Cute little local Bird Shop with product knowledge and avian knowledge. Finches, Chickadee, Hummingbirds, Thrush, Morning Dove, American Robin, Song Sparrow and the American Goldfinch, all blessed us this year. We tried to keep up with their big appetites and with the help of BBS we were able to do that. They sell great sourced Bird food and pre-package it for you. When I had questions, they were more than happy to answer them. They also have all kinds of fun local Artist chimes and bird houses and what not. Thank you BBS. I usually get my birdseed here but had trouble with my Squirrel Buster feeder and took it in for help. Matt should have run the other direction when I dragged that thing in. Although they are not a repair shop, Matt worked on this frustrating puzzle of a nightmare for over a half an hour. IT was a slow morning so thankfully not a lot of people at the counter. I had already put probably 40 minutes struggling with this part that they don't make anymore and I had had it! Thanks to Matt, he got it all working and he was still pleasant by the end. Oh my God this one birdbath was so gorgeous. As someone who loves birds, I've wanted to go to Backyard Bird Shop ever since I heard them mentioned in All Classical Portland. I have wanted to set up a bird feeder outside my apartment and the staff at this store helped me find the right product. The store has a customer limit and there is a sign on the door that says whether you can go in or not. My husband and I were able to go in right away. Hand sanitizer was located right by the entrance. We were promptly greeted by a staff member who explained where all the types of bird feeders were located in the store. I thought I wanted a tube feeder, but I learned that it probably wouldn't work for my apartment. Luckily, another employee suggested a window feeder which uses suction cups to stick to your window. I was also given instructions on how to set it up. One nice surprise was all the gift items in the store. The store had the items I expected like bird feeders, bird seed and birding guides (including one with pictures from the game Wing Span. There were also cute bird mugs, tiny garden sculptures made of silverware and locally made candles. I really enjoyed shopping at this store and would go back. The employees' level of expertise and customer service made me glad I didn't just order something from Amazon because I probably would have bought the wrong thing. read more

Great selection & quality products. We were the only customers in the shop with two employee working & neither of them once even acknowledge us. They both were too busy sorting & stocking post cards. We managed to find what we needed on our own. They had all their post cards all laid out all over the registers and still did not acknowledge my husband who was standing there waiting to checkout. He had to speak up twice to get their attention. Must have been some pretty important post cards. I would expect that a specialized shop like this with high end merchandise would put more empathies on customer service & make more of an effort to acknowledge their guests. read more

This is my go-to supplier for bird seed and equipment. When my Squirrel Buster feeder came apart recently I brought it in to see if they would help get it back in working order. Matt went above and beyond, finding some replacement parts and doing some on the spot repairs, while also steering me towards getting in touch with the manufacturer for additional parts not available at the shop. I've relied on backyard birds store for years, and I've always come away more informed and happy with my purchases. Now that I no longer have a yard, I still find this store a great resource as I coax hummingbirds to my deck feeders. My most recent purchases included a small hand feeder for hummingbirds--it really does attract humming to eat out of my hand!--and a small window mounted feeder that allows us to closely view hummingbirds lapping up nectar. The store is beautiful and inviting with lots of charming purchases to consider. I may no longer have a backyard, but I can certainly find unique gifts and items for my home at this store. read more

I've been buying the 'no-waste' bird seed in the big bags for years. This year they changed the formulation. Less seeds, more unidentifiable stuff. The birds continued to consume it though for most of the summer, although in smaller numbers than usual. But for the last three weeks they have been ignoring it altogether. I hope they will bring back the old formulation. Looks like the birds know the difference. I'm a little PO'd that backyard bird shop would do this as, of course, I am always buying this stuff sight-unseen. read more

Nice People & Great Products We have been shopping here for a while. If you want to attract birds to your home these folks have what you need. Of course it helps to have a layered canopy of trees, shrubs, grasses, flowers, etc and a water source in one's yard, but having this shop help with feeders, seed, suet and advice is sure helpful. Do not buy their bird baths unless you are willing to bring them in over winter! We have often used this store to buy bird seed, so during the summer, we purchased a beautiful ceramic birdbath for our back yard, it was not cheap. This last week, in Jan 2015, we had a couple of cold nights so that the water in the bird bath froze. When it thawed, we discovered that the bath had cracked and was no longer usable. I called the store, and they said "oh yes, none of our bird baths, other than the metal ones are frost proof and should not be left out over winter". There was nothing on the bath I bought letting me know this, or obvious signage in the store with this warning. I am very disappointed with the unconcerned attitude of the person I spoke to, and feel that even a "sorry you did not know" would have gone a long way to help. Updated 02/01/15 I have upped my review to two stars as Yelp removed my original one star review. I still stand by that review. In case you have had the same issues, I was able to go to the Home Depot and buy a can of downpipe sealant spray that has filled all the cracks. It is now back outside and in use again. read more

Although I usually shop at the Vancouver store, I've also been to the Fremont store. The employees are always knowledgeable and willing to help. These stores have so many unique items for sale that I always plan extra time for browsing (and often purchasing). I esp. love the fact that I can get fine sunflower seed bits, which are perfect for the smaller birds. A wonderful store all around. read more

I've recently started shopping here for shell-less sunflower bird seed. My first 5 pound bag brought the birds in abundance and I was so thrilled. The next 5 pound back was so oily, not like the first, and even oil stained the paper bag. When I returned it because the birds wouldn't eat it, they begrudgingly replaced it with the same horrible, oily seed because it's what they're getting from a new vendor. It's crap and I'm not going to give Backyard BS a good review or another cent of my money. read more

The people here are extremely knowledgeable and so, so nice! I've been in quite a bit in the last couple of months and every time I leave I have some new bird gadget (aka a feeder or two, some seed, identification books, etc.) and at least a handful of new facts. Did you know that birds can't taste the heat from chili peppers but squirrels hate it? I now have a hot chili suet cake in my feeder. Take that, squirrels!! read more

They have the best suet cakes that are made right here in Portland. The bushtits and chickadees wouldn't touch the commercial cake but devoured the home made one. Where to begin? I'm new to bird watching and need my first binoculars. Darlene at the shop in West Lynn spent extensive time with me educating me and highly recommending a particular pair because I wear glasses and I don't need top of the line at this point. Unfortunately, they didn't have any of the types she suggested in her store or the store she called. She took my name and number and said she would call me when she found one in one of the stores. I needed them soon for a much-anticipated bird tour at Sauvie hosted by the Fremont store. I bought a pair that she said were new to the store. The next day I get a call from Debbie. She tells me Darlene did research on the binoc's I bought and discovered they were not waterproof and fogged up. She had found one only in all of their locations and it was on hold for me. She had Debbie dig through their paper recycle bin to locate my name and number! Talk about going above and beyond! read more

We complained because the very expensive squirrel feed was 50% dust rather than solid nuts. The store staff was of no help and the corporate office did not even bother to respond to our e-mail complaint. We are just done with them and will now just buy our bird/squirrel products online from other vendors. Yuck! read more
