This place is tiny and tucked away and unless you yelped it or happened to notice it while turning in to 7-eleven you might miss it! It's quiet and small, but there are a few tables. Probably not great for a big group to dine in but spacious enough for a lunch duo. Basit, I assume is the owner and is very friendly and helpful! I have only had 3 other experiences in Indian cuisine and no one has ever been able to really explain ordering options to me nearly as well as he did. I am so grateful! I was hoping to order some samosas, but he informed me that his mother hand makes them, freezes them and then they fry on demand, but she was on vacation. So I hope to try them next time. I ordered chana masala, a chickpea curry; a tandoori chicken wrapped in paratha bread (I was told the difference between chapati and paratha is oil, both are like an Indian tortilla); and a side of rice, which was a bit extra when ordering a vegetable dish. I have had chana masala only once before, this one was a little bit thinner, spicier and more savory than my first experience elsewhere (first time was sweet). It was spicy and the flavor was complex and delicious. The basmati was fragrant and al dente. The tandoori chicken wrap on paratha was a little spicy and very flavorful, a bit saltier than expected but not bad. I love the chewiness of the paratha. I could probably eat 6 pieces of the bread alone. There's a self serve water cooler which I thought was abnormal but fine by me. Seems like this place is run singlehandedly. I was told some things like the tikka (chicken on the bone) take a while to prepare so best to order in advance. I have no complaints. There is very limited seating inside and they seem to lack heating so it's also very cold. I would say this is more of a carry out place. So why the 2 stars if the chicken tikka roll is very good? Well, the owner who was cooking in the back is very rude and unprofessional. While we were eating, we can hear her ferociously yelling at her waiter. Went here for lunch one day... one hot day. The place did not have air conditioning. So, I brought my food back to the office. Lamb biryani and butter chicken for $18 something. Had enough food for three lunches and even shared some with a coworker. The butter chicken was so tasty. I loved the butter chicken. The surprise for me was the lamb biryani. The pieces of lamb were soft and tender even after reheating the next two days. There is no decor at the restaurant. Just tables and chairs and a counter. Banda Nawaz has become our go-to for biryani, samosas, and kabobs. Seriously, this is the best place in the area. Ok, to the other reviews, this is not the kind of place I'm going to bring my boss for lunch. The seating area is more of a waiting area. But this is totally the place I'm going to call for the best Indo-Pak takeout in the 630 area. The biryani is fantastic, to the point where we've had multiple friends and family ask where the store is to be able to get the biryani themselves (or perhaps, just to have us order it for when they're in town). The chicken samosas are addictive, with flaky shells and a great filling. And the kabobs are just so fresh it's incredible. For those hating on the service, I leave you with this anecdote. I was ordering a tray of biryani for a ton of guests coming in. When I placed it back on the counter ledge to sign my credit card receipt, it fell to the ground and opened up, dumping much of it on the floor. Mind you, I had already paid so I was devastated. The owner simply asked if I could wait 10 minutes, had the cook warm up some more biryani from the pot it had just been cooked in, and cleaned it. He didn't even blink or consider charging me. Banda Nawaz makes pretty good carry out Pakistani food, such as biryani. I think that its ambience for dine-in is barely acceptable, but it would not appeal to many. Overall, Banda Nawaz is good. The menu selection is relatively small and simple, but then the kitchen, and the restaurant's storefront footprint itself, is quite small. On any given day certain menu entrees will be featured and available, while others will not be. The person behind the counter, who takes your order, will let you know what is being cooked and offered that day. Typical items include parathas, biryanis, masoor dal, chana masala, baigan bharta, bhindi gosht, chili chicken, chicken quorma, shish kebabs. The meats, chicken, beef and lamb, are halal. Everything is tasty. My favorite items are the boneless chicken biryani, baigan bharta and bhindi gosht. Each entree comes with a very simple salad, virtually a lettuce garnish, seasoned with a chili-yogurt chutney. The food is pretty tasty, and decent enough quality for fast food. Rice pudding is good. The other daily sweets are not to my taste. Prices are very cheap, in the range of what would expect to spend for a fast-food carry out meal. However, everything is ala carte. For example, if you want chapatis, that will cost extra. The menu structure targets the customer who wants a single-entree meal. Most drinks, and many desserts, are in the glass stand up cooler under the TV. The customer helps himself, then pays. Ambiance and decor. Well, Banda Nawaz operates from a storefront in a struggling backwater strip mall one block south of Roosevelt Road, just behind (north of) Versailles apartments. The mall's tenants are 7-Eleven, a liquor store, a laundromat, and then, at the far western end, Banda Nawaz, with its 25 foot wide store. The store might once have been a laundry. Imagine a small space where the laundry's customers waited. That would be where the restaurant has it half-dozen tables. The counter where clothes