Love the Hawaiian spirit here! They greet you with an "Aloha!" Founded in 1989 on the Big Island of Hawaii, they sell Hawaiian coffees from Kauai, Waialua (Oahu), Maui, and Kona. They also sell blended drinks, tea, food, coffee grinders, and branded merchandise. My wife and I came for a taste of Hawaii. Other than coffee, a few food items are reminiscent of Hawaii. Unfortunately, they don't have loco moco, musubi, or kalua pig. We tried 5 items. 1) The Bad Ass One breakfast sandwich had spam, egg, swiss cheese, pineapple, and BBQ drizzle on King's Hawaiian bread. The spam had a texture like sliced deli ham. A good tasting sandwich with a nice blend of flavors: sweet, salty, and savory with a touch of tanginess from the bbq sauce. This was an enjoyable variation of a breakfast sandwich! FYI: Spam (classic) is a canned product made with pork (originally it was shoulder), ham, salt, water, modified potato starch, sugar, and sodium nitrite. Hawaii is the state with the highest spam consumption per capita at nearly 7 million cans per year. Waikiki has an annual Spam Jam festival during the last week of April. 2) The Bacon, egg, and cheddar sandwich had bacon, egg, and cheddar served on King's Hawaiian bread. Other than the King's Hawaiian bread, this sandwich was typical. It was surprisingly flattened, which made it look small. It tasted OK, but it wasn't special. 3) Hazelnut Hula latte had hazelnut, dark chocolate, and caramel. Alternative milk choices are coconut, oat, and almond. We got it with whole milk. The flavors were good, but 3 syrups made it too sweet for our taste. If there was a lower sugar version, this would be great. 4) 10% Kona blend coffee. We ordered 100% Kona, but the employee placed an order for the blend. That's a mistake that didn't bother us too much because we wanted to try all of their coffees, eventually. This was a medium roast with a medium body. It had notes of citrus and chocolate. It wasn't bitter or burnt. It was smooth and easy to drink with nothing added. 5) The Twisted Malasada was a doughnut with twists in it. It was coated with lots of cinnamon sugar. The cinnamon sugar was falling everywhere whenever the doughnut was moved. It's way too messy to eat. There were 2 doughnuts in an order. The exterior was slightly crisp, and the interior was soft, moist, and a little fluffy with a mild sweetness. It tasted like a light pound cake. I'd really love this if it wasn't so messy. FYI: Mal assada means "badly baked" in Portuguese. Malasada is a fried type of yeast doughnut made with eggs, butter, and milk or evaporated milk. The traditional Portuguese malasadas are coated with granulated sugar and do not contain holes or any type of filling. The exterior is fried to a golden brown until it is almost crispy. The interior is soft and fluffy. It should have the taste of eggs and be slightly sweet. It was brought to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants in the 19th century. Hawaiian style malasadas differ from Portuguese malasadas by having fillings, holes, and/or various toppings. The service was friendly and polite. Despite the order misunderstanding, we had a friendly conversation with one of the female workers. The dining room and restrooms were clean. The decor was calm and relaxing with plenty of pastel colors. Parking was not easy, but we found street parking and paid through an app. We plan on returning to try their 100% Kona coffee and to pick up some Hawaiian coffee beans. read more

Aloha to Bad Ass Coffee's entry into the DMV. They had a grand opening celebration this weekend, giving away 89 coffee mugs on Friday morning and 89 t-shirts on Saturday morning (with a purchase). Eight o'clock sharp both mornings. There was also a giveaway where after downloading the app, the customer could play Plinko and get another prize. The app also offers a free medium drink of your choice. My advise: If you haven't had 100% Kona, this is the time to get it. I think the cup I got was French pressed, because there was a lot of mud at the bottom of my cup. I did not watch the baristas make my coffee, and there were a lot of people in the store, as you might imagine for the grand opening. According to the wife/husband owners/management of this specific store, there are plans to expand to other locations in the DMV, so hopefully they will open some shops in Maryland and the District proper barring any unforeseen external circumstances. Decided to check out the new coffee shop in the neighborhood and I wasn't disappointed! At their recommendation, I tried the 100% Kona coffee and the Blueberry Lemon muffin. Both of these were very good and the muffin has yogurt filling which is a first for me but i actually enjoyed it. There isn't a lot of seating but the ambience and employees were very welcoming. Overall positive experience and great service, I'll be back to try more! read more

