My last experience here wasn't great, but it's been a few years. This place flew one of my radar since then so I decided to try it tonight and I was very pleased. I nibbled on the scallion pancake (good), green beans (good and super umami), tea salad (super vinegary and yummy as I remembered it), vegan bao (didn't care for these... strange flavor), and the best surprise of the night - mixed sauce noodle. I remember not liking this dish the last time I had it, but tonight it was awesome. The first bite caused my sinuses to open up and my face to start going numb. There were plentiful veggies as well, which is important to me. Leafy kale, fermented cabbage, scallions, and peanuts. I slept on this place for too long and wanted to rectify my last review. I could taste the over the counter ingredients, so I have doubts that the sauce was house-made. There are few places for authentic Chinese food in NOLA, so I give them credit for opening a spot. If you like a funky stripped down place that is a bit difficult to spot and has all the ambiance and decoration of a laundromat then this is the place for you. Walked there last week in the heat and humidity. Most folks seemed to be getting their food to go but we ate outside under a canopy in the somewhat disheveled back yard and it was fine as there was a ceiling fan back there. While they bring your food out to you it is up to you to get knives, forks, napkins etc. The hostess was very friendly and informative and the food was first rate. The lone chef was very businesslike in the tiny kitchen but he obviously is very talented. Great value. Will definitely return next time we are in New Orleans. Hopefully by then they would have hired some nearby high school kids to paint murals on the blank walls! read more

Try not to go during peak meal times since the seating Indoors is super limited unless you like some swampy butt with your meal (granted we went during the summer season). Little, delicious spot that does, you guessed it, both bao and noodle really well!! The menu is small which always suggests to me that it's stuff that's really been mastered. I was particularly impressed but how! tender! both the meat in the pork belly dish and the beef noodle soup were, but the noodles in that soup were also extraordinary. My favorite restaurant in New Orleans. Perfect bao, and the Dan Dan noodles are delicious and Spicy. I eat here every weekend. Also, the music is not too loud and that matters a lot. when we go out to have conversation and eat a meal. This is an "alternative"kind of staff and they are amazing, young, fun. I get it's a small place and everything is made to order- so it was not a big deal for us. Just a heads up to not go here if you're in a hurry. The menu is very Chinese, offering strangely flavored sauces with the numbing quality I like (yes, your mouth tingles and goes a bit numb-paresthesia is the medical term). The atmosphere, conversely, was entirely New Orleans: an open corner cafe on a residential street. The place being called what it is, I ordered some bao and some noodles, and ended up with a couple of buns filled with yellow curry that were tasty without dipping sauce or hot oil but even better with. The vegan noodles carried the numbing sensation along with a complex flavor. Oddly, they've decided not to offer any vegetarian tofu dishes, so the noodles are made with plenty of delicious marinaded peanuts for substance. Thus, their menu is small, but vegetarian/vegan-friendly, but not quite as good as I might have hoped. If they start offering what I can only assume is a legit ma po tofu in a way that I can actually eat it, I may have to revisit the rating. For now though, the place delivered what the sign on the door said. Buns and noodles aren't overly filling, but I was glad to stop in for lunch and to get dessert later, and it was the taste I was looking for. read more

Read so many good reviews so we decided to give it a try. Went there at night. Gave them a call asking about details before heading over and was not informed about the new location. Drove an hour one way and only found out that they moved.... called again and the girl said they moved to a new location. need to update the address folks!! When we got there, they were about the close, so pressed to go instead. The lamb hand pulled noodles ($14 something) was okay.... only a few pieces of the lamb. Not too impressed. The braised pork shank was BAD! It was bitter and tasted like the broth was burned or something. So many pig hairs too. May be we just had bad luck that night. I've been here several times now, and I've always enjoyed the food when I'm here. The dishes I've gotten include: Dan Dan noodles, pork sung roll, Strange Peanuts, Ma Po Tofu, and XO Noodles. My favorites of all of these are the Dan Dan Noodles and Peanuts. Ma Po tofu tasted great, but it wasn't as spicy as I'd like it to be. The pork floss roll is great as well, but I'm used to a more traditional take on it (without the cream). I definitely recommend this place if you're looking for an authentic and affordable Chinese place. They are definitely not your typical Chinese cuisine which is what appeals to me most. I always look forward to going back here when I can, and now with the new location, it is even easier for me to visit. The new location on St. Claude is more expansive than the previous one, and their kitchen is more open concept for you to watch them cook (if you sit near it.) Service here has always been great. This funky little cafe in the Lower Marigny is turning out delicious food in a casual but friendly atmosphere. My wife and I split the titular Bao (steamed then pan fried) and loved them. Big, pillowy dumplings with a biscuit-like breadiness underscored by crispy fried bottom swathe a savory ball of pork sausage to delicious effect. I was eager to try the cumin braised lamb with biang biang noodles and my very high expectations were met if not exceeded. The slow cooked lamb, redolent of spice, unctuous and deeply satisfying flavored the satisfyingly chewy noodles. My wife loved the extremely rich pork belly with rice and despite loving my selection, I had a bit of entree envy. I can't wait to return and try more of their interesting (for New Orleans) menu. One orders at the counter and then awaits the selections but the lack of standard table service in no way diminished the friendliness of the very helpful staff. read more

