First off, the service was incredible. I wasn't feeling 100% and our server brought me a little kettle of mint tea, which was a useful remedy to ensure I could enjoy the entire meal. Ambiance was lovely, we dined early and it got busier as the night went on, but still felt cozy at our table for two. Standouts for me were the yellowtail crudo with grapefruit and basil or mint(?). The fish was almost creamy it was so tender and smooth, and the grapefruit was a vibrant pairing that worked beautifully. And I love a touch of fresh herb! I loved the eggplant app with complex notes of sweet onions, smoky eggplant, tangy feta, and a hint of chili spice. A bold starter that's not to be missed! We tried the sweetbreads ala saltimbocca which were beautifully prepared, but personally not a concept I enjoy. That said, my guy loves them and happily ate each portion - loving the rich cause and overall preparation. The sausage orrichette was my entree all star - fennel, the rich pop of spice to balance the richness of the sausage. Thick pasta pieces that could also serve as little bowls for the bits of meat and radicchio. Fabulously sharable and satisfying start to finish. Pros? Fantastic pasta. Cons? Insanely overpriced. Salmon crudo didn't taste that fresh. Duck Confit Agnolotti ($29): This pasta was insanely good. The agnolotti was DELICIOUS. One of the most delicious pastas I've tasted. There was barely any duck, but the sauce tasted amazing. I didn't really like the berries or whatever the fruity thing was that they added. The problem was that they skimped out so heavily on the dish. There was so little food on the plate that there the pasta looked spread out. There were sizeable gaps between each piece of pasta, making it look really sparse. I was still starving after finishing it. Scottish Salmon Crudo ($19): Salmon didn't taste very fresh. I eat a lot of sushi and salmon is my favorite fish, so this was quite disappointing. I did like what they did with the flavors, though. Ragu Bolognese ($28): Really good, fresh pasta. Not as good as the agnolotti of course, but definitely a solid choice. I have a lot of complaints... the biggest being the skimpy portions and the really high price points (especially compared to the amazing pasta in North End). Not bad, but they need to up the vermouth quality. A little too harsh. Had the broccoli rabe arancini. Nice taste but served at room temperature. I would have preferred them hot. Ordered a Nebbiolo. First one was really harsh. The more expensive one was at least drinkable at 16$ per glass. Final course was the bucatini amatriciana. Really nice but too much sauce. Looking at other dishes this seems to be the norm. Pasta was perfectly al dente. Service was just right (I sat at the bar). Would come back and try maybe some of the crudo or other items. Consistently pleasantly surprised by Bar Mezzana and good bang for your buck! We walked in around 8:45 but were able to be seated promptly! There was a private party going on in the back so it did get very noisy but the chaos was contained and I didn't think the service was compromised! For apps/sides, the portions were so generous! Fried Brussels sprouts were beautifully dark and crispy, with dollops of pancetta and cranberry, a combo that reminded me of char siu! 4.5/5 Roasted cauliflower salad had crunchy almonds and pomegranate, a satisfying bite to the lentils and chickpeas, salty hunks of anchovies. I do wish the cauliflower was roasted more, served warmer and browner. 4/5 Duck agnolotti were small and mild / not gamey but definitely different from your typical ground meat filling! The figs and onions were yummy but were just randomly floating around. The sauce had a strong balsamic tanginess balanced with a buttery nuttiness too that paired well with the cauliflower salad! 3/5 Seared scallops were tender and bouncy, with a creamy pumpkin purée but honestly I couldn't tell there was pumpkin in it. Plus more random braised greens. So this felt like 3 separate meal prepped components rather than 1 coherent dish but each component was still tasty! 3.5/5 So I also happened to attend Boston Magazine's Taste event and Bar Mezzana's sample was a massive highlight!! The sweet potato gnudi were SO fluffy on the inside and you could actually taste the sweet potato! Structured on the outside but soft and mushy on the inside, in a mildly velvety Gorgonzola sauce, topped with super crispy and savory thyme breadcrumbs. 5/5! I get emails from Bar Mezzana regularly and I appreciate how they always have professional pictures to accompany their new menu additions! read more

Came here finally with my husband last night! Overall experience: 4/5 Food: 4.5/5 Service: 4/5 The restaurant was lively and inviting. We had already stared at the menu and reviews long enough to know what we wanted to order- but that's also because that's what we do. We love when servers talk to us about the menu and explain items, while being attentive. This is where our experience lacked. We didn't have one consistent server and often were forgotten between courses, waiting long times between courses, before ordering drinks, and then for our check. This being said- the food was great and I'm glad we knew what to get without much guidance. Definitely recommend the tuna crudo, it was clean, fresh, and delicious. The octopus was perfectly cooked and soft without being too chewy (shareable for two). We also shared the eggplant dip with goat cheese and focaccia and this was delicious! The eggplant dip was smoky almost and the goat cheese balanced it perfectly. For our entree we enjoyed the Lobster Paccheri and duck. I think I liked the pasta a touch more than the duck but both were delicious. If you tend to like your meat more medium rare definitely ask because ours was more on the well done side by default. We enjoyed a great bottle of wine for a reasonable price and the Negronis were well made. Overall a great experience minus service! read more

