    Teeny tiny shop with only 2 small tables out front (sidewalk seating). I walked in around 9:30am on a Saturday morning and there was a small line (10ish people). Parking isn't great here, especially on Saturday morning since there is a farmers market down the street. I was able to find parking in a lot in front of CorePower Yoga. I am never in this area so ordered more than I should since it's not the easiest to get to. Ordered the Okonomiyaki Danish (2), Green Onion Croissant, Yuzu Meringue Bun, Croisubi and a Matcha Latte with a cream top (forgot the name but some sort of coconut flavor). Out of all the pastries I ordered, the Okonomiyaki Danish was my favorite and will 100% reorder whenever I find myself in this area. The flavors, filling, uniqueness - everything about this was delicious. The other pastries were good but I was slightly disappointed with the Croisubi which is their version of a ham & cheese croissant but made with Spam. I might be wrong but the Spam didn't taste like actual Spam but one of those Spam subsitutes. It wasn't bad by any means, but I was expecting the distinctive and salty taste of Spam. The pastries were all really good but I do not recommend the matcha latte for individuals who like their drinks slightly sweeter. They use a decent matcha powder but even after adding the extra cream top, my overall latte was 5% sweet. Not sure how when cream tops usually balance out the matcha taste with a bit of sweetness. But for some reason, the cream top here had barely any sweetness so keep that in mind if you order the matcha latte. I actually saw a guy who ordered a matcha latte before me come back inside the bakery to ask why it had no sweetness.

    I got the latte and added pandan cream on top. It was good. Flavor of pandan could have been stronger but good. The chocolate banana croissant was SO GOOD. I wish it had a tad more banana but it was ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!!!!! Staff are super nice! Long line but it goes by fast. Only like two small tables outside so not really a place to sit and chat - more like grab and go. The cashier told me they recently opened another cafe in Alameda, one with a parking lot. Thank goodness! Because parking was terrible!!

    I've tried going to bake sum on like three different occasions, but always gave up because I couldn't find parking lol well we finally made it in a few weeks ago and it def lived up to the hype! I loveeee flaky savory pastries so the okonomiyaki danish and the croissubi were right up my alley. My fave was hands down the okonomiyaki danish. The flavors blended together sooo well and the puff pastry on the outside complemented it so well. I reheated it in the air fryer when I got home, and it was perfection. The croissubi was also good but I think I just don't like the flavor of seaweed and spam together that much lol I get that that's exactly what a spam musubi is, so that's a me issue. Maybe it would have been better if there was more spam. Then we also got a jasmine and honeydew milk bun because I also love cream filled pastries. Surprisingly, I actually liked the honeydew more than the jasmine, even though I'm normally more into tea flavors and don't particularly enjoy the flavor of honeydew. But this one was fragrant and not too overpowering or artificial tasting. Overall rlly nice. I also love that the shop sells art from local creators and small batch goods! I was able to pick up some hey doh silky soy sauce, which was really nice and better than I expected!

    After drooling after these fun, creative ideas online for a while, I was happy I finally got to try Bake Sum! They switch up the menu every month, so it's fun to see what creative ideas with Asian flair they come up with next! ** Strawberry kinako croissant (4/5): cute croissant muffin shape with a soybean powder cream filling topped with a few strawberry slices. It was a very straightforward soy flavor without any discernible strawberry flavor. I'm a fan of that soy flavor, so it paired well with the sugary croissant bread (which was nicely laminated and textured)! Wonder if it would taste better with more strawberry flavor? :) ** Croissubi (4.5/5): this one is one of their signature pastries. I didn't try this one but MT really enjoy this and gobbled it all down! He said it wasn't as salty as a traditional spam masubi and really enjoyed it. ** chocolate banana croissant (3.5/5): I'm biased as I'm not a huge banana fan and this one was stronnnnng on the banana flavor. The topping/filling is also on the runny side so it's a messy treat! The croissant bread portion wasn't very light and airy but the heartier texture probably worked better with the liquidy filling. I can see banana lovers really enjoying this one though! ** mochi bites (2/5): tried the brown butter and the black sesame-- the first one didn't taste like anything and the black sesame was fragrant but not sweet enough for me. They might have tasted better warmed up though? ** black sesame snickerdoodle cookie (3.5/5): crunchy crispy edges with a softer, chewier but still slightly cakey interior. It had the fragrance of black sesame but mostly tasted like a sugar cookie instead of a snickerdoodle (I'm a cinnamon lover so really missed the cinnamon on this!). ** cocobae cookie (4/5): coconut and ube! Definitely fragrant and flavorful with both the coconut and ube flavors. The texture was also crunchy/crispy on the edges and softer/slightly chewy/slightly cakey in the middle. Not my favorite texture but this had a better flavor profile than the black sesame cookie in my opinion. Service was pleasant and straightforward. There are some cute stationery, pins, cookbooks, etc. to browse too. No inside seating, but there are a few tables outside to enjoy your treats. I'm happy that I checked out this super cute shop, and although I probably won't be back in a while (I'm from out of town), it's worth checking out if you're in the area!