I love the decor in this spot. It's so cute from when Estano renovated it originally. They have cute intimate 2-seaters with lots of light and openish kitchen. I arrived very late so I only ordered the two bao options (vegan and pork). The bao bun is awesome. The vegan was yummy enough. I felt the pork didnt have sufficient spice or enough of the stuffing. The curry was pretty bland. I was able to cure it by dipping it into the accompanying sauce. I definitely wouldn't order them again anytime soon. But that is primarily because the menu presented other tasty alternatives. I also do want to commend the staff. The staff was super pleasant especially given my late arrival. I loved the menu although it is pretty heavy on spicier items. I lived that they have specials in addition to the standard offerings. I will definitely give them the opportunity to earn some more stars. read more

What an interesting experience. As a self-proclaimed foodie, I'm ashamed to admit that I had tried neither bao nor freshly made noodles, so naturally when I heard about this place, I simply had to eat there. I ordered the vegan bao and the zha jiang mian with extra vegetables on top. Of the two, my favorite was the bao--a pair of soft steamed dumplings filled with curried mung beans and mock duck. Delicious, and very kind of them to offer a veggie version. The noodles themselves were great--so thick and satisfyingly chewy, yet not at all tough. The sauce, I have to admit, was pretty one-note. It basically just tasted like heavy soy sauce with no sweetness or tanginess--not awful, but could have been better. Price-wise it was about what you'd expect. I paid $15 for my meal before tax/tip. All in all a cool little spot with a breezy, relaxed vibe. I'll probably go back to try the tea eggs and tea leaf salad. read more

We were on a hunt to find some delicious Asian noodles, and we were fortunate enough to have found noodles and Bao! A quick 10-min Uber brought us out of the chaos into a quaint neighborhood where Bao & Noodle is located. Inside is very rustic and the tables are limited, but the food is delicious. We ordered the Fried Steamed Bao - and it was, hands down, the best bao I've had. The bottom was perfectly crisp, and the dough was soft and sweet. The pork filling was seasoned well without being overly salty. My mouth is watering just thinking about it again. I ordered the shrimp with egg noodle for my main dish, and it was ok. It is definitely pungent - maybe a little too shrimpy for me. I tried my friend's Cumin Braised Lamb noodle, and it was delicious - compared to NY's Xi'An. For a 2 man team - one server and one cook - service and delivery was pretty good. We'll be definitely come back when we make our way to Nawlins again! read more

Not too crowded during weekday dinner times. I saw people bring in wine so I guess they're ok with BYOB? Cumin Braised Lamb Noodles: This was super yummy, I had a few bites of it. The sauce was very rich and a bit spicy. The noodles are definitely not your typical noodles, but amazing -- they are freshly made, soft and chewy. The lamb was very tender and well-seasoned. I'd get this next time! Dan Dan Noodle with Pork: I really liked the housemade wheat noodles, which really dense and chewy. However, the dish itself was just way too oily for me, and I wasn't a fan of the flavor since it just tasted like noodles with chili oil. I think it would've been better if there were veggies or something in it to make it feel a little lighter. I couldn't finish it so I took it home, and it tasted better the next day for some reason. Scallion Bun with Pork Floss: I was expecting the typical white steamed bao bun, but I guess that's just the buns on the menu that explicitly say "steamed." This was more like a soft roll filled with pork floss, then coated with a mayo sauce and more pork floss. They are pretty big and filling! Good appetizer. They have daily specials, so be sure to check the chalkboard out front before going in! Otherwise the super nice lady taking your order will let you know. Overall, pretty decent Chinese food at good prices. Service was very friendly, and the restaurant itself is very cute and quaint. Plenty of parking in the neighborhoods too! read more

