I purchased five Outdoor Cedar Woods Wreaths from Balsam Hill, and three of them stopped working after just one holiday season. For the price, I expected far better durability and support. Instead, Balsam Hill offered nothing but "troubleshooting," which felt insulting given the obvious product failure. Trying to resolve the issue was exhausting. I spoke with three separate online chat reps. Two simply stopped responding, and the third told me they couldn't help because the wreaths were past the 30-day warranty. My first phone call ended with a promise that "the back office" would review my case and get back to me, but no one ever followed up. When I finally spoke with a supervisor, they just repeated the 30-day warranty policy and refused to offer any meaningful assistance. For a company that advertises premium quality, both the product and the customer service were a letdown. I won't be purchasing from Balsam Hill again. read more

December 6, 2025 and after spend way to much time looking at artificial trees, it was time to expand the search distance... The warehouse was relatively easy to locate, but look closely for the correct driveway. There is lots of parking, and enough room for full-size, long-bed, extended cab pickups too. There were so many trees to choose from...many types, styles, heights, and lighting styles/types too. We were glad to go in person to see all the choices (think of walking through their website). And that was just the new trees, not the returned and open-box items that have discounted prices (but no real warranty). There were also wreaths, garlands, ornaments, and lights too. All the staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and worked together as a team. There was no pressure! And just when we thought we'd all the displayed trees, more came out of the back and into the discount section. Sure enough a white tree with small LED lights with concealed white wiring was brought out from the back. It tuned out to a collaboration between Balsam Hill and Treetopia and is 1 of 1 produced. Apparently once the cost of production was calculated, it was determined not to be feasible to produce. Keep in mind it was in the discount section and was steeply discounted. Once it was plugged in, it illuminated in a light shade of blue (what a great contrast!). This tree did not have a rectangular box anywhere along the power cord, thus it was believed the lights did not change color or have other lighting modes. It also did not respond to several of the universal remotes. We bought it (no cash accepted) and it was taken away to be put in a large carry/storage bag. We went to the outside pick up door, loaded the large red bag into the back of the truck, and off we went... Once home, we opened the bag, located a remote, put the tree together, and what a surprise - the LEDs change color and there are many lighting modes too! read more

I had never heard of this place until after seeing their sign along 101, and then a post on Facebook. They are located in Burlingame near the Millbrae Ave exit off of 101. Very easy to find. It's a large warehouse showroom with Christmas things. The first thing I noticed walking in was the Christmassy scent in the air. It smelled really nice. They sell several different fragrances if you want it at home. The next thing you notice are numerous Christmas trees lined up in front by the front door. We were greeted by someone who explained that these trees closest to us were display only. He told us we can look at them and touch them. however we could not take one home today if we find one we liked ; we would have to order any trees we wanted to purchase. The trees looked nice and you can choose between clear light or color lights. But I thought they were on the expensive side. Then he pointed to another set of trees at the far end and told us that those were discounted "floor models" that could be purchased and taken home same day. Besides trees, you will find lots of other Christmassy things, including tree skirts, tree toppers, wreaths, indoor decorations, stocking holders, and ornaments. We have a Christmas tree which was an excellent value and looks great. It's outside warranty now and (knock wood) I'm hoping it holds up to annual use and storage. BUT - I bought some snowman solar path lanterns last year. Within no time the paint had washed off their faces. One snowman came apart and his hat (by which he hangs from a metal shepherd's hook) separated from the glass globe. The globe hit the deck and by some miracle didn't break. I sent emails to customer service twice as they were within warranty, with no response. Because there wasn't any help, at the end of season, I bought gorilla glue and reattached the one hat to its globe head. I bought glass paint and re-did the faces on both. They looked spiffy again. We stored them for the year and put them out yesterday. In case the glue didn't hold, I purposely positioned the lantern over a bush so that if the glass took a header again, it would have a soft landing. Unfortunately my plan didn't work and this morning I found the glass shattered at the base of the stand. I can't help but feel that lackluster customer service should have replaced this initially and I'm really disappointed. This was not a great value for the money. It was an expensive Balsam Hill decoration that I thought would have better quality control and certainly better service. I won't make the mistake again. EDIT (one day later): The other snowman fell apart last night. Balsam Hill, DON'T make outdoor decorations that can't take the out of doors. I just stopped into the outlet to pick up a bolt replacement bulb for my tree and they said they don't carry those which I was shocked since I bought the tree there. That would really upset me was I was buying a few ornaments handed the lady cash and she said no cash and I said why no cash and another lady said that it's because of Covid and nobody wants to touch cash anymore and then a young man came up and said oh they're not gonna be taking cash anymore cause cash is going away and I said really I haven't heard that cash is going away and he said well it is I said OK and he explained to me there's businesses that won't even give change anymore. I find this absolutely ridiculous and I know of a lot of people that also do maybe that eventually it'll go to electronic but for now I believe cash should be accepted because it is a US standard in paying for items unless something's changed that I don't know about I thought that cash equals payment. I'm very upset and very dissatisfied and haven't been more humiliated at any business than I was today. It's one thing for a business to say no cash it's another thing for two other sales associates to chime in and try to tell me there's no cash anymore anywhere I guess maybe this is the reason a lot of retail stores are going out no respect for clients and customers. I drove all the way to Burlingame and I waited for 1 hour and 20 minutes for them as they said they have 12 new trees in the back of the store. I made the mistake of not opening the box right there and then to verify it works and trusted them. I came home to put up the tree day after thanksgiving, and I find a badly used old tree with a broken wire. I have been calling the outlet, the main service center. No one picks up. Hopefully people can see this and avoid this experience or at least not trust them blindly like I did. read more

