I went with my husband and two young children for dinner a few days ago, we ordered three hotpots - the pork bone marrow, the sweet and sour fish, and the oxtail; added a wagyu beef as a side, and the shaking beef. The portions of all orders were very small. The shaking beef was $28, and the amount of beef that they gave us was about the size of my palm. Due to the small portions, we added an extra wagyu beef. I can't decide if I like the Oxtail or the Bone Marrow hotpot more. I personally feel the Bone Marrow soup is good with rice and Oxtail soup is better with noodles. New spot for Vietnamese hotpot, something I haven't really seen done. For two people we shared an oxtail broth hotpot, duck slaw salad, and the lemongrass chicken platter. They do have a nice selection of sauces that they provide with the meal so definitely add those. The oxtail hotpot broth ($26) was rich and flavorful, maybe a bit oily, but fat is flavor... it's a single serving, and the pot is definitely on the smaller side but you can share between 2 people if you order another entree. Comes with 3 small pieces of oxtail bone with meat, and a small tray of veggies. The lemongrass pork ($23) was good as well, came with 3 skewers of grilled pork and one of their real crab eggrolls (cut in half), as well as veggies and woven rice noodles. The pork was pretty flavorful, some pieces were charred a bit on the edges but generally fine. Taste was as you'd expect from this dish, fish sauce is on the sweeter side. The crab egg roll was good, different than the typical cha gio. Wish they provided more than 2 lettuce leaves as we needed a lot more to make the wraps that this dish is meant for. Some pickled daikon and carrots on the side would have been nice too. $23 seems pricy but you get a decent amount of protein and we packed up about 2 skewers for leftovers. Duck slaw salad ($17) was a nice appetizer, no complaints. Also ordered a beer off the drink menu which was $9, a bit steep imo. I'm from LA so I got a bit of sticker shock looking at the menu here. The single portion hotpot is already $26-27 and adding a la carte meat can be +$10-15. If you have a big appetite this may not be the best place for you as you would need to spend a lot to feel full. But for two women with moderate appetites, it was just fine and we even had leftovers. It's definitely not a mom and pop type Vietnamese restaurant like you'd see in Little Saigon, but I understand cost of living and fair wages are higher here, and this is in Alameda. The Lau Pots are so small I was afraid it wouldn't be enough but it was plentiful . They weren't skimpy on the portions which is great considering it isn't cheap it's on the steep side . My partner and I visited Bacogai a few months ago. I was particulated excited to try their canh chua--a traditional Vietnamese soup that I grew up eating--in the form of a hot pot. Ultimately, while there's a lot to like about Bacogai, I felt it missed the mark, especially with the canh chua. What disappointed me the most was the lack of flavor. Perhaps the deconstruction--separating the broth and cold ingredients--affected the flavors in a negative way. Some of the ingredients also didn't quite work together. For instance, I felt the canh chua broth didn't work well with the pork. I also wasn't a fan of heating apparatus they served it on, as it only had one heat setting. It looked interesting, but I disliked that my soup stayed on high heat the whole dinner. I found myself preferring a simple, traditional bowl of canh chua for ~$15 (or my mom's for a lot less). This deconstructed hot pot version costs almost twice as much. There also seemed to be a general lack of direction in their menu and cuisine. An example is they provided three dipping options, including, randomly, Thai chili. It felt out of place, and I wasn't quite sure how to use the dips. The server told us we could use them however we wanted. The dips seemed like an afterthought. There was also sake on the menu, which seemed out of place. This added to the incohesion I felt during my dining experience. On their IG, they seem to emphasized the Vietnamese aspect, but it seemed much more like Asian fusion. There were definitely parts we liked though: - The ingredients seemed to be good quality. Including the pork, shrimp, and veggies. - My partner's bone marrow broth was delicious (more than my canh chua), and the meats tasted better cooked in it. The pork shoulder tasted amazing in this broth. - The crab chua gio was tasty (although not spectacular, as I couldn't find much crab in it). - The atmosphere and aesthetics felt modern and nice, if not a little bare. - The staff is friendly. TLDR, I would come here again, but some things definitely missed the mark. I would not come with a group. The plates aren good, but aren't meant for sharing (which is mentioned on the menu) which is annoying if you want to try a little bit of everything. My only concern was the fact they kept the door open and that we were seated directly in front of the door, leaving a cold breeze that we eventually forgot about as we ate our food. I would recommend coming in earlier. My favorite dish of the evening was the shaking beef. This was probably the most tender shaking beef that I have ever had at a Vietnamese restaurant. Another feature of the menu was the Vietnamese hot pot, and we got the Lau Canh Chua, which came with catfish, head-on shrimp, fish balls, lobster balls, tomato, bean sprouts, okra, bac ha, herbs, pineapple, and vermicelli, along with a sweet and sour tamarind broth, all boiled in a small pot at the table. The broth had plenty of flavor, but there were condiments offered on the side as well including fish sauce, chopped red chilies, and a fermented bean paste, which added even more variety. But my favorite dish was probably the Banh Hoi (woven rice noodles) with Beef La Lot, or minced beef wrapped and grilled in la lot leaves, which had a distinct herbaceous, earthy flavor. The rice noodles (which came in both white and purple) and grilled meat were served with fried shallots, scallions, lettuce leaves, a vegetarian cha gio (fried spring roll), and nuoc cham (sweet fish sauce), and combining all the ingredients into a wrap made for a perfectly balanced orchestra of flavors and textures. My husband and I ordered the oxtail and my best friend ordered the seafood hotpot. We read a lot of reviews that said it might not be enough food for one person / price point is on the expensive side for what you get. Love this place! I've gotten it take out a few times and have gone in to eat a couple times too and they never fail to impress me! I've tried all the lau's and personally, my favorite is the pork bone marrow one. But all of the broths are absolutely delicious!! Also, tried the beef luc lac and wow I was blown away. So freaking good. Will definitely order this again. The dessert was good too, nothing out of the ordinary though. It's always chill inside and I'm always able to get a table immediately. VEry comforting LAU CANH CHUA soup!! The great thing about hot pot is you can control your protein. The fish fillet was yummy and so I stayed with 1 refill of the fish. The veggies also yummy!! Very nice to have after my massage next door! Service was great! read more

