Went for my wife's birthday. Arrived early and were seated at a great table by the open window. We sat for a while before a water took our drink order, it didn't appear anyone was actually assigned to our table as different waiters stopped by and asked if we had ordered yet, which we hadn't. My martini, ordered very dry, had so much vermouth it was undrinkable, so sent it back for a tannery and tonic. Not sure what I got, didn't resemble a T&T, but I choked it down to move on to wine. After a lengthy delay we ordered apps, delicious. The dumplings were excellent as was the salmon roll. After watching others who sat well after us finish their meals we still hadn't ordered dinner until my wife flagged down another waiter who then helped us the rest of the night. Dinner arrived after a lengthy delay and a different times. The udon noodles were pretty good but the poke bowl was pretty lame. Little bits of tuna and not much flavor. Our waiter who saved the day was really apologetic and comped us the dinners. I realize everyone is short staffed, but they seemed to have plenty of staff. Overall apps very good, drinks poor,entrees mediocre, service missed for us until we got some help. Can't blame covid for terrible drinks. read more

Not only did Bar Yoshi upgrade their location, but they also upgraded the menu to set them apart from any Sushi eatery in New England, let alone Nantucket. I was visiting Nantucket in early October. They were one of very few spots on the Warf that were open and operating at full capacity. The cleanliness of the restaurant is impeccable which made my fiancé and me very comfortable. We dined inside and did take out to our small cottage at the Boat Basin. The quality of the take out was just as good as the experience inside the restaurant. Each dish was fresh and delicious. The owner is engaging, funny, and even went out of his way to make us a new menu item he was testing out for next season. Since I was touring the Island with my fiancé (her second time in ACK) we also received some of the best local knowledge that made our experience unforgettable. Very rude and terrible customer service. I walked in to inquire about a table for 2 (midday), unknowing that the restaurant didn't serve anything in the middle of the day. The man at the door and young woman behind the register looked at me then immediately went back to their own conversation. Then finally acknowledged I was standing there. The man at the front very condescendingly told me I can sit outside to "take a load off" but that they don't open until 4:30pm. All in all. Very poor first interaction. Would never go back and spend my money on this establishment. "Reminds me of the sushi at my college cafeteria" was my first thought. Might just be the inflated Nantucket pricing, but the fish is not worth the price. Maki rolls are 6 piece instead of 8. Only Japanese beer is Kirinichiban, but they had run out when I was there and the only other option was a local brew that I didn't care for. Service staff didn't seem to be happy to be there. Probably my own fault, Nantucket as a whole is not really known for sushi. On the good side, the place has 6 or so tables in a cute room and feels quaint. Dinner last night, started with spicy tuna roll and edamame. Both were good. Next was "flash fried" calamari. I could not tell that it was squid, totally over cooked and burned. Beef skewers and Pho to finish it out. Good but not great. Prices are pretty much double what one would expect to pay. Least expensive wine by the glass was $24...ouch. Terrible food. Terrible service. Ordered 4 rolls and a seaweed salad and was charged $90. I was promised my to go order in 10-15 minutes and I didn't receive it until almost an hour later. On a recent trip to Nantucket island in early October, my husband and I met up with two friends, whom are year-round residents. They suggested we eat dinner at Sushi by Yoshi, and we were delighted to check the restaurant out. Because the restaurant is very small and the dining area tiny with seating close together, we had to wait about 20-30 minutes for a table. Once we got in there though, the place seemed to clear out almost all at once, until our table ended up being the only one left! That was nice, though, because we no longer felt cramped. Now, despite the small accomodations (certainly not the proprietor's fault), the service, value, quality and taste of the meals was extremely satisfying for all of us. My husband and I enjoyed some wonderful shumai and crab rangoons together and our friends snacked on a bowl of lightly salted, perfectly steamed edemame, while waiting for their sashimi and sushi platter to share. My husband & I ordered some maki shushi rolls: me a Dynamite and Spicy Tuna roll, and he the Scallop Tempura roll (on special). The crab rangoons were probably my least favorite, though. I've had better as I've ordered them in many different places, as well as making my own at home. We were all very delighted with the quality and taste of our meals. We were able to bring in two bottles of wine with us, as this small eatery is BYOB only. We really enjoyed our first dining experience here and will be sure to be back on our next visit off the mainland! read more