Today was the first and LAST time at Bar Mezzana. My friends and I thought we stumbled upon a fun and cute Italian restaurant but we were wrong. My friends and I ordered plates only since the menu stated the plates were family style. However, the plates were tiny. I did enjoy my dish however my 2 friends did not enjoy theirs and the service was awful. Our server was Chantal and she was rude the whole night. On top of that you get charged a mandatory 4% service fee which I have no trouble paying for if the service was decent. The nicest service we got was the homeless man who came around asking for a dollar at the restaurant. As we were leaving the restaurant Chantal gave us all a dirty look. Worst of all we left starving and had to grab some snacks afterwards. Only would recommend if you aren't hungry and if you want bad service. read more

We had the tuna crudo and striped bass sashimi, both dishes were fabulous. Light and flavorful, we debated getting another order for dinner. Amazing amazing. We had a large group and we were seated in the back room and our waiters were amazing and attentive. The room and the entire restaurant is beautiful. The octopus was perfectly cooked. The vegetable on top added to the rich flavor. The yellow tail in citrus juice was amazing and I don't even like raw fish. The branzino entree was so so good and again I don't like fish all that much but it was my favorite of the three entrees we had. The potatoes with it were great. The chicken was great and tender. Everyone else acted like we were an inconvenience for showing up to our "no cancel $75 fee" reservation in the first place. Went here solo on a Valentine's Day when I was in town for work off a recommendation from the hotel bartender who was raving about it. Glad I listened. We dined on the early side for dinner, and service was friendly and accommodating. It's a pretty restaurant with a happy vibe. We were a party of 6, and ordered multiple apps, lots of drinks, and entrees. Half-way through dinner, as the restaurant filled, our server went AWOL and it was difficult to get service. Portions were on the smaller side, but adequate. The odd thing was when the bill was presented. A 20% gratuity was added to the tab, as noted on the menu. But when the hand-held was offered the first thing up was an opportunity to add a tip. I preferred to tip anything extra in cash, but our new server was adamant that it be electronic. They got no further gratuity. I like the restaurant, and it wasn't my first time there. It's extremely overpriced considering the portion sizes and the lackluster service. This is my first time at Bar Mezzana. We reserved at table at their patio which was nicely spaced out. The atmosphere was lovely, seems like everyone here is with friends or on a date catching up. I had a glass of rose and my friend had a glass of there regular gimlet. My friend and I shared the salmon crudos, their whole grilled bronzino, and a side of mushrooms for dinner. The salmon crudos was nothing special, it was like eating sashimi. The whole grilled white fish was delicious. They take it off the bone for you already. The fregola and the broccoli with the vinaigrette on top of the fish was divine. The sea bass was light and cooked perfectly. The roasted mushrooms were delicious as well but nothing special from any other mushrooms. Overall, my friend and I enjoyed dinner here and will definitely come back. read more

Although most of the pasta were misses and the server dropped a dirty fork on my friends white blouse... so 4 stars. Both crudos were delicious but the salmon was personal favorite. Super fresh and it was topped with something crunchy. The bread was a tiny bit stale but still good. And the bread with chicken liver mousse and prosciutto made a perfect bite. The prosciutto was salty and the mousse was sweet. The soft shell crab was incredible - light/flaky/delicious. The tagliolini and raviolo were not great. They both tasted funky, the tagliolini especially had an unpleasant aftertaste. The paccheri was fine but nothing to write home about it. I was excited to stop by after hearing good things about this place from a friend, so my friend and I made reservations for a Saturday evening. When we arrived around 6pm, the dining room was still around half-empty; it's a nice, open space with a refined aesthetic and plenty of outdoor seating space. By the time we left, the room was bustling - almost every table was full, including the large patio area outside. We started a black truffle burrata with a side of focaccia bread to share. Focaccia was so fragrant, with a wonderful savouriness from the rosemary/onion, and it paired excellently with the fresh, delicious burrata. A warning though - portion size for the focaccia was definitely large for 2 people, and I had to be careful not to overstuff myself before our entrees. For my main I ordered the tagliolini (with bolognese sauce), and my friend had the spaghetti (cacio e pepe); we split the fingerling potatoes as a side, too. In a sentence, the pastas were not great. Besides the sloppy plating, my tagliolini was too overcooked/soft, and the bolognese sauce - quite bland - was also really just too heavy for my taste by the third or fourth bite. Ground meat was OK - not the richest but served as a good contrast, both in flavour and texture, to the noodles. The cacio e pepe was similar - sauce was far too heavy (especially the amount of cheesiness), and in fact was quite unevenly distributed to the point that the noodles at the centre of the plate, untouched by the cream, were actually clumping to each other (as unsauced, cooked noodles do when left to their own devices). The potatoes, fortunately, were delicious - perfectly cooked through, excellently seasoned, and just a fantastic contrast to the disappointing pastas. We ordered a tiramisu as dessert, which was by far the highlight of the meal. Each bite of cake was oh-so-rich with a vibrant coffee flavour, and I really liked the frozen mousse - a unique touch that I think definitely worked very well. Each bite was just a perfect pairing of yummy, spongy cake and mascarpone mousse and really finished off the meal well. Dessert aside, though - I think this was still overall a very underwhelming experience. I was quite disappointed by the food - while the small dishes were not bad, the entrees were mediocre at best, and definitely much, much pricier than the quality warranted. I do think another visit may be worthwhile - there were definitely many fish/seafood plates that I'd like to try (and seem to be more acclaimed dishes) - so fingers crossed for a better meal next time :) read more