I saw this place and thought, Vietnamese Hot Pot? I've never seen this before - I have to try this! Service: Nice, friendly, but overwhelmed. They had a rush of 24+ people all at the same time. Ambiance: Clean, modern, simple decorations. Bowls and plates had nice designs. 2 bathrooms Food: Beef Luc Lac -nice presentation, but the beef was tougher than usual. I thought there was more lettuce to wrap up your meat and noodles, but it came with two big green leaves. Lau Cahn Chua - the soup was pretty tasty! The fish filets were good. But, an individual serving portion at $27 is a bit pricey for what you get. They charge you for extra soup, as well. Kem + Caphe (affogato) - pretty good. Vanilla Bean ice cream with a shot of expresso. Delicious! Nice way to end the meal. read more

Portions are pretty small here but the food is delicious! I've never had Vietnamese hotpot before but this place blew me away! Warning though it might take a bit for your hotpot to come out. I think the chef makes each pot one at a time. My favorite one is the Lau canh chua it's protein is fish and the soup flavor is sour and salty so good! Service here is good too. read more

4.5 stars We tried this place, a party of nine, on Christmas Eve for a 2 PM reservation. Everything is very simple, and was really tasty. The portions aren't huge, most of us ate everything that we ordered. The service was great. It was a fun experience. even my Asian dad who is usually very picky about his food thought it was really good. We ordered the pork bone broth soup, the oxtail / beef tripe broth, seafood broth, and vegan broth. So I think we pretty much had all the choices on the menu. Overall everyone enjoyed their meal. the only reason why I gave it 4.5 stars instead of 5, is it was on the expensive side. read more

Never really knew Vietnamese hot pot existed, but enjoyed the experience. We had a nice lunch here on a Friday before it got too busy. Two of us split the lemongrass pork banh hoi (woven vermicelli with fresh lettuce, herbs and such, and a oxtail hot pot. The food quality was good, the portion size for the banh hoi was good, the hot pot was probably more just okay in terms of size. It is expensive for lunch and probably more a special occasion place or if you're seeking out a more upscale Vietnamese meal. The restaurant itself is lovely and still feels very new. It's in the Nob Hill shopping center in Alameda. And for the gluten free or GF adjacent, they do have a more than a few options. I was going back and forth between 4* and 5* -- the price probably made me think about keeping it at 4*, especially since "normal" Vietnamese food is usually less expensive. Enjoy! read more

Since I am an avid lover of hot pot and had never tried Vietnamese hot pot, I had to try this place out. I decided to get the Lau Oxtail hotpot because I love oxtail. The oxtail tasted great because it was flavorful and tender. If I ever come back, I would totally get this again. The server was really nice, and it was easy to get their attention. They also let us know that some people like to use the lids so the noodles cook faster.
