I don't typically write yelp reviews but I feel the need to share my experience at this place today. I came by to order food to go during lunch time. I was skeptical when the server took my order without writing it down. I paid and said I'd come back to pick it up since it was going to take 15-30 min. When my husband and I came back after 30 min, the server told us she FORGOT one of the four items we ordered so she didn't make it yet. Very unprofessional. Let's talk about the food. I'm indonesian who grew up here in the US and even I know this is not good Indonesian food. The beef dish that they call rendang is NOT rendang. It doesn't even have the taste of rendang. We also ordered ayam sambal sereh which came with two sad overcooked chicken breasts. The topping had lemongrass in it, which made it somewhat interesting but it was not pleasant to eat the overcooked chicken. What's ironic is that this was the order that they forgot and had to make last minute. I would not recommend this place to anyone interested in trying Indonesian food. The service was good and pretty fast. - Indonesian fried chicken: good. The chicken meat was tender and we could taste the spices of marinade in the meat. I wish that they cooked the meat a bit longer so it had crispy skin. - Chicken satay: good. The meat was tender and flavorful. The peanut sauce was good but I wish that it had chunks of peanut. - Lontong sayur: very good. The soup was creamy and flavorful. - Es cendol: good and perfect for a hot day! I love this place. I've been coming here ever since it was called the Indo-cafe. A couple from Sweden of all places, was visiting, and I offered to take them out to dinner. They were staying at the Holiday Inn downtown, and I asked what kind of food they would like. His partner is from Indonesia, and said that it's hard to find good Indonesian food in Sweden. Well, this place is right around the corner. I told them, it's not fancy, but it is good. We meet up, and the lady that ran the restaurant was very friendly. She immediately started chatting. With the lady in my group in Indonesian. Right now, the indoor dining is closed, I don't know if it's going to be coming back, so we just had dinner on the patio. We shared an order of the lumpia, the chicken satay, and they had the Nasi goreng. (Fried Rice.). I ordered the. Cap cay, which was basically chicken with veggies. Everything was very good. The lumpia were delicious, and they were not greasy, On the satay, the chicken was delicious, and the peanut sauce was savory. They definitely liked their fried rice. My dish was also very flavorful, the veggies were just the right texture, and the chicken was very good. I asked my female guest if the food was authentic, and she said yes, it was very good. I've seen this place for years and I've finally tried it. And let me tell you they were so good! We ordered the lumpia, fried rice with pork, and fried noodles with chicken. Lumpia was delicious, hubby devoured them. The fried rice was so flavorful with a hint of sweetness. Came with a fried egg too on top. The fried rice I think was my favorite. Big chunks of bbq pork was a win! The lady at the door was sweet and gave her recommendations for my first time there. No seating inside, just outdoor seating. Not sure if that's a permanent thing or not. The place looked small with some small tables inside. However, there are plenty of tables outside or take your food to go. Haven't been back here in probably a decade but it's really great to see they are still open!! They had a different name before but the same humble delicious food. Think home cooked food, served straight to you in paper plates. They don't have indoor dining but you can grab a table outside, and most are covered in case it's either raining or too hot. The chicken noodle soup was so comforting on a cold evening! But my favorite was still the beef nasi goreng. Tender beef and just really solid flavor in the rice! Even my kids liked it. The ground beef pastry was okay but a bit dry for me, so I'd skip that, but the lumpia/egg rolls were nice and crispy. I visited yeeeears ago and remember enjoying the food. But on our recent trip, we weren't that impressed. It felt like this was closer to Chinese food (and I think the sign actually did say Chinese fusion), just a little better because it's not super saucy. We had the beef nasi goreng (fried rice) and it was fine, nothing special. Bakmi goreng (fried noodle) was more like a chow mein. The chicken in both the bakmi goreng and satay tasted pre-cooked and lacked flavor. The best thing we ate was the mango sticky rice... mMmMmm good! It seems like it's just the (lovely, super sweet) owner taking orders, making food, and serving customers: so definitely a lean team but she definitely makes it work -- and the food is so good !!! We had a little bit of everything, including dessert and drink, and everything we had was soooooo flavorful. I ordered for myself the Gado Gado and Mango Sticky Rice. The Gado Gado had an amazing sauce and the shrimp chips were delicious and so crispy -- refreshing on a hot day! The mango sticky rice was SOOOO GOOD: the mango was fresh and the rice was saturated with coconut milk :-) Cendol was also awesome, I loved the creamy flavor and the pandan jellies. Also try the indonesian chicken because the flavor cut deep into the chicken and it was sooo juicy. My fiancé and I came to eat here again after just visiting Bali a month ago. We missed the Bali food and thought we should come and visit Tessa again. I felt like the food this time around was better than the last, which we came like 6-8 months ago, that time the food was a little more bland than this round. I genuinely Tessa found her joy in cooking again which I'm super happy for since she lost her husband a couple years ago. And I think based on the Yelp reviews the past 1-2 years it has been different than it was prior. I came with expectations of a great hole in the wall place to eat and was met with disappointment. I ordered chicken satay. Something really hard to mess up. But I what I got was lukewarm precooked chicken pieces with mystery sauce. I would have expect peanut sauce to have some peanuts in it, but there were none. My friend ordered the chow mein. And what he got was subpar also with precooked chicken. I would not recommend this place. It's definitely overpriced for what you get. read more

