This place is all location and not much else. The view is awesome. The food is mediocre. Not bad by any means, but not great. My biggest complaint is completely personal, but i felt like our table were the only people in there under 50 years old. Everyone there was old. Really old. Fantastic restaurant, with amazing view of the marina. Ryan, our server, was amazing - he made several recommendations and had an awesome attitude, with great service. This is a beautiful spot for brunch, especially for a special occasion. The restaurant is really pretty and has a great view overlooking the Redondo marina. Went here when I was out to LA for a memorial, so my aunt arranged a memorial brunch here. Started with just coffee and grapefruit juice, which were good as was the omelette.. arugula, asparagus, cheddar. The arugula salad was yummy too. Nice atmosphere and location. read more

My galfriend and I took advantage of dineLA restaurant week to try out Baleen and had a really nice night out. Parking is $5 but valet is free. The restaurant is right on the harbor of the pier so it's gorgeous as the sun is setting and you can feel the ocean breeze as you are eating. Our server Sydney took really good care of us and gave us great recs. For the starter, we both got the kale salad, which was amazing and surprisingly filling! The white balsamic vinegar made the salad not too tart and lightly flavored it without being overwhelming. For the entree, I had the miso salmon, which was cooked perfectly. The sweet potato and green beens sides were okay. My friend had the hanger steak, which was a bit dry but had a nice dipping sauce. I liked the papas bravas side since I like mustard. For dessert, Sydney recommended that we both get the bread pudding and it was seriously unbelievably, mind-blowingly good. I think it's because it's topped with butter pecan gelato. All the flavors just meld together perfectly. A perfect ending to an awesome meal! read more

Last of the Redondo Beach waterside restaurants and across from the Portifino Hotel, this little gem is hidden from the commercialized restaurants along the way. Stopped in around 5:00 PM, which HH is from 3-6 PM. A small menu, but worth it. Did get a Ceasar Salad with chicken, which is not on the HH menu, which was delicious. Service was great, Marcos was my bartender and very attentive. It wasn't crowded and the seating areas were so spacious and comfy. I can see how nice this place would be during brunch or on a sunny day. I will be coming back for that. My girlfriend was so happy that we stopped by and enjoyed her Poke taco and calamari. read more

Came here for dineLA for a little dinner celebration with my hubby. We came at 6:45 on a Thursday and the restaurant was pretty loud and raucous. I requested a table by the window but instead we got seated in the middle of two drunk/rambunctious parties. Luckily, I requested to be reseated and we were promptly moved to a better table. Our server was Sydney. She was very friendly and gave us a great experience. For the dineLA menu, we got a starter, entree, and dessert. All were timed perfectly. She also asked us if we wanted bread. I appreciated that the bread did not just show up by default in case you didn't want to be tempted! (Of course we did get the bread, haha, but it's the thought that counts!) We decided to do the wine pairing with our dineLA dishes. All the wines were delicious and truly did complement the individual dish they were served with. I got the kale salad, miso salmon, and chocolate cake. All three were great, but the salad and cake really stood out. My husband got the clam chowder, hangar steak, and bread pudding upon Sydney's recommendation. The portion sizes on everything were perfect. I would definitely come back for happy hour, but beware that there is live music on some nights (not the best live music, either), which can kind of take away from the quiet/intimate atmosphere and make this into more of a party spot. Afterwards, we went on an awesome stroll along the water's edge and enjoyed the views of sea lions and the pelicans and seagulls flying by. We may or may not have been hunting Pokemon. The first time I came here I was really impressed. Came back a second time, post-remodel, and was disappointed. The food and drink is still excellent. But the service is God-awful. Slow, inattentive, often lost-looking wait staff is not a good look. No one seems to care how I thought my meal was, no one asked if we wanted a second cup of coffee, and despite everyone else being offered a water we were not. Little things add up, and in this case they added up to a disappointing second visit. At these prices I expect better service. read more

Came here for lunch with my fiance after a Bridal event at the Portofino Yacht Club. Great place with an awesome view. This is an awesome place to get down with your yuppie self. The lunch selection is good -- just a handful for items. Everything was small portions, and like any fine dining, they pay great attention to the plate -- which were all immaculately placed. I had the seafood linguine -- great medley of all seafood (clams, calamari, mussels, shrimp, and fish). It didn't look much, but I felt immediately full. The tomatoes and herbs were fresh -- not only could I taste them, but I was definitely mesmerized by the aroma as well. My fiance had the fish and chips, and though it sounds simple enough -- the presentation was cute. It was also delicious. The pricing isn't for the frugal -- but if ambiance, service, and view is calculated into the mix -- I guess it's worth it. Cheers! read more

