So I tell my friend that there's this awesome Thai place that I'm always in the mood for somewhere in Nu'uanu. He tells me "well it better not be Bangkok Chef" (mainly because we were already at Manoa Marketplace. We drive to Nu'uanu to try and find this place... Great! ... it's Bangkok Chef. Besides the fact that I didn't know there were two locations, I also didn't know that the place gives a pretty good amount of food (not having been to either location in about a year). FOOD: The Thai food here is pretty great and I look at it as a sort of "fast-food" Thai joint. Not that the food is made oily or rushed, but for the quality and portion size, the food gets out of the kitchen pretty quickly. My favorite (call me boring) is the Pad Thai with Chicken and Tofu (& Shrimp sometimes, add $4). You also CANNOT go wrong with a little dessert I'd like to call HEAVEN, but it's 'legal', 'birth name' is Mango Ice Cream and Sticky Rice. It really is the best and I believe that's why I come back to this place. PRICE: Not bad at all! Approximately $10/pp for an entree and possibly a dessert. TIPS: -definitely try the dessert menu, it's a MUST -feel free to take-out, it's great to sit in the park, on the sand, or at home with this meal (you may feel tired after eating some of the overstuffed plates) -try both locations! Bangkok Chef is a great place to go if you want a lot of food at a great price! It's located in Manoa valley, with not a lot of parking. It was be more of a casual place and the food is served in take out containers. But they serve so much food! This is a great place to go with a group of friends you can order two things and there would be enough food for at least three people. I ordered the spicy thai noodles with spring roles and they were delicious. I had enough food left over for lunch tomorrow! They also have great specials, my boyfriend ordered eggplant with shrimp noodles! You can also order out as well so if you want Thai food one night while watching Netflix I would go here! They were fast, and super polite! They had lots of seating inside, and fountain drinks, The place is also BYOB, which is nice! Again it's a super causal place, which I love. You don't have to get super dressed up to go here and just enjoy yourself with friends. It would also be a great family place! so bring the kids! read more

I admire the people who work here. Sometimes, they are so slammed, I don't know how they can stand it. On the day my husband and I were there last, they were not slammed and were very efficient at getting our order of green curry and sticky rice to us. (We shared because we weren't very hungry.) As we ate, a crowd of people came in, and the workers continued in their pleasant and efficient manner. When the food came, it was just so flavorful! It reminded me of why I love this restaurant. The green curry is so good that if you blindfolded me and put the green curry of 3 restaurants in front of me, I could identify this restaurant's curry. Yes, it's that good! Even their cocoa tapioca is fabulous! When you put the first spoonful into your mouth, you will automatically smile, so don't put too much into your mouth lest a chunk fall out and embarrass you! The only reason this restaurant doesn't have 5 stars is its atmosphere. It's very much like a school cafeteria--just with really great food and good service. Ah, the chef. For those nights when you have a six pack of beer and are curled up beneath a Banyan tree in a space blanket--the chef really hits the spot. I know it's only average Thai food, and they use those dried pizza chili's for spice, and they have stacks of Jehovah Witness magazines on the corner table, but for 2 entrees under $13 in Hawaii (finally, Manoa feels like a college town), I really don't want to hear people complain. The curries are above average and the pad Thai disappointing but again, it's Honolulu and you just paid the same price you would have in Thailand. So eat up friendo. read more

I think they changed cooks because I was very disappointed last night I ordered my favorite basil chicken it had no flavor....? I was like what happened plus the girl on the register told my the card part on her register only work sometimes and asked my to pay cash .... but a man from the back came out and rang up someone else on the other register and he used a card ??? Wth and to top it all off o told her I thought I ordered ala cart with no rice because I ordered 2 fried rice but she goes no get rice so I said ok I prefer sticky rice and she says get regular too late.... I going back to Nuuanu the food there is at least consistent or maybe time to look someplace else like maybe to Thai for I heard good stuff about them The portions have gotten smaller but I can understand that if the food tastes good!!! We used to come here quite often. We'd always order spring rolls, pad si you, pad thai, eggplant chicken & yellow chicken curry. I never had problems here. If I wrote a review 2 years ago, I would've gave them five stars. Customer service is good. They're really nice here, but I don't know what happened to the food. The taste and quality is so inconsistent now. Last time I ordered pad si you and not only did they give less for take out, but it also tasted horrible. The spring rolls are still good and so is the eggplant chicken and yellow chicken curry. The sticky rice was okay the first time we ordered it, but this past time, it was HORRIBLE! It was super dry. It literally looked like rice that had been sitting outside for a long time & it was all dried up. The yellow chicken curry helped make it taste better. If it weren't for the decent prices and good customer service, I probably wouldn't come back here. Food is a hit or miss. Depends on who's cooking I guess. read more

