoming and better at explaining. I understand it may be sketchy to go to a customer's car to evaluate items brought from home since it could be a risk to the staff, but I think it could either be instructed earlier before arrival OR simply just state that you cannot leave the business. The delivery of the comment made by the staff was not very smooth (almost felt like implying we were bringing something bad or wrong). - A timer inside the room might be helpful as it's hard to keep track of time once you're destroying things. - Phone "mount" could be better secured with a clasp or something because one bump and our phone fell on the ground where there's shards and scraps everywhere. This could have easily scratched the phone. - Room felt cramped, but understand that may be limited by the size of the store space. - Half of the group was arriving late, in which I shared upfront and thought that the staff would assist in getting them as ready as possible before our first group came out to swap, but when I came out, I saw that they had not even begun to change. I understand the face shield and gloves are limited quantities, but they could have started fitting in the other items like jumpsuit and face coverings. - Also as we were swapping, I ended up giving the second group the instructions when it really should have been the staff to give them the run through. It felt very disorganized during the swapping. For the price, I think it would be nice if each group received at least one larger item and not just cups, plates, and glass. All-in-all, it was fun to let out some rage by wrecking things and not having to clean it up. My friends and I did enjoy this different experience. Also fun to watch them from the room cam inside the Axe Room as they rage.

Let me preface this review by mentioning I've not done an Escape Room before, so it's hard for me…read moreto rate them, especially the same way I rate restaurants, coffee shops, or even parks for that matter, IYKYK. However, after doing my very first escape room at Cinema Escape Rooms, I'm definitely willing to make a return visit, not just to this one, but any escape room really. Cinema Escape Rooms is located in a town square in Los Alamitos on the south side of Katella between Noel and Lexington. It may be easy to miss because it's on the second level of a two-story building, and you almost certainly won't see the first word, especially if you're driving by. Look for the words "Escape Room" on the second level by a stairwell next to 7 Eleven, and that's where Cinema Escape Rooms is. First and foremost, don't go there without having made an appointment first; the appointments help the gamemasters plan ahead by cleaning and preparing the rooms before the start of each game. They have four rooms available: Ark of the Covenant, A Strange Thing, Home All Alone, and Office Escape. Each of the four rooms can accommodate a different number of people, from 7 to 15, and the pricing will vary, even per person, depending on how many are in a group. The cheapest rate is $35 per person, and you'd need at least 4 other teammates to attain that rate. Given everything mentioned in this paragraph, it can be understandable how planning a team outing can be a little challenging here, especially with the possibility of last-minute no shows or others who want in last minute. Here's an example: I was hoping to do Home All Alone because I was most familiar with the Home Alone movie. However, I was asked to switch to A Strange Thing, which I'm not familiar with, but could accommodate two more people if we had any last-minute additions. I thought the more familiar you are with the movie, the more likely you'll escape the room before your hour is up, but that's not necessarily the case here, though I could argue you might not be as actively engaged with your team. I switched anyways. We had a dozen in our party, and to ensure that everybody would pay the same rate, we had to divide our party so that no one group was at least twice the size of the other. However, one person in my group ended up kind of late, which almost caused one of us to have to switch over. She did arrive just a few minutes later, which gave ample time for one of the gamemasters to give a brief orientation to the group doing Office Escape while we were waiting for our last team member to arrive, so I got to listen to this orientation twice. The two most important things in my opinion are one, there are biohazard signs on items that are not intended to be clues for the game. Secondly, nothing needs to be pulled/pushed/opened/closed/etc. with excessive force, kind of like trying to fit a puzzle piece that isn't shaped to fit. I was a little surprised, though pleasantly of course, that we were allowed unlimited hints without a time penalty. However, we wanted to progress as far through as possible with minimal help. The gamemaster would keep an eye on us via camera in the room, and they'd give us hints depending on our progress. Also, each clue is only used once, so keep track of which ones have been used and which ones haven't! Of course, I'd rather not spoil the details, but I kept misinterpreting the clues as red herrings for the most part. Except for one where we were stuck for a good 5-10 minutes close to the end, and the gamemaster, Mike, was impressed enough with something I said that he used my quotation as a hint for us to find that missing piece to the puzzle. Really appreciated that because I was apparently onto something that the rest of my team didn't catch on to! Of course, there will be times when your teammates will understand something, but you may not. When we were finally done, I wasn't sure it was done until Mike opened the door to let us know we had won. I loved how encouraging he was to our group! There's a waiver you need to fill out first, and the QR code is posted at the front door. I didn't know this ahead of time, and one of my teammates brought up a concern that if you didn't bring your phone, you wouldn't be able to fill out the waiver, which is in the form of a Google Document. I would recommend having a kiosk or two at the front that can be dedicated to waivers. The lighting in the A Strange Thing room was not consistent throughout the game. Some parts had significantly dimmer lighting that it became harder to read the clues. There are also parts where lights are flashing like crazy, which can be startling. I almost thought about giving 4 stars, but decided to keep it at 5 stars because their website did give the fair warnings about the lighting in this game. Overall, I highly recommend Cinema Escape Rooms! BTW, if you're curious, my group of 5 escaped in 52 minutes, and the other group of 7 escaped in 57 minutes. Go my group! lol

They have two rooms that are supposed to be scarier and two that are not scary at all. The zombie was in between. We had one hour to complete the room. The room had a bunch of clues. Some were easier than others. We actually bypassed 3 of the locks because we accidentally got the factory reset. That took a little bit out of the fun for us since we didn't need to find the codes for those locks. We end up finishing with 26 minutes left on the clock. Our game master helped out with clues when we needed it and got stubborn and stuck on a single clue. There was 6 of us and total came out to $42/person. It is not a scary room at all, it is just dimly lit. It has a split start with one person in the room and one outside which is always an interesting way to begin. The décor is great and after having done 30+ rooms, it is always nice when a place has puzzle types that you have never encountered before which was the case here. The room is mostly non-linear and hints are given via walkie talkie. Our game master Christina was great before, during, and after our experience. She gave us a nudge several times when we asked for help and we were able to escape with five minutes left. I commented on the booking that it was our anniversary and she even gave us a choice of a few gifts afterwards, which was very kind and thoughtful. In my opinion, these hunts are way more fun than an escape room because (1) they're longer -- 3-4 hours vs. 1-hour escape rooms -- thus more bang for your buck; (2) they involve walking around beautiful beach cities so you get exercise while enjoying the sun, fresh air, and creation; (3) they allow you to observe and appreciate art, monuments, and plaques you would normally otherwise overlook and walk right past; (4) they're designed so as you're walking between places, you can also chit chat with your teammates; and (5) they provide live competition against all the other teams and therefore fun motivation to work quickly and efficiently. I participated in my first Murder Mystery Scavenger Hunt back in 2015, and I can confidently say that even after running these events for so many years, Alex is still just as passionate, invested, responsive, and funny.
