I remember when this place used to be the original location of Peking Tokyo. When it first changed to Bangkok Tokyo I had some hope, as I actually tasted fish sauce in some of the dishes. But this quickly went away and they turned into just another bland strip mall poor Asian restaurant. I had not been there for years but last week I went with a co-worker when we were desperate for a drink and some food. We had some sushi and after begging for the sake menu some drinks. The sake was fine, but I had had that brand before and was happy with it. But the yellow tail was horrible, the tuna tasteless and most of the other items had warm/hot sushi rice, the fish was starting to cook! Now, I should give one star but the only think that saved them was I ordered sweet shrimp and often you get the heads fried to go along with the tails. I asked about this, and the waitress said they don't do that. But she came back a few minutes later and said they could do it and did I want them. I answered yes, but while the shrimp heads were nice and crunchy it was under seasoned and the tails were put on more of the hot rice and had started to cook by the time I got them. do yourself a favor, try any of the other sushi restaurants in the area, most are better than this. Ordered takeout and it was the worse Chinese food I've ever had. The inside of the spring roll was mush and tasted awful I only ate 2 bites. My son ordered sesame chicken and it tasted horrible he had 2 bites and wouldn't eat any more. I tasted his and spit it out it was that bad. He soon was sick from the little he ate. I will never go there again. I'd give it zero stars if I could. My advice is to go across the street to China Village or even the Rice Bowl in the same shopping center. read more

Plenty spicy - we ordered medium - so if you don't want it fairly spicy, order mild and you'll still have loads of flavor. Service was good. We'll return when out that way again. read more

The menu has too many items, there was just page after page after page and I had no idea what to order. But I took a wild stab at it and was spectacularly pleased with every bit of the food! Five stars: "Chef's Choice" for sushi - Each piece was delicious and we cleaned up every bite. Tuna, egg, kani, whitefish, and something unidentified. Would certainly let them choose again! Spring Rolls - crisp flaky outside, fresh, flavorful ingredients fried crisp in clean oil. Wish we'd ordered 4 instead of two. Pad Bamee (Seafood Combination) - Was absolutely delicious with a flavorful oyster sauce. Meat and vegetables were well prepared, all tasted fresh and were cooked to perfection. What a pleasant surprise to find a good sushi restaurant in a strip mall in Bradenton! Obviously, locals have discovered this gem as the restaurant was pretty busy on a week night. Price is reasonable and portions are more than fair. Even the sashimi pieces were generous. The sushi was very fresh and tasty too. A+! My wife was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. We do our own sushi at home. Bangkok Tokyo is one of her, and mine, favorite restaurants to visit for sushi. It's always fresh, and the slices of fish are always of a good size, compared to other sushi restaurants in our area. The Thai dishes are also really good, one of our favorites is the seafood combo with ginger sauce. Furthermore, the service is great, and they have made some nice renovations to the seating and decor since we started going there in December of 2015 when we moved from Annapolis MD to Florida. It was Christmas Day, 2019. If other restaurants were open, our party of 4 would have gotten up and left after sitting for over an hour before even receiving a menu. I had reservations at 6:00PM and weren't even approached by a waitress until I stopped the poor overworked busgirl and demanded to speak to the owner. Another 10 minutes passed, the owner came out to take our orders. No apology, just what do you want? The hot and sour soup was a half bowl of watered down broth with barely any visible ingredients. I asked for noodles, as she brusquely dropped them in front of us. She curtly yelled back, "No noodles" and walked away. When my greasy overpriced Shrimp Tempura arrived, I had to look for the shrimp hidden under a mound of tempura fried onions, zucchini sticks and carrots. There were 5 small shrimp. I said overpriced because for $17.95 I expected at least 6 large shrimp. The dipping sauce was tasteless and had difficulty cutting the heavy greasy tempura. The Thai Spring Rolls looked nice at first but they also were full of oil. Their accompanying Thai Sweet Chili sauce was nothing more than duck sauce out of a jar. In summary it was the worst experience I've had in years and will never return to this restaurant. I should mention also that other tables did get up and leave out of frustration. read more