I enjoyed this little noodle spot quite a bit! We ordered the tea soaked eggs, pork bao, and shrimp noodles. Unfortunately I took a bite of the salty end of the tea egg first, and the rest of the meal was totally ruined as I was reeling from salt overdose. The bao was delicious, to be sure, and the noodles seemed great, but I think I really have to come back another time. The service was very friendly, the ambiance casual, and it came out quite speedily. There is some outdoor seating, and it seemed to be ok with BYOB, as someone else in the restaurant came and went with their own bottle of wine. K and I LOVED Bao & Noodle. We had dinner here a few weeks ago and loved everything we ordered. We thought of the place this Monday and were both devastated that we could not eat here because the business is closed on Mondays. We ordered the fried steamed bao (which was probably my favorite thing), dumplings of the day (pork and shrimp), cumin braised lamb with noodles, and the tea smoked duck. OK, just kidding about the bao being my favorite. Maybe it was the duck. I don't even know. I've been meaning to go to Bao & Noodle for years now and just finally went last night. I'm a sucker for restaurants in the Marigny so they already had that going for them. It's a super casual inside and you can see into the little kitchen where the chefs are going at it, which was fun. My friend and I grabbed menus and set wherever we wanted and then were treated by a sweet woman who gave us the run down the menu (I'm almost positive she was the only server so I was very impressed with how well she kept up with us). We ordered almost everything on the appetizer portion of the menu because we had to try everything. We got the vegan Bao, fried Bao, peanuts, tea leaf salad, scallion pancake, the vegetable of the day (cauliflower) and the wonton special. My friend and I LOVED the baos - you can tell they're homemade. They were unbelievably fluffy with a hint of sweetness. The scallion pancakes were also great! The peanuts were tasty but we definitely didn't need to get them with everything else we got - they tasted like honey peanuts. The tea leaf salad I feel like I could've left. The vegetable was a cauliflower with red bean paste that I found tasty but didn't love as much as I thought I would. The star of the show was absolutely the wontons and the sauce it came with. I will crave those wontons for years to come - seriously the best wonton I've ever eaten in my entire life. For our entree we got the Spicy Chicken Noodle Soup and the Dan Dan noodles. I found the soup kind of bland which was super disappointing. I would definitely not recommend it unless you were in the mood for something simple and hot to eat when you're feeling sick. The Dan Dan noodles I thought tasted great- similar flavor profile to the cauliflower. Overall our experience was great and we loved that all the noodles and Bao were homemade. Now been three times and, outside of a service issue once, we've been pretty impressed. Fried steamed bao is a must-order every time we visit - nothing like it in the city. Pork wonton special is also a top-tier app. Favorite entree is the dan dan noodles - think noodles are key and the spice is just right. Also enjoy the lamb and pork dishes, but the later is sort of an awkward eating experience with all the fat. Ordered the beef soup once, but, unfortunately, after waiting an hour for our order, I had to leave before it came to the table. Pretty decent reheated the next day. read more

I have to say I've never been compelled to write a negative review for a business, but my first experience here was appallingly bad. My friend, who highly recommended this spot & has been here many times, and I went for lunch on Saturday. I almost walked out 20 minutes in after the waitress refused to acknowledge us. There were two other tables that she checked on multiple times but she didn't even bother to say hello or I'll be with you in a moment - absolutely nothing. 25 minutes in we are eventually served water and placed our order - two entrees & two coffees. 15 minutes later the waitress was "busy" talking to the couple next to us. Which was encouraging because we could see that she seemed friendly and helpful.... to some patrons. She excused herself from them, mentioning out loud that she needed to go grab our coffee. 10 minutes later, & over 45 minutes into our experience, we still had not received anything. My friend goes in to politely inquire and was told the coffee was cold and they had no mugs to serve us. Look - no coffee - no big deal. The failure here was to communicate/inform us of the issue/ offer us something else for the ridiculous wait. We were very patient and did not complain. Finally almost an hour in - our waitress comes out with our food on a tray. She proceeds to stop at the table next to us AGAIN and ask them if they needed anything and chat while holding our food in her hand. I honestly couldn't believe it. I felt completely ignored. As she serves us she chimes that she's brewing a pot of coffee for us.... I no longer want coffee and am beyond frustrated at this point. The food was disappointing. Looked amazing but fell flat in taste and was quite bland. Waitress never stops by again but offers the couple next to us complimentary peanuts and more conversation. We get no apology for the wait or acknowledgement in any capacity. I did not finish my food. We leave - honestly feeling insulted by the whole experience. Walking through the now empty restaurant almost all the tables are still full of dirty dishes. The waitress is by the entry looking at her phone. She turns her back on us as we walk out and doesn't bother to speak. I've been in the service industry and sales for many years - it almost hurts me to write this review. But this was beyond unacceptable... and frankly I'm still upset about it. I will never go back. read more

