This is my family's favorite place to go. We've been coming here for years, and I just realize I don't have a review for this spot. This place means comfort food for us. I've usually only eaten here for dinner, but this is my first time trying out their lunch. Their price is reasonable and even better during lunch. Our must ordered dish is their House special steamed chicken. For today's lunch we also got their ong-choy with garlic, beef with string beans, and a lamb with green scallion dish. Flavors are good. Food came out quick. Service always been fine. My only complaint is that they have an outdoor seating area in the back of the restaurant where people smoke. Sometimes you get that strong cigarette smell when you're eating. It hasn't stopped us from coming here to eat.

I honestly can't remember the last time I actually sat down and dined at a restaurant in Alhambra since moving to DTLA, but I really miss it. A good pal of mine took me to this spot on Valley Blvd, and it was surprisingly very good.. plus, the prices were super reasonable. We ordered the house special fried rice, spicy spare ribs, and century egg congee. It was so good that I went back the very next day for takeout!!

China Bistro delivered a memorable experience, starting with their crispy chicken in onion and soy sauce--my personal favorite, crisp perfection on a plate. My sweet-and-sour-loving friend (the "play it safe" type) was actually spot-on: that dish was surprisingly crisp and balanced. Now, the Mapo Tofu could've used a life preserver--a bit too dry for my liking. Service was fast, and the ambiance? Classic inside, relaxed outside, with the smoker-friendly patio. And with their diverse menu, you won't run out of new dishes to try--though I'll be back for that crispy chicken every time.

Came here for dinner this time and they were still pretty bustling around 7pm. There is plenty of parking outside. We were seated right away and they got us hot water. Their AC was on kind of high at the booths so I was freezing a bit and it also made the food turn cold fast. We ordered 3 dishes for 3 people and ate it family style. - Honey walnut shrimp ($21.95): good portion. The shrimp was nice and crispy with the perfect sweetness from the mayo (5/5) - Sweet and sour pork ($15.95): bite sized pieces of pork that can be kind of hard to chew depending on the piece. Sweet and sour sauce was on point (3/5) - Scallop mushroom crispy tofu ($17.50): good portion with soft tofu once you bite into the crispy exterior and paired deliciously with the thick savory sauce (5/5)

Small, more casual version of Chinese banquet style restaurant with a million menu options. Their food is pretty decent and at a reasonable price. Service is not great but not terrible either. They only have a few lazy-susan tables, so if you want more of that banquet style experience you can try reserving in advance. Food: Fish fillets with broccoli - Honestly could not find this on the menu, just showed the waiter a Yelp picture and he went oh yeah sure. On the milder side, felt like a decently healthy option. Fish was cooked well, not overdone. Crispy pork chop - Delicious, full of umami, and perfectly crisp battered pork chop pieces; tastes exactly like those of similar restaurants. Seafood and mushroom soup - Good, deep flavor and good texture from seafood chunks and egg white ribbons. Comes with shrimp and some fish pieces and veggies. Not quite a clear broth type of situation, likely thickened with something for a silkier mouth feel. Scallop and crab egg white fried rice - Very good, one of the better renditions I've had. It had a great seafood flavor as I believe they were a little more generous with the dried scallop pieces. Stir fried Chinese broccoli - Well executed, stalks were still nice and crisp, and lots of flavor from the bits of dried fish that are tossed with it. One of my favorite dishes we ordered. Beef chow fun - A little lacking in flavor, and the beef was not very tender. Overall there's nothing that really stands out, no flavor highlights and gets old very fast. I think I would get a different noodle dish next time.

#170: Sautéed On Choy with Garlic

11/01/2025: heeey Yelp, why only 3.4 stars for this amazing establishment?!? Our first time here, and I think we have chosen tonight's destination well! The interior dining room is absolutely PACKED and the outside patio is at capacity as well! Game 7 of the World Series probably doesn't hurt, they have the game on their screens. The wait wasn't bad at all, they quoted 20 minutes and it was only about 10 before we were seated. We noticed that my husband was the only non-Asian in the entire restaurant and I'm likely the only half-Asian... always a good sign when looking for truly authentic cuisine! IYKYK The dining room is bustling, the staff are hustling. The menu is extensive and Don says the experience is reminiscent of his business trips to Hong Kong. The aromas are heavenly, and I want to walk around from table to table with chopsticks in hand to sample absolutely everything! Under "Chef Recommendation", we ordered #1, House Special Crispy Chicken w/Stuffed Shrimp (half). Not exactly what we expected, but the skin was very crisp! We think maybe the shrimp is ground and formed with the chicken meat in to the skin? if served without knowing , you might think it was only chicken. Nice flavor and it's served with a plum sauce on the side. It could have used either a little more salt, or a second sauce option with perhaps vinegar, garlic and salt? Still good, but that would have elevated it to great! We also ordered #23, Deep Fried Squid with Spicy Salt. This was the star of our table! Perfectly crispy to the tooth, the calamari was tender, the batter is well seasoned and the fried scallions and garlic on top are (chef's kiss). For something green, #170 Sautéed On Choy with Garlic. Well executed, tender with just a little toothsome bite to the hollow stems. Plenty of garlic and a generous portion! note to self: Next time I'll branch out and try the versions with either the Spicy Bean Curd Sauce or the Salty Shrimp Paste. The service is fast. SO very fast! A little challenging to ask questions about the menu if you don't speak Chinese, but hey - I'm in their space! I see some have accused them of being unfriendly, but I didn't find that at all. They were all very attentive and kind! Needless to say, they've earned a bookmark from me and we will be back. I'd love to come with a larger group of 5 or more to take advantage of the big round tables with the Lazy Susan centers.

