The food here isn't very good to be honest but the price is cheap and the portion is big, just like an Asian cafe. The menu is clear and simple and the food comes out fairly quickly. It's been a while since I stopped by so the other day I called to pick up a to go order for lunch. My favorite dish here is Nasi Uduk, but I wanted noodle instead of rice. I ordered Bihun, Kwetiau, Mie Goreng Jawa with Egg Noodle and Nasi Ikan Penyet (tilapia). I like the flavor and already know what to expect. As for the tilapia to go order, it would be nice if they can cut some opening sections of the to go foam box to keep tilapia crispy while driving home. I will return if I am back in this area when I am craving familiar Indonesian flavors. Indonesian food is my favorite takeout meal! Thanks to Yelp, I learned this restaurant was close by and called in a takeout order. It was promptly prepared with twenty minutes and I had an hour drive home. The gentleman who helped me was very nice. Upon opening my items, I had requested the following and the bill was about $45: Sate Ayam (chicken satay) with peanut sauce (no cucumber garnish?) Mi goreng (thin noodle stir fry with chicken and vegetables) Gado Gado (boiled/steamed cabbage, green beans, sprouts, potato, egg, and extra peanut sauce), and shrimp chips -also, strangely topped with romaine lettuce?? I appreciated their bowl of peanut sauce they added per my request. Large steamed white rice (very generously packed in a styrofoam takeout box) 2 Extra bags of their shrimp chips (eagerly consumed one on my drive home) I enjoyed each of my choices. Overall, I'm happy I've come across an Indonesian Restaurant again. I appreciated their very generous portions. I got to enjoy my meals for another four more days with how large the portions were. Happy about that~ and YES I'm an odd one who loves these kind of leftovers. I did, however, doctor up their peanut sauce because it didn't have enough flavor/kick for me. There are many Indonesian restaurants within Los Angeles as well as the Greater Los Angeles area, and I'm always on the look out to try something new. I saw that this place was close to me, located in Temple City, and I had not tried it before. I went with my girlfriend to see how it was. The complimentary egg roll deal on Yelp requires a minimum of $20 on your order before taxes, just as a heads up. We each ordered one entree, so we did not qualify for that. I got the Nasi Jawa while my girlfriend got the Nasi Campur Banana Leaf. I would have to say that, of all the things I tried on each dish, the chili potatoes on the Nasi Jawa were the best thing. They were very filling, appetizing, and had just a small kick to it. Beyond that, the food was good but not amazing. The beef was a bit dry, and the tofu had an ok flavor. I think the food was just overall a bit on the bland side. The food didn't taste terrible, but it didn't really stand out to me. This is a mom and pop shop. Service was slow and I assumed it is because it's family-run so they are somewhat understaffed. The air conditioning didn't seem to be working well so the restaurant felt stuffy and warm. We ordered 3 different dishes to share. The portion were generous, the taste, however varied. The Roti Prata was greasy and didn't have layers. It wasn't fluffy or crispy. I probably wouldn't order this again. The Kwetiau Goreng was decent, but more on the bland side. It could probably use a bit more of the dark soy sauce or hot sauce for taste. Lastly, the Laksa was my favorite dish here, it was flavorful and not overpowering in curry flavor. (This review is for a Postmates delivery order that I have made today.) I have ordered at Banana Leaf for a couple of times, both dine-in and delivery (through Postmates). I always order Beef Rendeng and something else. Their Beef Rendeng doesn't come with rice. I know that. So I always place an extra order of rice to come with it. However, today when I ordered, they don't have an option to add rice or custom item anymore. So I put notes in special instructions saying "with rice, extra charge is ok." This always works with other restaurants that I have ordered from. So after I ordered, I got a call from the Postmates driver saying that it doesn't come with rice. I told her that I understand, I just want to place an extra order of rice. The Postmates driver gave the phone to the restaurant staff (it was a man, not sure if he is the owner or manager). He was talking in such a rude manner and saying, "we can't give you rice for free." I told him I understand, and I will pay for it. I never asked for free rice in the first place. He told me I can't order rice........ (?????) He was also talking in such a rude attitude so I told him to just cancel the order. He hangs up, and the order wasn't canceled. The order was still delivered to me without rice, and I was also charged. If you don't know how to add "rice" to my order, maybe you shouldn't let your restaurant be on Postmates. Maybe adjusting the order should be something that the Postmates driver should do, not the restaurant staff. But then maybe you should add "custom item" or other add-ons like "rice" on your menu? And I mean, why are you going all angry on me and telling me that you aren't giving me rice for free? Again, I never mention about FREE rice. I JUST WANT TO ORDER FRECKING RICE. I am so disappointed with this experience. Please keep in mind that I had successfully ordered food and RICE on Postmates with this restaurant before they decide to change their items on Postmates without "custom item". First impressions when I come in, theres a lot of Indonesian Magazine in front of the door and other brochures that looks annoying and untidy. The place looks just fine until I sit down and see the napkin box dusty. But it's fine. The decoration is unique just like the name, they have a painting of banana leaf. The service is great. This place is bad, and it should feel bad. I