Probably one of the worst meals I've had in years. We dined in (after eating, I see why it was completely empty)-- yet somehow in the time it took to transport the food from the kitchen to the table, it transformed into something that felt like it had sat in a delivery car for hours. We had the cashew chicken and something that claimed to be a spicy curry dish -- I'm not sure what they tried to coat the meat with, but it all just felt slimy and goopy. The flavors were more or less what you would expect for an American style Chinese place, though definitely on the crappier end of the spectrum. I don't expect miracles when eating at random takeout joints, but this really fell short of even my already tempered expectations. On the plus side, the neighborhood raccoon enjoyed the rest of it. How a place like this survives when the great Sichuan restaurant a few doors down goes out of business is beyond me. read more

To begin, I am not very picky with my Asian takeout but this place confused me. I ordered teriyaki chicken with white rice, steamed dumplings, and then it came with a free egg roll which was cool. The dumplings were super bland, but soft and hot so not horrible. The teriyaki chicken was where I got really confused. It was not teriyaki chicken except for the presence of sesame seeds. The sauce was like 100% peanut sauce, which I was fine with it and ate because I was hungry. But, teriyaki chicken isn't just chicken covered in peanut sauce and sesame seeds?? The food was hot and obviously fresh, so I give it 3 stars. But avoid the teriyaki chicken & steamed dumplings. I'll probably order from here again to see if there is something that is more what I'm looking for, because I can tell the quality could definitely be awesome. read more

This establishment is located at the bottom of an apartment building. They are extremely disrespectful to the residents of the area. It's 11 pm on a Monday evening. There has been loud music, an MC on an even louder microphone and bright colored lights coming from the establishment. Calls to request that music be turned down only result in 15 minutes of peace. Love this place. The counter people are super nice and the food delish. Careful - if you ask for spicy it will be very spicy. And I eat spicy food! Under the appetizers, the potstickers were perfectly cooked. Flavored with ginger, they were tender, aromatic and satisfying. The egg drop soup is richer than most places. They are generous with the egg and the stock has a rich flavor. Great if you are feeling a bit unsettled. Last time I was here I had the beef chow fun. Tasty and interesting. Some of the noodles were crispy and it added to the experience. My dining partner is vegetarian. He enjoyed the veggie egg roles (no egg). He had the Hunan vegetables. Great assortment of veggies with a nice spicy taste. He ordered without the broccoli and I would recommend the same. This place may be a hole in the wall, but do yourself a favor and find it. Many times online they'll take orders but when you show up the place is closed with no one in sight. I end up having to call grubhub or whoever to refund. I was craving some Chinese food so I decided to give this place a try. I order shrimp egg fou young , crab ragoons, and a soda. I received a free egg roll for spending over $15 I believe. The egg found young was sweet but not in a bad why..... I'm use to it being savoy with garvy but this order was made with a sweet broth . I mixed my white rice with it was good. The cradle ragoons were fresh and hot when the delivered them. I would pass on the egg rolls it wasn't tasty at all .....no flavor. The portions are a nice size I had alot of leftovers. Ordered tonight through postmates. We got 2 chicken dishes: chick w/veggies and chicken delight. In both the chicken had this soggy coating with sesame seeds that wasn't quite breading, wasn't quite anything else. I think it had been prepped for sesame chicken or something fried, but then they tossed it in our sautéed dishes instead so it ended up kind of gooey and slimy and with half the coating coming off in the sauce. Thankfully the veggies were still good and plentiful, so at least there was something to eat, but overall it was a big disappointment. Maybe we got the assistant chef tonight. read more

This place is gross. Upon entering this empty place, we sat down and ordered (against my better judgement). Table seemed sticky. Place seemed dirty. The food was not good! Egg rolls were ok/ mediocre. Veg fried rice and sesame tofu were awful. Wrong taste, wrong texture and just unappetizing. I will never go back. If I could give a negative review, this is it. This was the worst Chinese restaurant experience that I have ever had. We ordered three things - sizzling rice soup, hot appetizer platter, and a bbq pork egg foo young. The sizzling rice for the soup was brown - I'm sorry but authentic sizzling rice is white and the soup was mediocre - probably the best thing about the whole meal. The appetizers felt like a rip off. The wontons lacked anything except for fried dough. The egg rolls were cut in half and they claimed to have chicken in them except that I didn't taste any. The crab rangoon - (I don't like crab rangoon and this one reminded me why I shouldn't have ordered it in the first place) was mostly cream cheese - maybe I saw some imitation crab in there. The shrimp toast was just greasy beyond belief and I could taste the MSG in it. Just disappointing and disgusting. But not even the worst part - now, egg foo young is supposed to be fried as a patty - with egg, vegies, onions and meat. This dish came out like a scrambled omelette drowning in sweet gravy. My friend took one bite and was disappointed. She requested for the dish to be sent back and they informed us that if we did that, we'd have to pay for a new dish. Service was disappointing - we had to get up once to get their attention and it took multiple tries to get their attention. Disappointing overall experience. I will not make the mistake of coming back again. I don't think that Valerie S should be criticized for not liking this place. You know a Chinese place is pretty damn good when you take a 6'7", 400lb man in for lunch and he can't even finish is portion of food! Yeah the portions are that big! My best friend in the whole wide world came to town this weekend and we wanted a quick and affordable lunch. Bamboo Garden did the trick. It's not the best Chinese food I've ever eaten but it's huge portions and its cheap! We ordered shrimp fried rice, some sort of thin noodle spicy chicken dish and an order of crab rangoon. I normally judge all my Chinese restaurants by there crab rangoon and these crab rangoons were lacking in taste. I was a wee bit disappointed but the shrimp fried rice made up for it. It was huge heaping portion and even for two more lunches. Like I said my friend couldn't even finish his whole meal and that's really saying something. The space is small and bare. But they do make up for it in charm. Fresh flowers are on each table (we had beautiful red roses) and bright and lively plants are also found throughout the restaurant. The floors and tables are clean and the food comes out hot and nicely plated. If you are looking for huge portions and cheap fare. This is a great place but if you are wanting amazing, mind blowing Chinese food I would go else where. read more