We purrchased A Tree 3 years ago, when we got it out this year, half the lights didn't work. I called the 800 number and talked to the rep. We tried troubleshooting but soon realized that wasn't working. Thankfully the warranty was in effect until the End of the month. They sent a replacement tree out, it arrived in 2 days. After reading the reviews I was a little nervous to say the least. I'm glad I made the trip anyways, after checking almost every store in the area this place saved us. We needed a 84" tree skirt. I was shocked how hard it was to find one in a store. I was surprised to find the large selection they had, I was able to find a neutral color one that worked perfectly for us. We were in the market for a new tree as we moved into our first single family home. So we had a bunch of places to start looking for a 9 ft. tree and after just stopping by the Balsam Hill Outlet, we bought a tree and saved a bunch of time. L O C A T I O N Balsam Hill Outlet Store is located in Burlingame basically beside the freeway. You can actually see it from the freeway in a nondescript warehouse. There's a small little parking lot for parking and there was plenty when we went. I N S I D E Basically this is a warehouse. So only a small portion of it has sellable items. All the trees are categorized by height, BUT if there's a tree you like in the other height, they might have it in the back as they don't show every tree on the showroom floor. They have trees as you would expect, but they also have garlands, tree toppers, and overall other decor. So the trees they have here are supremely discounted as they are basically open box items. Some of them have been used on tv shows, Hallmark movies, malls, etc. So you're getting a used item but the thought of it in a Hallmark Christmas movie is quite a dream. If the item you want is not on the showroom floor, you can order there online (not at the price on the floor though at the online price), and they'll discount the price online by 5% since you did show up to the outlet. That's a score! That means you get a completely new tree at an additional 5% discount plus the 3 year warranty and they ship free. All the trees in the outlet do not have a warranty, and you only have 3 days to change your mind to return, but hey you're not going to need to do that. We ended up getting a Silverado Slim with clear led lights. It takes them about 20 minutes or so to grab one from the back and ensure that it works and strung up with the lights. We just waited for our name to be called. Beware though, if you want a large tree...um...don't go in a coupe. Ha! We ended up asking them to put it all in the duffle bags instead of the boxes and we barely got it fit into the car. All in all we got ours for ~$500 which isn't too shabby for that kind of tree with led lights and 9ft! O V E R A L L I love the look and quality of the trees. They are above and beyond what you see at Walmart, Michaels, Target, etc. It's just night and day folks. We're in complete love of our Silverado Slim tree and couldn't have made a better choice. $800 for a discounted tree and the some of the light strings do not work anymore. Sent for another section once before and now the lights fail again. Could not be fixed with fuse replacement. Called again - out of warranty period. This tree was stored safely in its bag and not moved around at all. Just a word or two of advice - Had I known that there would be this many issues with an expensive tree, I would have bought one from the big box stores for way less than this one cost. This location is showing closed, but they still process orders, so I'm doing a review. It took me 3 years to find this advent piece in stock, so I'm happy I finally got it. It was frustrating as they stated they'd let you know when an item was in stock, but I never received notifications for that. I went online one day and it read it would be in stock in 2-10 days, so I just kept checking a few times every day. I was at work on break and saw it was in stock, but forgot my wallet. I then forgot to order it when I got home. I remembered the next day and went to order thinking it would be gone. 97 people had purchased it that day, but it was still available, so I ordered it. But I never received that promised email stating it was back in stock, so I'm glad I checking up on it on my own. Now to the product. I'm still glad I got it, but it is NOT worth $279. While it is sturdy, it is made out of the same type of material like those dinosaur kits you'd buy in school. You know where you punch out the pieces and put it together. Also, I think if you're spending $279 on something made of this material, they would take more care when glueing to make sure stuff was straight. The trees are bent and permanently attached as you can see in the pic. It is very nice looking though, and all the lights appear to light up though, so it's all good. I have always drives past this place but never went inside until the other day. I felt like I was a kid in a candy store. They had so many beautiful items to look at if you just want to get a Christmas feel come on in you will right away. This is a warehouse so it does have the warehouse feel but if your like me I love walking into warehouses full of items. I always feel like I'm in an adventure. We did not purchase any items we just stopped in to see what this place was all about. We saw some real pretty Christmas trees they say they are open boxed items that may have been a return our used as a tree in a HALLMARK movie come on that right there had me sold. The trees are always so pretty in any Hallmark / lifetime movie. We have not had a tree up in years since all my children are grown adults and our place is too small but we are moving soon so next year a tree will be out out and decorated and this will be the first place I search for our forever tree in our forever home read more

