We've been exploring Thai cuisine around the city lately.  It's definitely our go-to comfort food, especially during the summer. While we were in the Marpole area, we dropped by Bann Thai Kitchen at Granville & 70th. It's a small, cozy restaurant with a welcoming yellow interior that instantly gives you that warm Thai vibe. The food leaned more toward Thai fusion, which made for some fun and interesting flavours. We tried a handful of dishes, and a few stood out to us: * Gaeng Kua Sapparod - A red curry with pineapple and Thai basil. We ordered medium spicy level, it was vibrant, and fragrant. It had that nice balance of sweet and savoury that we love in Thai curries. * Khao Soi - Egg noodles in a creamy curry broth, served with chicken drumsticks. The drumsticks were on the dryer side, but we love the flavour of the curry broth. Very flavourful! * Kor Moo Yang - Grilled pork jowls with a spicy Isan-style dipping sauce. This was easily one of the highlights. The pork jowls were tender and smoky, and the dipping sauce packed a punch. Highly recommend! The presentation was beautiful across the board. Every dish was vibrant with its colourful ingredients. So appetizing! The portion sizes were fair, and prices were quite reasonable. Some suggestions for room improvement. Some dishes could use more depth or boldness in flavour, especially for those used to traditional Thai spice levels. Overall, a great little spot for Thai-inspired eats in the area. I came here with a friend. We had an appointment to go to later, a few blocks away from here and ended up here for lunch cuz...well a lot of other places nearby seemed to be closed for some reason. This place was open, and the fact that they had lunch specials was very attractive. Food was just OK. Nothing to write home about. Definitely wouldn't recommend coming here if you're looking for an authentic Thai meal. My friend ordered the Pad Thai lunch special. She said there was a lot of ketchup in her dish. Not authentic. In all fairness though, the menu even says "Canadian Version", so at least they're upfront about it and not trying to pass it off as authentic Thai food. I got lured in by the $7.95 lunch special sign on the sidewalk. There's only one dish on the lunch special menu that $7.95. Fortunately for me, who doesn't eat meat, this was a Vegetarian dish. It's a Mixed Vegetables wok fried dish with white rice, and garlic. It was quite heavy on the garlic and a pretty generous serving. Not bad but not something I need to try again. If I happened to be in this area again and needed an affordable lunch, I might come back here again. Otherwise...no need to come back here. Food was just OK. Bann Thai is the latest in my discoveries along Granville in the Marpole area. Thai food is extremely popular in Vancouver. The other locations closer to the mainstream crowds are usually booked up and in my opinion, not all that they are jacked up to be. This spot is off the main stomping trails of YVR'ers and as a Yelper, you have to intro new places. The place is pretty spartan in decor but as many places have... they got that obligatory greenish wall of foliage and neon tubing. Ahhhh... IG-worthy is such a trend. BUT... all the decor aside, no place will survive unless the food is spot on. Came in late afternoon and their lunch special basically runs until 5pm (me thinks). My standard order when going to a new Thai spot is Green Curry Chicken. If they can to that right, I'm good to return for other meals. The curry was a little more runny than I like it, however, it did have good flavours. I'm in the boat where if it's green curry - they really should be using the green peppers that gives it the name - so basically punch my taste buds and don't apologize for it. This was not that. I think many places still are timid with spices as it would put off some of the public (you know who you are) and that's too bad. It's 2025 and we are all ready for flavour and taste adventure. The service is friendly, or basically the one woman show was good. A good 3.5 stars for this place - will come back and perhaps try their main dishes and not the lunch specials next time. Tried out Bann Thai for a Saturday dinner. They're a few doors down from Tad's Sporting Goods. Eight large tables that are oddly sized. Lunch menu (11:00am to 4:00pm) has some cheap options. Beware, zero spice level to their dishes. - Thai iced tea ($4.25) - touch sweet but nice - Jasmine rice ($4.50 large) - Moo ping ($10.95 for 5) - grilled pork skewers were tender. Nice char - Gaeng kua sapparod ($15.95) - first time trying this type of curry. Liked the pineapple chunks, basil and lemongrass notes - Red curry ($15.95) - typical red curry - Pad thai boran ($16.95) - standard fare - Eggplants & basil ($15.95) - wanted more eggplant but good garlic-chili sauce Nothing that'll blow you away. 3.5 stars. read more

