3/5 stars Barbacoa is easily one of the most unique restaurants in Boise. The atmosphere is stunning with incredible artwork, a massive wine wall, and over the top decor that makes it feel like an experience rather than just dinner. The tableside guacamole was absolutely phenomenal and was the highlight of the meal. We also ordered the grilled octopus, carne asada, Hot Rock Filet, and the coulotte steak with Cajun shrimp. The Hot Rock Filet was a fun presentation and cooked perfectly. Unfortunately, the coulotte steak was much chewier than expected, although the staff handled it well and removed it from our bill without any hassle. The carne asada itself was good, but the rice wasn't very appealing. The service was friendly but felt a bit chaotic throughout the meal, and the restaurant was noticeably smoky inside, which took away from the experience. Barbacoa is worth visiting at least once for the atmosphere alone, but considering the premium prices, I expected a more polished dining experience.
This place is very nice and was our first visit. Cool interior and servers were great. We started with the tableside guacamole, which was very good. We had party of 3 with mother in law - so we opted to split the 2 1/2 lb Porterhouse for 2. Probably the thickest steak we've ever had and it was good. With the rock, it was a good experience with the hot rock. I think in the future, we would each order our own as there was like a giant T-bone and a little bit forward to carve as a table. It was her birthday, so she got the cotton candy desert which was unique. Definitely not your kind of place if you're into the sizzler, as you will have a sizzle hole in your wallet. We will be back for special occasions for sure.
My husband and I are visiting from out of town, and after asking several locals for restaurant recommendations, Barbacoa came up again and again. We had an 8:30 PM reservation on a Friday night but arrived about an hour early. Despite the restaurant being busy, the staff was incredibly accommodating and seated us right away. Our server, Ryan, was fantastic--attentive, knowledgeable, and full of great recommendations. The tableside guac came highly recommended, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. I told my husband it was the best guacamole I've ever had (get it spicy if you're into that thing) The prices are definitely on the higher side, but the food, ambiance, and overall experience made it feel worth the premium. Somehow I missed taking a photo of my steak, but it was cooked perfectly and had a great flavor. Personally, I would have liked a little more seasoning, but it was still a very solid steak. Overall, Barbacoa delivered a memorable dining experience with excellent service, delicious food, and a beautiful atmosphere. I can see why it's a favorite among locals, and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Boise.
A really fancy steakhouse in Boise with signature tableside guacamole and hot rock steak with a fire show! Reservations are strongly recommended especially the weekend, but usually for the nicer months, most people go for the patio so reservations are mandatory for that. Indoors were pretty empty so you can probably get away with walking in, but for peace of mind, I would recommend a reservation. We went on a Saturday during mid May so people were celebrating Mother's Day and graduation, so we had to make a reservation a month in advance for that dinner service. We got the BBQ duck quesadilla, tableside guacamole, and the signature hot rock filet with a side of zucchini chips sprinkled with cheese. This was more than enough for 2 people as every dish is huge. The quesadilla is delicious, with a good amount of duck. Kind of similar experience to a BBQ chicken quesadilla, but fancier. Tableside guacamole is good - lots of guac but since we were seated outside with a beautiful lake view directly, there were steps so it was not possible to see the guacamole prepared tableside. The server should have mentioned it as we wanted to see the preparation, and we were never informed as such so the premium for the appetizer was not as worthwhile. The hot rock filet was good. I loved the fire show when they pour the mix of cognac peppercorn sauce. The steak was incredibly high quality - really juicy and not much tendon. This is the type of steak I have been seeking in many restaurants that fail to deliver. The zucchini chips side was good, a little flimsy on the batter, but nonetheless satisfying. We got cocktails that were icetinis - a glass with an ice shaped like the glass. They pour a small portion of the drink on the glass and left the rest in the cocktail shaker for us to pour gradually so that the drink is not as diluted, which is a good touch. Service can be improved - I understand the server is fairly new but there should be a minimal amount of experience to serve at such a high end restaurant? Some big misses I had were not giving shared plates until we asked, covering a bit of the show with the arm when pouring the fire cognac, and when requesting the check, he took a pause to place the receipt at the table but failed to see that he placed the check on top of some guac we dropped at the table so my credit cards after payment were incredibly sticky and oily. If people are dropping hundreds for a nice experience, I expected service to be better than that.