Jonathan and his team were completely useless with the information and help they provided. Highly recommend any other product over this one from this store. We bought a tree a while back and needed some help fixing the lights since a strip entirely doesn't work. We were happy to pay for it. But Jonathan just said "No we don't do that. And no we don't have any partners who can help." First of all, the phone number itself offers "press 3 for service or repairs". So very obviously they do offer repairs. Second, we're happy to pay for it -- a good reason might be they're busy, they don't take on customers outside the warranty or literally anything else other than, "no, we can't help you". We bought a 9 foot tree in November 2019. Our previous tree was a Costco tree and it lasted 15 years before the first strand of lights went out. We decided to splurge on a "upgrade" and went with balsam Hill. When we assembled the tree for the first time, one of the strands didn't light so my husband systematically went through every bulb in that strand until he found the culprit. He replaced it and that solved the problem. That was Christmas 2019. One year later, we assembled the tree again but this time two of the strands didn't light so my husband spent four hours going through every single bulb until he found the problem and fixed it. We decorated the tree and then those strands malfunctioned again. No way to fix them because the tree was decorated. Over the next few weeks, strand after strand after strand died. It is now two days after Christmas and only 1/4 of the tree lights up. This is 2020 and the technology for Christmas tree lights is much better than it was back in the 70s so why is Balsam Hill using such horrible lights? Why!? We will dismantle this tree today and strip every light off of it and restring it with better lights. This tree cost about $1000 so we shouldn't have to do this when we've only had the tree for less than a year and a half. read more

I really don't like to post negative reviews however, this one was worth speaking up about. Was excited to peep out an orange tree we saw right behind some pipe and drape so my dad and I just took a quick look. My dad then said hello to some employees he saw working hard and they started making small talk. This female employee with glasses comes over and says my dad can't be in the area, and cut off the conversation he was having with the hard worker in the back. She was so rude and for being in a Christmas store, her rudeness took away any happiness of shopping in the Christmas spirit. She should reconsider how she treats customers, especially who drive from long distances to check this store out. read more

