Ok, this is a small bar restaurant on Main Street in Brockport, a small town on the Erie Canal. We are on a 4 day bike ride from buffalo to Syracuse, so on the look out for good spots for lunch. They have a few plastic tables outside, which were fine. No table service, which is clear from the sign at the bar! Ordered a couple of sandwiches, tasted some beers before picking ones, got our bicycle water bottles refilled. Really friendly service. Sandwiches are large, even the half size. The balboa is tasty, even if the roast beef is not rare once it's been grilled. And the wet poor fries were good. Cole slaw was a bit plain, could have used some lemon. Inside it's a typical bar, narrow, dark, with a row of booths. Outside we had a nice breeze. Twenty or so beers on tap. Nice variety. Ended up being a great place to rest our legs on the ride to Rochester! read more

I went here for my little birthday party get together. And the bartender meg cuts me off from one drink and take my 50 dollars and she wouldn't give me back my change till I ate something so I ordered the balboa sandwich it was dry and the fries were all tiny so then she gives me a tiny shot and cuts me off again but she was cool with my friend buying me drinks. And I called twice and each time they said ok we will have the owner call you and they never called.and she was cool with us smoking weed on the sidewalk right outside wow dont wanna go to this small place with weird people! read more

This is always a more of a nostalgic review more than anything... the place has not changed in 35 years... same old stale smell.... Great beers on tap. The cooks are college kids who are not trained chef but they do a great job. Epic sandwich, the balboa, and sports on 24/7. The copper ceiling can date back over 100 years... Went to barbers after my 12 hour nursing shift on a Thursday, and when I went in there a whole hour before they said they closed online I was told they were don't serving. all while there were multiple people at the bar. not only was she being rude but the costumers that were inside were also being rude to me. i have always loved the service and atmosphere but not tonight. maybe we need to rethink our bartenders on Wednesday nights. read more

On a canal trip, stopped here for lunch. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but we had quite good food. My husband's potato skins had a bit too much cheese for my husband but probably just right for most fans of the dish. Most of us had a variety of their Balboa sandwich, oh so good! Sandwiches on garlic Italian bread. Mmmmm. Half a sandwich was plenty filling, and their homemade chips, still warm from the fryer, were delicious. They were nice enough to serve me a half-pour beer. Order at counter, no table service, then sit outside to enjoy the nice weather! The only downside is with the bridge under repair, all the usual Main Street traffic turned left at the corner where we were eating. Barber's Grill & Tap Room has been on our must try list for a while because it smells so great every time my son and I come to visit the retro gaming store in Brockport. It did not disappoint. We sat at the sidewalk tables and had the Texas BBQ Bacon Burger which had some killer sauce. Fried Mac & Cheese appetizer was also great. Food was ok, but the bartender lies about your total. If you pay with card it's more, but if you pay cash she still charges you the credit card amount. When I asked for my receipt she had that deer in the headlights look and stimbled with words. That is when i knew i was being ripped off. As Clara Peller said in the 80s, "Where's the beef". A ridiculously thin patty gets lost in the thick bun. Completely disappears once you add lettuce, tomato, etc. Completely out of balance and painfully overpriced for such a thin patty. read more

Barbers Grill has local charm that hasn't changed in decades. I went back a couple times recently for a reunion with some college friends and It's essentially the same as it was 30 years ago, but with some nice improvements. The food is decent (it's bar food what do you expect), but a great selection of craft beers on tap. I don't know why I stayed away so long. Go early and the crowd is mostly locals, around 9:30p the college crowd shows up, but not in an obnoxious way. We had a great time. read more

My daughter and her husband just moved to Hamlin, so we drive through Brockport on our way there. They introduced me to Barber's and what can I say... Yum! I love the Balboa sandwiches. I got the poutine Balboa and it was fantastic. Brought half of it home for lunch the next day. It's a small little place with a couple of booths. You order food at the bar and can get free popcorn while you wait. I'd definitely recommend this little "hole in the wall" restaurant! read more

