It was PACKED on a Saturday night. We came here for a friend's birthday and even with a reservation, we had to squeeze in super tight and get separated from our party across the room (though we did have more people than anticipated, but my friend says it usually doesn't get that fisted). There's street parking in the front and plenty of plaza parking in the back. You can enter from both ways. It's a smaller restaurant and a bit aged and dingy, but that's how you tell that this place has character. They have daily and lunch specials and there should be some translated versions of the menus somewhere, but that's what I can deduce from the flyers around the restaurant. It was very, very busy when we visited, but the workers did their best to work through the chaos and get orders out, take pictures for our table, clear things out, etc. Lots and lots of energy going around. For our visit, we got: duck, beef cubes and mushroom, walnut shrimp, mapo tofu, fish maw soup, another similar broth soup but with beef in it, sauteed green beans, sweet and sour pork, sauteed egg plants, complimentary sago dessert, and a very special dessert that roughly translate out to double skin milk, which is a Cantonese specialty. Yummy layer of milk skin on top, yummy not too sweet custard texture. I heard from my friend that this isn't easy to find and this is one of the few places that make it. I'd come back just for this. We also got hot tea (as per usual) and a serving of white rice to go with all of the veggies and protein dishes that we got. My favs were definitely the beef, walnut shrimp (my GOAT), mapo tofu (decently numbing spice), and again, the dessert. The inside of the restaurant was cozier than I thought it would be, a bit of the OG HK cafe vibe with rows of booth seating. I ordered to-go and it came with a box of rice. Food: - Shanghai style pork chop: sweet and sour, cooked with onions. This was decent, and the pork chops were not overly fatty like some other restaurants. - Kung pao chicken: Not the best. The wok heat didn't feel to be enough, and the peanuts were even a bit raw tasting to me. - Fish fillet with black bean sauce: I liked this dish the most out of the three. Cooke with bell peppers and onions, the flavor was good and paired well with rice. The fish fillet pieces were also meaty. Overall, it's nice to have more lunch special options around the area. So many Canto choices to pick from in the SGV, but this one is a gem. The retro interior is reminiscent of the 80's & 90's, which to me is a good thing as it brings back youthful memories lol. Now for the food: Suckling pig, which needs to be pre-ordered and pre-paid was excellent. Juicy meat and of course the best part was the skin...which reminded me of fighting over with cousins as a kid! A must order. Lobster noodle was the $23 special they always run. Don't expect much lobster meat as you'll be disappointed, but then for the price, I can't complain. However, the buttery e-mien underneath was worth the price. We always order extra noodle for $10 more. Walnut shrimp - decent sized shrimp and generous with the candied walnuts, but a bit too much mayo for my taste, which is certainly a personal preference as my mom loved it. Pretty affordable but mediocre Cantonese-style Chinese cafe Parking was ok but could be challenging since their parking lot is shared with many other businesses and there are not that many spots. Street parking is also an option but that is even harder. Service was disappointing but it was a Sunday afternoon so it was extremely busy. However, we were never offered any beverage refills and the food took 20+ minutes to arrive. Lunch Specials are served daily 11am-3pm and every dish comes with rice. Pricing was reasonable and most dishes were $12-13+. There was a good variety of chicken, pork, beef, and seafood dishes. Crispy Cornish Hen with Red Rice ($14.95) was delicious! The skin was so crispy and the inside was so tender. The red rice seemed like ketchup mixed with rice, which was interesting. The portion size was pretty generous and it came with 5+ big pieces! Definitely recommend! This was 9/10 Mongolian Beef ($12.95) was ok. There was a lot of beef and onions. It wasn't as tender as I expected and it would have been better if it was more flavorful. This was 6/10 Gillette Chicken ($10.99) was not bad. I thought it would be pan-fried chicken but it turned out to be deep fried chicken. It was very crispy and the meat was plentiful. Wanted to try Alice Kitchen across the street but didn't realize they closed on Wednesdays. Decided to give Bay Garden Cafe a try and it was