Splurged and had a wonderful dinner out at Barbacoa. We love coming to Barbacoa and taking guests that are not from Boise so they can experience the Firerock Filet. While the price point here is higher than a typical date night for us, our experiences have always been worth the price tag. The staff is attentive and offers great recommendations. The table side guacamole is a must. So good and they tailor it to your requested spice level. Be warned, it is enough guac to feed a table of 6. So good. The Firerock entree is a crowd pleaser, and tastes amazing. You can't beat the experience of it getting flambéed at your table. I've also tried various cocktails and have never been disappointed. They serve their martinis in an ice glass (yes the glass is made of 100% ice). The presentation is so fun. This is definitely our go to for special date nights.
This was the most amazing meal in the most incredible space. I cannot get over the decor. I've never encountered such immersive dining experience. The food is excellent: creative, thoughtfully presented, and delicious. Absolutely loved the plating and drink presentation. But the stuff inside makes me want to chain myself to one of those swivel chairs with fleur-de-lis bronze trimmings.
All I can say is don't miss this place! Take a moment to take in the ambiance of the space, it's like an art installation. The views with the wide open doors is gorgeous. And most important, the service is impeccable. RICH was the best in presentation, service & over all experience. We wanted for nothing u see his watch. His sidekick, I feel horrible that I can't recall his name, was amazing as well.
We came during a busy time and generally they like for you to have reservations but fortunately they had room in the VIP section so we were sat in seconds. The room is cute and has good vibes but it definitely is VIP. Closed off to any people watching. We got the crab bisque, flatbread stuffed pepper and it was amazing!! I ate all of my plate. The waitress was very kind and attentive. I had found something in my food and I wasn't sure what it was so I asked the waitress and she wants sure. Honestly, I wasn't pressed about it and still ate the whole thing. She said the manager was going to comp me but I told her NO! I ate the whole thing I Will absolutely pay for it. She still took it off so I left a %50 tip. Excellent food, service and prices. Must recommend!
It's been a few years since I have been to Barbacoa. Tonight we came in for my husband's company late Christmas Christmas party. Last year we celebrated at their sister restaurant Coa Del Mar and enjoyed every bit of it. My husband and his co workers can't get enough of the filet hot rock. It was an unanimous vote to come to Barbacoa to celebrate our post holiday dinner. Our first interactions coming in was not pleasing. I will have to say, the hostesses were quite rude and unorganized. Our table had already checked in and sat. We were the last ones to show up. The hostess had a hard time locating our reservation even though our party was already somewhere in the dining area. We repeated the reservation name to her several times. Clearly she wasn't paying attention since we had to say it over and over again. After several attempts, she finally located our party. "Someone will guide you to your table". After standing there for a bit we realized no one was going to "guide us" anytime soon. It's such a shame that we started our experience with this kind of service. We ended up just locating our party on our own. She was completely useless in the help department. Our server had gotten drinks started for our table since we got there late. She got us squared away after we got ourselves situated. We breezed over the menu while she grabbed our sodas. Guac was also started for the table. The table side guacamole never disappoints. We toasted, enjoyed our appetizer and hung out till our server was ready to take our orders. I ordered the ribeye tonight. My husband got the filet hot rock with a couple of his co workers. I asked for my ribeye to be really well done. With my new kidney, I can't really have undercooked steak. Our server reassured me that my steak will be cooked well done and that it was going to be great. For my side I got some asparagus. I have had the asparagus every time I have eaten here and it's always fantastic. It was busy tonight and there were quite a few of us in our group so our food did take a minute to get prepared. But after everything was dropped off, I knew it was worth the wait. Our food looked phenomenal! The gentleman who poured my husband's cognac sauce did a great job, great presentation. I got my beautiful ribeye on a black board placed in front of me. My friend next to me ordered the salmon. On her salmon was a vibrant orchid. It added such an elegant touch to her plate. Everyone's food looked fantastic. This is where I compliment the chef. My ribeye was juicy, flavorful and it had outstanding char marks on it. For my ribeye to be cooked well done, it was so tender. The sauce that was paired with it was tangy and spicy. It was the perfect sauce for my ribeye. The asparagus once again was money. I ate a little more than half of my steak and I look forward to finishing it tomorrow. Dessert was a must after we finished dinner. I have had the fried ice cream pops in the past. They are too good! But the bananas foster was calling my name tonight. Our friends next to us ordered the same dessert. The rest of the party got the fried ice cream pops. The presentation for the bananas foster was magnificent. We dug right in after the flame went out. The bread pudding was divine. The gelato that came on the side was sweet and creamy. Paired together the bread pudding and gelato was the ultimatecombination. As full as I was, I had to finish this lovely dessert. Our start wasn't the best. The hostesses are the first people to set the tone of your dining experience. I'm happy that our server, the vibe and of course the food made up for such horrible first interactions. Our server was on point and so was everyone else who tended to our table. With Barbacoa having such a rich and romantic vibe, it resonates in their food. Everything about tonight was lovely. Looking forward to coming back when it's warmer so we can sit out on the patio by the water. I can't think of a better way to enjoy to have dinner.