What a fantastic experience! Super cute, cozy ambiance. Went a few weeks ago with a group of 4. The clam chowder is the best I've ever had. It's got bits of bacon, fresh clams, cream, and potato in it. Nice size bowl and I ate it all. The dishes are unique and tasty. Someone ordered a dish that came with a black sticky rice with coconut, which was interesting texture and flavor. The black miso cod is about average, though (I've had better elsewhere). Our night was topped off with strawberries with fresh whipped cream and the bread pudding. Delicious!! The service, ambience, and overall quality of the food is excellent. Great for work dinners or romantic dates. We asked our waitress about the meaning behind the restaurant's logo and she told us, in fairytale fashion, the story of the monkey and the whale. Elegant place next to the water. Went here for their Christmas buffet. They didn't have much of a variety compared to some other holiday buffets I have been to. Their lamb was lovely though, with the apricot jam! Best lamb I have had. Other things they had included prime rib, assortment of cheeses, smoked salmon and capers, roasted chicken, roasted salmon, pork chops with maple glaze, au gratin, steamed veggies, some salads, and pasta made to order (gnocchi or ravioli). Dessert included carrot cake, apple, pecan, and pumpkin pie, and cookies. Unfortunately I didn't have enough room in my stomach to try the pasta, but everything else was decent. I don't think it was worth $59 per person, though. Service was swell. Our waitress was very attentive. The atmosphere was nice, although the people next to us were loud and brought like 10 bottles of wine of their own (no joke). Oh well, it's Christmas, time to be cheery and joyful I suppose! All in all, if I were to come back to LA, I probably wouldn't come back here. Food wasn't memorable enough...but perhaps I didn't have the best representation of the food here since it was a special holiday buffet? read more

I went here for DineLA in 2010 and with two co workers and I was pretty impressed by the food. It is sort of hard to find, you gotta drive way into a parking lot and its by a hotel that over looks the ocean. The inside looks like you're inside a wooden ship. Uses boat planks for the floors and it does overlook the ocean somewhat. I got the hanger steak. The meat was tender and potatoes were pretty whipped up to creamy perfection. For dessert I got the chocolate lava cake with ice cream. I'm not a huge fan of cake but I love all types of ice cream. The dessert didn't wow me. Again this place reduces the stigma I place on the southbay for having bad food. I'd go again! Oh yea so you can also hear otters or seals making noise on the rocks at the ocean when you go outside. LOVED IT! the restaurant is located right in front of the Portofino Hotel and has a great view of the Marina and dock. for appetizers we tried: the calamari, shrimp aijillo - plump shrimp in garlic,tomato and olive oil, and smoked fish dip. Now I wouldn't usually go and order the fish dip but because it was highly recommended, why not. SO glad we did, it was so good! It has smoked salmon and cream cheese.. served with pita bread and top with relish, a very unlikely combination in my mind but on so yummy in my mouth! I ordered the Grilled Pork Chop with mustard potatoes, roasted apple, and maple. I love a good pork chop and this... was a GOOD pork chop. Wonderfully seasoned and the apples and potatoes was a perfect match. My mom's salmon and BF's hanger steak both looked and tasted exceptional too. As if we didn't already stuff our faces, we still ordered dessert. the Bread Pudding with pecan ice cream and candied nuts. YUM. and the Pain Perdu with fresh strawberries and marcarpone. both truly decadent desserts! The only drawback I had was signature cocktail, Baleen. It sounded promising.. vodka with strawberry and blueberry. Maybe it was just that SKYY just doesnt go down smooth.. I was not having it. We thought we'd try the hotel restaurant's breakfast our first morning there. We were greeted by friendly staff and had a nice table by the window with a gorgeous view to a beautiful day.. The place was fairly empty when we arrived. Service was pretty quick. The waitress was friendly. We ordered an omelette, eggs with sausages, kids breakfast (that included a fruit cup), juices for the kids and cappuccino for the adults. The meal was nice but nothing to write home about. The cappuccino was REALLY average. It tasted basically like brewed coffee with foam on top. Plus it costed $5 EACH!!! Woah. The kids juices was only about a few cents cheaper than an adult size juice too! The breakfast was average priced...around $10-11 for adults and $8-9 for kids meals. When the bill came, we were shocked to see that they charged us an extra $6 for the kids fruit cup which was supposed to be included in their meal! Anyway, apparently they were having issues with their credit card machine and it took ages to get everything sorted. The waitress was apologetic but it kinda put a damper on our morning. read more

