We ordered delivery, just so you know. At 8pm on a random Tuesday, it took about an hour, maybe a little more and we're less than a mile away. I was very surprised at the cost, because I was looking at a menu online. Fair warning: don't go by any menu prices online. It was pretty pricey -- especially considering it was cash only and we had to raid our kid's piggy bank to pay the bill. The pot stickers (aka boiled dumplings) were below average. I have come for lunch before and would say in my last experience the food taste and quality was above average but this time me and several others were quite disappointed. Went there for take-out lunch and found a complete mess. Almost the entire seating area was taken over by boxes of food and a worker (quite pleasant though) was cutting up broccoli on one of the tables, putting the pieces into a garbage bag and the leftovers back into a box. When he worked on my order, he placed his paring knife into the garbage bag and later retrieved it without washing it or his hands (and after handling currency bare-handed). There was food all over the floor, to the point that I looked for and was surprised to see their sanitary rating was "Satisfactory." The resultant order was fair at best (gave me the wrong soup), including some of the worst General Tso's I've ever had. It was breaded but the sauce wasn't impressive and I wound up throwing my leftovers away rather than taking them home for another meal. Even the rice was dry and boring. From the reviews and some notes under tabletops, there must be a lot of happy patrons, but I think they take the "dive" aspect a little too far. Hands down, one of the best Chinese places I've ever found! Visiting my father-in-law in Glen Rock for Christmas, his go-to Chinese place was closed for the holiday so we sought other options. Read about Bamboo House online so we gave it a shot...thank goodness the other place was closed! We met the owner, Sherry, and she was surprised to learn that we decided to come in after reading online reviews. She showed us a picture of herself behind the counter on the day she opened 26 years ago. We ordered a bunch of food, including Mom's Dumplings based on online raves for them. While we waited for food to be prepared, Sherry brought us some extra Mom's Dumplings out to us and chatted with us - ask her for the story behind the dumplings! Sherry, the owner, is awesome and very personable and her food is amazing; very light and not too heavy like your typical Chinese restaurant. This place is not good. I am not a picky eater and would not normally rate a place with 1 star; however, i was very disappointed with Bamboo House. I ordered, veggie lo mien, sweet and sour chicken, bamboo house chicken and pork dumplings. The lo mien was very greasy, the sweet and sour chicken was basically a fried chicken breast in a very bland sauce and the bamboo house chicken was over cooked and the sauce tasted very similar to the sweet and sour sauce. Wow .....What a disgusting place!!! We have ordered for years now and tonight was the absolute last time. They told us it would be an hour for delivery (We live 2 miles away) after waiting an hour and a half we call and they still haven't sent it with the delivery guy! As to expect we asked for a fair discount and we are told they don't bargain with prices and we have to be understanding because they have a new driver. Not only did they give us an attitude they told us we have to be understanding. Hot Noodles in Sesame Sauce was disappointing and not worthy of more than a single bite D. Bamboo House is much, much more than a restaurant where you can get truly unique, absolutely delicious and appreciably affordable Chinese food. I know that's a Big Assertion with which to start a review but I'll back it up. Hear me out. And, because this is Yelp, I'll share my take on the amazing food too! I've been fortunate to have travelled and eaten all over the world. And, against that backdrop, I can honestly say this is one of my favorite spots for lunch or dinner on earth. Bamboo House exudes heart and soul. It exemplifies the universal value of treating others as you'd like to be treated. So why? What am I talking about? First, the bigger-than-just-the-food stuff. Bamboo House is owned and run by an incredibly nice Taiwanese woman named Sherry who cares intensely about every dish she cooks and every customer she serves. She can't help but smile and delight when customers are happy. And, she'll cry when someone is mean spirited or feels let down. Sherry decided she wanted to own a "dumpling house" as a child in Taiwan and, with Bamboo House, she has realized that dream with dumplings that are a real highlight here, and anywhere. When you enter the small and unassuming Bamboo House, you'll notice the handwritten notes from adoring children and