Crab cakes were very tasty and no fillers and sautéed perfectly.Do go ahead and order the breads because the dinner roll, pumpkin and jalapeño corn bread are to die for! Here for the next 4 weeks and will go back often for the crab cakes. The reviewer who was disgusted with the air freshener , I think must have been overly sensitive because , I absolutely hate the smell of those things, but once you pass through the second set of doors , you don't really smell it in the dining room. The bread basket with the jalapeño cornbread and ever so subtly sweet pumpkin bread is reason enough to visit. Although known for their crab cakes there are better ones available on the island stacked higher with less breading. Not that these aren't good, they are. Big bold flavors always lead us to the more traditional entrees like meatloaf and pork chops. Salads are fresh, cold and crisp. Boiled shrimp are served equally as teeth chattering cold. They have diverse menu with something for every pallet. Service is agreeable even if a wait is encountered at front door which is usually they case. They pour a stiff drink while you wait. Good beer selection too , but the best thing not on the menu may well be those hot pumpkin cakes. No visit to the island is ever complete without at least one visit. read more

I was really expecting more or a better experience, based on all the positive yelp reviews. We stopped here at 2:15pm on a cold Saturday in January. Only 7 tables were occupied but we waited a long time to be seated. Five staffers walked by to say "we will be with you in a minute." I had a bowl of she-crab soup for $7.99. Big bowl, nice flavor but I think it was leftover from another day as it was a big lukewarm blob. My son had a super greasy chicken fried steak with dirty rice and cold French fries for $13.99. Our waiter Pete was very nice but took a long time to refill our drinks and get a side of ranch, even though it wasn't busy . The location is a really neat place that reminded us a lot of Rehoboth Beach, DE. The place itself has the feel of a diner but the menu is a simple two sided offering unlike the maze of items at a diner that we would be used to in the tristate area. On the food side the 'She' Crab Soup is a hit and the 7 oz. crab cake 'Eastern Shore' style (I guess meaning it looks more like a hamburger shape than a ball) was really great. It was filling enough to only be able to eat the Broccoli & Rice and basically not touch the fries on the plate. For dessert we all sampled the Chocolate "Stuff" which is really fantastic and I would describe as a chocolate lava cake put in a blender for a blink of a spin -- just enough to mix it up a bit. Perfectly situated in the middle of town - easily accommodates larger parties. Most Tables seem to sit 6+. We had party of six. Bread that everyone talked about was meh. Bread basket was good, especially the cornbread. We ordered two soups; crab and potato.. The crab was served hot but had pieces of shell in it. We weren't too thrilled about that. The potato soup was served not too hot, but it was delicious. For our entrees we ordered the chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes and green beans, and a fried catfish sandwich with fries. I should have ordered the catfish sandwich! My meal was okay, but I could tell the green beans were out of a can. The catfish sandwich was delicious though. The host who sat us was very kind, but our waitress seemed to be an airhead. I wish our host was the one serving us! All in all, I would recommend this place to a friend. We were introduced to this restaurant by my DC's late Aunt Cis. Oh how she loved their crab cakes and the beautiful river scenery. Often boats sailed by as we enjoyed outdoor seating. Barbara Jean's is Southern comfort food, e.g. meatloaf, pot roast, chicken fried steak and baskets filled with bread. While the menu promotes their crab cakes as THE signature item, I cannot say that what they offer is haute cuisine when it comes to this crustacean. Try them if you must, but I prefer their more home style items mentioned above. Skip any appetizers when you are a BJs. The entrees and basket of bread will force you to take home leftovers. A final couple of thoughts. The basket of bread is really a cartful of bread! The pumpkin bread in the basket is fantastic, but it's really a dessert. Eat every piece offered! My husband and I have eaten there several times. The food is good and and the employees are friendly and polite. After a day at the beach we were very hungry and Barbara Jean's hit the spot. Starting with the homemade pumpkin bread -yum! Then I had an appetizer of coconut shrimp (lots of delicious breading and coconut) and my daughter had the 5 oz. crab cake with a yummy dill sauce. She had chicken fried chicken that she loved. So far so.....busy.. On first sight I noticed that their entrance is very tight.. like extremely narrow with 4 doors swinging open & closed for people going and coming. Its very dangerous actually. I think maybe they were trying to save money and use the exit door as an emergency exit instead of making another way for customers of different sizes carrying or pushing their children in extra large strollers &/ or Baby seat carriers easy access. Instead you have to wait in line to leave..( What tha.. Why) seriously no fooling. The only time you generally wait to leave is after church service and generally you wait to be seated if its busy at a restaurant or a buffet. I have another question.. Why is there no room or particular seating area for you to wait to be seated. You literally wait by the very narrow (Only ) entrance and accedentally block the customers trying to get in, or you stand in the hallway by tge womens restroom and the bar blocking the waitresses on accident trying to take drinks to their tables.. Why? Anyway thats my honest review on that. Now down to business. Our waitress Megan, she seems to be on a roll buuutt... shes very busy . About her service & food preparation, display & taste will be next. On hot days as a kid, you've always enjoyed large drinks and home cooking. This is exactly what you will notice through the large glass windows of Barbara Jean's as you walk down Mallery Street. Large glasses of ice cold sweet tea and the smell of homemade entrees can lure any passerby in. Location and atmosphere: It is located in the main touristy part of St. Simons Island and although often a crowded area during the summer months, I often try to take my corgi and get outside seating as its a great spot to people watch. Inside can get rather loud, especially when large tour buses come through, but you are still able to hold a conversation without raising your voice to terribly much. Service: As stated before, I am a regular and a man of predictability occasionally changing it up. So for me, the service is great. I have yet to have a bad experience with any of the employees and have often seen Barbara Jean working on busier days. I have noticed that ruder costumers tend to get less friendly (but by no means unprofessional) service. So, just be nice to them and you're more than likely to have a far more pleasant experience. This is good food near the coast and should never be rushed. Food: You are provided not one not two but three different kinds of bread (jalapeno cornbread, pumpkin bread, and yeast rolls) complimentary. I adore the She Crab soup with a little bit of hot sauce and would love to have the recipe. I also love the Chicken tender platter but plan to take some home as they are massive as well as also having two sides. If my pants don't pop I can occasionally eat the bread pudding as a dessert. I have never had a bad meal here. Hands down my favorite restaurant. Price: The pricing for my favorites plates starts at about 6 dollars for the soup. The HUGE tender plate runs around 14 and for the bread pudding, it runs about 6 dollars. And these prices are about average for what you will expect to pay. And this is more than plenty for any one person to eat. So my corgi tends to get a piece of chicken slipped under the table. read more

Thursday we ate at Barbara Jean's Restaurant in St. Simon's Island. This restaurant serves freshly made Southern food which tastes like homemade. We had the soup of the day, Chicken with Rice soup which was full of chicken, vegetables and rice. Delicious. My wife had the fried cod with cole slaw and squash casserole. It was very good. I had the chicken fried chicken which was a huge breast with collards and cabbage. Everything was fantastic and the service by Big Pete was wonderful.