    First, I want to give special recognition to the okonomiyaki danish. The creativity of this pastry truly surpassed my expectations. I was especially impressed by the distinct layers of flaky, buttery dough. The flavors were spot on, highlighting the signature cabbage along with a rich brown glaze and mayo that perfectly captured the essence of okonomiyaki. Another standout was the milk conchas. My favorite was the strawberry--it was exceptional. The concha shape and texture were beautifully executed, and the addition of luscious cream made it even more indulgent. I'm still thinking about how delicious that strawberry one was.

    The owner was super friendly and helpful. There are a bunch of great looking cookbooks for sale in the store. And the pastries were so good! The yuzu meringue bun was balanced really well - nice and tart and not too sweet or heavy. The okonomiyaki was my other favorite - super tasty. Will be back!

    01/17/26 Another successful delicious trip to Bake Sum! How do they come up with the ideas for these insanely delicious pastries! Here's Joyce, the brains behind the magic. She doesn't claim all the glory. She said it's a team effort... but we know it takes leader with a vision The Vietnamese Coffee Milk bun is oh so delicious!....delicate milk bread filled with a rich Vietnamese coffee cream... not sweet but just right! The lilikoi tart is perfect with the crispy shortbread like crust and tangy filling... croissants are always perfect. I still didn't try the yuzu meringue bun but Im confident it's another winner!

    We came for the Asian fusion croissants, which were indeed delicious, but actually I really liked the black sesame cookie, and the hojicha cookie (hojicha is roasted matcha). Do check their website for store hours, we timed our visit to be right after lunch since they were scheduled to close from noon to 1 pm for their lunch as well. On Sundays there are free street parking, and if you wanted to dig into your treats right away, they had a few little tables with stools outside as well.

    Matt continues his excellent East Bay Bakeries tour. In 2024, the New York Times said that the Croissubi at Bake Sum was one of 26 best dishes across the US. I had to try it. The Crosissubi is essentially a croissant. "Topped with Parmesan and togarashi, a blend of dried red chile, sesame seeds and seaweed, the flaky, laminated layers form the perfected honeycomb cavern of a traditional croissant -- with Spam suspended in the middle." The addition of seaweed is not a favorite food palate of mine, but definitely worth a try I also purchased the Almond Cake which pairs nicely with a hot coffee or tea, it's moist and not too sweet. I'd go back daily for this simple treat. And the Chocolate Chunk Cookie with Maldon Salt. So many interesting cookie options to choose from, but how could I say no to a Chocolate Chunk Cookie. Baked goods seem to be on a rotation, so each time you visit you may find something different to try. Matt says if you are in the Grand Avenue area for the Farmers Market or taking in a movie at the Grand Lake theater, it's a short walk to Bake Sum.