would have been brought in and picked up would be where the restaurant takes orders and brings them out for pick up from the kitchen. The shop's storefront is almost all window, so the restaurant gets lots of outside light. If you eat in the store, you will be acutely aware of how small it is. Your table is adjacent to virtually every other table there. The loud TV is on continuously, tuned to a Paki station or to Al-Jezeera. By US standards, the tables, counter, the entire shop, will feel somewhat less than 100% clean to most. As you place your order you can peer into the kitchen, which is small and messy. The bathroom is in back, and you go right through the kitchen on your way there, so you can see the kitchen first hand up close. You will walk gingerly to avoid slipping on an imaginary patch of grease on the kitchen's tile floor. All of this adds up to a less than pleasant ambiance for dine-in. Service is adequate, nothing special one way or the other. Other: the restaurant stays open during Ramadan, but functions with a skeleton staff. On Friday afternoons, and probably at other specific prayer times, the shop may close down for a little while. In summary, I can recommend Banda Nawaz for inexpensive, simple carry out Paki food. The orders are well suited to individuals looking for individual meals. Everything is a la carte, but most customers will be looking for the entrees only anyway. Service is adequate. The ambience is not up to a pleasant dine-in experience for most. Overall, Banda Nawaz is good. There is a sister branch shop in Bolingbrook that the owners opened two years ago, in 2009. Yes, the food is very cheap but I think it should be edible. I went last week & called & complained about my bland chicken biryani. I asked if they were using a new cook because I've ordered this over the summer and it wasn't bad. He told me no. I told him he should taste what was being served because it had only been 20 minutes since I'd left. He said I'll check now and hung up. No goodbye, sorry for the bad food. The biryani here is pretty good. That's all I've had. It's a total hole in the wall, but not in a bad way. The menus are written on whiteboards with dry erase markers. I'm guessing they rotate the menu The eating area is very small. Very similar to something you'd expect in Chicago. Picture the front area of a dry cleaner, that's the size of the front. I've ordered from this place a ton of times and for almost 5 years. It use to be one of my good take out place until recently. Sometimes there's this young guy who charges you as per his own rate. And sometimes, there's this new woman who messes your order every time. The old owners (I believe) are rarely seen but they still do a great job. The new people are terribly bad and that would be an understatement. The food in last few years have become a hit or miss and in last few months it is mostly a miss. They've increased prices but haven't updated that on their website or the menu card which in my opinion is wrong. They don't give receipts and accept only cash. I've been fine with cash only, no customer service, take out only behaviour. I didn't get anything I ordered. Make sure you check the package before leaving, or else they won't refund or make up for their mistakes. Also it is cash only (something else not mentioned when I ordered) despite there clearly being a sign that they accept money transfers from your bank account and have the names of the Banks listed (mine was one of them), but then was told cash only. I asked about the grilled tilapia. I was told it would be 2 pieces. I only got 1. I got a different curry and a different vegetable curry than the ones I ordered (ironically suggested by Staff.) Yes this place is definitely Cheap and delicious. Especially the lamb biryani and the samosas. The lamb biryani was very flavorful, seasoned very nicely and the meat was good too. Overall it was delicious. Their kebabs had a weird consistency, a bit on the softer side. But only the beef was good, the chicken... not so much. The samosas were very good, especially when it was freshly fried. The skin was so crunchy and the filling, like everything meat based, is good. Too bad the person taking our order doesn't give a $h!t about the non middle eastern/indian customers (he's very respectful to others and to us he doesn't even look at us, LOL) and the two times we've been there, there was always something missing (only beef, no samosas, no chicken, etc etc). Also one time we did get samosas (delicious) one of my samosas was cold in the middle, the same visit one of the seekh kebab was half raw in the middle and another time instead of chili chicken rice he gave us just plain rice. It's a pretty good take-out place. I've been there atleast 7-8 times. There's barely enough place to seat, like 4 or 5 tables at the most. The food is pretty good..more towards Pakistani style of dishes. It's like having Gareeb Nawaz in the burbs..except you don't have to drive as far. Specially try their goat or lamb curry with chillies..they usually make that on Fridays. And I like the fact they can make it spicier on request. This is the true "hole in the wall". The atmosphere is definitely third world and English-only speakers may be the minority- unless you're the only customers. That being said, I LOVE this place. The food is great and the staff is polite. Just don't ask the owner to try to spice you out. Omg...my mom's friend recommended this place because of their amazing vegetable biryani and I'm glad she did. Don't be fooled by the small restaurant, because the workers there are so sweet and will help recommended something that accommodates you.