I just returned from a week in the Cape and out of all of the restaurants I dined in during my stay, Sushi by Yoshi was my favorite. The sushi was unbelievably fresh. I had the Salmon Nantucket Roll, the Dynamite Roll and a shrimp/avocado roll - all were delish. The spicy sauce in the Dynamite Roll was not the spicy sauce to which I am accustomed (spicy mayonaise), it was more of a tabasco sauce - different in a good way! The place is small, somewhat lacking in ambiance and it was BYOB but I was there for the fish and only the fish and the chef more than delivered. Highly recommend! read more

Let me preface this by saying this is Nantucket. If you want ambiance spend more and shuffle down to Lo-La. We did the opposite and read the reviews on Yoshi and gave it a try. Take out should be ok in town. We eat sushi maybe once or twice per month so our compass is pretty accurate. Getting to the point I will rate the dishes 1-5. 1. The place is tiny, cramped with zero ambiance. Sitting at the sushi bar is sterile. 2. Since they didn't offer Toro...I opted out of sashimi. I quick look around indicated that most were enjoying the rolls. We ate Gyoza (4) Edamame (3) spicy tuna rolls(2) but the soft shell crab and tempura shrimp rolls were indiscernible(1). They were not only served on top of each other but there were so many other ingredients you couldn't taste the crab vs the shrimp. All filler. I should have taken a picture!!! Large portions overwhelmed the presentation. 10 pieces per order is overboard! I would rather enjoy more variety...and please less rice filler. 3. This place was being run by 4 and the service suffered. The staff consisted of one Sushi chef who never made eye contact at the sushi bar; one chef working the fryer and other food ; and two waiters that were overwhelmed and unfriendly. My dead edamame shells sat for 20 minutes with other dirty dishes on the edge of the sushi bar as they walked by time after time. I finally asked for their removal. The place wasn't even that busy. I can't imagine what they encounter on a busy summer weekend. Our food did come out promptly!! 4. BYOB means BYOB. By prepared to open your own wine and chill it if necessary. I tried to write a constructive review as I feel slamming places with 1 and 2 reviews really requires a horrible experience. I've been here twice and both times the service was solid (polite, but not fawning - it's a busy place) and the sushi fresh and delicious. Relative to most other things on Nantucket, it's also inexpensive - there are a lot of maki roll options for the same price as a chipwich at the Juice Bar. Yes, there is often a wait, space is tight, and despite probably being the least-expensive sushi on Nantucket, it still isn't cheap. The BYOB aspect is a little problematic since there are only wine stores around so if you want sake or a Japanese beer -- forget it. But my main issue with the place is it never seems to have any specials (or maybe you have to sit at the counter?) Each time I go I ask, and they say 'just what's on the menu.' I'm not trying to tell the chef how to do his job: it's his place and his system. But I'd like to go somewhere where the chef has an abiding interest in providing the freshest, seasonal, local fish. If you consider the other options on the island (not many), the sushi here was good enough. On the mainland, I would not pay these prices for this amount of sushi (the rolls are smaller than average and not particularly creative). We enjoyed two out of the four rolls very much. The other two rolls were OK. Service was below average and slightly awkward. The server applied a very strange seating logic. The basic premise is they only seat you at a table that fits your party, even if there are plenty of other empty tables that could be slightly more comfortable. The restaurant was empty enough that we could have gotten our table of choice (away from the bathroom but with an extra seat than we required) but were told we would need to eat quickly if we wanted to sit there. This was repeated with another party, that was crammed into a corner while there were plenty of other more spacious tables. I see that a 2016 reviewer noted the same approach to customer service, so it is not likely to change any time soon. If you're craving sushi on Nantucket, this will do, but takeout might be a less annoying option. read more