A good bad ass coffee and pricy in the same time. Service is slow and definitely want to do the online order if possible. If you came in during the rush hours or mid-morning break. You expected to wait for a while. I only saw two people working today and the line was like 10 peoples and online orders. So, you know the coffee is good. The spam sandwich was ok, but you need to try at least one time. The iced coffee came with coffee cube which is so cool : ) There were not many chairs that you can sit inside to chat. Really want to love this place, but.... The coffee, it just isn't very good (i.e. drip coffee). Tried both the 100% Kona and regular, not impressed with either, both tasted thin/"tinny" (or whatever the opposite of rich/full-bodied is). And as expensive as the 100% Kona is, I'd expect to be blown away. I've also tried the lattes, and I can hardly even taste any coffee in them. This is based on about 4 visits, I will still keep trying every so often in the hopes that my opinion improves, because I want to love my local non-Starbucks coffee shop. Visited the cafe on a cold winter morning before work. The Hawaiian theme immediately felt very warm and welcoming. Friendly staff, decent coffee. The store front is very small, maybe three groups of two and there was no more seating than that. Small extent of selection for drinks, they allowed me to modify a latte into a cortado. The drink was crafted with care and was well balanced. However, way too much milk for a cortado, it was more like a cappuccino. In comparison to the top shops of DC I'd give it around a 6/10. My only complaint is if you want to sit down and enjoy your drink or food, forget about it! They only have 3 tables. That place can hold way more tables but they are taking up so much room with their merch they are trying to sell. This coffee shop is not particularly large, it has a few tables & chairs for sitting, and I had trouble determining if there was any sense of Hawaiian aesthetic. It felt like one of countless DC area generic clean cut coffee shops on the ground floor of an apartment building, lacking in personality. Most milk tea shops even have a better aesthetic than this place. Service was friendly, no real complaints there. We ordered an iced 100% kona coffee, and an iced 10% kona blend coffee. I noticed barely any difference between the two; the 100% kona coffee felt more like 15%. Both coffees while black tasted bland and slightly sour. With cream & syrup, the taste was slightly more smooth, but extremely average. In addition I found the 100% kona coffee to be extremely overpriced for no reason (over $6 for a medium!!). I understand that some people enjoy this sort of vibe and taste of coffee. I think I'll stick to Peet's. read more

If you order a 20oz, bring your own cup otherwise your cup will be half full - I didn't start getting a full 20oz until I brought my own cup. I came here with my friend on the opening day. The parking is metered. I came here on a weekday afternoon and didn't have problem finding parking. I was contemplating on what to get, and the staff was super helpful with recommendations. I ended up getting the Kreme De Kona, and it was really good but too sweet. Was visiting the Alexandria area and looking to try somewhere new since we were growing bored of Starbucks. Saw this place and loved the name so we decided to try it. We downloaded the app to see what the menu options were and I loved the variety they had. I ordered a hot cafe latte with a double kick of espresso for my partner he said it was good but not as strong as he normally likes, for myself I ordered an iced three wave latte which was delicious you could taste all 3 flavors; the caramel, coconut, and macadamia nut, paired together it was great...great for a summer morning. I love that the ice in the iced coffee is made of coffee, I'm a slow coffee drinker and this made my drink less watered down than when I get iced coffee elsewhere. Because we used the app we also got a free lemonade so we ordered a dragonfruit lemonade it share, it wasn't bad but it was too sweet for our taste. The staff were friendly when we picked up our drinks and the place itself was adorable, had a very Hawaiian feel. Overall I wish there was a Bad Ass Coffee shop near me, but until then I will definitely be back next time I'm in the Alexandria area! read more