Disappointment would be the best word to describe my experience here. We tried this place for the first time Monday, we did an online order and arrived at the time it said it would be ready. When my husband walked into pick up the order, the woman behind the counter told him it wasn't ready yet, figured no biggie it might be a few minutes...No..The woman then tells my husband her boss tells her to not start any online order until 45 mins after they receive the order...We waited in our car for about 20 minutes until we got the call the food was done. Oh I forgot to mention, this was an $80 order. Then we got home and were excited to sit down and eat, We ordered 3 Balboa sandwiches. Supposed to come on garlic bread, not a single sandwich had garlic bread. One sandwich was a poutine balboa, the sandwich did not have gravy on it at all. The Moody Buffalo Chicken balboa tasted funny my husband said, not sure what seasoning was on it but he said it tasted like the what gasoline would taste like. None of the fries were seasoned at all, not even salt or pepper. The curly fries were soggy - which is super strange if they were just made recently. The best thing about the order was the appetizers, which I'm glad we got because that was what we had for dinner. We got the shrimp and fried ravioli, which was the best part of the order. Overall for the price of the food, the quality just wasnt there. Also they description of the portions , we expected a huge sandwich, they were on normal long hoagie rolls. There was no Challenge for a normal sized sandwich. I would like to mention the front staff was very nice, and I don't hold the polciy made by the "manager/boss" against them. The fish fry was great. You know the shell ice cream topping that you drizzle on and a few seconds later it's a hard shell? Now imagine a fresh piece of battered fish with that same texture. Portion was good, fries were HOT and crisp. Coleslaw wasn't anything to write home about. Tartar sauce on the other hand, was obviously freshly prepared and a bit sweet. Plenty of beers on tap. Unique set up where you seat yourself/order as wanted at the bar. Outdoor seating is available. Good bartenders/servers. Next time I will definitely try the balboa sandwich. read more

Do not go here. Not only did the "security guard" grab my arm to get my ID instead of asking when I first walked in to get FOOD not a drink. Then I order one order of pizza rolls for 10.50. My sister gets the same thing and after we hear the price we guess we're getting 6-8 rolls in an order. After waiting 50 minutes for our order we finally get it and see there's FOUR ROLLS IN ONE ORDER.... For 10 dollars..... disgusted. Pulling up a seat at the bar, the bartenders were prompt and knowledgeable about all the new beers on tap. We were able to sample a few as well which was really nice. For food, the balboas are what Barbers are known for! We chose the jack chicken balboa with homemade curly fries. It was perfectly seasoned and just melted in your mouth! I've tried their regular fries, the waffle fries, and the curly fries but they are always unseasoned and bland. The fish is warm, but the fries are cold and tasteless. This place reminds me a lot of my "local" at college... which is to say, LOUD during games and even when there's no game on, no frills, booths, freezing bathroom, semi-crowded (we were there during college break so I expect it's even more crowded during school) food that's really bad for you and ...fun. That being said, I LOVED It! This place has continuously been in business since... God, what year did the girl tell me?? 1929? 1939?? And it still has some of the touches from the bygone era. Take these weird looking things on the bar.. (pic attached).. they are apparently the ORIGINAL "beer taps" the plastic part Of this would be filled with beer and the taps were attached to the metal tops. So cool that they are still there! They are shown in the old pic on the front of the menu.. u can see they are full of beer. Surprisingly, this place has a Really large beer selection for a bar of this type.. both Mr. "I am the beer connoisseur" caveman bf and I found some great choices.. I had a cider I've never heard of & of course I can't remember the name of it.. he had some yummy dark craft thing that made him happy. We went there Primarily to try the sandwich they are famous for called a "Balboa". God that was a good way to use a cheat day.. grilled garlic roll, grilled chopped meat (turkey, steak or bologna) used to create one of many versions of this sandwich. All manner of ways to top it. I chose a half "Old Timer" which was grilled roast Beef, horseradish mayo and mozzarella.. I added grilled onions to it & asked for tots for my side. Um... goooood!!! Caveman had a whole turkey, ham & Swiss I think, also with tots. I almost wish I got the full one so I'd have more left over the next day!! We fully enjoyed the sandwiches, were pleasantly surprised by the beer selection and frankly,by the time I finished my second cider I didn't notice the noise as much... maybe 'cuz it was like I spent a nite pretending I was back in time... a LONG time ago. will be back to try more variations on the Balboa. read more

Awful. The first time we went, it was just okay..tonight was awful. It took forever for our waitress to come over, we had to ask for her. She finally came, we ordered a round of drinks along with our food. Took almost an hour for our app to come out and our sandwiches came out immediately after. The cook brought our food and our waitress was no where to be found. We finally saw her and flagged her down for another round of drinks. We had finished our drinks and food and our waitress was behind the bar. She never once came over to check on us. I finally ended up going to the bar to ask for our bill. She brought over a drink only bill, which had extra drinks on it we didn't even order. I disputed the charges and she went back to re-ring our bill. The next bill comes which has our food and and drinks, along with extra drinks we didn't even order, she said they were basically the same price (which they weren't), and was arguing with me about our bill. The cook finally came over and helped with taking the baskets from the table and corrected our bill. I would never go back to this place after our second bad experience. Lived in this area over 30 years and gotta admit Barbers has some of the best food in Brockport and exceptionally large and good selection of beer . Try their Balboa or a cheeseburger with some hot sauce....you really can't beat it if you're hungry. I am told the shrimp is exceptional too. Very comfortable bar/restaurant and staff really accommodating. Numerous TVs with sports. I recommend sitting at the bar for a good lunch and conversation with the owners/servers, or a local wettin' his whistle! Also, about a block away (east of main street, south side of the canal) is the visitors center where bike tourists can sometimes camp, shower and check out Brockport which is a pretty cool little college town. read more