When I'm craving some great sushi or want to grab takeout for a quiet night at home, I head right for Sushi by Yoshi. I've never had occasion to dine in, so I can't speak much to the wait staff, but the front desk people I order from have always been super nice. I like to try new things and they're very good about making recommendations. The inside of the restaurant is small, but quaint and outside the bustle of the surrounding streets. The sushi is incredibly fresh and you can see them making it right in front of you. I would agree that it's on the pricey side, but the fish is the highest quality and prepared by an expert, so I've never complained. I think the best thing on the menu is the Dynamite roll. They should really start bottling the spicy sauce they dribble on top because its so delicious I would put it on everything. I have also enjoyed some of their other rolls and sashimi. I think it would be hard to make a wrong choice. The only non-fish dish I've had is the pan-fried noodle. Surprisingly tasty for simple noodles with vegetables! It's a shame. I have loved going to this place for many years and especially now during the summer. But I was greeted with rudeness and a lack of consideration towards the client. When asked about their hours, I was instructed that (it's up to the owner). In a normal time this wouldn't have been upsetting. But during these times, leaving the house is a very planned activity. This makes it difficult to plan when to come or not. When I brought up their hours on google (which per google terms and conditions is set by the entity who claimed the business, which is Bar Yoshi in this situation) he dismissed it and told me not to believe everything on the internet. I was coming from a genuine point of curiosity and understanding, to plan to bring my family here later in the week when they are open. Instead I was met with hostility and patronizing tones. Sad to say, but they won't be getting my business or boasting recommendation any longer. Was very excited to check this place out as the island has only a couple options for sushi. Online it says it's BYOB so my guy and I brought a nice bottle of sake with us. We were seated immediately as there was no one there other than one table with a family. We asked for a couple of small sake glasses and our server obliged happily. After placing our order (we tend to order a lot), cracking open the bottle and drinking a decent amount, another server approached our table and told us that they do not allow BYOB. We told him that online it says that the restaurant is BYOB and he replied that the restaurant had stopped the BYOB a while ago despite the fact that online it says it's allowed. He asked us that we stop drinking and perhaps order something from them instead. I thought this was peculiar and distasteful as our original server had seen us bring the sake and brought us glasses knowing they were for our own bottle. After the second server confronted us, the staff became rude and curt. Our original server was no longer smiley even though she had mislead us to believe BYOB was fine. We considered asking them to allow us to finish the bottle as we had ordered a considerable amount of food but decided to save it for later. The food was subpar at best and not worth the prices you pay especially with so many other great options on the island. The yellowtail was enjoyable though. Add insult to injury, our server came over and attempted to clear our table before we were done eating... will not be going back. Would not recommend this place. I would say I eat sushi in NYC at least once a week and I have never encountered such a dilemma. I would expect that with such a misunderstanding, they might have let us enjoy the sake. I've been coming to this island since I've been 15 and am 31 now so my summers here have been wonderful; and the sushi I've eaten over the years have been only getting better then the years before. I used to eat at Sushi by Yoshi at least 3 times a week during the summers I lived on Nantucket (1999 to 2001), so you can say I'm a fan. It's on the agenda every summer when I return to the island for my visits. Just had take-out last night to eat on the "boat back to reality" after Memorial Day Weekend. Still happy with the food and the service. A few notes: it's BYOB, and they close for a couple of hours between lunch and dinner service (so don't fall in love with the idea of going there around 3pm or you'll be sorely disappointed, as I always am when I forget this). Also: curry rice is amazing, only place I've every seen it done so well and simply (no fried katsu business!) and out of the 3 rolls we got last night, the Nantucket Salmon was the unanimous favorite. read more

In the week I was fortunate enough to spend on Nantucket, I had sushi from here twice. Having lived in the Pacific Northwest, I was a bit skeptical about sushi being good anywhere else. I was completely and pleasantly surprised. Hence, the reason the second visit. The first time, we ordered take out. Which was fine for me because even though I am skilled at using chop sticks, I prefer to eat sushi with my hands. Whatever. So, I wasn't sure what I wanted, so my friend, who lives on the island, ordered for us. When we got back to the house, I was ready to dig in. The "Dynamite Roll" was just that, dynamite. I could drink the dynamite sauce by itself. So, so tasty. And the Caterpillar Roll, although not really sushi, was so good as well. A great compliment to the Tuna and Salmon sashimi and the Shrimp Tempura Rolls. Having a great experience the first time, we had to order from here again. The portions were generous and the prices were great in my opinion. And if I ever get back to Nantucket, I will be visiting again, for sure. read more

Sadly, After maintaining very high standards for 20 years, the chefs went to Lola and everything about the place went down hill immediately. Then the fire was the coup de gras. Unless the owner re commits to the quality the customers were used to there is no point to re opening. Great News!! It was a Thursday. We were dead tired for bicycling. I called in to do takeout, just because I figured we would have more time to relax before we took a flight out in the morning. We showed up after they told us 45 minutes to find two disgruntled men who basically did the same thing we did but were telling us they had been waiting almost two hours for their takeout. After they got theirs, we thought maybe it was an accident and maybe they don't do that usually. Two hours later, we were furious. Don't tell us 45 minutes if it's not 45 minutes.
