We stopped here on our way back to Phoenix. The food here was not very good... nothing was seasoned and everything was over cooked. We had the bbq burger, pulled pork sandwich, and boneless wings. On a Sunday afternoon every restaurant we went to was packed. Drove by Backwoods Bar and Grill and didn't see a crowd outside - in fact just a few cars were in the lot. Looked up Yelp and ratings weren't that good so I almost passed on going in but we were hungry so we gave it a chance. So glad we did! The staff was friendly, service was good, we each ordered a burger w fries and they came out to us hot and delicious. Ordered Mexican beer on tap and the beer glasses had Tajin on the rims which was a nice touch. Only drawback, but not unique to just this restaurant, was it was a little pricy - $17.50 per burger. I have been here about four times back to back because the wings were good but the service has been meh but I kept coming back because they do their best and again wings have been good and a burger my husband got was good.... unfortunately tonight I put in a order to be picked up for go and they told me about 20-25 minutes not a big deal by the time a drove there was gonna work out but I got there to a not very busy place and no service really and stood and waited for forever that kinda suck but worst part was getting home to the food being not good my wrap was soggy and lettuce was slimy and my wings this time were not extra crispy like I ordered and yeah it was just not yummy at all and the service and wait was not okay read more

Our waitress, Kaylee, was so sweet and welcoming. The manager also gave us a free desert for being a first time customer which was not expect but so nice. The food was just as great as the staff. This is a decent place if Mackey's isn't open. Food was ok sat on the patio. Lots of bees out there. Service was kind of slow. Chairs are not for big guys. Had to grab a house chair. I will not be back. During the COVID pandemic NOT ONE customer entering the restaurant or milling back-and-forth from the bar to the bathroom, other than myself and my husband, were wearing a mask. Staff was wearing a mask however most had them either under their chin or under their nose. It was very uncomfortable, the place was very crowded. I have been fully vaccinated however my husband has not. And this is not safe. It's too bad that the people of pace and do not see what he's happening down in the valley. The food here was amazing! Hot and fresh! I got the supreme pizza and my boyfriend got the pulled pork sandwich. Oh and we got the honey hot wings and they were crispy and delicious!!! Stopped in to try something new on our way through town heading back to the valley, lots of TV's to watch the basketball game that was on and staff was super friendly, our server Brandon recommended some of his favorite things on the menu and they were all winners. This place would be great if it was run by an experienced person. The owner has no clue to what she's doing. There are a lot of things going on there that are not legal. There are many water leaks in the kitchen area that are dangerous for employees. It has been like that for 8 years. I am surprised the health department hasn't made them address that. The owner also makes her employees pay for their food mistakes. That is illegal. As an employee you are not allowed to sign in for your shift until you get a customer even though you are scheduled to work at a given time. That is not ok. It could be a good place but you can see how badly it is managed. read more

I'm sorry I didn't take a photo of the burger patty to share how bad it was. Frozen patties on both our burgers. Didn't look or taste like quality beef. One was overcooked, both chewy. A hair on my burger, a hair on my fries and even a hair in my beer. My son didn't like his onion rings. Neither my son or wife ate their food after tasting it. My wife was served a root beer instead of the diet coke she ordered. If you're in Payson on a weekday and have to eat I recommend choosing fast food instead. Pleasant, professional, fast service, good food and conversation. Interesting guy with an owner's attitude.
