I would call this place Southeast Asian light. It definitely has Indonesian specialties like Rijsttafel and Beef Rendang, but it also caters to Miami tastes for general Asian fare like Egg Rolls and Shrimp Shumai (which I'm positive people in Indonesia enjoy). Whatever it takes to make it in this town, right? I had a Miami book fair event at the college and was happy to pop in and out on 30 minutes with a satisfying meal of deliciously complex beef rendang. For the uninitiated, it's tender beef chunks seasoned with coconut and citrus with a slightly spicy kick. I'm grateful this place exists and it offers something different when it's easy to be drowned out by the more facile run-of-the-mill Chinese and Japanese joints. Also it came with a big ginger sesame salad which made me feel less guilty about the rich beef meal. To top off the evening I was serenaded by a dancing Santa figurine jamming to jingle bells. AMAZING! This was my first experience with Balinese food and it did not disappoint. This is a small spot with a lot of character. Everyone there was so helpful and nice. The dishes include a salad which was filled with fruit and greens and some other delicious things... it was unique and colorful and even more flavorful.. Hands down one of the best Indonesian restaurants I've been to outside Indonesia. So. Much. Flavor. Some dishes weren't that great but the amazingness of the majority trumps everything else and keeps Bali Cafe at 5 stars for me. First and foremost, let's talk about the Rendang Sapi. Tender beef with the blend of coconut milk and a million aromatic spices that constitute the sauce...this was the MVP in my books. A close runner up to the Rendang is the Soto Betawi. Secondly, the peanut sauce and sambal (Indonesian chili sauce/paste) are out of this world. The peanut sauce is perfectly nutty and creamy and incredible. It comes on the Lumpia (and I imagine the Chicken Satay) and you can request it on the side as well. The sambal is also soooooo good, especially if you like spicy and shrimp paste. Once you start adding it to stuff, you'll want to add it to everything and take home a few bottles of it (unfortunately not an option). Mixing up the peanut sauce and sambal makes a winning dip for the krupuk (shrimp crackers). Nasi Rames was another dish I'd order again. It's rice accompanied by a variety of sides, notably the rendang, perkedel kentang (potato pancake), and teri kacang (fried peanuts with little fried anchovies). Dishes I wasn't excited about: Ayam Bumbu Kecap, Nasi Goreng Spesial (except for the rendang it comes with), and the kare ayam (curried chicken) that came with the Nasi Rames and Nasi Goreng Spesial. Other minor disappointments: they were out of Chicken Satay both times I've been here and they were out of krupuk the second time I went. For drinks, I got the Soda Gembira and it was delightful. It's a mix of condensed milk, cocopandan syrup, and club soda. I'm also heavily biased towards the Teh Kotak iced Jasmine tea on account of growing up with it. I've also tried the Es Cincau and it was nice but nothing special. It's not the milky drink I expected, just really sweet cocopandan water with grass jelly. If the food wasn't enough, Bali Cafe has nice decor and friendly staff. Definitely coming back whenever I'm in South Florida! read more

Where is the Zero Star? The service was horrendous. It was the worst service I have had in a very long time in a restaurant. I understand it is a small place and there is currently a shortage of servers, but we had to tell our server (or should I say the only server) 6-7 times we were ready to order, plus I had to get up and stand on his way to finally get him to take our order. If he was going crazy with a ton of orders all he had to do is tell us he needed 5 mins. But, he just kept saying yes and then ignore us for 10 mins. Went there for a meal with my wife- they are cash only so we had to scramble to find an ATM which was a huge inconvenience. When we got our food which was nothing to write home about- our waiter who never smiled at us or even asked for a refill became irate and demanded a tip when we were about to give him one...we were taken aback by the hostile and inhospitable demeanor shown to us. I've really missed Indonesian food!! This place is my first stop in Miami. We came here for the easter break!! I came with 3 other Indonesians. we started with shrimp siomay for the appetizer. It was decent, The sauce was tastier than the one in indo(it was good tho). I ordered nasi goreng (fried rice); it was served with opor ayam and rendang beef!! So yummy!! I really enjoyed the beef and ayam, but the rice was not like the real indonesian fried rice, it was a lil bit tasteless. The Mie ayam Jakarta (Noodle with chicken) was the same as the one in Indo!! How did I miss Bali Café for so long? Needing a spot to grab dinner before a show at the AAA, this came up in a Yelp search and decided to try it out. A couple notes: 1) CASH ONLY. It's plastered across all the windows so there's really no way to miss it. This is just a reminder. 