We love this place! It's so fun to look at their nostalgic candy options from when I was growing up as a kid as well as newer candy that my kids love. The staff is always super patient with kids, adding things to their baskets at check out or removing things. They are always friendly and welcome everyone into the store or say goodbye. Today we took the ferry over to balboa island specifically to get some salt water taffy. Balboa Candy has a very large supply of salt water taffy and they also have a multitude of flavors to choose from. All salt water taffy is peanut free too fyi. So if you have a peanut allergy, you're good. They even have a peanut butter flavored salt water taffy that is completely safe to eat and peanut free. The staff here is super friendly and knowledgeable and we make it a point to stop in on every trip to Newport Beach to show our support for the local business. Prices are reasonable and the selection of candy is vast. There are also some candies that aren't salt water taffy as well as some retro sodas too. I can imagine that this candy store is somewhat reminiscent of days gone by. Give them a try when you're on the island, you won't regret it. Stopped by this candy store while exploring Balboa Island. I love that they had barrels of taffy sitting in the front of the store. It really drew me in. I ended up picking a few pieces of taffy to take home to eat and a pack of blue sour belts since they charge an extra 70 cents if you use card to pay. The taffy from here is really good. The texture is nice and chewy and the flavors are very prominent. I really enjoy the chocolate taffy. As for the sour belt, it is perfect. The blue raspberry flavor really shines through and the belt has the perfect ratio of sweet to sour! Love it here! All of our candy came out to be about $4, which is honestly a steal! read more

So for the record I love this place and I have been a good customer for as long as I can remember. I'm not sure how long this place has been in business but for me it seems like my entire life. I have been to this location and of course across the bay. The Palm Springs location is also a fun place to visit.. For the most part I think they have a very consistent and very good product. I'm not sure where they make their candy, my guess is that they buy it from another company but I'm not 100% sure. It's very important that you look at the taffy before you take a bite because twice now over the past few months I have found a long dark hair wrapped up and through the candy. I'm assuming something like this happens everywhere, I could only imagine how difficult it is to package food but I think it's important that people be on the lookout. I brought this to an employees attention a couple months ago and now here we find another one. I'm sure everyone will live but man it really sucks when you start eating a piece of candy and you find someone else's 9 inch hair wrapped up in your food or candy. Everyone that lives in our house has blonde hair so we know for sure it's not one of us and that makes it even worse. I'm still writing a five star review for this particular location because again I think the product is great and things like this happen but I also think it's important that the managers and owners of this business know what's going on and obviously nothing was done about it the last time I talk to the employee. read more

I don't get to come here often but when I do decide to make a trip out to Newport area, I make sure to drop by. The store is so cute with so many different kinds. It can be a bit overwhelming but that's how a real candy shop should make you feel. I got a few taffy, gosh there are so many flavors it is almost impossible not to get them all to try. This place is fun to stop by as you're walking around balboa. They have every type of candy you can imagine at the store. From sour worms, to taffy (which is my new favorite). We tried the chili mango taffy for the first time today and it was amazing! As soon as you take a bite you can taste the chill and then the mango. One of the most unique Taffy I've ever had. After having dinner across the street, the little could see barrels of candy through the window while walking towards our rental. Being that we flew for hours from Chicago, drive through LA to Newport during rush hour, we decided to cave in and give her a treat. Upon entry I had a flashback and was overcome with nostalgia of my childhood. Barrels of salt water taffy, old school candy and soda. Ok...maybe the soda wasn't old brands, but creme soda and bottled root beer definitely had me thinking of my younger years. As I strolled to the back of the store, there's a wall of Jelly Belly jelly beans and further back were definitely nostalgic candies that is not freely available in today's grocery stores. Walking around Balboa Island today, I wanted to stop in and pick up some taffy. I really only like vanilla, so I grabbed some handfuls and postcards and went about my business. Sadly, when I tasted the taffy, it wasn't up to par, didn't taste like vanilla or sugar! There's nothing laffy about this taffy! They don't make any of their candy there, as far as I could tell. We had some time to kill and Balboa Candy was still open so we went in. For the first time today I decided to purchase some to try, but also, some other chewy candy which I was familiar with. I got a handful and the total was $2.40. I immediately went ahead and unwrapped a taffy and took a small bite. YUCK!!! My husband said maybe it was the flavor, so I tried another one. GROSS! Still the same. I guess I'm just not a salt water taffy person. Even though I am still at the age where I've never come across certain feelings of "those were the good days" or "back in my day," when I stepped through the doors of Balboa Candy, I was instantly hit with a wave of childish wonder and nostalgia. Like many places I end up visiting and falling in love with, I had no idea that Balboa Candy existed until I passed by the shop while looking for parking at Balboa. What made it stand out? "Balboa Candy" in large, old-timey letters in plain sight, and something about it really called out to me. When I entered, my expectations were matched. Big wooden barrels held taffy in so many different flavors. Any candy you could imagine from any time in the last fifty or so years was available. Modern candy and cute knick-knacks were sold there as well. Even though there was no music, the sound of cars calmly whizzing past the shop, for whatever reason, made the experience a bit more authentic and enjoyable. Personally, I am not a candy person, but as an apology for taking so many pictures (the cashier was absolutely fine with it) I ended up getting a couple of taffies that definitely did not disappoint. read more