Their Thai food was very authentic and super delicious. I wish I could try more dishes. My husband and I ordered a grilled beef salad, dry noodles with pork and yellow curry with chicken. Everything was so good that we kept eating and eating. The service was great. Our server was very friendly and polite and smiled with us. She asked us to try the mango sticky rice next time. The ambience and interior design matched the Thai theme and the restaurant was running Thai music. We came here for dinner on a Thursday night after 8pm. There were not too many customers. I hope their business will run well and more customers will come here for lunch and dinner. Their lunch combos are quite attractive. I would recommend the restaurant to do more social media or online advertising, so more people know about the restaurant. read more

I went here for lunch. I ordered the pad Tie . The portion size was ok but it only has 3 skimpy shrimp . The whole dish could be made for $2.50 . And they charged 13.89. Definitely not a good deal .How do you attract customers when you want to be so stingy with your food. For some reason in PNW, I never see holy basil used for Pad Kra Prow, despite the holy basil being its namesake. Everywhere I look, it's usually Thai basil. I also usually find the Pad Kra Prow up here is very saucy, whereas I prefer a drier Northern style. Bann Thai's menu listed holy basil as an ingredient, so I was eager to try. Truthfully, I couldn't tell you if it was indeed holy basil or Thai basil, but this style is better (my preferred style) than most of the Pad Kra Prow in PNW. It's just a little sweet, not very spicy. You might be able to ask to kick it up a notch. Egg is fried pretty expertly. It took me some time to get home with the takeaway, I was surprised that the yolk was still runny. I can't resist a mango sticky rice. Solid as well. Coconut milk is good, rice is DELISH, and mangoes were good too. Tender and not too sweet. The staff is very kind and patient. I did online order and they called me when my order was ready for pick up early. It's quite a small shop, seems very local. If you're keen to try something new, please keep Bann Thai in your thoughts! read more

Up front I should admit that I am half Thai; my mum is Thai from central Thailand, so I know what real Thai food is supposed to be and taste like, also when comparing to the food I eat when I go to Thailand. Last weekend we went to this restaurant because I was in the area to watch the Canucks-Oilers game at a friend's house on 68th, but, to be honest, I found the food here not really like genuine or authentic Thai food as I have eaten in Thailand since I was a little boy. Maybe it is OK for Western people, many of whom probably don't know what real Thai food is supposed to taste like and who don't normally like spicy food. It was OK, but the food at the other Thai restaurant up the street and across the way, has like real Thai food and genuinely authentic and tastes much better. This was more like Chinese food dressed up with Thai spices.is The service here is the same, and quite friendly, too, but nothing to write home about. The thing that bothered me was they kept trying to get me to write a 5-star review on Google reviews (we were asked 3 times if we would do it for them), which I found rather tacky, although I have experienced this tactic a lot in Richmond and in north Surrey, too. The chicken satay was rather dry and had a funny, slightly bitter flavour (sort of like maybe too much turmeric???) that I couldn't recognize; it needed a lot of sauce to go down. The pat thai was a little too gooey for my taste and I think they use ketchup instead of sweet tamarind for the sauce. True pat thai supposed to be done in real Thai style using only sweet tamarind; it certainly didn't taste like it had tamarind and there were only a few small shrimp instead of prawns. In Thailand, it is a sacrilege to use ketchup in pat thai. The phat grapao beef could have had a stronger basil flavouring; it was not very noticeable, and it was not really spicy-hot like true Thai pat grapao. I thought it was expensive for what we got and the quality of the food, but anyway it is edible and OK. I am yet not sure if I will be back. read more

I always come here for Thai food mainly because I work in the area. I've been to Thailand probably annually, and most recently last month. I find the food here is great! The staff is from Issan (North East Thailand), so maybe that's why the food is not quite the same as Bangkok. However, they definitely scaled the spice down, which fits many of my friends' tastes. I recall I tried Issan food in Thailand, and those are super spicy to me even when I ordered Mild. The pork jaw... yum yum.. better than Terminal 21 on Asoke! read more
