We stayed at Yellowstone under canvas and walked over to the Bar n Ranch for dinner. Although this was our plan all along, we did not make any reservations for dinner since we did not know what time we would make it there. We went about 8:30 and they seated us right away. The waitress was really lovely and we had a great table over looking Yellowstone under canvas with a view of the sunset. Food was really great. We don't eat meat so review is for the fish items. We started with the trout cakes from the bar menu. Yum. These were great. Then we had the trout for dinner (figured we would go all out since its fresh and local). The trout main course comes with a ton of food (we were definitely stuffed after). Comes with a soup or salad and rice or potatoes (mashed, baked etc. ) and veggies. Trout was seasoned great. Let me say food is delicious. Burger was undercooked which they fixed quickly. My complaint is there is no servers. You basically have to try to stop random workers to try to get refills or condiments. The ask that you tip as you order but don't tell you your tip doesn't go to a server because there isn't one. Salad looks like it was pulled out of field no lettuce just greens. Bison burger was delicious once it was cooked to where it didn't moo at me. read more

I am hard pressed to have had a better meal anywhere. The flavor combinations were incredible. I had the Salmon which was cooked perfectly and complimented with two wonderful purées. The bison and elk kabobs my husband ordered were wonderful and I don't like wild game but WOW! My dad ordered the bison burger and it was great too. This place is totally worth the drive for dinner. We were staying at "Under the Canvas" camp on the same property and we were tired after a long day sight seeing. Make reservations, as appears to get very crowded for good reason! The restaurant was not much to look at from the outside, but don't let that deter you from going inside....it was really very lovely inside, with lots of window's overlooking the lovely hills of West Yellowstone, MT. A little pricey and the menu is limited, but everything we ordered was delicious. My husband had a bison burger which he really enjoyed. I had a beet salad with salmon filet on the side. Both were delicious! The staff was very friendly and attentive. I would strongly recommend this restaurant. read more

What a beautiful place... but they don't know what they're doing. I read about, and choose to eat at this restaurant because of it's YELP reviews. West Yellowstone is a town of tourist burgers and pizza, and we wanted something a littler nicer. I chose Bar N Ranch with the intent to have a steak dinner. The menu reads wonderfully, and should satisfy any foodie. But whoever is managing this place puts more effort on the ambiance than the food. My steak was warm, thin and not tasty at all. While it was advertised as a 10 oz NY, I would think it closer to 8. It's appearance was not only very un-impressive upon its arrival, it tasted very common. I am giving the restaurant a 3 because the salads were great, my wife's trout was good, and my daughter's lamb was also good. The cheese cake was creamy and tangy like home-made... very good, we really liked it. Service was a little slow, our appetizer didn't come out until after our salads and the same time as our main course. I had to call for the busboy to fill our water glasses... more than once (a pet peeve of mine) The hostess and the waitstaff were very nice, and very friendly, but they walk by empty water glasses and empty plates. Wow! We won't be staying anywhere else in WY or MT in future trips, and can't wait to go back to Bar N. We only stayed 2 nights, and wish we had at least 3 or 4 there. We stayed in the lodge, which was very nice but the cabins look really neat - and private. The restaurant was fantastic, we had breakfast and dinner there, and everyone's meals were great. The owners/management were very laid back and personable - like family. The Bar N offers tons of amenities and activities, set on a picturesque property. I had a thin, overcooked, pan-fried NY strip served with a (broken) blue cheese butter sauce. It clearly had sat under the salamander way too long. Served on a scoop of dry, tasteless smashed potatoes and forgettable green beans. It's steak and potatoes folks. If you're want to be a ranch-style restaurant and serve $33 steak and potatoes, do it right! And really --- rethink/update the menu -- chicken Oscar; strawberry spinach salad, blackened salmon with melon salsa -- it's so '80s. read more

