This is my first ever review. I had to because...WOW. Came here for the 1st time for a friend's birthday. All the staff I encountered were extremely friendly and helpful. Hostess was super accommodating (SOOOO sorry we were late. Deny us entry if we are ever late again!!) and she was constantly making sure we had plenty of water. I gave Phil a couple of whiskeys that I wanted to try, and he helped pick out an AMAZING flight for us to try. They had several bottles that he told us was their private selection, and you could only try them there. Only for the serious whiskey drinker - otherwise it's a waste of good whiskey and good money. Although they have plenty of Scotch and Japanese whiskies, I'm a bourbon drinker and was impressed with their collection of American whiskies. Additionally, every bottle is available as a full pour or small pours to create your own tasting - like I had a side-by-side comparison of the high-octane Parkers Heritage 2017 11-year barrel strength against a very old Parkers Heritage 2016 24-year 100 proof. The menu includes pre-made flights like the $50 "Rye Not" with the light Old Potrero 18th Century, the bold Booker's rye cask strength, and the in-between Whistle Pig 2016 Boss Hog. Went to Jackalope for the first time last weekend and I wish I had known about it much earlier. Relaxed and intimate atmosphere. Excellent staff - knowledgeable and friendly, creates an intimate feel and you can really learn a lot about whiskey. The Bartender (Mitch I think) explained that it's not exactly a speakeasy, since they don't specialize in prohibition era cocktails and spirits, but the controlled entrance is definitely a cool touch! read more

We're not the bar going types yet sometimes a step out of those confines is worthwhile. We've enjoyed various whiskies and Scotches over the years to realize there are many to enjoy that elude us. A friend had told us this is a happening place in LA and if we have the chance...that opportunity arrived. Through Linh, she was kind to extend an invitation to a Balvenie and Glenfiddich tasting event held in the Jackalope section. The tasting was fabulous and following we we able to sit back and enjoy some additional fine beverages on hand. The drink menu selection is extensive and to try and choose where to start is a task in itself. Linh and Pedro were very hospitable and this was a nice moment for Linh to share her experiences with Scotch with us. Based on some of our vague preferences she was spot on with her suggestions for our likes and this showed her ability of the distilled craft. I rarely write reviews on Yelp, because so many bars are just mehh. I'm never particularly blown away and I feel another 3 star rating would be pointless. Bar Jackalope, on the other hand, is definitely worth reviewing. This is officially my new favorite spot. The decor, the whiskey, the staff are all on point. Easily one of my favorite speak easy in LA. It's hidden inside the Seven Grand. You would need to get reservations if you're planning to come here during the weekend. It can get pretty busy. But if you're free during the weekdays, getting in would be a lot easier. This place specifically does whisky. No cocktails of any. The bartenders inside are very knowledgable in their whisky and can help pick out one for you according to your taste. I was lucky to get in because of the gentlemen i was with knew the bartender that worked there. However, i have gone back several times, and they have seated me each time. I guess it's good luck. It also helps if you buy a bottle here. Helps you get seated if you leave a bottle here. The atmosphere is super moody and cozy. Try bringing a date that knows their alcohol or a friend to play catch up. read more

Pretty fun little bar connected to seven grand. My friend and I just happened to cross that threshold and saw that they had some whiskey specials, so we got an old fashion and a Jameson with ginger beer. Both were pretty solid and the atmosphere of the place was old-timey and hipster. It got quite crowded for a Saturday night, so we decided to a do a bit of bar hopping, but it was such a fun little place. Good drinks, decent service, mildly priced at $11/cocktail. read more

Cool, intimate little bar. You have to be seated and they won't let you in if there isn't enough seating space for you. If you're noisy (like me) they'll shush you bc it's not that kind of bar. it's a very quiet, chill, dark bar meant for just hanging out and relaxing and being classy, I guess. Good selection of whiskeys and they have a little cigar bar outside. I will come back here one day when I'm more sober so I can remember more details. I visited Bar Jackalope with much anticipation, having read the stellar reviews below. Little did i know, the whiskey tasting lounge exists in its form only during the week days (the wall is opened up and the bar serves as an extra bar to ease the demand of the weekend crowd). First of all, the short-haired/shaved head bartender that usually works the back bar is an absolute douche. I asked for a Irish vandal for my girlfriend and you said you didn't have them. You failed to mention that they were available for purchase at the main bar and didn't pip a squeak when i, disappointed, ordered a whiskey sour for her instead (which was terrible i might add). Was it so hard for you to direct me to the main bar so i could buy the drink my girlfriend wanted (instead of having me waste $11 on your crappy take on a whiskey sour)? Also, it wouldn't kill you to flash a smile or make eye contact once in a while with a paying customer who gave you no reason to harbor any ill feelings. Second, Don't order Old-Fashioneds from the Jackalope bar, it's a "draft" cocktail which basically means it's a pre-mixed solution that tastes half as good as the ones made fresh, by hand. It also means that you don't have a choice as to what type of Rye, Bourbon, or any other whiskey you'd like in your drink. Mine was watered-down and when i questioned the cocktail-on-tap system, the barkeep shot back with a shameless "It's the same Old-Fashioned". Talk about brazen ignorance of very basic customer service principles... The rest of my night was salvaged by the fact the bartenders at the main bar were courteous and friendly (per usual) and delivered cocktails of quality on par with that which i've grown accustomed to over my experience here. Stay away from the back bar and you'll be happier for it. I sure as hell ain't going back. read more