    Bake Sum opened where Fog City Bakehouse once was. Small display counter where sales are also placed. Choose bakes & drinks of choice. Both will arrive within minutes. Seen long lines before. Not today. Arrived just before the lunch break. No seating inside. 4 tables outside. Parking easier to find one block over near Starbucks... Bake Sum is known for their innovative bakes which fuses Asian American food flavas with American & European bakes. Offerings are ever changing. Drinks the usual: matcha, teas, lattes, cold brew.. Most bakes should be eaten asap. Dryness changes flava profile. Cookie lasts the longest. Bites: black sesame snickerdoodle cookie(4.50) -the usual buttery, sugared, vanilla extract tinged thick moist cookie infused with black sesames & roasted black sesame essence. Exquisite! Gochujang pull apart(5.50) -mini bread cubes aka pull a parts with familiar flava with strong glaze of spicy, slightly hot gochujang sauce, green onions, veggie shreds.. Okonomiyaki Danish (5.75) -usual flaky danish & flava with toppings of green onions, veggie shreds, bonito flakes, kewpie mayo, okonomiyaki sauce. A symphony of yumminess. Passion fruit lime cruffin(8) -looks like a mini beehive. Whipped cream & dried thin lime section on top. Typical cruffin breading. Inside filled with passion fruit purée, lime zest. -nice clash of tart and semi sweet notes. 5 stars worthy. Quality: excellent Quantity: reasonable.

    I first saw Bake Sum on the show Bay Area check please and had it bookmarked. Finally stopped by and everything I tried was good. I liked the chocolate cookie with meldan salt. Crispy edges and soft middle. The jasmine milk bun was good too along with lychee mochi bite. Nothing was overly sweet which I liked. The service by the young gal was nice too. Street parking only.

    We do not bake with any peanuts in our kitchen. I do want to mention that we do have almonds in many of our products.

    Is there anything that's gluten free?

    Hi John - All our mochi bites are gluten free and Lola Zenny's Leche Flan is also gluten free, but we don't currently have the Flan on the menu currently. We hope to offer more gluten free items in the future!

    Has anyone tried their cookies?

    I tried the black sesame snickerdoodle! I heard other cookie flavors are crunchier but this one was chewy and of course, very nutty. It's huge so it will fill you up/ share with someone!

There are glass cases full of breads, cakes, eclairs, tarts and other delicious looking baked goods. On the top of the cases are jars with a variety of cookies to choose from, as well as, one of my favorites, their lemon shortbread bar. The lemon shortbread bar is amazing. They stack the wedges in a large lidded glass jar, each wedge separated with a sheet of white parchment paper. I believe this is one of the hidden gems at La Farine. The shortbread crust Is tender and buttery and hold holds it shape well when you bite into it. The lemon curd is creamy with the right amount of tang, and there is a thin sweet layer of crunch on top of curd that puts this bar over the top. The balance of textures and flavors is perfect. I also highly recommend the chocolate eclairs. Each one is filled with a generous amount of piped whipped cream, a pate choux with good flavor and texture, and topped with a rich, silky layer of chocolate ganache. Overall their prices are reasonable -lemon shortbread bar $3, and chocolate eclair 3.50. I decided to give La Farine four stars because on a previous visit I had a slice of the Moka cake, and was not impressed. It is an attractive and delicious looking cake with lovely pale moka colored frosting surrounding layers of dark chocolate cake, however, the frosting lacked the coffee and chocolate flavor combo that I was looking forward to, and sadly the frosting was more waxy than creamy. That being said, I will definitely be back to search for the next delicious gems at this very lovely bakery on Piedmont Ave.

If you're ordering more than 1 pizza, I'd recommend calling ahead of time so that you don't have to wait a while. There's typically 2 cashiers, always a small line, but you'd be in and out under 30 minutes max. No music, just the sounds of pure hustle trying to get everyone served. There is limited indoor and outdoor seating so keep that in mind. Parking may be tricky as well as there are a lot of surrounding businesses.

Service was friendly and efficient, and the staff were happy to answer questions about the day's offerings. The vibe is warm, casual, and community-oriented. There's a neighborhood charm to the bakery that makes it feel welcoming and authentic. Overall, a great local spot for fresh pizza, quality baked goods, and a cozy atmosphere. I'll definitely be back to see what seasonal items they have next time.