surprisingly good. The restaurant is actually quite spacious, also nice and bright and clean. One side is mainly booths for small parties and the other side is full of big tables. The two of us waited a bit for a table and then they started offering us the option of sitting at a big table (not even sharing with others). I think that process could have been done more efficiently. We decided to order extra so as to sample more dishes. We ordered Beef Chow Gun, Singapore style Vermicelli with Curry Sauce, Fish Fillet Porridge, and Curry Beef Stew with Rice (from the lunch menu). Everything tasted delicious and authentic with good wok aroma. Their curry was really tasty, both on the Curry Beef Stew and the Singapore style Vermicelli. I was especially impressed by the Curry Beef Stew lunch special. Price was really good at $12.95; quality and quantity could not be beat. Their porridge also had good texture and a generous amount of fish. Shrimps used in the vermicelli were very big and fresh. The amount of beef in the Chow Fun was decent and the beef was tender. I just wanna say that when you walk in, the front desk stand is awkwardly located all the way in the back past their tables. Like why would you put your stand there? We walked in and had to scream past all the tables that people were already seated and eating on just to let the employees know how many guests were in our party. Overall it's mediocre Chinese food. The spare ribs bitter melon had good flavor but the pieces of ribs were not it. If you know good pieces of spare rib, you just know. The tomato egg entree had like 1 egg mixed in there. Put in more eggs plssss!!! No complaints on the salt and pepper pork chops and generous portion sizes. Parking available right behind the restaurant. It's also located right across the street from Alice Kitchen which is always busy. We were planning to go there but opted for this to give it a try. read more

Bay Garden Cafe has been a family favorite of ours for a few years now. There's convenient parking behind the restaurant and you can enter through the back where the waiting area is located. We usually come during their lunch special hours which run from 11 AM to 3 PM. We ordered the garlic chicken, fish fillet with vegetables, and lobster with yi mein noodles. The fish and broccoli were kind of plain, but the other two dishes were amazing. The garlic chicken is a must! The chicken is tender and coated in a sauce that's addicting. This was our first time here and don't understand why this restaurant got a low rating. Don't be fooled by the look of the outside of the restaurant. We were referred to this place by a friend who lives nearby here. We arrived a little after they opened and was lucky to find parking in front. As we entered, the place was already halfway filled, which means to us that the local people come here because they love the food, but just not post on Yelp. Plus, they have an "A" rating. The hostess immediately sat us down and gave us ice water to drink. Our friend advised us to order the crispy Cornish hen with red rice and ma po tofu, so we did. We were quite hungry after doing a 5k earlier in the morning, so we ordered the fish fillet with black bean sauce and crispy noodles with beef. This included two bowls of rice too. Everything looked so appetizing to eat. Our friend's recommendations were on spot! I'm not too fond of spicy food but the ma po tofu was delicious. My favorite out would be the fish fillet because the fish was so tender. Plus, the beef in the crispy noodles were soft and tender. I just wished we lived closer to try their other dishes as well. The service here was excellent too. They make sure your water is filled, and the hostess checks up on you if there's anything else you need. If you drop by here, you won't be disappointed. read more

Best lunch special menu even on a Saturday, affordable eats for great Cantonese favorites. Tea and rice was included too so you didn't have to pay more, very reasonable. Service is efficient and even at 2pm an hour before lunch special cut off time. Cooks were winding down and getting ready to have their own lunch but we still got our food out in a timely manner. It seems the community is close knit after a large table party celebration of a birthday happened, they gave their extra cake to the cook's table. It's just so fun to see customers that are like family. Food was great not too greasy which can be a problem with going out to eat. Dishes were flavorful with the right amount of salt. I just did the very Chinese and Jewish thing by having dinner here for Christmas as