Ambiance is great, food is only pretty good. I should have known something was up when the only way to get the 10-oz New York Strip (my favorite) was blackened with blue cheese. Now, I happen to kind of like meat done that way, but most steak-lovers want options, and taking those options away and forcing a heavily spiced version makes it look like you're covering up a mediocre steak. As it was, it was better than mediocre, but small and not really worth the premium price. I will say that it was medium rare, just like I'd asked for, underneath the blackening, so their chef knows what he/she's doing. Salad was great (Sundried tomatoes! Delicious homemade blue cheese dressing!), cheesecake was great, service was great. Even getting to the place along the pitch black roads was an adventure. I always look for the best steak in any new town. I was only in town for one night, so I can't say for sure that this was the best steak in town, but given the preponderance of burger and pizza joints in the town center, I'm betting that it is. So, mission accomplished. But I still have to be fussy: guys, start with a better, bigger steak, give the diner options, and that fifth star is waiting for you. read more

Our group of 6 stayed at the Bar-N-Ranch in W. Yellowstone a couple weeks ago. What a great place! Right from the first call they were so accommodating, so friendly and so interested in making sure our stay was right, convenient and memorable! Andrew, their GM, took a personal approach to ensure we were well taken care of. Deb, Ron and Max were so friendly, great to talk to, well trained and genuinely interested in our experience. Max (the chef) and his team cooked for us whenever we wanted to eat. This kind of service is unheard of today and yet I get the feeling these guys do this all the time! They really do know how to take care of their customer. Thank you all so very much! We will see you again next winter. As for the actual room; we rented the large condo #16? with 4 bedrooms, bunks, multiple baths, living room, kitchen, grill, huge stone fireplace, etc. It was spotless clean, new and a perfect fit for 6-8 adults. We parked our snowmobiles at the door and the main building was just across the driveway. I highly recommend this place as it doesn't get any more friendly, accommodating, clean and reasonably priced! Thank you all for making our trip so successful! See you next year. Very disappointed for a ranch that is supposed to specialize in meat. The strip steak that I ordered looked like they had forgotten to fire it and had been slathered in blue cheese to make up for the difference. The appetizers that we ordered were also so-so. We arrived in West Yellowstone on 6/18/2012 and wanted a special meal. Many Tripadvisor reviews were checked to determine where to dine. I'm new to Yelp, so that wasn't used at that time. Life is a journey with many decisions as we chose the Bar N Ranch just 5 miles outside of Town--it was listed as #9 in the top restaurants in the area. It's a new restaurant that makes you feel at home. Upon entry, there's eye candy everywhere! The owners had a Mountain built dead center in the dinning room witth different animals climbing on it. This was just plain big as I wondered what's in it-why was this built? The door was open, so I went in to find a wine storage room! For the meal, I started with a wedge salad with chunky blue cheese dressing-it was every enjoyable. I usually do not order Filet Mignon as most steak houses do not cook it correctly for MY taste. I like it really well done and all great cuts of meat can be cooked that way without destroying it---after all, who is paying for it? The steak arrived cooked to perfection with just the right seasoning. The whole meal was excellent. I highly recommend dining here IF you want a great meal. The full menu can be found online. What you actually get is a low grade cafeteria style setting and food quality. Apparently, the restaurant was a fine dining establishment. But since Under Canvas bought it over a year ago it has decided to turn this into a low-end eatery. They were also nice enough to let us borrow bear spray for our hikes (otherwise it would've cost us $50) and they also let us borrow some binoculars (without them we would've have see the wolf and grizzly that MADE our trip!) We have been vacationing in this area for as long as the Bar N has been open and every season several of us plan a "girls breakfast" at the Bar N because we love the venue and the food is good and reasonably priced. This year, however was a bitter disappointment. The once varied menu has been replaced with an overpriced buffet with little variety and depleted supplies. Food quality is marginal with no tableside beverage service and recycled paper cups for coffee. I can't speak for the dinner but I think management has made a huge error by replacing the previous breakfast menu with this buffet. I know our group will not be back and will miss visiting this beautiful location. read more

