Life is better with burritos I'm glad this place is not too far from my house. The burritos are enormous Taste? Delicious, spicy, juicy beef (ordered a carne asada). Can't ask for more. Plus there is an unlimited salad bar. Funny how some lady brought her own container to get these condiments Price? A little bit pricey for a burrito but it is huge with lots of meat. My first experience was at the location on University about 5 years ago. I went to the one in Mesa and the atmosphere is nice. It's very clean and the staff is very kind. I love the outdoor seating at the location on University because It's quaint and surrounded by greenery. The food is amazing !!!!!! This is a fun place for some tasty street tacos. It's a well known local joint that has classic street tacos. We got the steak and al pastor. The al pastor was slightly under welling as the pineapple wasn't nearly as potent as other places. However the carne asada was good! They had a decent portion of meat too. They are served on flour tortillas (not the usual for street tacos) which was a nice switch up and made them tasty. My husband liked blending the green and red salsas on his tacos. The horchata is good too and they have Mexican sodas which perfectly compliment a couple of street tacos. This place is worth a try!! read more

One word, " Yum." Go to the one in Mesa Arizona on UNIVERSITY DR. Its smaller but makes up for it. When you pull into the parking lot and smell the open pit aroma of sweet and spices from the wood smoker, yum yum, good. I will admit they are pricey for what you get but ooh so good. read more

What a nice place; very spacious, inside and out. Came before a concert on Sat. night, they were busy but our food arrived pretty fast. The (owner?) guy who took our order was beyond friendly and thrives in customer service; what a nice surprise in today's world! We live far from this location, but if we're in the area again we'll def. stop in for a reasonable, yummy taco/tostado. read more

I was excited to try this place because every time I drive by it's so busy, and tonight was no exception! We walked in and it smelled amazing. We ordered pastor tacos, a quesadilla and the "crazy potato", and an order of chips and beans all to go. The salsa bar is pretty awesome, I will say, lots of options and the salsas have great flavor. The tacos themselves were just ok, and the quesadilla was less of a quesadilla and more of a large flour taco. The crazy potato was just a weird combination of mashed mushy potato's without any seasoning, topped with taco meat and garnish. The beans were pretty bland, and they forgot to include my chips. The horchata was really good though! I'd say this place is ok, but probably not on my list of places to go back to. read more

I have been to Backyard Taco after my first review numerous time. It has now become my go to taco place especially for shredded meat. The consistency, quality of food and delicious taste keep us coming time and time again. I have recently tried their crazy baked potato and it was just as delicious.I usually go for the vegetarian one and I'm always tempted to try the one with meats but I have not yet. I also always order Jamaica which is my favorite drink. So cool and refreshing, I just love the flavor. The atmosphere here is very casual. I have come here during the day, at night, afternoon, it's always busy and buzzing with people. Prices are pretty average. Their menu options are pretty good but I always order the exact same thing which is Birria because I just absolutely love it. It's always juicy and tasty, I have not been there a single time and wasn't happy when I left. They do not serve any seafood items, so keep that in mind if you're interested in fish or shrimp tacos. I have come across their new Gilbert branch once. It looked really nice on the outside, very different from this location which is the original branch. One of my friends raves and raves about Backyard Taco, endlessly. Like within a few weeks of him taking me there, he, like a little puppy, asked me uber excitedly if I'd been back since. Haven't had a chance dude! I was surprised that at 9PM on a weeknight a) there was a line b) kids were awake in said line for dinner! You know it's legit if the line is long that late. My friend led the way and ordered a handful of tacos. I got a chicken, al pastor, and a carne asada. Al pastor was the best of the three. All over-flowing with fillings and a really good fresh tortilla. Their salsa bar isn't too bad either, especially the non-spicy salsas. I checked into Yelp to get the free chips & salsa, and I'm glad they were free. Quite the disappointment, the chips were stale and the salsa was just bad. Save the check-in and spend money on something else like a quesadilla or an extra side of guac or even an extra taco! read more