After passing by Bali Kitchen in Old Sac at least 100 times, I decided to try it while out walking the day after Christmas. It was a cold and foggy Monday - a great day to try one of their soups, I thought! So I ordered the Bumbu Bali, a chicken soup I'd never eaten before. Actually, I don't think I've EVER tried Indonesian food, let alone Balinese cuisine (except, maybe a handful of times, Indomie noodle plates from a food truck in Stockton - of which I can no longer recall the name). The Bumbu Bali was delicious, more like a hearty chicken stew, with tender chunks of chicken bathing in a delectable savory broth accompanied by bell pepper and onion. It came with a generous side of rice, which soaked up the broth perfectly. It was so filling that I couldn't even finish! I'll definitely be making a point to visit Bali Kitchen again soon, as their menu is fairly extensive for such an unassuming little spot on Front Street in Old Sac. It definitely taste like the Indonesian food back in San Jose and couldn't have asked for anything better! Hidden gem located in old Sacramento! This seems to be a mom and pop shop and we love supporting local businesses! Who would ever have expected to find an Indonesian restaurant in this touristy district with otherwise boring American cuisine options? Everything here was prepared to order and served on paper plates, and you could eat at one of the many wooden benches and tables on the porch outside. We started with the mango salad, a sweet combination of shredded mango, jicama, and carrots. The Gado Gado was an Indonesian salad made of cooked bean sprouts, potatoes, green beans, cucumbers, and tofu, all topped with a creamy, earthy peanut sauce and served with a boiled egg and shrimp chips. For our hot dishes, the Lamb Satay were grilled lamb skewers topped with a savory sauce and served with cucumbers, tomatoes, and steamed rice; and the Bakmi Goreng were noodles stir-fried with chicken and mixed vegetables including bok choy, cabbage, onion, celery, and carrots. The noodles went especially nicely with the super spicy ghost pepper hot sauce that came on the side. Long story short, we stopped by here despite seeing the less than stellar reviews. I'm usually leery of eating near tourist areas and an Indonesian restaurant with a very generic name at Old Sac Waterfront already me hesitant without taking into account any reviews. We came here on a weekend and there was a good handful of people dining at the place. It's pretty casual - outdoor bench seating only and you walk up to the "counter" (it's really the door to the shop with a table set up) to order. It was busy, but not crazy busy, but we were told by woman there (possibly the owner), that there would be a 20 to 25 minute wait just to place our order. Rather unusual and I could not tell if they were short on staff or if she was flying solo, but I think she disappeared into the kitchen to cook. We opted to wait and got our orders in some time later. The wait for the food itself wasn't terrible, but I'm estimating it was about 40 to 45 minutes total from when we first wanted to order to getting our food. For some context, we had folks from Indonesia in our group (plus non-Indonesians) and we all ordered different entrees ranging from fried rice, noodles, and curry. All of us weren't impressed by the food for various reasons. I had the kwetiau (kind of like chow fun) with beef. It was very average, but there was a lot of vegetables (ie cabbage) piled on to where I almost felt like I was eating salad at times. There wasn't a ton of noodle which is my favorite part. My only positive takeaway is that it tasted really healthy, but I was still hungry afterwards as it wasn't a very satisfying meal. In collecting feedback from the others and my own observation: The Thai curry was bland, watery, and also had a lot of filler vegetables piled in. Another noodle dish (this is normally dry and stir fried like a chow mein) was very wet like the noodles were only boiled and not fully drained before serving. The fried rice was OK, but there was some negative feedback which I can't recall - it was possibly a tad too salty. Adding fuel to the meh experience is that I was overcharged. I could not see the itemized charges and I missed/skipped the option on the machine to get a receipt. I was wondering how 2 dishes came up to roughly $40 before tip, but soon got the automated email receipt to check. The Thai Curry was listed as $15, but we were charged $17. The beef kwetiau had no price posted, so I won't say I was overcharged, but that thing cost $20. It didn't seem to be any more special than other plates which mostly had menu prices of $15/$16. How was this twenty bucks? I later regretted adding a tip for a self service restaurant that doesn't have their prices correct and I felt a little taken advantage of for the items that didn't have a price listed. My fault for not confirming. I also felt the dishes were loaded with cheap veggies like cabbage to make the portion appear decent - all of this just made the experience distasteful, no pun intended. If you want a bottled water (might have been Costco Kirkland), that's $3. While I love supporting mom and pop shops, this was a disappointing experience. As a loyal returning customer since the Indio Cafe/Bali Kitchen opened, I'm sorry to say after my experience today, I won't be returning until things have radically improved back to the original approach to quality, freshness, value and customer service. Obviously it has changed management again to owners that don't care about the dining experience that they offer. I was looking forward to treating