WHAAAAAT!!!! You mean there's another awesome bar hidden inside of Seven Grand? I was soo mindblown and excited when I found out there's a Japanese whisky bar. It's like a foodgasm on another foodgasm. It's hidden in the back hallway, with a sign next to the doorbell. Ring and you shall enter into Bar Jackalope, a refined whisky bar with carefully selected fine whiskies. If you are lucky, you may find some rare, "whisky superstar" sightings including Mr. Pappy Van Winkle himself! The bartender is one of the most knowledgeable whisky connoisseur I've seen. Throw any questions or fast balls at him and he'll answer right away. He'll tell you about the process of making whisky to where to find rare bottles, to the slight differences in taste profiles between years of the same label. I think the best thing of this bar that separates itself from others is the bartender himself. The bartender's guidance and expertise we received was stellar. We were able to navigate through the whisky menu and try some amazing stuff. The set up is relatively small and seats a couple dozen of people. Think dark, intimate, and makes you feel like you wanna light up a cigar there. read more

I'm a big fan of Seven Grand and I'm an even bigger fan of speakeasies. I was very excited to 1) try Bar Jackalope and 2) be able to get a table here without being a part of their Whiskey Club. First off, this is a great and intimate spot. You definitely feel in the mood the enjoy some whiskey and cigars the moment you walk in. On top of the great ambience, you are greeted by a great staff and a warm towel. There's no pressure to drink here, and you are basically sealed off from all the commotion going on outside in Seven Grand. Great selection of whiskey, especially since they had Kavalan. The Whiskey Club offer they have is a great deal since it gives you an opportunity to make reservations at Bar Jackalope. The staff is very friendly and even took the time to sit down for several minutes to talk to us about the bar and the club itself. read more

Awesome bar, and totally unexpected. We were in Seven Grand hanging out and when I was going to the bathroom, passed a door with a sign. There was a button that turned on a light, and after a couple minutes someone opened it up and invited me in. Its a whisky only bar, where you get a table and can talk about it with the bartenders. They begin it with a hot towel. I ve never been to Japan, but they said thats what its based on, and it definitely had that feel. We all had a great time and learned about some new favorite whiskeys. They also have cabinets you can buy bottles and put them in. I loved it because its so different than the other bars in LA. Something really new. BUT, dont go if you dont love whisky, because thats what its all about. If you want to try something totally different and new, then go there right away. read more

Blink and you might miss this ever-so-discreet whiskey tasting room at the back of Seven Grand. My friend Elle stumbled on it by accident one day as she was headed down the hallway to the restrooms, a chalkboard menu with instructions stopped her. We arrived on a Sunday evening, walked to the back of the bar, stopped at the chalkboard menu and rang the doorbell. The door opened, we were asked how many were in our party and then invited inside. It was a quiet night at Bar Jackalope, Elle said she's tried the doorbell twice before and been turned away both times because of a full tasting room-which isn't hard to accomplish given that there are only 4 tables. Our whiskey host showed up at our table with some glasses of water and hot towels, swanky! We were given the spiel on how this room works: It's not a place for whiskey snobs, rather a place everyone can come in and learn more about whiskey. It doesn't matter if you've never had a sip of it in your life, you're just cultivating your whiskey palate or you have your preferred brands already established, all are welcome. There are books to peruse, nosing kits to smell and the top selection from the front bar brought into the whiskey room to taste. If you like the place, you can buy your own bottle to keep in its own locker and make a reso whenever you want to come drink out of it. Or, you can join their whiskey club for $120/yr. It includes tastings and meetings and things of that sort. How cool is that? I must also make mention of the stuffed Jackalope heads along the back wall. Our flights of whiskey were hand picked for us by our whiskey host. Each of us had a different flight. Seven Grand's back room has now been converted to a exclusive Japanese inspired whiskey bar. Getting in might be tricky since you have to push a button, get your name taken down and be called upon once they are ready for you. But once you're in, a hot towel is offered to clean your hands. We opted to go with the highball with Hakushu all night which was refreshing. The whole experience is something new to myself and generally to LA but I feel Cedd Moses has a winner here. read more