BLEH ZERO STARS. I do not understand how this place has one good review. We ordered a bunch of dishes and not one person from our party could eat the food. The pad thai was colorless and tasteless. The orange chicken had a mysterious liquid collecting at the bottom. The edamame was even old and shriveled up. We ordered dumplings that were unrecognizable (but were maybe at one point in time pot stickers??) shriveled, and once again tasteless. After trying all of the Chinese places downtown, my buddy and I ventured into Lake View for some grub. Since our first time going there, I've been back multiple times because I like the food so much. I've seen some poor reviews on service, but I've only had good experiences there. I think the service is on a level parallel to a Lettuce restaurant (think Big Bowl, Ben Pao, Wildfire, Maggianos, RJ Grunts...) Try the Sizzling Rice Soup and the Spicy BBQ Pork Lo-Mein. They're amazing. One more thing, the place runs on carry-out and delivery, so don't be surprised if it's empty. I'm 95% sure its BYOB, so grab a six-pack with a buddy, and go for it anyway. Ordered their fried squid, lemon chicken, and empress chicken. The calamari was fine. Their batter is flavorless and too thick to be crispy, but there was a lot of meat, and their sweet and sour is actually decent. Legitimately citrusy, and doesn't just taste like a spicy orange kool-aid. The lemon chicken was not bad, and I was glad I chose small piece of chicken for this, to at least get a little closer to some kind of crispy friedness. Not all the way successful. But it wasn't drowning in sauce, so there's that. And the empress chicken. Where do I start? The large pieces of chicken were interesting - huge and meaty to chew through, and freshly cooked. Fry anything that big, of course, and the batter comes off like wet wrapping paper. So why the two stars? Both the lemon chicken and empress chicken came on top of a random vegetable medley...thing. The lemon chicken was just wilted broccoli, but the empress chicken was bathing in this stew of the same wilted broccoli, zucchini(?), water chesnuts, and something else. Upon opening the empress, the sauce had that kind of smoky-stale odor that just smelled Old, and I think I narrowed it down to the vegetables. I ate them anyway. It was a mediocre evening of Chinese food, and I'm confident I would have spared myself the horrible bathroom adventures that started after midnight and lasted long into the afternoon if I hadn't touched the vegetables. It pains me to write negative reviews but I can't help myself. This was quite possibly one of the worst meals I've ever had. My husband and I were craving some Chinese cuisine and thought we'd go out on a limb and try a new place. It had great reviews on GrubHub, so we thought it made sense but boy, did we make a bad choice. We ordered chicken potstickers, chicken chow fun, Mongolian beef, kung pao chicken, and chicken fried rice. When I opened the containers, I couldn't tell what was what which should've been my first clue. We didn't attempt to try the fried rice and kung pao chicken since the first three dishes were enough to turn our stomachs. The food had absolutely no taste with the exception of the oil that it was cooked in. It was very greasy and I questioned whether the Mongolian beef even contained real meat given that it was not at all the color or texture of beef and the taste was non-existent. I see that the reviews were better months ago so perhaps something changed? Next time, I'll forego the convenience of delivery and drive myself to Chinatown if it means I'll get a reliable, edible meal. read more

I'm not sure how the service is when you dine in, but carry out service was horrible! I was the only person in there when I placed my order to go, yet it took 30 minutes and a couple seated for dining in got their appetizers before I got my order! There was also an order that was called in that was ready before mine, so not a fan of carry out service at all. The food was ok, not much to write home about. The shrimp fried rice was good, but it had too much fried egg for my liking. It should have been labeled vegetable fried rice with the option to add shrimp. If I lived in the area I might return but I'll take a pass because I don't want to waste so much time waiting on a to-go order, especially when I'm the first one there. Overall, I'll stick to ordering Chinese when I'm at work since I can get better from Chinatown than what I waited a half hour for. read more