most of SGV is opened for business on Christmas day. Food is Hong Kong style cuisine and others spoke highly of this place. Check out the food photos and full menu that I shared. I had quite the experience here. A good one! Haha. Stopped by cause I wanted to bring some lunch for my mom. I ordered noodles and a coke. Then the lady asked if I wanted an ACTUAL drink? And she points to the special drink sign on the wall by the fish tank. Then another lady popped out to tell me about it. I was unsure cause the special drink included coconut jelly and stuff...BUT! I have been to this restaurant a few times for breakfast, and I think the breakfast is just ok (not bad, but I prefer other options. I haven't tried their lunch and dinner). Service is decent for a Chinese restaurant and the atmosphere is comfortable enough. That doesn't sound like a 5-star review, but a recent experience I had with them was so good that I am giving it 5 stars now. Earlier this month, I was looking for a venue for my baby son's birthday party. I picked this restaurant because it's right next to Primrose Park, and most of our guests prefer Chinese (or at least Asian) food. Lina (the manager?) was very easy to work with to make this reservation, and she explained everything to us in great detail. She spoke English but it's much easier to communicate in Cantonese as typical for a Chinese restaurant. Through her, I booked 4 tables and ordered the baby pig lobster combo and we were allowed to make substitutions or special requests. My mother and my aunt (who used to own a restaurant) were skeptical of the quality of the food, but we kept the reservation. The food turned out to be very good. The baby pig was roasted in-house (rather than buying it from a vendor) and super tender, and all the other food items were excellent as well. All the guests were satisfied including my mom and aunt. Finally, there's plenty of parking and it's right next to the park (why we picked this restaurant in the first place), so right after the meal, you can take the little kids to play. So I would recommend this place for parties (baby pig lobster combo) and for being kids friendly. I will try lunch and dinner there next time. read more

The crispy chicken and well seasoned pork tasted great and two eggs any style plus fresh sauté vegetables was a good combination that satisfy a very hungry person or two meals for the nibble eater. Compare to other HK cafe, their food is relatively cheap. But the choice is VERY limited. And the taste is NOT authentic HK feel. Taste more like Americanized Asian food. Not a big fan of it. I tried the egg plant in garlic sauce. This dish is COMPLETELY different than what I remembered back in HK. Mongolia beef tastes bland as well. Their dish is pretty big. But tastewise it's only mid. Service, you can forget about it. The servers are kinda mean to start with. There was a bit of commotion as of who get first and if a number is needed to wait. No one say a thing and whole bunch of people were just standing at the entrance. And the manager got upset when people asked him if we need a number. I'm pretty pleased with this new addition to my Cantonese/HK-style food repertoire (I'm from the 626 so I've really tried them all). Service here is actually very nice. We never felt rushed, or overlooked. The rest of the restaurant is very similar to your standard Cantonese spot; average cleanliness, fish tanks in the back, etc. Overall, I actually enjoyed the food here quite a bit. Food erred on the salty and oily side, but not in a way that made my stomach upset. Their salted fish, chicken, and eggplant "casserole" (read: clay pot dish) was a signature item , and one of my favorites: 4/5. The eggplant in these dishes is always par-fried, so it is oily towards the bottom, but is very flavorful. The sauteed fish fillet with ginger and scallion was also a favorite: 4/5 Lots of aromatics, made for a tasty side with rice. My least favorite dish was the chicken curry: 2/5. Not a successful attempt at HK style curry flavors. I've heard good things about the pork belly with preserved vegetables (mui choy kau yuk baby!) so I'll give it a try next time! read more

We eat here a lot because the food is pretty good. I would really recommend their shrimp and eggs because it's the one thing I get every time. The eggs are super soft and the shrimps are seasoned perfectly. The portions are pretty large for their price. The milk tea and lemon tea is unlimited. Ask for their condensed milk to make your milk tea extra creamy and sweet. Also the condensed milk is a perfect addition to their toast.
