Since I've been rating BBQ lately, thought I should cover Baker's. It's very good and certainly one I'd recommend. I would disagree that it's better than Corky's in Memphis but still for Minnesota, it's purty dern goot. I also lived in Memphis, Dallas, Cincinnati and St. Louis so have pretty good BBQ credentials. Until Dickies arived Baker's was my number one choice, now it's about a tie with FD's 3rd. I hit Baker's at least once a month as I work in EP. I almost always order the 4 rib lunch special with a caesar salad. I eat the ribs dry, no sauce. YUM!. If you have to put sauce on your ribs, they aren't good ribs. If they had beer i'd come for dinner but they don't so i don't. I do agree with others about the smell sticking with you all day. I like it but understand why some, especially women don't. Love the free peanuts, nice touch. There's often a short line at lunch but it moves quickly so don't be deterred. read more

A little hole-in-the-wall gem in Eden Prairie. Located across from the mall, and within spitting range of several other smokehouses this place isn't to be overlooked. Upon walking in, you step into the broken shells of the free peanuts and immeidiately notice a claw-foot bathtub packed with ice & glass-bottled soda. The smoked meat - wether it be ribs, the brisket, or even chicken is a cut-above, you'll just have to experience it yourself. The sides are all home-made and fresh - the potato salad is to die for. Not to be missed is the "Thursday Fried Potatoes" a mix of fried potatoes, peppers, onlons a special spices. If you show up after 11:45, expect them to be out as they only make two pans at a time. The most amazing thing is the sauce they leave on the table for you - wether you show up at 11AM or at 1:30, it's hot! I've been here dozens of times and never seen them change it out, so I can only assume there is some nuclear fuel rods involved. That said, you might get scared off by the fact that they often shortly re-heat the meat in microwave - it doesn't seem to affect the texture of the meat in anyway. I went there and felt very uncomfortable being waited on. They acted like they had never seen a African American before. I was asked what I wanted by the person acting as the cashier. Once I replied and pointed to a slab of ribs on one of the piles they had exposed. The Asshole had the nerve to tell me I could have it, if the white couple in front of me didn't want it. I made no reaction to his stupidity. I took my order to go and notice as I was getting into my Mercedes, one of the employees was had come behind the counter to stare at me getting into my car. Baker's is a great place to spend your hard earned money. The food is real. I go once a week, since I started working close to it. Great ribs, great brisket. Dirty rice is awesome! I always get the sliced brisket plate with dirty rice and a caesar salad. Of course, some days are better than others, as with any place. Overall great place for real food. Another "Texas" BBQ place. It's clean and the person working the counter was friendly. You order at a counter, get your food and sit in the dining area. In Texas tradition there's a little area that allows you to add some dill pickle slices, raw onion and/or jalapeno slices to your plate. I had the rib plate with baked beans and Cole slaw. The first thing that really caught my eye was that as soon as I order, a person behind the counter unwraps the cooked ribs, slides off half a rack and microwaves them. I don't think I've ever seen them do that in Texas. The ribs were lightly smoked. The smokey taste is very subtle. I spoke to the man behind the counter and he said that hickory was too expensive so they use oak exclusively. The ribs are the "fall of the bone" variety meaning they have been boiled or parboiled or somehow braised. The result is a rib that is, in my opinion, mushy. Some people prefer their ribs that way; I don't happen to be one of them. Unlike the typical Texas BBQ joint the sauce isn't molasses based. It's a very runny tomato based sauce with a very unusual taste. It does have elements of both sweetness and spice so it certainly qualifies as BBQ sauce, but the taste is unusual. I liked it, but it they should have an alternative sauce. The beans have the sauce in them so they have the same unusual taste. The slaw was a little wetter than I like, but it wasn't mushy. As mentioned by other reviewers, the prices make the BBQ here an excellent value. The rib plate with two sides cause $11.89. A pretty good deal. All in all a positive experience and I would go back. read more

Had to visit the place because of all the positive reviews. Ordered the sliced brisket sandwich and a side of coleslaw. Very disappointed. As another reviewer said, the meat was dry. Very flavourless. The barbeque sauce was just weak. I personally was looking forward to a great Friday night dinner and it was ruined. I "may" go back again to give it a second try.... but maybe I'm expecting a lot since I've had the same sandwich in many American cities? Or it might have just been an "off day"?? But come on... This place is made for people who just want Americana delicious tasting food. The decor isn't the most appealing but it's actually quaint and simple. Love the old bear claw tub filled with ice with old school glass sodas including grape, orange, root beer, etc. I had the ribs and potato salad. The ribs were very tender and seasoned well. Oddly enough, there's a Baker's Ribs in Minnesota and another related location in Texas. I don't know what the relation is, but they must be sharing some secrets of BBQ. The old classic standby of low and slow holds true here -- some great BBQ cooked Texas-style with emphasis on seasonings and meat rather than sauces as one would find in Kansas City or Carolinas BBQ. Great Ribs! Perfectly smoked with a nice char on the outside and the meat falls off of the bone. Texas Toast and baked beans were great as well. If love ribs you should give this place a try. Really love this place, the meat is very good, I'd say it's more of a dry BBQ, and you can add as much sauce as you'd like at the table. The sides are very good, potato and pasta salad are awesome. I've been here maybe a dozen times over the past few years and have yet to ever see it busy. My only negative is the price and portions... I feel it's priced quite high for the small amount you get, I realize BBQ is not always a cheap meal but $10-13 for 3 or 4 ribs and a side is a little ridiculous. The best BBQ in the Twin Cities as far as I am concerned. There was a point in time when I worked down the road where I ate here once a week. I regret nothing. Sure, I gained a little weight eating their delicious ribs, sausage, turkey, chicken, pork brisket, potato salad, Cole slaw, beans and rice but IT WAS WORTH IT. I asked the man behind the counter what he suggests and he stated the brisket was fresh out of the cooker. It was honestly the best brisket I have had in years.
