I always take the opportunity to enjoy coffee and brunch at Balboa Lily's whenever I'm in the area. There is often ample seating closer to opening, and the service from the team is consistently warm and welcoming. (Be warned, however, as it will get busy.) Dogs are welcome in the outdoor seating! My friends and I, all law students, recently chose Balboa Lily's outdoor seating as our spot to study ahead of finals, and we never felt rushed or pressured to leave. We lingered over our meals, kept the coffee orders coming, and had a genuinely lovely afternoon. Despite being situated on a corner next to two streets, the outdoor seating never felt particularly busy or loud. It struck a great balance between having some energy around you while still being comfortable enough to sit, study, and enjoy a long coffee. Definitely a spot I'll continue coming back to for brunch, coffee, and a good place to settle in for a few hours. read more

Cute little corner cafe in Newport Beach. Came here after whale watching with my husband. I had a salad and he had a turkey burger. The food was definitely good, but I just wished the salad was a little bigger cause I was still hungry after. Their menu is also very pork centric and I can't have pork so that was kind of challenging. But the coffee is excellent! I had the spicy mocha and it was so delicious. We ate here because of the great reviews, the reasonable price, and how it was a two minute walk from our boat. The food selections and drinks were great. A great variety of things to eat and drink. Marcella, green haired monster, did not say good morning to me when I said it and instead, with her back turned to me says, would I like inside or outside seating. Feeling bad that she can't speak to me directly, but with her back to me, I said I want to order coffee. We have been coming to this restaurant for several years, and the food has always been consistent with excellent service -- until this past Saturday. Unfortunately, the experience was very different this time. At 8 a.m., the music playing was heavy metal, which really didn't fit the calm, pleasant atmosphere you'd expect for breakfast on a beautiful holiday weekend in Balboa. When I politely asked our server if the station could be changed or the volume lowered, she told me that no one was able to adjust the Pandora station because it was set "for their morale." She also said she couldn't turn the volume down. By all accounts (especially its own), Balboa Lily's prides itself on its coffees, with a variety of offerings that range from the interesting to the diabetic-inducing. And indeed, my experience with a more standard espresso drink (a cortado) was pretty good. It certainly was not the best I have ever had--or even the best I have had in Orange County--but it was certainly serviceable. Moreover, waitstaff at BL was also quite good. Not only were we waited upon quickly and courteously, but our meals came extremely quickly. On a warm Spring day, with its windows down and exposed to the crisp air, this is a fine space in which to dine. But unfortunately the food itself is less than exemplary. Many of the dishes seem assembled right out of a Sysco inventory. Flavors are OK, but the ingredients do not scream fresh. Indeed, the pre-prepped qualities of the meats are particularly evident (and that may be perhaps why our food appeared with near fast-food speed). It underscores a basic rule of thumb in food preparation, at home or at an eatery: if the quality of the materials used are mediocre, there is only so much cooks can do. In sum, the food is edible, but unremarkable and verging on the utterly forgettable. My sincere advice to the owners of Balboa Lily's is to spend some time and effort really thinking about your menu, and how you source meat and produce. It's a great space and location, but as it stands I certainly wouldn't return. read more

Balboa lily was solid. Service was pretty good overall, and I really appreciated the small touch of them bringing out a water bowl for my dog--definitely pet-friendly, which is a plus. Only downside was the wait. It took about 10 minutes to get our coffee and have the table cleaned, even though no one was sitting there before us. The coffee itself? I'd give it a 4 out of 5--good, but not mind-blowing. Parking's a bit tricky, but there's a paid lot across the street that makes it manageable. We got there right at opening and they were setting up for the day. The person opening was friendly and rung us up for our order of a coffee and a mocha. He told us the person who makes the espresso drinks was running late and did we mind waiting. We had time to kill so no problem on the wait. The person who makes the espresso drink showed up a few minutes later. She came in with a bad attitude to start. She started to make my drink in a cup for the restaurant and I asked her if she would mind making it to go. Apparently this really annoyed her because I got a dirty look and she started banging everything around. When I got the mocha it tasted less than desirable. I promptly threw it in the trash and bought one around the corner. I do not recommend this business. I gave it two stars because the man who greeted us when we arrived was friendly. We were expecting the coffee to be served first, but it was brought at the same time as the food also it wasn't hot and fresh Unfortunately, the coffee mug had a strong fishy smell, also our plates smelled the same which made it impossible for us to eat the food.