The fried chicken with soysauce is the star at this place! The chicken is fried perfectly with crispy skin but not dry inside. The chicken lays on top of soysauce with some green onions. The next best thing is the beef chow fun.

Came here around 7pm on a Saturday for dinner with some friends. They were busy when we came in but luckily we didn't have to wait for a table. They many tables instead as well as outside patio seating. We were seated at a booth but it was right under the air conditoner vent so it was cold while we ate. They have restrooms here and it was actually pretty clean. It is a bit loud inside but it didn't bother me too much. Their menu has English and Chinese which is convenient. We ordered the Sweet Sour Pork (15.95), Scallop Mushroom Crispy Tofu (17.50), and the Walnut Shrimp (21.95). We also got the egg waffle (6.95) for to-go. The servers here speak Mandarin and Cantonese but I think you can easily get away ordering by pointing at the menu or using English. The server was pretty nice and came to take our order fast. We got hot water and ordered rice (4.50 per bowl), but the rice portion is pretty big since they didn't serve them in a bowl but the big red rice container. The dishes were served pretty fast which was good since we were starving. The walnut shrimp was nicely fried and had good amount of mayonnaise that didn't feel greasy. The crispy tofu was my favorite though since it is the soft tofu with perfectly fried crispy skin. The sweet and sour pork was just okay though, but it was nice that it didn't have bones. The portion for all three were reasonable for the price and the economy. The service is also great because they actually help pack your leftovers for you. Overall, this a great choice for Cantonese homestyle food to eat with family or friends. I will visit again. Would recommend!

Food is very fresh, delicious and definitely family style. They service was okay. We had about 3 different waiters while we were there for lunch. If you go to dine in I would recommend staying away from the back patio tables. When we were there somebody was smoking out on the patio, everytime the doors would open all you could smell was smoke. It wasn't very appetizing. I would have given 5 stats but they charged 6.00 for tea. I mean come on hot water and a tea bag? Overall it was food that got us to come back, however we did a pick up order.

The food here is perfect. Place is not fancy but pleasant and cheerful. Service is so fast. It took less than 5 minutes for our food to arrive in bulk. 3 batches. This is my mom's favorite restaurant so even if it is far from us we don't mind driving. It is absolutely worth it.

    Seafood and tofu clay pot

For casual Chinese/Cantonese food dining, China Bistro stands out among the rest, offering good hearty foods at competitive prices!! I've been coming here for almost twenty years, since when I couldn't afford eating out too often. My favorite dish is definitely the deep fried crispy chicken with scallion and soy sauce. It's the reason why I keep coming back. I've been ordering this dish for as long as I remember. From what I know, the chicken has been marinated in soy sauce before it's deep fried, thus it is so flavorful. Absolutely delicious over white rice, especially after adding some of the scallions and soy sauce! I wouldn't recommend the "crispy deep fried chicken" as it isn't as tasty. They are two completely different dishes! Make sure to mention scallions and soy sauce upon ordering. I ordered the seafood and tofu clay pot as well. It's pretty solid. They offer lunch specials for less than $15 a dish with a huge menu to choose from. Great selections!! Service is decent. No complaints here, keeping in mind it's a casual Chinese restaurant. The interior is fair, while the building itself used to be a McDonald's decades ago. It's pretty spacious as they have large booths and big round tables as well. There is an outdoor dining area next to the parking lot. I myself prefer dining indoor, away from the streets.

I've had this place bookmarked in my Yelp app for a long time, and I finally happened to be in the area, so I was like, OK let me stop in. I went in and placed an order for their chicken wings, which come with a generous container of rice and a drink. It was very reasonably priced--you get about 10 wings, and everything was under $15. I'll post a picture of what my receipt looked like. The chicken itself was pretty good. In my opinion, it could've been cooked just a little bit longer. The outside was very crunchy, but the inside wasn't quite as done as I would've liked. If they had kept it down for another 2-3 minutes, I probably would've loved it. I ate a couple of pieces on my drive back home which was about 45 minutes and once I got home, I just popped the rest in the oven to cook it a bit more. That said, the service was really great, and they were super busy. I think I went in about 10 minutes after they opened and still waited around 20 minutes for my food, which was totally fine. By the time I left, the entire parking lot was full, and the dining room was packed. I waited in my car, and it was probably around 11:30-11:40 by the time I got my food. Honestly, that speaks volumes for a restaurant to be that busy within the first 30 minutes of opening. One thing to note: they don't take Apple Pay. It's cash, Visa, or MasterCard only. They also don't take Discover, and I'm assuming they probably don't take American Express either likely because of the fees.

We had lunch here today with a party of 15. They have a small private parking lot. It was busy at 12:30. Food was mostly good. Rating: Solid three Stars.

Interior is hardly decorated but has statement black and red tables and chairs haha. No one was dining in, but it seemed like Steam Fresh was popular for takeout. For us, a black sesame roll (could be a snack or dessert), four orders of steamed pork siu mai, two orders of juicy pork dumplings (soup dumplings), and a beef chow fun with soy sauce dish totaled to a little over $55. Everything came out piping hot and packaged well for takeout. We only waited about 15min, which was not bad at all. We really liked the siu mai and chow fun. Both were savory and addicting. Siu mai were especially juicy and meaty; they definitely satisfied our dim sum cravings. Soup dumplings were ok - I found the wrapper to be doughy and the filling kinda plain. The black sesame roll had an interesting rolled look and a sticky, chewy, jelly-like texture. It tasted like lightly sweetened black sesame paste mixed into what seemed like a combination of mochi and agar. The small parking lot in the back is free. We got lucky finding a spot in the late morning, but when we were ready to back out after getting our food, cars were either circling the lot or waiting for someone to leave.