Came here after seeing one of their locations featured on AZ news channel and so happy we did! The meat is so well cooked due to the charcoal grill they have! All of their meat choices are cooked so well, and it's all due to their charcoal grill. I was pleasantly surprised with the steak potato as well. It's like a baked potato on steroids! Their location in North Mesa has limited seating inside due to COVID-19 but also has a shaded patio w/ fan and misters if inside seating is taken. Mask is required inside for ordering. read more

First time visiting this place at the insistence of one of my taco-loving friends. It was also nice being treated to free tacos as a late birthday gift (can't say no to free tacos)! Ordered the al pastor, carne asada, and birria (shredded beef) taco with all the stuffings (onions, cilantro, lime, etc.) The meats were very tender and flavorful on a nice warm bed of corn tortillas. The hot salsa was definitely a favorite of mine since I don't often find a spicy salsa with a solid kick to it. I still need to try their other menu items but for now, the taco selection was superb. Great street tacos for anyone looking for an authentic flair. read more

As a Californian, I have been to many taco stands, taco trucks, restaurants, you name it! I love tacos!!! These tacos are authentic grilled tacos that have a Smokey taste to them. My husband and I had the carne asada Gorditas, Al Pastor tacos, and a chicken taco. I personally loved the carne asada meat and chicken tasted Smokey just like our home made grilled chicken. The pastor flavor was good with chunks of pineapple but a little too dry for my taste... The horchata and agua de jamaica were both so refreshing. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone who loves tacos as much as I do. And lastly there is an outside cute area to eat for a casual night out. read more

This place is nasty... Food is gross and the meat tastes like rubber. Rocks have better personalities than the people who work here. Here is a tip: Ask for a barf bag or two before you leave. I'm being 100% literal in my review. Update: I received a response from the owner stating "Im sorry you do not like our food." When you get a review you try to find out what went wrong and try to fix it. Apparently, this owner doesn't want to make his business better. read more

Won't recommend Ordering over the phone. 20mins later I arrived. My order wasn't prepared until I walked in to pay. Waited another 15 for food. Ordered an extra taco Al pastor when I arrived, was given carne asada instead. Drove 30 mins for this spot because they had great reviews. Disappointed in the service. read more

Grabbed a friend yesterday and headed over to the original Backyard Tacos on University just east of Stanley in Mesa. Wow. Got there just before noon and thats a good thing! I ordered Carne asada, chicken tacos, chips and salsa and my friend got carne asada, beans and guacamole. Corn tortillas are bomb and the filling is so tasty, I was scooping it up with the chips. The salsa bar is full and complete with birria, pico, and tasty onions and cilantro. Now. Heres the catch. By 12:15pm, the line was all the way into the parking lot! Man, this place just gets over-run on people looking for good food. Please! Taco aficionados. If you haven't tried Backyard, do so. They have multiple locations and I know its all good, but original is still the best! Hahaha. Good eating everyone! read more

Came here on a Thursday. They do have taco Tuesday for $1.80 a taco, if I remember correctly. Regular price is around $2.20 or something close to that. Came around lunch time, right before he got super busy. Right after you parked their car and you're on your way inside, you can smell the meat. Always a good sign. They have a pretty big menu with all your basic stuff besides tacos as well. However I came wanting to try the tacos. I order a al pastor, carne asada and Pollo on corn tortilla. With everything that comes with it. Then I went over to the salsa bar, which was pretty good. They have a maybe for types of salsa. They had the spicy, on the green, and two other ones. And I had Limes which i loved. They also had the cucumber and the radish I believe. And they also had some of the onions, purple looking onions. And of course the pico de gallo. Overall, the salsa bar was amazing. You can keep refilling as you desire. Didn't take too long for the tacos to get made. Service was quick. cashier was friendly. Check the picture for the tacos. Taste: Overall, I could eat all the tacos a second time at the same sitting. Full of flavor, I also did add pretty much all these salsa and toppings on my tacos. The meats weren't too dry And they have flavor. For the al pastor Taco, they do have pineapple, but I did not get as much meat as I would have liked. For the carne asada and the pollo, you get a decent amount. Tacos were falling apart after I talked everything on the tacos. Use a fork. Parking lot is Tiny, and if you do come here around lunch time there might not be any parking. Restroom is clean. They do have outdoor seating as well with water sprinklers during the day. Seating inside is possible, could become limited real quickly. Overall, would definitely come here again for the tacos, especially on Taco Tuesday because of the price. Come here and check it out on a Tuesday! read more