The awesomeness of the Nuuanu Bangkok Chef has only sorta made its way to Manoa. Here you will get solid Thai food, but without the "ooh wow!" factor. I haven't had anything bad here, just not anything superb. The best of what I've had is the pad thai and the chicken with cashews. The curries are OK. Hard to beat the prices, though, especially for Manoa. You can fill up and take home leftovers for less than $10. read more

My son has baseball practice at Manoa District Park so on our way home we decided to try this place. My kids were not at all pleased with the selection of food, a little too exotic for their taste. My son ordered the spring rolls and they were pretty tasty. My daughter had the fried chicken, which was somewhat dry and not as tasty as I would like. I tried the Thai Green Curry. I am usually not a fan of usual curry so I decided to be a bit adventurous for once. I have to admit that it was really really good. Spicy, and minty, and creamy all wrapped up in one. I was pleasantly surprised. The establishment is really clean the staff nice. They brought my kids free fruit punch, which I thought was going above and beyond. When did they change over to 100% styrofoam?? I held my tongue at the restaurant - it's not the fault of those who work there. If I wanted take-out, I would've ordered take-out. Instead, I had dine-in take-out. I personally hate styrofoam, which makes it hard for me to eat much take-out. but there's actually different kinds of styrofoam, and this is the cheapo kind that squeaks just by looking at it. Food overall didn't change, except that the spring rolls seemed to have less taste and more junk filler, more mushy insides. Maybe I'm more upset because I included the tip at the register only to find out I would be serving myself and bussing my own table. I wanted to leave all the trash on the table, but my wife wouldn't let me. I also wanted to take back 75¢ from the tip to use for a refill. I really hope the one by Home Depot-Costco hasn't changed. Haven't tried the original Nuuanu location only because I don't feel like scrambling for that one parking space. We won't be going back to the Manoa site though unless management goes back to the old ways for dining in with real dishes. I'd give it 1 star of the changes, 3 for the food (4 if the spring rolls hadn't changed either). read more

This is a nice little lunch spot, set up more like a higher-end fast-food joint. You order at the counter and find your own table, but they do bring you your food when it's ready. The selection is large (about 30 dishes), and the food is solid. It's not the best Thai food on the island, but I've gone back a few times and been happy with everything so far. read more

This review is solely based on the House Delight. If you've ever had the time to sit and eat in the restaurant, you highly likely have seen the picture of the House Delight sitting atop your table. "An Unforgettable Experience," says the really poor quality picture with a terrible angle. Boyfriend has always sworn to order it one day, and only did so the other night for the first time. According to the terrible picture, the ice cream is an orangey color. "Maybe it's Thai Tea ice cream!" What came out wasn't what I expected but it was so delicious, I didn't care. It is mango ice cream sitting on top of sweet, warm, green sticky rice and sprinkled with peanuts. The cold ice cream with the warm rice is amazing. The House Delight really is an unforgettable experience. DO IT. read more

I've had two completely different experiences here. First one, was not very good. I ordered chicken pad si you. The noodles and veggies were good, but I wasn't really feeling the chicken. It had a weird kick to it. However, the second time was amazing. Decided to try it again but go for something basic--pad thai. Everything was good. This is certainly a "fast food" thai place. So good because it's SOOOOO cheap! I've eaten at both locations, and don't find too much of a difference in terms of taste. The only thing I can really review here is the panag chicken curry because that's usually all I order. I feel like there is a lot of taste in the panag curry and there is a good amount of spice, which adds to the flavor without being too hot. I'll agree that it's not the best tasting thai food, but for the price, I really think it's a good choice. If I ever get something other than the panag chicken curry, I'll definitely review it, but don't hold your breath. read more

The place has only been open a week and already I've eaten there twice. I had the tart, piquant shrimp salad with long rice, mango, and lots of shallots and onions and pad raumit (tofu veggie stir fry) on Tuesday and rad na (wide noodles with gravy) on Thursday. Everything tasted great, especially the rad na, but on Tuesday, as soon as I finished eating, I felt extremely nauseated and sick. Today I ate the rest of the pad raumit for lunch and again I got so nauseated afterward I could hardly keep the food down. I'm not sick and the rest of the week I was fine with whatever I ate, so I can't help but think it was the food. Also, on Thursday I had to wait over half an hour for my noodles, so make sure you have the time to eat there. I spent most of my lunch break waiting. This location does not have a grocery corner like the original Nuuanu Ave location. The Manoa store is purely a restaurant. Also, the workers here are all Chinese, not Thai. The food tastes the same, though. read more