While I did enjoy eating there the first time I was there - the following three times were not good. I ordered food online to pick up and when I got there, there was no one to greet me. I waited 8 minutes for someone to even come out. During that time, I called their phone 3 times and no one picked up. Someone finally came out and asked if I was here to pick up. I said yes and they walked away. I had to ask for fortune cookies on more than one occasion to get them which used to be a norm when you ordered food. When I got home, two vegan orders had chicken. I called back, no answer. I called and explained I asked for vegan and vegetarian and he said no. I clearly did as I have been vegetarian for 10 years of my life, this is nothing new to me. He then told me I was wrong and needed to say no meat. Not just "vegetable/ vegetarian". I told him I could either get a refund or come in and pick up the two vegetarian options I ordered. He ignored me and hung up. I then went back and he argued with me again. If you're a sushi lover then here's the place to go. Set at at sushi bar and James will make you a special treat at the beginning of your visit. The specialty rolls on the board are all excellent. My personal favorite is a crunchy spicy tuna roll volcano'd. A couple of years ago they made lunch time more affordable for us there by adding a $9.00 lunch menu which allows you to pick two rolls from a select group of rolls + you get a ginger salad and soup. They also added a $6.95 lunch menu which has a selection of curries + soup & ginger salad, quite the value. As a result of the new lunch menus three of us from work eat there all the time. Aye here the other night and it was so yummy we might go there again tonight!! We started with health rolls, which is their version of a fresh roll but I didn't see it on the menu. They were good and the peanut dipping sauce had a little kick to it. Hubby had pork egg foo young and the gravy was DELISH!! Probably the best I've ever had. I had Pad Bamee which was also really good. Nice brown sauce and lots of veggies and chicken. Our daughter had the orange chicken, the sauce was really good and they accommodated us by swapping out the peppers for broccoli but the chicken was so crispy it was a little tough to chew. Bangkok Tokyo is a rare gem in this area because it offers Sushi, Thai, Chinese, & Japanese style food. While it's not particularly excellent at any one thing (hence 4 stars vs 5), it's solidly good at many things--not an easy feat for a chef to pull off, I must say! The restaurant is also quiet & peaceful, which is comforting--until a loud couple or group gets seated next to you. That can either be annoying or downright comedic. My personal favorites are the curries, but I will warn fellow Yelpers that the "heat" level is not always consistent. I do not know if this has to do with different chefs on different nights, but be aware lest you're sensitive. Considering all the big pricy restaurants that have recently come into the area, it's a true treat to find this small local gem that has something for everyone's palate. read more

In fact, if you sit at the bar he'll make a complimentary sashimi salad that is top notch. There's really nothing major to complain about but there's also nothing exciting to say either. For such a heavily decorated restaurant and strong incense in the air, I kind of expected the food to be much more ethnic. The menu was more Asian fusion with very typical Chinese dishes like orange chicken, fried wonton, etc... Nothing you can't find at any other Chinese restaurant for about half the price and twice the amount. They are a little bit on the pricey side to me for the quality of the food. That being said, Bradenton is not exactly poppin' with culture so this place kind of serves it's purpose- a seemingly ethnic restaurant for locals. It would be a shame not to share our experience from this restaurant. Very good from start to finish. The wife and I came here around 4:22 pm and thought it was closed since the sign said open again at 4:30 pm for dinner but good for us they were nice and let us sit in a booth. We've tried other places in the Brandon area for sushi and Chinese food and really haven't been all that satisfied until coming here. The staff was very friendly and came to our table asking if we were ok. I know that we were the only ones there since I'm guessing not too many people would come in when they see the sign outside but they were friendly no less. We ordered sushi to begin our dinner and boy were they fairly portioned for the price. We ordered spicy tuna and Philadelphia rolls and a a roll had 8 pieces each for a price of around $5 which really is not bad considering some places do $1 a piece. After the sushi we tried out the general tso and pineapple fried rice and it was very good (I highly recommend the pineapple fried rice). The server checked on us often as stated before and gave us our bill in a timely fashion. Overall experience I have no complaints and will definitely be back again. read more

My wife and I have lived in the Bradenton area for over one year and have had the opportunity to try a number of Asian restaurants. Bangkok Tokyo is easily one of the best in the area and have a decent selection of traditional Chinese and Thai dishes. I specifically enjoy their Chicken Pad Thai and Krab Rangoon. My wife on the other hand is a huge fan of their Mongolian Beef and Fried Spring Rolls are also worth trying. The wait staff is always very friendly and the restaurant is very clean. Definitely worth a visit if you are anywhere near Bradenton. On a side note, one of our waitresses recently saved me a decent amount of money and trouble. I accidentally left my Maui Jim sunglasses behind during one of our visits. During the next visit, she recognized my wife and brought us the glasses. It was a huge and very welcomed surprise. I had no idea where I had left them and hadn't checked with the restaurant. Needless to say, she got a nice tip that day. read more

My husband and I have been coming to this establishment since 2008. Best sushi in manatee county. The service is absolutely amazing. Staff is friendly and inviting. The atmosphere is warm. You have to try their Thai Tea and Plum Wine. The seating arrangements is excellent for large groups. Great for celebrations and family/friends outings.