Wow. Where has this place been all my life?! This place is all about great, fresh food served quickly. Served on styrofoam trays, beautiful tacos, gorditas, folded quesadilla, and crazy potatoes. We watched the cook grilling huge amounts of steak over a fire grill - a thing of beauty! The topper? Their salsa bar - not huge, but full of great options. Avocado sauce, different freshly made salsas and the best pico ever! Fresh limes, radish and cucumber. I'm in heaven! There are only a few tables indoors - several tables on their patio with fans. It's like coming to someone's backyard. They have a frequent visitor card also. There are no locations near me, but one is near my sisters house, so I'm going to visit a lot more. read more

Very authentic and delicious mexican cuisine. The women at the counter are nice although there have been times I've had difficulty understanding them. For the price, the food quality is very high. I've tried all the different proteins now between 2 trips and I love them all for different reasons. I still think my favorite is the birria tacos, but honestly everything I've tried was very good. Other than the Gordita (I'm not a fan of corn tortillas) I found everything to be delicious and the salad bar was full and clean when I used it. This review is a drop in the ocean of positive reviews of this place, but I wanted to chip in and agree. Perhaps the Yelp Recommendation gods will send me some more yummy authentic mexican food :) read more

Some taquerias in the Valley don't offer tacos al pastor, and then, at this place, the only taco worth getting is the taco al pastor! Three of these, their finely diced red onion, lime, and a refreshing drink, and you're good to go! read more

Co-workers told me it was good but not authentic. I went there for a casual business trip and I had the Carne Asada Burritto and it left me wanting more when I woke at 3AM the next day, with visions and cravings for anything from Backyard Taco! Good food, fast service, good salsa bar, and a decent variety of foods (tacos, burritos, tostadas, quesadillas, and gorditas) - you really can't complain about that! Prices are a little steeper than I would like but from the looks of it, it seemed like a lunch crowd favorite with most coming in to place an order to-go during the weekday lunch hour. The place is a little small but if you don't mind patio seating (or if the weather permits), you're golden. It's good food, don't get me wrong, but doesn't quite dethrone my go-to, Taquitos Jalisco, in my mind. A very strong contender, nonetheless! read more

Hailing from magical Mazatlan, Mexico, Ruben and Maricela know something about Tacos al Carbon. They started grilling for their family and neighbors in 2005. Ever since leaving, I've randomly craved these tacos constantly. I've tried other taco spots in Denver hoping something would compare, but honestly nothing really hit the same. So when I came back out to Phoenix recently to visit some friends, this was one of the first places I knew I needed to come back to because I had built it up so much in my head over time. And somehow... it was just as good again. The meat tastes incredibly fresh, flavorful, and well-seasoned, and you can literally watch them prepare everything right in front of you, which makes the whole experience even better. There's something so satisfying about seeing the tacos being made fresh instead of food just appearing from the kitchen. You can tell they care about quality and consistency. The servers were also super friendly and welcoming both times I came here, which honestly makes such a difference. Everyone had great energy, the service was quick, and the whole place just feels inviting and authentic. I honestly think the fact that I remembered this place so vividly for so long says everything. Usually when you revisit a restaurant after hyping it up in your head for years, it ends up disappointing you. But this place tasted exactly how I remembered it, fresh, flavorful, comforting, and absolutely worth the obsession. Safe to say this place is officially a mandatory stop for me anytime I'm back in Phoenix now.