Great decor and location, especially with Halloween additions. Service is always top notch at this restaurant and their others. Love their "BOGO" (buy one, get one) drink specials during happy hour. Everyone loved their meals. The rib entree is HUGE (sorry, no pics). Definitely need a to-go box. My carne asada could have used some more seasoning. Chose the hot rock and sauce and even though the sauce is delicious, it doesn't say "carne asada". Could have had some different and additional sides to make your own tacos but still a good dish. Would not order this entree again with all of the other good options. Would some here again.
I've been here three times and I'm always impressed with the atmosphere and experience. We sat in the bar for this visit and had a three course dinner. Started with a few appetizers, and of course had to get the table-side guacamole. It's made custom to heat preference so we got medium this time. Ryan was our server and attentive the entire time. I ordered the salmon for dinner and it was incredible! A few friends of the steak, and it looked great too. We got a couple desserts to share, the ice cream donut and crème brûlée. Overall amazing meal and service.

SO DELICIOUS everything we had was absolutely delicious we started out with guac - they asked how spicy we wanted it which i thought was a nice touch paella was seasoned well, full of flavor and had tons of different proteins seafood mixto was a lemon forward pasta and was perfect to go with the other dishes the new york strip was amazing, love the idea of the hot rock and get the cognac sauce on the side we got the zucchini chips on the side of the steak and they were perfectly crisp! sliced super thin!! Love Barbacoa. This is my second review and I have been there multiple times visiting Idaho and this place does not dissapoint. Aside from the amazing ambiance, I have a couple of reccomendations, although anything you order here will be amazing. Get the "I'm your Huckleberry" cocktail. This seriously is one of the best cocktails I have had. The simplicity of it is what is amazing. It literally tastes like huckleberry water with real huckleberries served in a ice glass. Thats a glass made of ice for those wondering. Truly a great treat. The Watermelon cotton candy I would also reccomend. I love cotton candy and having a watermelon flavor is the best of both worlds! Their mashed potatoes are amazing, yellowtail crudo (highly reccomend), bbq duck quesadilla (highly reccomend) but their hot rock filet is where its all at! read more

First time at Barbacoa with a party of 10. The decor is unique and the wait staff and all servers were 9n their A game. We all had something different and the food came out at the same time and cooked perfectly. We started with the Hamachi appetizer it was delicious. Our friend had the crab and corn bisque which was poured tableside. I had the paella and hubby had the karabuta pork chop with stuffed quail. One family had the 3 # rib eye cooked on the hot rock. It was cooked beautifully. We have leftovers for tomorrow. I thought for the quality it was worth the price. One downfall is it is a large restaurant with mostly large parties and a bar area so it is crowded and noisy. But willing to go back a little earlier to try some more selections from the diverse menu. read more
Traveled to Boise just to eat here and it did not disappoint! The vibe of the whole place makes you feel like a top model being pampered by a wealthy benefactor. Love it. The decor is very unique and posh but keeps the rustic vibe that you would expect from a steak house. It is a lively place, don't expect to have quiet, intimate conversations, this place is full of happy loud customers. We were lucky enough to sit at a table that overlooked the lake on the patio. This was just lovely. Our service was quick and attentive. The plates came out quicker than I was expecting. We ordered the table-side guac. Wow, this is delicious and made before your very eyes. I also ordered the rib appetizer. This made me want the ribs to also be my main course but I figured I would stick to the steak to really test this place out. I ordered the New York and it came on the hot rock. They then pour this sauce over it that lights the thing on fire. This was magic, dinner, and a show! If you are like me, you lean towards a well-done steak, a bit of pink. It came perfect to order and if I wanted it a little more cooked, I just throw it back on the rock and get soothed by the sizzling music. All the sauces that came with it were delicious but not needed. The steak had a flavor all on its own. My wife ordered this tomato basil creamy type pasta with chicken. Wow, this was amazing. Visiting Boise and a friend highly recommended Barbacoa. The food was excellent and our filet was served on a superheated stone. Complimented with a cognac sauce which was 'fired' as it was poured table side. The most memorable thing, however, was the martini presentation! Shaker brought table side and poured into a unique glass. See pic. Service was impeccable and decor is interesting. The only slight negative is the noise level. But it was a Saturday night, bar was packed, and a prom night! Will return! read more

