As a Mexican I'm offended that they sell "esquite". It was cold and it had like cumin and it didn't taste like a traditional esquite.

It's been a few years since I've been back to Bakersfield and it's still as good as I remember! We got the trio appetizer which comes with 2 salsas and guac. All three dips were great with chips, but I especially loved the rojo salsa! I got the pineapple margarita which was good, but had a very strong canned pineapple taste. I do wish the pineapple flavor was a little more subtle but it was still good. I tried out 3 different tacos- the baja shrimp, fish, and short rib. I loved each one I tried but the shrimp was probably my favorite. My only suggestion would be adding some desserts to the menu! Service was good and we got our food and drinks pretty quickly which was great. Make sure to get a reservation ahead of time because this place gets packed! read more

The tacos here are all right. They are not authentic but Bakersfield is a chain. I didn't get a whole lot of flavor in my fish and carnitas tacos. The Al pastor was all right. The pollo diablo was real spicy which my group liked. They also liked the shrimp and the short rib tacos. We did have a large group and they were able to sit us. They also have an outdoor seating area so we were able to bring our dog. The waitress was really nice and gave her a thing of water. They have really generous margarita pitchers so if you get more than 3 of one, you should definitely go for a pitcher. Overall, good spot with ample seating for large groups. Got their classic margarita and it is one of the best ones I've ever had super refreshing and bartender was super attentive. Bakersfield Is one of my favorite restaurants. It has been consistently delicious since they opened years ago. I first went to one in Nashville and was so happy when they opened one here. We have had appetizers, drinks, tacos and sandwiches. Everything has been amazing. The chips and guacamole are always creamy, flavorful and delicious. I must get the short rib taco every time that I go. They are so moist, tender, flavorful and absolutely amazing. Short rib is one of my favorite things. Their version of it is excellent. I had the Baja Shrimp once. it was good and I enjoyed it. However, the short rib will always be my favorite. My husband really likes the carnitas. Our other friends got it as well as takeout for Light Up Night. The pineapple margarita is unbelievable. I loved it. If you like upscale Mexican, you will love Bakersfield. This is the best place in the city for tacos. I've been here several times. Each experience gets better. You have the option to choose a taco. Each taco is small and only $4. The chips and salsa they offer is very good. However if you're going to do a HH it tends to get very crowded and loud. They have a wide range of beers on tap locally and nationally. I've been here probably 30 times since I wrote this review. This places has amazing little tacos, but they will fill you up for sure. I think hands down best taco join in the city. They have two areas to sit. Upstairs and downstairs. I think downstairs is better relaxed. They have a long bar downstairs. I've been here for happy hour after work and it gets packed pre-covid, and still up to now it's always packed and difficult to get into with long waits, but well worth it. read more

We had a 5:15 reservation because we had tickets to see Taylor Tomlinson at 7 pm. We arrived to find the place completely packed. We were told that our table wasn't ready. As we waited, more people with reservations were coming to find their tables were not ready. There was no turnaround on the tables. I asked the hostess if she had a sense for the wait and could only apologize. We waited until 5:45 then decided to leave because even if we got a table, there was no chance our food would arrive on time. Complimentary margaritas were offered to everyone who had to wait. Several would be patrons with reservations ended up leaving. Bakersfield was disorganized and not taking people in order of their reservation. I noted a 5:30 reservation getting seated before a couple who also had on-time 5:15 reservations. I felt badly for the hostess, who had to keep apologize as the wait grew. We walked over to Social House who politely stated they were only taking reservations for the rest of the night because they were full (great idea) so we ended up at Bae Bae's kitchen. I always wanted to go and there it was for the win. We got a text from Bakersfield that our table was ready at 6 pm! 45 minutes after our reservation. I see at least one other person on yelp with the same issue about their reservations. How can it be so packed when you have a line of reservations? Except if you are also taking walk-ins. Doesn't make sense. Probably the worst "almost" in-dining experience in years. Don't come here if you have other plans and want to spend hours at this place. read more

Note - I'm a spicy-sensitive person, so I checked with our server prior to ordering to see which tacos were spicy, and if so, could they leave out whatever component that was hot. Carnitas $4 Juicy marinated pork, but spicy! Definitely wasn't prepared for the tingle. Comes with a dab of guac, sliced jicama, pickled red onions, tomatillo cream, and cilantro. Shrimp $4 Sauce is spicy but you can ask for them to leave it off. Each taco comes with 3 large fried shrimps that are delicious. I didn't realize mine was missing guac until I looked at the menu again later on, Bisteca $4 Love the meat! Tender and succulent cubes of steak. The slaw that it's topped with though is spicy... The kind of spicy that throws fire on your tongue and burns down your throat. I'm not quite sure if the meat itself was also marinated in a spicy sauce or if it was the coleslaw sauce that seeped through. Short Rib $4 Yumm. This was probably the only taco I didn't have issues with in terms of unexpected spiciness. Comes with queso fresca, crema, pickled white onions, radish, cilantro. Delicious! The tacos all come on a thick house-made corn tortilla. Slightly sweet. You can taste the real corn grains used. I love the atmosphere and drinks at Bakersfield but have been underwhelmed by the food. Their spicy margarita is to die for! We got a pitcher to split between three of us and each got about two drinks out of it. It was the perfect amount of "spicy" and tasted much more fresh than some other Mexican restaurants that go heavy on the mixers. We also ordered the queso to start off with, and I thought it was very average... nothing special and kind of bland tasting. We also ordered a few tacos, and again, I felt that these were also a bit bland. While they do offer some different ingredients and options, they lacked in any type of seasoning or spice. We stuck with tacos, and I got the pollo verde, the braised short rib, and fish. No lie, each and every one was fantastic. My friend got huitlacoche, pollo diablo and hongos and again, all winners (the Diablo was aptly named). And the presentation was beautiful... many pictures were taken The rojo salsa was also fantastic, smoky with adobo flavor and different from anything I have had out. I would like to send a great big thank you to the manager at this restaurant. I was in town for a volleyball tourney and many places were closed. They were open and I wanted to buy some to go food and sit at the bar while I waited. Unfortunately they had no room, except for reservations and for some crazy reason the city has not given them a "standing alcohol permit." The manager went out of the way to make me feel welcome and bought me a beer to thank me for being so understanding. Perfect way I return. But I finally had a guac that is even slightly as good. I Loved the guac at Bakersfield. It was a little salty but very fresh. The tacos were decent. I had a short rib that was flavorful , the shrimp & fish tacos tasted exactly the same. My problem....Somewhere on their menu it should state that the fish & shrimp are cooked together. My husband had a terrible allergic, he can eat shellfish but is allergic to fish. It got ugly and we had to go find Benadryl. All in all it was a good spot for a late night eat. read more