2) No alcohol. Not saying you need to drink to have a good time but, ya know, just don't expect to find wine/beer here. I had some jasmine green tea. 3) You're in the heart of downtown so parking may be difficult to come by. There are a couple of city garages nearby where you can find affordable parking. Now, for the FOOD! Since it was our first time, my friend and I split the rijsttafel which was an amazing deal for about $20 each. To start, we each got a miso soup, lumpia which is kind of like an egg roll, shrimp shumai and salad. Now, this salad wasn't just any ol' salad. It was packed with lettuce, oranges, cheese, sesame seeds, cucumber, beets and some more fun things. We could barely finish it and we knew the main course was coming... Must be careful! The main consists of five servings of specialities: rendang, sambal goreng teri kacang, opor ayam, capcai, ikan goreng pesmol. In plain words? Fish in curry, chicken in curry, steamed vegetables, peanut salad, and my favorite which was the beef stewed in excellent spices. We also got some steamed rice on the side. I seriously loved it ALL. We couldn't finish it all and took it to go. I believe the price includes dessert but we had to run to the show so skipped out on that part. Seriously I was surprised that I haven't written a review on this place, as I've been coming here way before I becam a Yelper. The food here is beyond delicious, always perfectly flavored and nicely presented!! Over the years I've tried most of their Indonesian dishes (sorry I haven't looked much at the sushi menu, because this is about the only Indonesian place in Miami!) and here's what I recommend: We almost always get one of their signature specials, which has rice plus a couple of meat dishes, along with some veggies and prawn crackers. Nasi Goreng Special is a good choice. Soto Betawi is another favorite of mine. In a nutshell it's chunks of stewed beef with cubes of tomato and potatoes. Sounds familiar? The spices though, makes it a totally another animal. It's in a milky broth with some lemongrass, ginger, shallot and other seasoning. Their BBQ eel is delicious too. Somewhat similar to the Japanese unadon, with a generous piece of tender, melt-in-your-mouth fish, and some not-so-Japanese pickles. I love most of the dishes, except for a few that I don't care too much for: steamed rice patties - Kind of taste like bland sushi rice that is cooked with too much water and then squeezed too tightly. Laksa - I usually love laksa noodle but recently they changed to thin rice vermicelli, and I just don't like it as much as the thicker noodles. Flavor is nice though. For $18 you can have a meal fit for a king. Oh yes, I'm referring to the Rinsttafel feast! A few favorites within the feast: - The Asian Salad is out of this world. There are a ton of ingredients that shouldn't work together, but they do! We're talking strawberries and seaweed, people. Trust me- it WORKS! - Anchovy peanuts. Again- Huh?! Again- Mmm! They were sweet and also a bit tangy. I'm not sure how they related to anchovies but either way they were a hit and added a different texture. - The fish dish was all of our favorite of the spread. So we walked in for a late lunch on a Saturday around 3:15 pm.... so I asked if it was okay since they close by 4 pm ... the gentleman immediately said no problem so we were very happy and took a seat :) needless to say the service continue to be superb throughout the entire lunch He gave us recommendations on the menu since it was our first time eating Indonesian cuisine so we followed his lead and it was great He was very attentive and polite. The flavors in this dish were explosive. The beef was tender and juicy. The rice was very tasty. The salad that comes with this dish was very refreshing, light, and fresh. It had lettuce, carrots, onions, pineapples, tomatoes and a delicious light sesame dressing. The dressing was similar to a vinaigrette but a bit sweeter. I saw in the menu that they make this salad with chicken on top. So, this salad will be a good dish for the diet that I am always planning on doing... Laksa - shrimp (not fried), tofu, veggies, noodles and and egg in an amazing curry soup. It also comes with chips so i dunk them in the soup yum! OK so they have spicy sauces on the table that you can add to your dish (one red/ one green) I tried the red hot sauce. It was hoooot so I mixed some in my soup and...boom! Perfect!! I ate it all and the portions are large so no diet yet. Can't blame a girl for enjoying good food. I washed it down with a nice jasmine iced tea, which by the way had refills.
