I live in Woodside technically which is just a few blocks east of this place. Woodside is technically the hood for most of Astoria with the Woodside Houses being probably the fear factor for many recent additions to Queens. I am a resident of the Woodside Houses and finally a bagel shop nearby home. Ive been a resident of Woodside Houses for 34 years now and this is the first bagel place I am proud to go to. There is another bagel shop on the other side of Woodside closer to jackson heights but nothing to compare. I usually just get a simple bagel toasted with butter and some iced coffee and it suits me fine. read more

I really, really, really want to give Bagels & Brew 5 stars but with only having eaten from here once, I've gotta eat from here again before I notch it up one. The sandwich as composed of their "Blazing Buffalo Chicken" with lettuce, tomato, cheese, etc and came with a small side cup of macaroni salad and a small bag of original Lays potato chips. Real solid old-school bagel joint in Astoria. There is nothing 21st century about this place, and the customers reflect the population over time: cops, construction workers, and other locals. The bagel was very hard, and this is because it was a day old bagel--at 7am, in NYC, I never heard of getting a day old bagel. They MUST have known the bagel was hard, why would they even send it out?It was not good and was tossed. They obviously did not have any hard boiled eggs (even though they offered them on seamless), because they sent me two very hot eggs just cooked soft ones, which were pealed and broken into several pieces inside a cup. I paid near $13 for this (with coffee--which was good) and it was all tossed. When you call, they don't communicate on the phone clear enough to have a discussion--language barrier? I am highly lactose intolerant and I am certain it wasn't tofu cream cheese. It tasted too good and wasn't the typical chalk white color of the tofu. I've been coming here for years! Since I left to Florida and since I've moved back. It's a great bagel place - FRESH! Bagels are delicious and soft on the inside. They have a great selection of bagels, they even make their own bagel chips which is pretty cool! They're not stingy with the amount of cream cheese they put on your bagel. Try the home fries! The Bagels here are real, New York Bagels. None of this bread/frozen/ fake pre-cooked imitations, (like dunkin donuts, sh*tbucks), but a great big chewy, tasty, soft bagel! I like their everything bagels! For $1.00, you can get one of their bagels, which is fine with nothing on it. - THat's how tasty they are. For $2.00, you can indulge in a bagel with cream cheese!! They also have small bagels, for $.60 and squished bagels. For $1.00, pick up a bag of their bagel chips, which I think is one of their best deals!! Real slices of bagels that are baked to a CRUNCH! They have coffee, which I can testify is good, and other drinks, and food available. Sure, you could go to Island Bakery (across the st), and get yourself a bagel from them for $.40, but it just doesn't compare to what a bagel should taste like!! And, they're not fresh, as they are delivered the night before. If you want a REAL Bagel!, come here! There is no other place I've been to here in Astoria, that has a good tasting bagel! Bagels are popping up everywhere in Astoria! I lost track of how many new bagels shops have opened up in the last year -- enough to justify doing a best bagel in Astoria list. . . After several weeks of watching Bagels & Brew getting the place ready, I just had to walk in when I saw that they were open today. Any Astorian bagel shop has stiff competition with Brooklyn Bagel; they have a loyal Astorian following and for a good reason -- it's hard to beat those bagels. How did B & B fare? B & B has one thing going for it -- convenience. It's closer to my home. I got my usual -- poppy seed with scallion cream cheese. The bagel is lighter and smaller than Brooklyn's and not as thickly seeded. The interior is fluffier, not quite a dense, but still has a good chew to be a satisfying bagel. Pretty good crust. They do deliver and the minimum order is only $7.50 (instead of $10 for Brooklyn Bagel). They have a lot of great breakfast specials -- $2 for an egg sandwich on a bagel ($2.75 for two eggs). Friendly quick service. It's a good place to grab a quick bite for breakfast on your way to work for us Astorians who live on the east side and for when you don't have time for Brooklyn's long lines. read more

I like this place more than Brooklyn Bagel. The bagels here are just as good as Brooklyn Bagel and in the case of the everything bagel I would say these are better. The everythings at BkBagel have too much salt on them. That's a small criticism, sure, but that is about all you could find wrong with the bagels there. The Bagels and Brew everything is much more balanced without giving up any of the zesty flavor you want out of an everything. Aside from the everything, any bagel at Bagels and Brew could go toe to toe with what they have a Brooklyn Bagel, just on sheer quality. The egg sandwiches are excellent, they have a very similar selection of cream cheeses as bk bagel, and their deli sandwiches, served on bagels, are generously portioned and delicious. Where Bagels and Brew really ices the deal is on price and convenience. I have never once had to wait on line at Bagels and Brew. Hopefully that will last; the place is so new that not that many people in the area who have been putting up with the line at brooklyn bagel know about this place. BK Bagel is definitely overpriced, I got a mini cinnamon raisin bagel with peanut butter there and they charged me 3.50 for it! A mini bagel! I can get a full size cinnamon raisin bagel toasted with pb for 2 at B's and B. The place is brand new, very clean, fairly priced, well staffed, and second to none in bagel quality. Bagels & Brew is what a neighborhood bagel joint should be. Building off another reviewer, not only do I like this more than Brooklyn Bagel, I actively detest the latter establishment. What matters to me, nearly as much as the product, is loyalty. Something I have in spades. Bagels & Brew possesses two things I crave. A great everything bagel and sincere affability. Bagels & Brew is a perfect excuse to put yourself into a bagel induced coma. The bagels are heavy but they are delicious. Their outer crust is as rugged as Tatooine, the center is as dense as the forests of Endor and well after you eat it you'll feel like you were in a cantina fight in Mos Isley. I had been here 2x previously and thought the bagels were great! Light and fluffy on the inside. I recently was driving in Queens with my coworker and his daughter and turned around going out of my way several miles to pick up some bagels and have one while we were there. My hands were filthy from work. When I went in I asked the owner or manager if there was a sink where I could wash my hands. I don't exactly look homeless. He abruptly said "NO". not... Hot hazelnut flavored coffee and they even put skim milk in it for me. My dreams have come true. My favorite bagel place that I have been to in NYC. I frequent this establishment often. The workers there are always friendly, quickly preparing the food, and always getting the order correct. My brother and I met for lunch here the other day. My brother had mentioned that they have great bagels, so that's exactly what both of us got. He ordered an everything bagel scooped out with tuna salad. It looked good and he confirmed that it was delicious. I got an everything bagel toasted and scooped out with their cheddar and jalapeño cream cheese. It was good, but the bagel was toasted a few seconds too long. I was also hoping the cream cheese would be spicy because of the jalapeño, but it wasn't at all. It tasted more cheddary than anything. I got an iced coffee too which was decent.