We bought a new $2,000 flip tree right before Christmas 2022. The first one arrived broken (pedals broken off because of shipping). Second tree arrived several weeks later, also broken due to the pedals being broken off due to the shipping. Nearly a month later the third one arrived and was not broken. The plastics pedals are clearly this tree's Achilles heel. We were really surprised that such a high end product is shipped so poorly. Caveat emptor! read more

After saving my money to finally buy the Christmas tree I really loved, after a couple of weeks use, the fairy lights started flickering and dimming and I don't think the tree lights will last to Christmas eve. So terribly disappointed as they only give a 7/8 day warranty and they don't guarantee their products at all. I phoned the Outlet and the manager of the outlet kept telling me that she is sorry, but there is nothing that can be done. I would NOT recommend buying from this store if you want a tree that lasts at least until the holidays. No customer service and no refund and no help at all if there is a problem one week after purchase. It will be a sad Christmas for my family this year, looking at a tree without lights. read more

We spent hundreds $$$ on a pre-lit Balsam Hill Saratoga Spruce tree in 2016. Lights constantly burnt out, and finally an entire section went dead and could not be fixed with master light or fuse replacement. This was despite the tree being carefully stored in a finished part of our house, and only taken out and put up only a couple of times. The tree always wobbles when fully assembled. The parts just never quite fit flush together. When I called customer service they basically said, "You didn't buy an extended warranty, so too bad so sad." She was combative, blame-shifting, rude, and unhelpful. Customers that spend hundreds or thousands on trees expect them to last a reasonable length of time. And when they don't last they have a reasonable expectation to at least be offered a partial refund or store credit. We received neither. We spent literally hours cutting out the old lights, which were attached by a bazillion tiny zip ties and clips (overkill, Balsam Hill, overkill). My hands still ache from that task. Heed the many Yelper warnings here that I wish I had known about in 2016. Avoid this company. Next time I'm buying from National Tree Company. read more

I just bought a tree from Balsam Hill and it was a total disappointment. I paid a lot of money for the tree and it didn't look as realistic as it described. I didn't realize there was $ 50 fee for the return so I asked the rep as well as the supervisor to waive the fee due to false advertisement. They refused to make the exception and said my satisfaction didn't not qualify for the free return. It's only fair that I absorb the return cost if it was my fault. It's the fact the description and pictures were falsified and I have to pay for their false advertisement. I'd pick the Costco tree over this damn ugly tree for a fraction of the price. I should have read the comments before making my purchase. Please do make the same mistake that I did. read more

This is probably one of the better places to get a good deal on an artificial tree, and/or holiday accessories... Good selection. BUT, be sure to check out the back area, where there are I will say "last year's, or discontinued" trees. You get less of a selection, but much lower prices. The help here, is what brings my rating down. Disorganized, confused and not communicating with each other, makes for a terrible experience. Truly, the only saving grace was the price, and the super friendly and efficient guy who was bundling (packaging it up) our tree and helped put it in the car. read more

I ordered my first Balsam Hill product this Christmas and I absolutely LOVE it. I got the Greenbrier Mountain Pine wreath (24", unlit) and it just blows me away. The foliage looks so real, the craftsmanship is excellent, and it reminds me of my Mom's favorite Christmas wreath that always hung on our front door. It shipped quickly, arrived promptly and well-packaged so there was no damage, and was super easy to unbox and get hanging. I love love love my new wreath! It'll be around for many years! read more