I really wanted to like this place. I love hand pulled noodles. Traveling from Boston, I searched to see if any hand pulled noodle shops were around after an amazing meal at Dian Xin. We found Bao & Noodle through Yelp. I saw they recently moved to a new location and decided to have our last lunch there since it was further from the French Quarter. Unfortunately, we did not make it before their cutoff and ended up at St Roch Market. We decided to come back for dinner. We were greeted and allowed to sit anywhere. I remember from a previous review about the ventilation so I sat as close to the door as possible. The restaurant was pretty empty. The waitress let us know the specials (also written on the board near the register) and gave us a few minutes to decide. There were a mix of high tops and low table seating. Each one had a vase of flowers, chili oil, soy sauce and a box of chopsticks. She came back twice until we decided on what we wanted. The menu is slightly limited but we wanted to look up some items. We decided on the hand pulled lamb noodles and shrimp noodle w/ XO sauce. The waitress did her job, but I would recommend working on her service skills as she didn't give a very welcoming vibe. I don't remember her checking up on us as well once the food came. It took awhile for our meal to arrive though. There wasn't much of an atmosphere here. Decor was very basic and had some asian flare. The lighting was very dim in the front entrance room. You couldn't hear the music over the open kitchen. I love seeing the chefs do their job, but I cannot stress enough about having a good ventilation system going in a kitchen with steam and hot spices going. As the kitchen was getting busy, the smoke started to fill the restaurant. My fiancé had to step out a few times cause it was hurting his eyes. When we left, all we smelled like was oil and fumes. Maybe try leaving the door open? Finally our food arrived and we were already disappointed. For the prices we paid, we expected a bigger dish. These seemed like lunch sizes in the bowls. Being noodle lovers, we had them all over and by far, this was the smallest servings we have had for $10+ noodle bowls. The taste was mixed. The XO shrimp was on the saltier side, but resembled more of a lo mein. The shrimp amount and size was good. The hand pulled noodle looked amazing, but the soup fell flat on flavor. I enjoyed the abundance of lamb pieces and they were all tender. The noodles on the other hand were hard to finish. I had to stop using my chopsticks to grab two forks to eat these. It was way too big. I love hand pulled noodles. We've had them in NYC, SF, and Boston. They were overwhelmingly large and inconsistent in thickness. Some parts were thin and others were dense/chewy. This was my first time trying authentic Chinese food and omg I loveeeeeed it!!!!! My boyfriend and I got the curry bao, fried steamed bao, beef noodle soup, and biang biang noodles with lamb. The noodle dishes are very hearty and filling. It's not something I could eat often due to the high sodium but it's definitely a good comfort food after a long, hard day. I wish the baos had more filling but they were good nonetheless and tasted homemade. We'll definitely be back to try the duck and fish soon! read more

I am a Beijinger, now studied at Tulane and be in U.S. for several months. It is good and homelike to have Zhajiang mian tasted similar to what I have in beijing. The food is freshly made, which I found it valuable because most of the American Chinese restaurants here do not provide fresh and handmade "cooked wheaten food". In other words, most of the Bao(buns) and noodels provided elsewhere are probably frozen food or finished products. However, it is common sense that food will lose much nutrition and natural flavour in this way. Highly recommend this restaurant as this is pretty "Chinese" based on three dishes my friend and I ordered. Even though there indeed is not very much authentic, still scarce to have it in New Orleans. Have not gotten a chance to talk with Chef about how he learned all these, probably next time! read more