This is a true venue for a complete whiskey experience!!! Me and my friends received a steam towel when we walked through the door, and were sat by our host. I have never experienced such intimate service, and it wasn't long until our bartender walked us through their scotch selection and helped us choose a dram to go along with our cigars. It's a little disappointing that most of the negative reviews are for when Bar Jackalope is closed on Fridays & Saturdays, and becomes an extension to Seven Grand. Coming here on the weekends means horrible draft Old Fashioned. Coming here on the weekdays however... At the very back of Seven Grand hides a discreet bell in the hallway and an entrance. Ring, and you're welcomed in by the bartender to a very cozy, classy lounge & outdoor patio. Mitchell, our bartender for the night, proceeded to hand us hot towels and glasses of water to start as he gave us an introduction of how the bar works and a quick overview of how to conduct whiskey tasting. I felt like I was in some Hollywood film where the university professor breaks down a lecture in some really cool manner - except here, it was the bartender. And there are also adorable jackalopes lining up the wall in the back. For tastings, you have the option of the single 20ml pour, or a 60ml carafe (shareable). We had our drinks served neat, while a water pitcher is set aside on the table, so you add drops of water to adjust the taste to your liking. And the menu itself is expansive covering all types of whiskey. For me, I've been searching to try anything from the Sazerac Rye whiskey family, since I've never been able to find them in stores. Once I told the bartender that - he proceeded to give a beautiful breakdown of what makes it special, the distillery, and his thoughts about rye over bourbon. And even more surprisingly, they had the Thomas H Handy Sazerac Rye. Voted the best rye whiskey in the World Whiskies Awards, the bartender explained how the bar typically gets one bottle a year and it is through a raffle. Maybe it's my newishness to the whiskey world, but this took the cake for me. Pricing-wise, it's perfect. There's no ridiculous markup, and the carafe cost less than that time I was in this strange club in New York and somehow paid $25 for a glass of Johnnie Walker Black Label... If you're looking for an intimate experience where you genuinely want to learn more about whiskey while looking at rabbits with antelope horns, this is the place. read more

My friends and I wanted to try a LA bar different from our usual haunts--Clifton's and the like--and were very pleased with our experience at Bar Jakalope! Located in downtown, quite near Pershing Square, this bar is easily accessible from many restaurants and business offices around that area. You enter and turn up a staircase in the corner of the building, and suddenly it feels like an old-fashioned whiskey bar--replete with pool tables and old bottles labeled on the walls from floor to ceiling. The drinks we had were delicious and the service speedy and friendly (despite the crowded Saturday night). I also enjoyed their cocktail (pictured above) called the Apple Betty Cobbler with lemon juice and cinnamon on top of crushed ice and bourbon. Besides that, it's one dollar to play pool and the drinks are reasonably-priced. There is limited space for seating but my group waited a bit and got a table eventually. If I could give more stars, I would. I've been looking for a place like this since moving to LA. Just a place to kick back, relax, and enjoy a nice drink and good conversation. Bar Jackalope is modeled like a speakeasy. When Stephanie brought us in, she pressed a button by a random door that had no handle, and a red light came on. Almost immediately, someone else let us in. We were told that's how to come back in if we wanted. There was inside seating and a small seating on the balcony for smoking. Beautiful interior decoration all around. The lack of crowds and exclusiveness is definitely a huge plus. Definitely an upscale venue. If you want the noise, you could always step out into the next room, Seven Grand, to listen to the live band. Service is also five stars. The bartender, Mitchell, was very knowledgable on the extensive scotch and whiskey menu. He offered great suggestions and picked out great selections for each of our individual tastes. We knew nothing about cigars, and shamelessly asked his opinion. He once again, made great selections. They constantly came over to check on us, but without being intrusive, and kept our water glasses full. The price is on the higher side, but for the experience, I was wiling to pay. There is a ridiculously large selection of whiskey. If you're unsure, don't be shy to ask for a recommendation. Most selections come in two sizes. A flight glass and a full pour. Flight glasses (about one ounce - one shot) are much cheaper, and meant for you to sample before buying a full one. A full pour has about two to two and a half ounces. I usually get mine neat, but if you like it on the rocks, they serve them, properly, in large stones. This is probably now my favorite bar, and I'll definitely becoming back. read more