my Mom on Mother's Day with a family favorite of Nasi Goreng and some satay. The chicken and pork were indeed precooked, frozen and reheated in the microwave as other reviews have indicated. The rice was clumpy, undercooked, poorly seasoned and tasteless. The vegetables were scant. They are also charging $1.50 for a small half full condiment cup of sambal for two orders and two appetizers. The service is awful and the prices are no longer congruent with the lack of quality being provided. I can't imagine with this decline, that they are gaining repeat customers or maintaining the loyal following of the local Dutch community as they have always had previously. It may be located in the local tourist area, but the quality, honor and integrity of the management and return business are what is important to maintain any restaurant as a going concern. I had been craving fried rice specifically from Bali Kitchen for a while, and took advantage of the fact that I was in Old Sac this weekend to order some. I was trying to plan ahead by calling to place an order over the phone, but it took me three tries to finally get through to someone. After placing my order, I was told it would be approximately a 25 minute wait. After the 25 minutes, I headed over to Bali Kitchen and waited at the door/window. It was here that I encountered my biggest frustration. I'm not sure if the lady in front of me was a customer and/or a friend, but she was having a friendly conversation with the employee at the counter for a solid 10 minutes while I waited behind her. I tried multiple times to make eye contact with the employee and wave to get some acknowledgement. Finally, the employee interrupted her friend/customer to ask if I wanted to place an order. I let her know that I was here to pick up my phone order, and she immediately knew that it was the fried rice. She swapped places with a younger guy, who handed me my order and processed the payment. I was a little surprised at the lightness of the box when it was handed to me; the portion is definitely on the smaller side considering the price ($12). The flavors were good, but unfortunately with the price to portion ratio and the poor customer service, I was pretty disappointed with this visit. Cruising around Old Sac and saw this in their little food area. Having been to Bali and loving their cuisine, just had to check it out. The verdict, cheap paper plates and styrofoam bowls aside, the food is legit! Great flavor, piping hot, and friendly people. What more could you want? Laksa (5): This was one of my favorite dishes in Bali. They captured the creaminess and spice pretty well. The chicken they used could have been a little more tender, but overall, a solid attempt that I don't think you'll find anywhere else locally. Nasi Goreng (5): Another fantastic dish straight from the motherland. I seriously ate this like everyday in Bali and this was pretty decent as well. Great flavor and the egg was just the icing on the cake. Lumpia (5): Can't go wrong with these. Not sure how 'balinese' these are, but they were tasty. Crispy, not soggy. Good size. Bomb stir-fry noodle dishes here! The bakmi goreng dish was terrific! Chewy egg noodles, tossed together with a lavish amount of bite sized juicy chicken pieces. Beef and pork are also available options with this dish. Also had in it bok choy and cabbage. Sprinkled on top were fried yellow onions and fresh green onions. Seasoning had mellow but good flavor to it. Dish had a great combination of textures and highly addictive. The shrimp kwetiau goreng is with flat rice noodles, tossed with large juicy shrimp. They don't skip on the meat here. Seasoning, veggie ingredients and flavor profile seems to be same between both dishes. I felt the rice noodle could have been more charred to give it a little more oomph! Nevertheless, still an excellent dish! The menu offers a good variety of savory and sweet, and drinks with optional boba. There's only one person working here on a Thursday late afternoon, who seems to be the owner. Very friendly lady. She took our order, we paid and she went to the back to cook. As other customers walked up, they were wondering when she would be back. I would compare this to a one man operating food stand, except she has a store front. No entry. The store itself is her storage and kitchen, so order at the door counter, and there's outdoor informal seating. Restrooms are right across the restaurant. 7/30/2020: Okay, okay~Insistent Tiana wanted taking photos of Sacramento's Chinatown which in fact, is literally NOT A TYPICAL CHINATOWN and a waste of my time discovering Chinatown's ONLY restaurant was closed due to COVID19! Okay~So-do you want to eat there or there or there, Tiana? Tiana explores the restaurants and decides she wants to eat at Bali's Kitchen. Okay-Fine~Let's eat here. I informed Tiana the owner is originally from Bali which Tiana immediately scoffed stating that Bali's Kitchen was just a gimmicky name. REALLY? As IF you know EVERYTHING, Tiana! We order our meals from a beautifully gracious, warm, friendly female: The female informed Tiana our meals will take about twenty to thirty minutes because she is cooking our meals from scratch and everything was freshly caught. Tiana questioned the female where she learned how to cook-the female replied, "I was born in Bali and I'm THE OWNER OF BALI's KITCHEN!" WELP~I guess that undoubtably shut Tiana about the gimmicky restaurant name: Typical BH personality! I just began glaring at Tiana while Tiana began ignoring me and refrained looking at me directly. Service has always been the same nice lady. She's probably the owner and all in one service and chef. The lumpia is a must! I get it each time as well as a Thai tea. I've had their curry fried rice and it was delicious. Today I got the wonton soup due to the weather being rainy and was just what I was craving. It's light but flavorful and the veggies amd wontons are cooked perfectly. Definitely my new favorite wonton soup for sure! read more