I have been to Bar Mezzana many times and had pretty solid experiences with the exception of this Sunday that I came for brunch. I was in between the Egg sandwich and the chicken sandwich, I asked our waiter for a recommendation and he suggested the chicken sandwich; I specifically asked if it was chicken breast and he said yes. We get our food I bite into it and surprise! The chicken was a tight not a breast. I ended up only eating the top of the bun and the cheese and left so disappointed... I would have said something but being with a bigger group and the fact that our server only came back to ask how the food looked when it was just served and not after we started eating made it pretty difficult. Anyway, I cannot stress the importance of knowing the menu enough; this definitely ruined my experience and will not come back. Brunch drinks are pretty good. read more

I can't believe it took me so long to finally try this place. 3 of us came here for an early dinner before a show, I'm so glad we got to sit on their patio outside, as it was beautiful. They have outdoors heaters which prolongs its lifetime. Our waiter informed us of two dishes that are not on the menu yet are always part of what the kitchen prepares every day: cacio e pepe and Amatriciana. I wonder why they don't put it on the menu as they are some delicious staples. We started off with the fritto misto - a mix of onion, artichokes and calamari lightly battered and perfectly seasoned. It came with a Calabrian pepper aioli and pickled fennel. I am not usually a fennel fan but this changed my mind. Both went super well with the fried fish and vegetable. As a main we got the bolognese, the amatriciana and the orecchiette with sausage and fennel. Everything was amazing, we licked our plates clean. Despite the crowd and our large party, the team serviced our table was extremely attentive and courteous. Great ambience and the food was excellent. Our menu was specially catered for our large group. The charred squid is to die for and the steak came out perfectly medium rare as requested. My part had a salmon dish and was oh so good as well. I have to say it has been a while since I returned and I forgot how generous the portion is. We end the day with plentiful to go. Bar Mezzana is always an excellent choice. Recently we enjoyed a quick dinner, both the gnocchi and goat cheese ravioli were delicious! We finished with the rhubarb cheesecake and that has the most amazing crust! Other favorites we often enjoy are the chicken under a brick, the crudo is always a great way to start a meal, and, if you want something easy, sit at the bar, enjoy a cocktail and one of the best burgers in the south end! The Yelp Elite had a community meet-up here right before the holidays, and it was quite a memorable experience. We ended up having about 20 people show up (maybe more) throughout the evening to give you an idea of the size of the group. Management was not only able to accommodate us throughout the evening, adding more space and tables to ensure we all had somewhere to rest our elbows or drinks, but the servers made sure that everyone was taken care of as if we were regulars or a private party. Nothing was missed, messed up, or charged incorrectly the entire night which really impressed me given the size of the party and the food that constantly streamed out. Even after a few appetizers I had prepared to have an entree. I decided on the octopus lumache and have to report that I am 100% happy I made that decision. The combination of creamy (but spicy) fra diavolo sauce, tender octopus, and noodles that were cooked to perfection gave me just the warmth I needed on a cold night. This was one of the more perfect pasta dishes I've had in the city. We also had a myriad of apps come out for us to share. Among the memorable were the following: - Eggplant crostini (tangy, creamy, perfectly balanced) - Pork Belly (rich, perfectly rendered and crisp, not pretentious) - House pickles (light, crispy, refreshing) and olives I'll be bringing the wife back with me, probably before (or after) we head to Shore Leave for drinks. The waiter was decidedly a bit condescending and snobby when asked questions about the cocktails. Seriously? I would bet a lot of people would not know the ingredients. Nothing worse than a waiter just being enough of a jerk to get you started. He backpedaled a bit, but cmon! I ended up getting a made up gimlet with basil that was quite good, but not on the menu. The food was fair- tagliolini ( should have just called it spaghetti) bolognese was nice- flavorful and authentic. The lobster paccheti was just on the underside of Al dente to be undercooked almost. I absolutely loved everything we tried here and appreciated the service and ambiance too. We started with two crudo. The yellowtail was perfectly acidic and the shima aji had a kick of horseradish and salty caviar. We also shared the Spanish octopus which was perfectly cooked with an outer crisp and then a perfect tenderness upon tasting it. For dinner we got the Tagliari which was absolutely delicious with sweet crab, corn and enough jalapeño giving it balance and heat. The halibut was also excellent, crisped on the outside and matched with potatoes and a somewhat Smokey flavored tomato pepper sauce. I wrapped with a grapefruit Campari sorbet which was topped with a Prosecco fizz. It was a perfect mix of dessert with the feel of an after dinner drink.