I am a huge fan of Chinese food, however I am very very picky when it comes to it. I have tried many many different restaurants and will only go back to this one. Even after moving farther away, I'll still come up for bamboo. I have had many different entrees and have never been disappointed. Granted the decor is cheap and the place is normally empty and the music is elevator-esque, the food is amazing, the short Mexican server-woman (who is always there) is very kind, and the food is fresh & piping hot & made with only the freshest of ingredients. I travel quite a distance, from U. Village to Lakeview, just to come here, and the food is the reason why. Now, if your the type of person who is more concerned about being in a place that is well-known and has glitz & glam, than Bamboo Garden is not the place to be; but if you are serious about good, chthonic food, then Bamboo Garden should be where you go to dine next. Hey hey! I think I found my new Chinese delivery place! We tested out Bamboo Garden by ordering all our regular items, and it hit the spot and our expectations. The chicken fried rice was really good, nice and egg-y, with big chunks of quality chicken. The egg rolls were solid - only complaint there is they give you a cup of their own sweet and sour sauce, and I happen to prefer the yellow stuff in the packets. Mu Shu Pork was delicious - that was the BF's order, and I may be a Mu Shu convert from now on. My order, the BBQ Pork Egg Foo Young, was very tasty, although nothing like the Egg Foo Young I'm used to. Instead of a brown gravy, it was more of a sweet and sour sauce. The BBQ pork in it was fantastic and flavorful - I'd recommend getting that with at least one dish. Looks like unless I'm really craving a more traditional egg foo young, I'll be back at Bamboo Garden!! read more

They won't win style awards for their interiors, but this is a decent Chinese restaurant in a neighborhood with some awful ones. You'll either like this place or poo-poo it; there is no middle ground. My suggestion is to give it a try and have an open mind; this isn't Chinatown. My fave is the sesame chicken. I'm not sure huge balls of chicken are true Chinese cuisine, but it's a nice change from others I've tried. I like how unassuming the place is, and it's become a guilty pleasure for a few friends of mine. Prepare yourself: the service is attentive and polite, but the food takes a while to leave the kitchen. I'd also question the taste of their eggrolls and some other dishes I've tried. I LOVE this place so much that I felt the need to write review even though I moved to NYC a couple months ago! Mostly because I've been craving it before and since I left. The eggrolls are the BEST. The peking chicken is AMAZING. And sadly, I've never been able to find the dish anywhere else. It always surprises me how dead this place is, but as Bunny said, this place is totally underrated. The deadness can be a perk at times though; my friend(s) and I don't get such strange looks for our ridiculous conversations. I don't think I've ever been disappointed with the food, the prices or the service (the woman whose name I never got [!] is the nicest person ever). Keep in mind, I went on a day and time where it wasn't remotely busy. I had the chicken chow mein and thought it was pretty good. Not blow my mind good, but I wasn't grossed out. The portion was insane for me. I didn't get around to ordering and appetizers or soups because the chow mein was more than enough for me. The chicken was overfried and then sitting in sauce so it was an almost inedible texture when I got it. Further, the sauce wasn't spicy at all. Tired and hungry after too much wandering around on a recent trip to Chicago, we stumbled into Bamboo Garden. Usually when I am tired I'll just eat anything, and I never expect the places I find by surprise to be that great. Not so with Bamboo Garden! This place was the best Chinese food I'd had in a long long time. We ordered the steamed dumplings, which were very good and came with a vinegar-y sauce, as they should. For the main course we had the Kung Pao Beef. Oh boy was it great! The beef was a little crispy around the edges and tasted like it had been seared in spices on the pan. The sauce was delicious and slightly sweet, and the crispy noodles underneath were a great complement. The lemon chicken was delicious as well, tender big pieces of chicken with a crispy coating that was not greasy, and a really nice thick lemon sauce. We really enjoyed this place. As a mother of two, I would definitely bring my children here! It's quiet and somewhat empty (don't people know about it?). I would feel relaxed knowing that my kids weren't being noisy in a crowded place, which Bamboo Garden eventually will become. read more

I read the reviews and thought this would be the perfect place for cheap "American Chinese" carry out but what we got was completely inedible and expensive! 2 apps, 2 entrees and rice and our meal topped $40! Ordered the egg rolls (overcooked, greasy and filling was kind of gross), crab rangoon (very little filling, basically a fried wonton), Mongolian beef 'spicy' (um, not spicy at all but maybe they didn't see my request), this dish also smelled terrible..as in, I recoiled when I gave it a good sniff. The taste was also off...some ingredient was overpowering it (maybe peanut butter?). Two bites in and I couldn't make it any further. Also ordered the beef with broccoli. Meat texture was similar to Mongolian beef...wet and unappetizing as if it had been microwaved. PS - It's not clear when you're ordering online if dishes COME with white rice and the brown rice is an up-sell...or your only option is to order brown rice. I can't believe I haven't written a review for Bamboo Garden yet. This has definitely been my go-to spot for Chinese food in the area over these past several years. I've had two birthday dinners there and have friends in the suburbs who come over just to eat there. More people need to discover this delicious, humble restaurant! The food is consistently good (although I haven't had the pleasure to try everything on their menu yet) and the staff are always super friendly. My favorite dishes are Mongolian Beef/Shrimp, General Chow's Chicken, and the curry fried rice (when I'm in the mood for crazy spicy). read more