This place is an experience FRFR! The whole establishment is gorgeous and totally random in the middle of Boise! The menu is wild with so many options, it's a little overwhelming. The service is super good, and the wait isn't terrible, but you should definitely make a reservation if you need to be somewhere afterward. The steak we ordered wasn't that great, but everyone around us ordered steak, so it could have just been that cut. Ours was just incredibly chewy. Everything else we had was yummy... but beware, they use ALOT of oil and seasonings on everything, so don't come here on a diet! Price wasn't bad at all for 1 steak and shrimp entree, one huge salad add protein, 2 apps, and 1 soda... $110 plus tip... not bad at all. Highly recommend coming here if you're in Boise! It is off the beaten path of the downtown area, but it is easily walkable, especially if the weather is nice. read more

Lots of fun. Beautiful interior and lovely lake and hill view. Some outside dining. Such a busy restaurant but very efficient. Jill really make out dinner great. Six of us sat in a nice big booth. 3 had beer, 3 had really good iced martinis. Dinner was wonderful. 2. Baked salmon with a very nice fresh cucumber, radish and onion salad. Excellent addition 2 had the flaming rock fillet. Nice, thick and very tasty. The potato comes with it's over displace. Excellent! 1. had the stuffed poblano with Barbacoa meat and sweet potato. Done perfectly. Great sauce. Excellent. 1. pork mole with a tamale. Ate every bite. Highly recommend with restaurant. Have Fun. Eat Well! read more

Bomb as usual! I haven't been in years so I was excited to try their drinks and different items on the menu. My friend ordered us the Mango Mojitos to start, which were amazing. Our bartender was a bit heavy handed on the liquor (that's a compliment ) but the drinks did the damn job. HA! Next we had the Chill which is served in an ice "glass" with a mango popsicle. Again, heavy handed. Our last drink was the Guava Mojito and when I tell you these were so bomb, not too overpowered by anything else, ooof, chefs kiss. The guava was nice and sweet and paired so perfectly with the mint and lime. Definitely my choice of drink from now on. The food was amazing. My new favorite starter has to be the artichoke fritters. Delish. One thing I will say though, I did order the oysters and they were so teeny weeny girl, like be for real. All 6 of them were equivalent to maybe 2 medium sized oysters and I put that on the ocean.. they're called the Kumamoto Oysters (?) but its giving Kumamini, okay? Overall, amazing meal, great service, cute ass bathroom, and yummy food! Will come again and will drink those damn guava mojitos!!! Amazing vibes, but my blind ass did have to use my flashlight to look at that menu lmao. So my only suggestion would be to maybe bring like a headlamp or candles if you too, be struggling. read more
This place is an amazing experience. I was there with a large party in a private room with limited menu. The service was great and the food was delicious. I was told their martinis, guacamole and filet were there signature items so I tried all three...did not disappoint. Their trout was delicious too. Loved the views and decor. This place is amazing. I bring clients to this place all the time but never had the chance to experience it myself. The atmosphere is amazing and romantic! I took my wife out for a night in Boise and we experienced barbacoa. It's a beautiful place and the food is beyond amazing far worth the expense. The service is incredible. Barbacoa truly lives up to the hype. The menu will give you plenty of options to choose from regardless of your taste palette. The environment is absolutely gorgeous and the patio seating with the water in Mountain View is absolutely breathtaking. Make sure you make reservations at least a week in advance, this place is most definitely worth the wait! read more

First off, the food was great, and the servers were very active in making sure we were topped off on drinks and such. This place is reservation only unless you find a spot at one of the two bars. We did so and the only available seats were underneath a cool looking cascading candle. You get what you pay for and the food was fantastic. We had two drinks, one appetizer, two entrees, and two desserts for $134, plus tip. One dessert was underwhelming (the Profiteroles, couldn't taste any hazelnut until the swan because the 4 pastries didn't have enough of the creme) but the rest of the food was on point. Everything was great until after I had paid and we stood up to leave. That cool looking candle thing had been dripping wax onto my girlfriend's dress on her hip and butt. The dress may be ruined, I'm not sure, but I doubt it's easy to get wax out of clothing. I told the guy who was grilling in front of us and he just widened his eyes then went back to working. Didn't tell anyone or apologize or anything. I couldn't find our server so I wrote