Came here for DineLA, and it was my first time here. I had the 3-course meal with the wine pairing. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. Service was great even though there was a temporary blackout which affected our payment process. Since the server was so apologetic and offered us more wine, it didn't seem like a big inconvenience. I will definitely come back for happy hour. I might be back sooner than later to try their tapas. The ambiance was romantic but also a great spot to take my girlfriends. We came made reservations for a nice quiet Valentine's Day lunch at the restaurant. When we arrived we were were informed that there Is a private party going on and there were only seats in the very noisy bar. Could they not have called us to inform us of the situation? We could have gone somewhere nicer. Did they not let us know because they knew we would cancel the reservation. It is apparent that they value the buck over their customer's comfort. We've eaten here twice now, and both experiences have been fantastic. The menu has changed considerably since I was there last (the menu on the website is outdated), and the food itself seems to have relaxed, and isn't trying so hard to be initmidatingly artsy. The cioppino is very good, if a little flat, and the short rib is outstanding. The service is excellent, and accomodating (I have dietary issues, and they were ready for me....and they also kindly moved our table when I expressed a concern) Live music in the bar, that filters out to the dining room at a tolerable level. Best part: CIGARS. On. The. Menu. They'll bring it to you trimmed, just take it down to the fire pits downstairs on the water, along with the last of your wine.... perfect finish! read more

I tried out this restaurant through DineLA week and had the most absolutely delicious meal! The service was awesome as well. We made reservations and got a great table with a view of the harbor. We had choices to select from for each of the appetizer, main course, and dessert. The waitress was EXTREMELY helpful in pointing out what tasted good for which palette. For appetizer I went with the seared ahi on watermelon. What a strange yet delicious combination! For the main course I had their miso sake cod. OMG... it's so succulent and tender... a definite must taste if you ever head this way. For dessert we had the lava cake and strawberries with mascarpone - a great way to end an awesome meal! If you're looking for something different, can afford to spend some money, and LOVE seafood, then this is a great spot to check out. read more

I am reviewing the restaurant at dinner, NOT the lounge. The service is very good in the restaurant, especially at dinner, so-so in the lounge. Food is excellent here at dinner. Good ambiance, tables are not jammed-in or crowded. 5 stars. It is expensive, the one negative. An otherwise outstanding restaurant. Breakfast and lunch are served downstairs, and down there it can be quite crowded and busy enough that service does slow down. 4 stars is my vote for these two meal times. read more

From start to finish this place did not disappoint. Amazing views, great wine and fantastic food make for an awesome experience. The pumpkin soup was so flavorful and rich with just a hint of peppers. Their miso cod melted in my mouth like butter. Their garlic spinach was so scrumptious i'd eat it with every meal! Felt kinda weird walking into the lounge area on a Tuesday in only jeans since there were so many "business" people there. Heck - I'm a local, I can dress however I want. We only went to the bar/lounge area for Happy Hour: $5 house Chard and Cabs, well drinks, $3 Coors Light bottles with $5 Caesar salad, clam chowder, fish tacos, BBQ wings, chips and salsa, and a special $2 sliders. The lounge area of the bar is great. Candle lit, lounge chairs, fireplace all lit up. We ordered some drinks and some food off of the Happy Hour menu. The tacos (2) and Caesar salad were good. The chowder came in massive bowls but in reality there was only a cup worth in it. All were very tasty but I feel that the prices were actually overpriced for Happy Hour for what they gave you. But then again, look to see the prices on the regular menu and you may double think. I love the ambiance and that during the week it's a little more upscale but you can relax and still have a conversation. The service was good in the lounge area. The food tasted great. I think it will a little over priced for Happy Hour but given the all of the above I wouldn't be opposed to going back again. read more

Eh. We had a special occasion dinner with family here. I had high expectations for this restaurant, and maybe I am picky, but I thought the food was mediocre and the prices were not justifiable. Our reservation was not put in correctly so we had to wait a while for our table to be reset. The backlit menus were the most impressive part of the experience. Appetizers: Half dozen oysters tasted fresh, and bruschetta was quite good with crispy bread and savory topping. The crab cake, however was bland and unmemorable. Main course: I love seared tuna, and when I saw it on the menu, I had to order it. But it was a very strange dish consisting of very salty tuna and sweet coconut rice. I think my taste buds were very confused... salty, sweet, salty, sweet. There was some very thick, teriyaki like sauce drizzled on it, and the wasabi was not spicy at all. I'm confused because the rest of my group seemed to like their food. I tasted a piece of mahi mahi, and it was drenched in and dripping with oil. It was not for me. The service was very attentive and we enjoyed our wine. For the price tag of about $65 per person (with wine, tax and tip), I would expect at least a decent meal. I doubt that I will go back to Baleen. If I was the kind of person who likes to have a cocktail while looking at some houseboats, maybe. I rate this place 2.5 stars, but I round up to 3 stars. read more

Heard the manager tell someone to ask a hotel guest call back in 30 minutes. They can do room device right now. But the restaurant's half empty. I went here the night of April 3rd while there was live music for some drinks and was pretty satisfied. The booths outside with the gas fireplaces are awesome. The prices seemed fairly reasonable given the marina location and the atmosphere they've created. It was a bit awkward ordering drinks from the bar (the bartender area is lower than the area in front, so you're literally looking down on them), and none of the waitstaff really ventured to our booth outside. The bartenders provided decent service, though I wasn't too impressed with the servers-- they didn't seem too friendly, but you never know how management is treating them. read more