have never had Indonesian food before, but I've eaten most other Asian foods, so I didn't expect anything surprising. But, there is something odd about the spices used, I think. Every dish had weird mixes of flavors I did not like at all. The flat noodle dish with chicken seemed like a standard chow mein until an odd, soapy flavor came in at the end. The chicken sate was okay, and the best dish of the meal. Too bad so many restaurants in Los Angeles don't understand appetizers come before the entrees. And it was very different from Thai sate. A thick dark soy sauce on top along with garlic chips. Still okay. I got the smashed fried chicken I saw a lot of previous Yelpers had ordered (according to the photos). I ordered it because it was one of only a couple dishes listed as extremely spicy. Other dishes that said they had spicy elements were not marked as even mildly spicy. I guess the menu planning didn't go properly. The chicken was okay but just bland fried chicken. it comes with a large spread of chili paste. And this was the weirdest chili paste I ever ate. It was seriously disgusting, and I've had all kinds of chilis and chili concoctions in my life. The chicken came with some white rice covered in fried garlic shavings and a bizarre tamarind soup that tastes like a sweat version of beef and vegetable soup. Not good. They may have taken credit cards at one point, as they have a sign about minimums, but now it is CASH ONLY. To be fair, the place is small but it was packed when we came an hour before closing. Mainly by a huge party table of about 16 people. Service was friendly enough. And street parking is easy to come by. However, I won't be headed back. I've passed by Banana Leaf many times, always telling myself I'd visit one day. I've tried their lunch specials for take-out and wasn't all that impressed. And it wasn't until one of my friends asked for a restaurant recommendation did I finally get to try it out for myself. And it's probably safe to say that I won't be back anytime soon. Banana Leaf is a small restaurant located on Temple City Blvd by the dance studio and bakery. There is a small parking lot in the back as well as street parking, but these spots can get filled up quickly, especially when it's during the evening. The restaurant itself has about 10 tables. The workers are pretty nice, but there isn't much service. We walked in and pretty much seated ourselves because nobody came to greet us for several minutes. Grilled chicken skewers (chicken satay): The man taking our order recommended us to go with the combination satay, but I am not a fan of lamb, so I decided to just stick with chicken. This was highly recommended by Yelpers, and I'm glad I ordered this! This was probably the tastiest item out of everything we tried. Chicken was cooked well and had a nice char to it. It wasn't dry, but had good flavor, and the sauce it came with really enhanced the overall dish. Presentation of this dish was also pretty nice! My friend ordered the coconut rice combination thinking it sounded good. When it came, we all looked at it with interest. There were lots of small portions on the dish that looked pretty interesting. But upon eating it ... not so much. Maybe I'm just not a big fan of Indonesian food, but several of the side dishes were not appetizing nor did they taste good. Peanut and anchovy and dried soy bean didn't appeal to us, but the fried chicken and coconut rice weren't so bad and were the stars of the dish. The fried chicken had good flavor and wasn't dry, and the rice had a good flavor as well. But there were so many things on the plate that we didn't like that it really overruled the rest of the dish. My friend's brother ordered the banana leaf rice combination, a dish really similar to the coconut rice. After getting the dish and eating it, he said it tasted okay, but not something he'd want to order again. This dish came with a green bean and carrot vegetable that seemed to be from a can, as well as tofu and beef. It just didn't look good nor did it taste good. I was also able to try their lunch specials when my co-workers and I ordered take out from this place. They offer a number of items at a pretty low price, and I decided to go with the chicken laksa curry. It came in a pretty decent sized container, but there weren't too many pieces of chicken as there was fried tofu. The curry was a lot thinner than I am used to, but the flavor was not too bad. Eating this with rice made for a decent lunch. The curry also came with some square flour chunks and bamboo sprouts. I think you're supposed to add it to the curry for extra flavor, although after putting it in, it didn't do much to add to the flavor. And I wasn't a big fan of those flour things either. I tried the chicken and coconut rice lunch special and thought this was more worth it - and tastier, too! The chicken was slightly fried, but wasn't too oily nor dry. Had good flavor and a good amount of meat on the leg. The rice came with a few garnishes on top; thought it was pretty tasty. tl;dr - While eating at the restaurant, service seemed to be a miss and the dishes that we tried were a miss as well. My friends ended up saying that they probably should have ordered dishes that others recommended on Yelp as the ones they tried were no good. The only thing worth coming back for would be the grilled skewers, although I can live without it. But if you are interested in the lunch special, I think it's worth a try - especially if you're thinking of take-out. Don't expect your water to be refilled, or even getting someones attention, especially when they are busy but they work so slow and carelessly. First...the reason for taking away 2 stars...management and cleanliness. When you walk into a restaurant, you want to know that it's clean and comfortable. This was not the case. The food was very good as it was the first time I went. The service nothing like the first time I