So upon walking past this store while visiting Balboa Island, I made my friend go in with me as I love salt water taffy and there were a lot of barrels of it I could see from the doorway. My friend and I picked several different flavors and threw them in a shopping basket. He was making faces at some of my more unusual picks like Chile Mango and Cherry Cola I was picking. They had a lot of old school candy like Necco Wafers, Chick-O-Sticks, and Zotz, which are my favorite hard candies that are sweet on the outside and they have sour acid stuff inside. Don't judge. I loved these when I was younger and still like them ;) They have candy by the pound like Jelly Belly jelly beans and gummy candies and a selection of licorice, chocolate, etc. They also had bottled sodas and touristy stuff at the front like Orange County location magnets and postcards. My refrigerator is plastered in magnets and pictures, so I bought a couple of magnets, too. The taffy was ok but didn't seem super fresh. It wasn't hard or anything just didn't taste like it was freshly made. They did have some interesting flavors though. Service was friendly. This is a nice candy store. Pretty typical of what I would think you would find in a busy touristy, beach location. I am sure if you have kids with you, they will love this place. read more

Whenever we're on Balboa Island, the kids love stopping in this candy shop to browse, but truthfully, I hate coming here. It's so expensive, and I don't think there's anything here that's really hard to find. My kids selected gummy bears, and I had to buy one bag a piece. Since it sold by weight, it was pretty expensive for gummy bears, which are essentially solidified fruity sugar water. Salt Water Taffy for days!!! Before leaving for SOCIAL, Tora M., and I popped in here for some salt water taffy goodies (and other assorted candy goodies), yay! An adorable candy shop, the first thing you see are those huge barrels of salt water taffies! I got one of each from a few barrels, and then wandered back to check out the other candies. Surprisingly, they're pretty good, though they do stick to the teeth easily, lol! I got the following flavors: Cherry Cola, Banana Split (My Favorite!), Root Bear Float, Caramel Cheesecake, and Frosted Cupcake (this one tasted like wax, yuck!). I also saw the Chicken and Waffle flavor, but declined to get since I got a lot already (yumminess in moderation, hehe!). We didn't stay too long, but nonetheless, I got my salt water taffies (and some Very Cherry Jelly Beans, and Gummi Cherries) to keep my sweet tooth at bay for a while, yay!!! Cute place for a must see visit! One of the best things about the main street of Balboa is all the cute shops with such a variety of unique places to visit. You can walk into a fresh organic oil shop for cooking, a all natural local honey and dried fruit and nut shop or walk into a candy store filled with all the old school candies from the past. When you first walk in you can treat yourself to a large variety of saltwater taffy and then walk around looking at all the old style candies from Beechnut gum (Licorice!) to Astro pops to wax lips we use to get as candy treats at Halloween. It was a fun store to look around in and it takes you back to memory lane. So many candies to chose from it truly was a candy connoisseur delight! Keep in mind the prices are on the high end.