I go to school at UH - so finding yummy places to eat nearby is important. Especially since I'm an architecture student who sometimes has a hard time finding the time to eat during intense deadlines! Jordan took me to Bangkok Chef during our lunch break for the first time and I will never willingly eat there again. There are so many other delicious Thai restaurant options. The space is descent. You walk in, place your order, find a table, & wait for you order to be called. I recommend buying a fountain drink, the water cups are the incredibly small kind you put in your bathroom - so don't plan on doing spicy unless you would like to walk to the fountain drink dispenser nonstop. The only additional spice they have available is sriracha. Which I needed because my phad thai was bland and not spicy at all. I normally love putting crushed peanuts in my phad thai... but I did not want to make it more dry. The spring rolls were good, not the best... but still fresh, hot, & crispy. We also ordered the green curry which comes with jasmine rice? I'll remember to stick to STICKY :] It was not spicy either, mediocre. It lacks flavor. It tasted very different from any other green curry I've tried - in a bad way. I'll be sure to try out OTHER restaurants in the area next time! read more

Bangkok chef is the cheap hole in the wall plate lunch type of place. They manage to have very decent Thai food (I like their yellow chicken curry the best, but their pad thai and chicken satay are very good too). Victim of their success, the prices went up, and the curry got watered down (used to be super creamy). Still good though. Their mango ice cream on coconut sticky rice is good, but does not equal the dessert they inspired from: same with fresh mango. yum ! Bangkok chef is basically the place I go when I am in a hurry yet starving or when I have $5 to end the month: one plate lunch gives me two meals :) but beware: sticky rice does not conserve well (gets really hard after a day) so get normal rice instead if you are planning on saving for later. They are pretty fast to serve you and always friendly. The parking is usually crowded though. Trick: call beforehand, order whatever you want. When you arrive, it is ready waiting for you, or almost. Speeds up the process. They also have a small grocery corner that has the best curry paste I ever tried. Dont' get the junk at Safeway or even Daiei, their curry paste is the best if you want to cook your own Thai dish. read more

What started as a love affair in Nuuanu continued to a hideaway location in the entrance to Manoa Valley. I could try to count the number of times I've been to this (no longer "new") location, but I am betting it's in the 15+ range, and there's a reason I keep coming back. The food is no longer quite as plentiful as it once was, and I swear the prices keep inching up every time I go. I also get a little perturbed as well by the fact that they want to make you pay for refills from the soda fountain. (Really, people? Really?!) But, the food is still every bit as tasty as ever, with a pretty authentic Thai flavor and flair. I've sampled all the curries, and though I can't choose a favorite, they're all completely satisfying. We always get pad thai for the 5-year old, and she gobbles it down too. The soups are also always delicious. Tangy, spicy, and just the right amount of mushrooms and meaty goodness. The only miss--which isn't completely their fault--was the time we ordered tofu sate' for our vegan friends. That bland, ultra-waste of calories and stomach space was proof that tofu doesn't belong in everything. *shudder* Stay away from that misstep, and you're in the money. Oh, and save room for the mango ice cream with candied peanuts over sticky rice. While it sounds like the strangest recipe ever, it is such the perfect blend of salty and sweet, my stomach growls at the mere memory of it. read more

I am tired of eating my own cooking during this pandemic. Thank goodness for establishments like Bangkok Chef. I frequent the one in Manoa. My favorite dishes are the panang and green curry, stir fried long rice w/ pork, Pad Ki Mao with tofu and green papaya salad. The prices are reasonable and the service is quick. I call to order and in 10 minutes time, the food is hot and fresh, ready for pickup. I like the takeout containers they use as well since they are sturdy and reusable. The pork in the dishes are sliced very thin so they are very tender. I am also grateful that the chicken in the green curry is not all white meat which can be dry. The seasoning on all the dishes are on-mark and the heat quotient is just right. Thank you Bangkok Chef for staying open for people like me who are not the best home cooks. read more

This was a perfect 'last supper' for Hawaii. Super cheap, 4 of us ate for $30, which included 2 entrees, 2 thai iced teas, spring rolls and summer rolls. We ordered the yellow chicken curry. Not spicy at all, i am a total wuss for spicy food and all the vegetables and chicken were cooked perfectly! We ordered it with the brown rice, which was also cooked well. The thai iced tea was SO GOOD!!! Both the spring and summer rolls were the shit. I am glad I got to try this place before i left!!! read more