went. The lady took our order of food but never asked if we wanted something to drink. I waited for her to come back but it was so long that I got up to go find her. Finally she came to the table and we ordered a couple of drinks. I saw this place on yelp a while ago and the pictures of the combo satay really got me craving for it. Parked in the streets in front of the restaurant...came inside and was greeted by a lady who never once smiled while serving my table but smiled with other customers that were Indonesians or regulars. Combo satay - a little burnt up but it tasted good. The lamb, chicken and pork were all very juicy. Came with 2 types of sauces...my mom really liked the black sauce. I asked this other server about it and she didn't give us the brand but told us it was sweet soy sauce that can be purchased at any Indonesian market...are there any local Indonesian market? Fried egg noodle - another good dish but lacking of noodle...There were lots of veggies with big ugly cuts of cabbages. Avocado w/ chocolate - if compared to other places then this is probably a better place to get this drink. It was smooth, not too sweet and most importantly, it had the taste of avocado in it. Some places blend very little avocado that you can only taste the milk or its very icy with no taste. Fresh coconut juice - the taste was really different from the coconuts you normally get at the market. It didn't tasted natural but it tasted ok. I wouldn't pay $4 again for it... The food did took a while to come out...The satay took forever to come but that was understandable. However, the coconut juice took even longer? How difficult is it to chop a coconut? This place is interesting ... I've been here a few times so far, and it seems like the more I come here, the progressively better the food (and service) become. During my first visit, I ordered an entree consisting of chicken, soup, rice (*pretty* sure it was Nasi Ayam Kalasan bakar). It left something to be desired. My subsequent visits yielded noticeably better results. I rather enjoyed the Indonesian style Chicken Fried Thick Rice Noodle (Kwetiaw Goreng Ayam, if I'm not mistaken). It reminds one of Pad See Ew/Chow Fun. I also really liked their Combination Satay Plate - it consists of a total of 6 skewers (grilled chicken, pork, and lamb skewers). The skewers are covered in what appear to be fried onion bits and a dark, sweet sauce. Also on the plate are two small dishes - 1 of a peanut-type sauce, and the other a dark, sweet sauce with onions, peppers, and chilis (it's actually not that spicy). The Nasi Goreng Kombinasi (chicken and shrimp combination fried rice) is not bad either. It's pretty flavorful, and comes with a fairly large fried egg on top. Their beverages are pretty good - I enjoyed both the Es Cendol and Es Cincau. If you like coconut milk, palm sugar, and jelly, then those two drinks will be right up your alley. Their shaved ice was surprisingly pleasant and refreshing - although I found the presence of avocado to be a bit disconcerting, since I think we can all agree that avocado belongs in savory, and *not* sweet dishes. Still, I'd order it again! I think the potential for liking this restaurant is high, once you find a dish that you become enamored with. Some of their offerings are definitely better than others. Service may (understandably) be a bit slow if it gets busy, as I've never seen more than 1 or 2 servers on-duty at this establishment. Lunch specials are currently only $5.99+tax (Monday to Friday, 11AM-3PM). Even dinner pricing here is quite affordable, to be honest. The restroom is adequately clean. Parking should be easy to get on the curb if you come at a slow time. Otherwise, there is a large public parking lot across the street. If you have a choice, opt for one of the tables along the south wall of the restaurant, as they have cushioned seats on one side; all the other tables all have uniformly rigid chairs that will be painful to sit on for more than a minute. All in all, I am steadily developing an increasing liking for this restaurant, and I think I will be coming back here more and more often. :) read more

Ordered the fried rice with chicken - take-out delivery - came lukewarm, greasy, chicken was hard, dry and greasy, seemed old, rice was hard and old. The whole dish seemed like it was made yesterday and sitting under a heating lamp. Ate a few bites and threw the rest away. read more

Banana Leaf is a small Indonesian restaurant on Temple City blvd and Las Tunas. I was in the mood for southeast asian food and decided to look for the best authentic food in SG valley. Interior atmosphere was welcoming and its neat and well organized. They have a plethora of food selection on the menu. I decided to try the Mie Goreng Jawa (Fried Noodle) with mixed vegetables, sliced chicken strip, shrimps and eggs. It's soft, flavorful and tasty. They give huge portion, perfect for adult man with voracious appetite and high metabolic rate such as myself. I easily burn it during my HIIT workout. Anyway, I'm neither here or there let's continue w/ the food review. Staff was assiduous and provided good, efficient service. Prices were fair and affordable. Parking lot and metered street parking are available. Overall I had a good food and takout experience. I will definitely come back. I highly recommend Banana Leaf. read more

I can't believe it's true, The Sushi really isn't coming back ='((( I decided to try this place in hopes that ... I don't know, for memory's sake? This place wasn't bad, and pretty tasty and really affordable. I did not grow up with Indonesian influences and am not sure how authentic this place was but man did it pack a punch! I got the smashing catfish and it was fried to perfection and the sauce was a touch above numbing, I'm very grateful they put it on the side so I could dip at my own discretion x_X I must come back and try the oxtail soup and the smashing chicken!
