We decided to share an order of the Buffalo Chicken Tots and the Fried Chicken Sandwich, both very good, however I would've asked for less ranch sauce on the tots as most of the bottom was a bit soggy in the sauce, still good though. Synopsis: The food is great. The drinks are better. The staff is the best. Full review: My wife and I ended up here twice during our romantic weekend getaway. When we rolled into town I wanted to watch the football game before checking into our B&B. The place we are staying recommended 3 places. We went to the one out of the 3 that my wife likes the most. But there was at least an hour wait, the bar was full, and the staff didn't seem very accommodating. To be fair, they appeared overwhelmed, given the lack of finding decent help, it is understandable. Across the street was third place on the recommendations list, Backyard. The parking lot is a little bit off of the main street and seems a little sketchy. Do not let that deter you. There was a wait for a table here too, but we were able to score a couple of seats at the bar. They have a nice, lengthy bar, so it is not difficult to snag a couple of seats. The bar was where it was at. We were wearing our Patriots attire and they put the game on the TV in front of us without us asking. Our bartender/server, Mikaela(sp?), was outstanding. My wife ordered one of the drink specials, a pumpkin spice espresso martini. The amount of care Mikaela used was commendable. Shaking up the drink to make a nice froth and working the microplane to get a generous amount of nutmeg on top of the froth. It wasn't just for our benefit. We saw her make these for a number of other patrons and she used the same amount of vigor and attention to detail. For food we ordered duck wontons, buffalo popcorn chicken, and tots. It all came out fast and fresh. The duck wontons were tasty . Creamy, nice duck flavor. Can't go wrong with tots. Hot, fresh, and delicious. The star of the show was the popcorn chicken. Super fresh, it seemed like they were marinated in buttermilk before being coated and fried. The buffalo sauce and blue cheese was on the side, so you had total control over how much you wanted on each bite. I had several just plain they were so good on their own. They have a great variety of beer on tap, plus a good selection of canned beer/local cider. The specialty cocktails we tried were fantastic. We saw several margaritas going out. Apparently, they make their own sour mix. Mulled cider behind the bar smelled heavenly. Jake, was managing the whole operation. Running around like crazy making sure everyone had what they needed. But not too busy to take time out speak with the customers. For us, the bar where it is at. That is where the action is. All of the servers cater to whatever you need. The other customers are all courteous and friendly at the bar. The experience makes you feel like a local. The staff are all nice, hard working, genuine people. Ranch Camp is one of my favorite restaurants (anywhere, not just Stowe), and I was excited to try out Backyard, which is owned/operated by the same people. Located just behind Ranch Camp, there's ample parking, and access to a mountain bike path. I'm vegetarian, and the choices are more limited at Backyard, as opposed to Ranch Camp (Ranch camp you can add tofu to a salad, And has multiple vegan options; Backyard lacks those options). One of my favorite dishes from Ranch Camp is the nachos, and I was excited to try Backyard's nachos. The serving of nachos is massive - so much so that I didn't even touch my dinner (and my friend only had a bite of hers). The nachos are smothered in a creamy queso, with pickled jalapeños adding a pop of heat. For my main course I ordered the eggplant sandwich (thin fried slices of eggplant, with an aioli). It looks delicious but I was too full to try. I would go back again and recommend trying. However, if you are a vegan, I recommend going across the parking lot. read more

The bartender is super kind and attentive and he also cooked our food too. The outside is very spacious with plenty of group seating and has a TV outside facing the mountain rock which is beautiful. TWO pool tables which looked clean and well-maintained. Single mens/woman's bathrooms which were also cleaned and well maintained by the same amazing bartender. Split the Philly cheesesteak and fish tacos with my husband. The sandwich was ok, not great. We both wished we had ordered our own fish tacos. I'm so glad to see a new business thriving (under new management but same name) during COVID-19. We sat at the bar and enjoyed some local ciders and beers on tap. The bartenders were super attentive and gave off great vibes. It was extremely clean and you can tell they go above and beyond for Covid safety protocol with personal hand sanitizer bottles for every customer, QR code touch less menus and plexiglass barriers hanging to divide people. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but well worth a visit. They have a large indoor bar/eating area as well as an equally large outside seating area. Seating is first come first served, seat yourself. Our server was Lilly and she was awesome. She was a great change from the snobbish and "I don't give a crap" attitude we experienced in our several previous Stowe meals over the last couple days. Unfortunately, we're leaving Stowe tomorrow and the Backyard doesn't serve breakfast or we'd be back there again. Totally laid back but very attentive interaction with people who seemed to care. The menu was varied and while it is fairly typical bar / pub food, everything we had was served hot and was very flavorful. Among us, we had the BBQ burger, the salmon sandwich, the loaded tots, the Buffalo chicken tots and ice cold beer. By far the best meal experience we had here.