a note on the receipt explaining the wax and getting no response from the employee I told. I was angry at that point. I told the hostess at the entrance as we were leaving and had my gf turn so she could see the waxy backside of her dress. She said, "I'm so sorry!" We stood there for a few seconds. Then I rolled my eyes and walked out. Hostess said "Have a great rest of your night!" I don't go out and spend $161 to have the decor ruin my girlfriend's favorite dress and get one no-response then a second "I'm so sorry have a great day." Get your manager next time that happens to someone, because it certainly won't be us. I've paid far less and had far better error correction conversations. I have no incentive to return somewhere that doesn't value making things right. I'm angry and upset, my girlfriend's favorite dress may be ruined because of your decor, and you didn't even try to talk to us about it. I would have gone to McDonald's if I wanted that kind of service. read more

Some locals told me about Barbacoa Grill, and I'm so glad they did because it was a happenin' spot for happy hour! Barbacoa Grill has a lot to offer, with its over-the-top decor and entrees. The space is huge. The main bar area was packed by the time we arrived, but we were still able to sit nearby and participate in happy hour. Not only is Barbacoa a popular spot for happy hour, but it seemed to be the place for celebratory dinners. There were quite a few groups, celebrating a birthday, as the dessert provided by the restaurant is handmade cotton candy, with a candle in the middle. Yeah, it's fancy up in here! For happy hour the deal is buy one, get one/BOGO. Two drinks for one, which is an awesome deal. Just make sure you get a drink you love because it has to be the same drink for this BOGO special. And practically the entire drink menu is eligible for BOGO, as long as the drink is less than $15. I ordered the top shelf margarita, which was solid. It was definitely heavy on the tequila and had me tipsy by the time we were done. My friend ordered the house margarita with mango. We both shared the table-side guacamole, which as the name indicates, is prepared at your table. They use one and a half avocados to make this guac, and customize it to preferred spice level. It was awesome! And you can get a refill of chips for free. Barbacoa was a great place for happy hour, so I can only imagine how nice it is for dinner service, which many seem to come here for. Let's just say we saw steaks being lit on fire at the table. Yeah, that's the kind of show you can expect at Barbacoa. The next time I'm in Boise I'll have to try it for myself! But I'm glad we were able to check out this great restaurant and enjoy happy hour. read more
This was my first time here after hearing so many raves. The atmosphere is awesome. We sat in a booth under the Medusa statue which is really cool with lighting coming from her "hair". We had the table side guacamole which was delicious. My dinner was the Carne Asada which was also delicious. The meat was very tender. We tried the Creme Brûlée for dessert. The presentation was gorgeous. It was good but the banana fritters that came with it were even better. I gave 4 stars because the price is high. I knew when going there but still. I also rated down for service. Waitstaff drove us crazy. Too much. Just let us enjoy our meal and conversation. The hostesses were sweet and offered to take our picture when they saw us struggling with a selfie. It's a great place overall. read more

we had the best dinner experience at Barbacoa a few nights ago!! We took friends from out of town because we knew the food and atmosphere would be fantastic as it always is. But our server, Connor Hyatt took us to the next level. Our friend has a very dry sense of humor but Connor picked it up immediately and just took it and gave it back!! He is amazing and a true asset to Barbacoa. We drove home the whole time talking about how much fun and how good the food was. Went to barbacoa for dinner last night to ring in the new year. The food, as always, was delicious. I had the idaho trout and my hubby got his usual hot rock steak. I was very surprised with the trout. I normally go for salmon but I wanted to try something different and I am very glad I did. I love their salmon but I was blown away with the trout. It had a tangy, salty sweet sauce with capers and it was cooked perfectly. Cheesy broccoli and chile rice came with it. I also got the zucchini chips and Andrew got the Mac and cheese. Both were very very good. The only downside was that there were peas in the mac and cheese and we are not a fan of that. Just give me cheese and noodles I need my carbs! ;) For drinks we got the La Pina and the Bella. Both drinks were very good but I think my favorites are still the 'I'm your huckleberry' and the 'xxx'. For dessert we got the flourless Belgian chocolate cake and OMG sooooooooooo good. So rich... so...mmmmmmm. The staff are always super friendly and professional. We try to make it a point to go to Barbacoa at least once a year as it is definitely a fav.
