Wow, all these years I've lived here, and I've never known about how much Boise and Basque have in relation. This pub makes you feel as if you aren't in the US anymore. Old English feel and environment. Great food! Good beer! And it was a blast to go there during the Basque festival! My fiancé and I went in there and barley heard a lick of English! We loved it! Came here for drinks with a friend when I was in town last week, he had always wanted to take me to Bar Gernika and I just never got around to it when I was living in Boise. This place definitely pays homage to the seemingly random but shockingly very prevalent basque culture in Boise. Not only is it located on the basque block (duh) but they serve all sorts of delicious basque food. They have a good variety of beer, both bottled and on draft, and the croquettes are amazing! The seating area is a bit small so I wouldn't suggest coming here with large groups but it's perfect for 2-4 people because they have 2-person tables with stools along the wall and 4-person tables in the back. read more

Have always wanted to try their croquetas, so we went for our first time during the San Inazio Festival in July. The gal was cooking up a storm in the itty-bitty kitchen. The atmosphere was great, however, the food fell pretty short. The croquetas were sorta flavorless, and the Chorizo we ordered was pretty average. I guess I was just expecting more. read more

Went last night because my mom told me about it as she saw it on Guy Fieri diners and dives show. Adorable outside and pretty cute, cozy inside. It's neat how the cook is right there at the door (open-style kitchen). Sat at the little, cool, old-world looking bar. Had Lamb Dip, very nice w/ delicious natural lamb and beautiful artisan french bread, nice au jus! My friend had Lamb Grinder, very good. Went well with our Guiness. Crouquettes were perfectly deep fried and very crispy, not greasy. Little crunchy balls o' flavor. Creamy inside. I had an espresso, my friend an Americano. Perfect crema! They pulled a great shot! The rice pudding was fantastic! Fresh cream and cinnamon. But, the staff seemed a bit 'too cool for school'. And the toilet was broken in the ladies bathroom, which apparently it's been the case awhile, due to the note left by another patron on the board in the restroom. read more

OK, I'm a sucker for anything labeled Basque. I've driven through the countryside around Fresno, Calif., dreamily imagining about all the fantastic food the local Basque population serves up. Mind you I've never actually eaten there or encountered a Basque or eaten anywhere in the area, but God is it some sweet thinking. So I'm here in Boise with time to kill and my googling leads me to Bar Gernika. I like the idea of some wine in the afternoon and I'm an idiot about lamb. Off I head. Smart move on my part. The bar feels like a cross between comfortable traditional European and well-worn street corner pub. I'm a fan of both. As a huge believer in ordering the favorite whatever I get the lamb grinder. Am I the only one, but does that first taste of lamb make others woozy? I'm not sophisticated enough to label the taste, but it's always creeped me out how much I like it -- I'm a horrible vegetarian. That's what the first bite of the grinder was like: creepy and woozy. I had more and managed to control myself to merely enjoying it. It comes with a selection of sides, but opt for the croquetas like everyone else says. You'll want to tuck some away in your pocket, but that's just dumb. Eat them all while sitting there, even if it makes your heart hurt. Wine and beer are plentiful, just take your pick. Though they serve up some Basque wines, the cheapest being the Terra Sera (sp?) which I had. It was serviceable though a bit off, but what the hell do I know? I finished it all with a pint of Guinness. Never a bad choice. As I write this I'm still riding a nice lamb buzz so read with caution. One idiot's opinion. read more

Yes, bar is in the name. Yes, a good deal of their food is served fried. No, do not confuse this with a bar that happens to serve food, like some Portland bar that will heat up a can of Hormel corned-beef hash while you pound a PBR. At the risk of sounding like a real estate agent speaking out of the side of his mouth, this place is charming and full of character. The food is quality, and while the drink roster isn't especially deep, at least what they have is good. It's a fantastic place to gather, to get to know someone, to get to know them again, and remember how good the simple things are, at least when they're fried. read more

The Boy and I looked at this menu several times before we ever went here. It was something we had waited on trying, and now it is something that I have to sit on my hands because I want to go back too soon! I love the Lamb Grinder! Like the gentelman below me, who also seems to try and eat little to no meat, the lamb grinder is worth crossing the line for. They make these "crogrquetas" which are a combo of deep-fried butter, flour, chicken (but I don't know where, there are no chunks) and some other goodness that makes the best fried ball ever!!!! If you aren't looking for unexplainable fried goodness you can find really good hand cut homemade french fries. The kicker of this place is that they have premium seasonal micro-brews all the time. They change frequently but they always top the meal. Love it here, eat outside if it's warm enough. read more

BG is a must go to when in Boise. If I lived in Boise , i would try to move into their back room!!What's not to love about this epic establishment. The staff is amazing to customers and they have that attitude that they want to be there to work and have fun, you definitely get that family vibe. They always have a great wine list and local draft list. And I don't know if they've won an award for it, but you MUST have the lamb grinder with croquetas or the solomo grinder with croquetas. Every year I've been traveling to Boise for the Albertson Boise Open. On Saturdays, I go to Bar Gernika for their tongue sandwich which is consists of sliced fried tongue with slices of olive bread and the most amazing red sauce on the planet. The red sauce could be a meal unto itself. I ask every year why they don't bottle it and the owner smiles politely. So I need to go back every year just to get my fix. read more

I was surprised to learn that Boise has a Basque population, and when I learned that Basque food highlighted lamb, I was sold. I decided to try Bar Gernika after doing a trusted yelp search and I was not disappointed. When I walked in, the place was small and packed (only downside is them potentially not having enough space when you want a table). I also witnessed a large group having to break up into individual tables, so I would not suggest trying to go here with more than 5 people total. I was so excited to try some lamb, so I ordered the lamb grinder and not knowing what croquetas were, but knowing they were a traditional part of the culture, I decided to get them as my side. Wow! The croquetas were DELICIOUS! They melted in my mouth- I could have just eaten those all night long. The lamb grinder was also delicious! The lamb had a nice flavor and I enjoyed dipping it in the au jus. Yum, yum, yum! I would definitely recommend this place! I also found the prices to be super affordable and reasonable! read more

Bar....Ger.....nika-nika-nika, that's the song I sing every time I go to Bar Gernika and taste one of their delicious croquettes. This place is small but it has character as one of the first basque restaurants on the basque block. I would go there for the experience but I have found the food to be a little bit over priced so I don't go there unless I'm craving a chorizo or something. Solomon sandwich, spicy lamb grinder. My friends all get the tuna melt. Croquetas are a true treat. The have amazing hand cut fries, but I always get the croquetas (everywhere had fries). Great soups and salads. Great limited beer selection. All employees are artists. Friendly, but not sugary. They remind me of New Yorkers. Always playing great music. Cool small hip place.