We ate here while staying next door at Yellowstone Under Canvas and were pleasantly surprised. The place is very nice, well decorated and cozy feeling. It was packed when we arrived, but there were two seats at the bar so we took them. They have an outstanding wine selection, all at very reasonable prices. The bartender was fantastic, very friendly and competent. In addition to waiting on the bar patrons she also acted as a waitress for several tables, which meant our service was a little slower than normal, but we didn't care-we're on vacation! The food was very good. We had the antelope sausage which was delicious and for entrees the lobster ravioli and rack of lamb-both good dishes. The highlight was the roasted red pepper and smoked Gouda soup. Had we known how exquisite the soup would be, we would have just ordered bowls and bowls of it. Overall a great experience. read more

During a long road trip that took us all the way to Minnesota. On the way back we stopped in west yellowstone and went horseback riding which was awesome. We were tired of campfire food and really needed a good meal. This restaurant did not disappoint it was a great find kind of in the middle of know where. The food and cocktails were awesome and the service was very good. We are heading that way again and will be eating there again can't wait. We went for my birthday ' it was really good food. My husband told the servicer it was my birthday & she drop the ball as he put it. We had a great table by the fireplace . It is ranked number one on Yelp for steak, but they no longer have steak on the menu unless you count a steak sandwich. Well, today I am in a 5 star resort in Big Sky, MT. All day I have been thinking about the trout I had at the ranch. So, I am sitting here in my fancy resort restaurant and I had a craving for that trout. Ordered the trout here. Good Lord I am so disappointed. In comparison, yuck here 2 thumbs up there. An unexpected wonderful surprise, the only place you can have a 5 star dinner while camping! This restaurant is located next to Under Canvas, a glamping camp ground. They have the most beautiful decor with mounted animals. My kids were mesmerized with the Buffaloes, cougar and elks that we saw. Food is outstanding! My husband had the Bison Filet and it was decadent and buttery, the sauce was delicious. We also had the Wild Mushroom Parpadelle and it was truly was the best we've ever had! The sauce was amazing. They also have a great wine selection and a private table in the wine cellar. Desserts are decadent, we had berries tart with vanilla ice cream and the cardamom creme brûlée, simply delicious. Magical winter wonderland that moved my jaded 13 year old to say that it was a highlight! We had Christmas Day dinner here, driving about 10 minutes from west Yellowstone for the experience. When we walked in, we were bowled over by the classic national park style great room with multiple gas and wood fireplaces, 3 story high ceiling, wood beams, intricately carved grand staircase, Christmas lights, and games galore. I was surprised they didn't have this Christmas meal listed on the website but they said they were just trying it out by word of mouth since it was the first time they were open for Christmas. The food was great, very creative. Max the general manager was amazing, warm, and his care and hands on approach really shone through. The whole thing was almost like a stereotypical Montana experience with epic atmosphere, snowy landscape/ open spaces, and super friendly people. read more

Had a great stay from Saturday to Thursday. Rooms were great, service was low key but attentive, continental breakfasts filled us up prior to 3 day-long snowmobile trips. We were the only ones there one or two nights, so it was quiet, but so beautiful. Not too far outside of town to be a pain. The restaurant is great but wasn't open every night so we went into town or picked up pizza. BYOB for happy hour and hanging around the lodge. Enjoy! read more

I want to give it 5 stars because almost all of the food and desserts were amazing! I ordered the plain Ceasar to start and it was THE best Ceasar I've ever had. The dressing was spicy with anchovies but perfectly balanced. I ordered the pork chop with cherries, it was huge and yummy. The girls ordered, steak and frites. The Wagyu Hanger steak with Frites was tender and juicy and the sauce was the perfect accompaniment! The fries were fresh cut potatoes and very good, but not thin like real frites. My husband ordered the beef burger- great, and a salmon appetizer, which was served raw on this lemon chiffon, both were wonderful. Our friends ordered crab cakes which they loved and foie gras and elk and bison, everyone raved over all of the dishes. We also had all three desserts on offer, a cardamom creme brule, bread pudding and puff pastry. The Brule was the best of the three, the pastry next, but the bread pudding was not great. It was dry and had this very salty carmel sauce it was served with, but it was not pudding. The food service was good, but the server completely made mistakes on our separate checks and our friend ordered a Johnny walker red and the scotch was old and the bartender was aggressive about the whole thing. He actually stalked over bottle in-hand. It started the meal off a bit rough, but we really enjoyed ourselves overall. It's a drive from town at 6 miles, but worth it. read more