adults, on walls and on the tables, professing their love for Sherry and her food. If you call Bamboo House and need your order ready in five minutes, she'll politely say she needs ten or fifteen because Everything (and I mean Everything) is made to order and she cares way too much about quality to take shortcuts. She even makes her own fried crispy noodles (a cheap, pale and flimsy mass-produced giveaway with duck sauce elsewhere) which virtually no Chinese restaurants do. She buys and uses ingredients from vendors she has known for years but doesn't do any marketing with verbiage about "local," "seasonal" or "farm-to-table." She has always sourced and cooked that way, simply because the food tastes better with better ingredients. To Sherry, this isn't modern or trendy thinking. If you're here in off hours, you'll see Sherry laboriously filling and wrapping her dumplings or meticulously trimming asparagus or Chinese spinach. Her husband, a wonderful man from Costa Rica, and her Chinese chef, are the core team, with Sherry's large and growing family a sort of extended team. You get the idea. Bamboo House, seemingly a small, hole-in-the-wall, Chinese place, is actually as much a human and culinary treasure as any in America. It's community incarnate. And, the food! First, the dumplings are a must! As Sherry is the heart of the restaurant, the dumplings are the sun around which the rest of the great dishes orbit. Probably the "Mom's Dumplings," pork and shrimp, are the most popular. The wrappers are so delicate and expertly closed. And, the fillings are so flavorful and generously portioned. She usually has other varieties that change each day. Maybe one with chives or another with peanut. Just great and soulful food. There really aren't better dumplings in NYC, the US or even in China. I know, from first-hand experience. There are really good dumplings in those places but they're not better than these. Beyond dumplings, check the specials menu behind the register or just ask what's good when there. Or, you can choose something from the menu with traditional options. Crispy fish with garlic sauce, orange beef and broccoli, chicken with eggplant or big wild shrimp with lobster sauce and avocado...the dishes, always changing, reflect a very experienced and talented Chinese chef along with the regional bounty of the tri-state area. If Yelp allowed six, or ten or more, stars, Bamboo House would get my highest rating. The food is fantastic, unpretentious and unique. Even better, this is a restaurant which it feels great to support. Ridgewood is lucky to have this place. I live well outside the region but whenever I'm traveling anywhere near Ridgewood, I always go to Bamboo House. I eat there and buy extra to take home. You should too. Like most Chinese take-out, I have found not every single thing on the menu is a winner, but if you find the handful of items that are consistently good, then its worth a return trip again and again. Sherry is a character, but has always been sweet to me...once she asked why she hadn't seen me in a while and I told her that my husband had lost his job so we were trying to eat out/order out less...and she always remembered to ask me about my husband the next couple times she saw me....The best things to order on any given day are her board specials....homemade dumplings bursting with filling, and entrees made with whatever fruit and/or veggie she has fresh that day (mango chicken, beef w/ asparagus, etc.) - and her homemade fried noodles are THE BEST hands down of any I have every had in the area, or anywhere for that matter. If I am not feeling any of the specials, my go to order is the Sha Cha chicken, its soooo delicious, I ask for it spicy. Yes, the prices are a bit high, but I'd rather pay a bit more (and order less often) for quality food than less for cheap, greasy, low quality Chinese food. And, with most entrees, I can get at least 2-3 meals out of the portion - I cant say the same for my husband, though! Haha! read more

Been going here for 5 years and the food is great!!!! HOWEVER, the owner (lady who answers the phone) must be eating too much MSG because she's gone off the deep end. I canceled a portion of my order once, I called back and told her to cancel the wonton soup and she told me she was cancelling the entire order and then hung up. I called back a week later to place another order, same order again and she placed me on hold then never clicked back over to finish the order. I decided to take a ride over there to place the order in person and she said she didn't take my order because she doesn't want me to cancel the order. Give me a break, I never canceled the initial order - she did!!! I canceled a Won Ton soup she's acting like I robbed her restaurant of fortune cookies and duck sauce and I put her out of business.