A few years ago I purchased a rather expensive unlit tree from Balsam Hill with a 10 year warranty. Want to see a picture of my beautiful Balsam Hill tree. So would I, but we don't have a warranty-replacement tree ready to put up yet 9 days before Christmas Eve. Balsam Hill knew our tree was leaning significantly and was defective back in December 2019. I have a copy of the email chain saved. Then they sent an email in late October to confirm our shipping address. I confirmed the address the next day, but according to Balsam Hill, that information "fell through the cracks". We were promised our tree would be shipped in early November, so when I hadn't received our tree by Thanksgiving week, I called them. Between chatbot and "customer service" I spent hours on hold and was promised a replacement tree December 2nd. Finally, December 7th the warranty replacement tree arrived. The stand included with the tree was really wobbly with ONLY the bottom section of the tree installed correctly. So hours on hold and finally a new stand was promised. The new stand arrived December 15th. It is flimsy, rusty, and doesn't look like the right stand for this tree. It is dropping rust onto the floor. It has far fewer cross braces. With only the bottom section of the tree installed correctly it is unstable. Did I mention we are 9 days until Christmas Eve. I have been promised another new tree stand which, if I'm lucky, might arrive before Christmas Eve. Also, if I'm lucky will not wobble or be flimsy. Our full 10' tree takes three days to light and decorate. This means we will have no Christmas tree this year for the first time in my life unless I go out and buy something else... during a pandemic... and a state-wide stay-at-home order. Having been lied to multiple times by "customer service" I declined to continue the pain of trying to work this out with Balsam Hill and have demanded, through the Better Business Bureau a pro-rated refund. At this point it's that or small claims court. read more

Well 2020 is not very Merry - apparently. I order the set of two large outdoor ornaments...one with "Merry" and the other with "Christmas". Prior to leaving for Thanksgiving one large box arrived. This is a TWO ornament set. When I returned, the second box had arrived. I now have two ornaments that both say Christmas. They are pretty but I ordered Merry Christmas not Christmas Christmas. I have spent the past 4 hours calling, waiting for a return call and now waiting for a supervisor. The rep was zero help (yes I have his name) His solution involved me re-packaging and returning the ornaments and I would get the replacements (which I a paid for in early November) in approximately two weeks...I feel quite sure this is not going to happen given my experience thus far. Again...these are Christmas ornaments so the point of ordering them was to enjoy over the holidays. I will not be home the latter part of December so I guess I could hope, when I return in January, there have been 2 boxes appx 36 x 36 which have been sitting on my front porch for several weeks. Screams no one is home.... What did I ask for...overnight Merry and I will leave the second Christmas by the side garage for someone to pick up. Not my fault they are apparently overwhelmed...did I mention my Grandin Road orders have been perfect. First and last time with Balsam Hill. I am going to cancel the charge via AMEX and call it a day. That means that of my 520 reviews, I have only given one star five times. Congratulations Balsam Hill on being one of five awful businesses to earn a single, dingy star from me. I hope others will read this review to save themselves tears, stress, agony, despair, increased blood pressure and the feeling of being ripped off. I can see across various sites on the internet that there are so many awful reviews of this place. I am really surprised that no one has filed a class action lawsuit yet. I am also amazed that they are endorsed by the BBB. I now really question the processes of BBB's endorsement. And I know Balsam Hill has been featured on many prominent talk shows which is misleading since the trees and customer service are hugely disappointing. I pride myself on honest reviews so here is my honest assessment. Here is how it breaks down: Tree (excluding lights): Four stars, it looks pretty darn good. Tree Lights: Zero stars, they arrived broken so the extra $150 I spent to have a pre-lit tree actually cost me even more since I had to spend my own money on new lights. BH still hasn't sent me new lights like they said they would. Also, it was very time consuming having to cut the lights off my tree, much less putting the new lights on. Customer Service: Awful. You can't get through the phone lines, if you try sending an email you get an error message. Online chat is the best option. BH has probably resorted this to avoid the verbal abuse they take on a daily basis. In desperation I also tried calling the store. To their credit they did call me back and explained that they phone lines are busy because it's the busy season - uhhh, no kidding, staff for the holidays if you are selling holiday products. When I finally got someone on the phone they said they would expedite some lights to me but its been a week and no lights. Be sure to check out the accompanying picture of my Balsam Hill tree. I guess I would equate Balsam Hill to the modern day Grinch who Stole Christmas. Purchased a $240 battery operated light wreath. It was beautiful, however, this is the 2nd season of use and half of the lights are dim which is quite noticeable. We've replaced batteries and checked all bulbs and were told by Balsam Hill they would not replace it since it's out of warranty. Poor customer service and quality. Bottom line: Purchase a wreath elsewhere for 1/4 of the price and add battery operated lights. You'll save $200! read more