I didn't go into this place expecting much but since it was one of the few places open late in the middle of nowhere Montana, I decided that food is food. However, somehow this place managed to disappoint me beyond my comprehension. My family and I all ordered the steak frites; not a wise choice to begin with but we were all craving beef. Somehow, it took 50 minutes for our food to come out and it was literally 3 pieces of burnt ass dry ass "beef" on top of a ton of fries. The worst part was, the place is set up similar to a fast food restaurant by having you order up front but with none of the speed nor even the taste of a decent fast food place. I'm only giving it an extra star because the wait staff were all pretty nice and I do think they deserve credit at least for that. Our waiter did end up giving us free ice cream as an apology to us for waiting so long and we appreciate it but it doesn't make up for the horrendous food. I'm going to give this place 5 stars because the food was exceptional even though the bartender yelled at my boyfriend and acted extremely surly and unprofessional. The food here was delicious and we were able to try elk and bison tenderloins, prepared in a unique way, a very Montana experience, but what everyone in our party took away from this meal is whatever you do don't complain about your cocktail being made incorrectly or the bartender will come barreling out from behind the bar and talk down to you. My boyfriend told the waitress his drink he ordered, a Johnny Walker red ( which he always drinks at home, he knows what it tastes like) was either the wrong scotch or something was wrong with it. The bartender came barreling out from the bar furious that my boyfriend had complained about his drink and showed my boyfriend a very dirty old scotch bottle. The bartender was so extremely rude about the whole situation. Wouldn't you think he would have been apologizing for the drink not being good? Although the food we all ordered at this restaurant was exceptional the biggest thing we took away from the meal was how unpleasantly we were treated by the bartender. So my boyfriend then ordered a Johnny Walker Black, a scotch that's twice as expensive instead of the red since the red they were serving seemed to be off. The drink he was served he said tasted like a mixture of Johnny Red topped off with Johnny Black and he ended up sending it back and just drinking water thinking the bartender was messing with him. He asked to speak to the restaurant manager at the end of our meal and they sent out the executive chef instead which was kind of frustrating as what can the executive chef do about a rude surly employee? After the whole debacle after having the balls to complain about the cocktails our food came out and was exceptional; The foie gras with huckleberries was amazing. The elk and bison tenderloins were both made to perfection; the veggies they came with were perfect. The good bad and ugly... The good: Great decor and the soup and appetizer were fantastic. The bad: To say the service was slow is an understatement. While our waitress was doing her best the restaurant was understaffed. The food took a long time to come out and we had to ask for refills. Not something you would expect from a high end steak house. The ugly: we all ordered the special which was supposed to be a bison filet. When they finally arrived all of ours were over cooked, and mine was almost charcoal. In fact I questioned whether or not it was actually bison but it was hard to tell because it was so overdone. Plus it wasn't a filet but a cut of sirloin but that probably gets down to semantics of their advertising. I sent it back but I didn't have them redo it since it took over 45 minutes to get the first one. There didn't seem to be any concern from the management that their signature dish...steak...was inedible. Unless they change things this place is sunk. read more

Our family stayed for 4 nights here and totally satisfied with it's quality. Here was just 15 minutes from West Yellowstone Airport and also 15 minutes to the west gate of Yellowstone National Park. The lodge's atmosphere was beautiful country western style and all of staff were always friendly. Full breakfasts were served which were one of our fun stuff every morning. In general, people tends to stay inside the park. However we definitely repeat this lodge again. read more
