Had a haircut with Anna Rose. While she was a great conversationalist and very sweet, I told her to cut about 2-3 inches to get rid of the dead ends. However, from past my boobs to just barely having the longest layers past my shoulders is much more than 2-3 inches. My girlfriend went to get her hair cut before graduation, she was hesitant and nervous at first but Melissa (who was specifically requested for the cut due to a friend's recommendation) made her feel comfortable and welcome. I debated writing this because the people who work here are beyond lovely - truly so sweet and delightful - but I honestly had the worst haircut of my life here. I've been upset about my hair daily for the last several months, since getting my haircut. I asked for face framing layers, and I got 2 thick chunks of hair cut on either side of my face way too short - I have to wear my hair back everyday because it's such a bad look when it's down. My hair is ruined until it really grows out (which could take a year, if not more). I have no idea how to fix my hair unless I cut it short, which I do not want. I was honestly in such shock after the cut that I didn't know what to say, so I rushed out and cried in my car. This was my first haircut since COVID, and I was so excited to treat myself, but I completely regret it. The only reason I gave the salon 2 stars is because the people here really, really are great, but please do not give people a cut like this ever again. read more

Theresa does an amazing job! After scouring the internet and Instagram for a talented balayage stylist, I found Theresa. I was nervous to color my hair and wanted to make sure to find the most qualified person to do it. She ended up doing a flawless balayage on my hair. I feel like I can trust her with any color or hair style, likewise I trust her to tell me when something wouldn't work and steer me in the right direction. We always have great conversation which I really appreciate. I haven't been styling my hair as often lately because of covid and the world being upside-down but I look forward to seeing her more regularly as things (hopefully) begin to normalize. I will continue to rely on Theresa for all my hair styling needs as long as we are both in Portland. Novare Salon has a great location in Sellwood. It is just a couple minutes down the road from my house in Milwaukie. The salon is always well kept and clean. I've been meaning to post this review but have not yet had the chance to until this morning. I'm a college student who doesn't have tons of money to spend, so it's often intimidating for me to actually book an appointment for a salon and get a haircut rather than attempt to cut my hair myself or by a friend. I expected this haircut to be far better than those previous options...I was wrong. First of all, the staff did not talk to me unless absolutely necessary. I thought this was odd. Usually, at a hair salon, conversation is pretty standard. I felt like they wanted to rush me in and out as quickly as possible. Secondly, the hair cut that I wanted was a long bob, and since I already have shoulder length hair I just asked for some choppy layers. I showed some pictures, which the resulting hair cut did not even remotely resemble. But, my main issue was that my hair was ridiculously uneven. It seemed like very little effort was put into making my hair look how I wanted. It took twenty minutes max, and when I got back to my house, my hair looked so awful I wanted to cry. My roommate, a college student with NO hair experience, was able to even out the layers afterwards and do a better job than the hair dresser, at least making my hair look decent. I don't remember exactly who cut my hair, but I don't think I'll be back, because, to me, the price was not worth the results. read more

Just had a cut and color from Leanna Taft, and I could not be more happy with the results! I came in with very scary hair. My hair was green and crunchy; two toned blonde with MAJOR chlorine damage. [Just moved into a new building last Fall and my hair was becoming unrecognizable to me with all the chlorine damage.] Leanna had a an impossible task of fixing my hair, but she did an incredible job! How did she do it???Also, she is very kind, patient, and has a great personality. I was holding my breath during the cut and color because I figured my hair damage was too great and I would need to cut it all off. Not so! I still have a solid head of hair. Phew! read more

I can't believe I've not yet reviewed Novare! I'm almost 38, have lived in multiple cities and states and have NEVER had a stylist I love as much as Tess. Cut, color, you name it. I would trust her to do anything...seriously. Actually, it's not just Tess; EVERYONE rocks there. Friendly, funny, cool, amazing. I almost can't believe this gem is in my hood. I've been coming here for almost 3 years and I actually get my hair done more frequently now (I shoot for every 8-10 weeks and I don't even have super short hair!) because it's such a great place to take a break & come out feeling awesome. Kelsey is an absolute color magician. She is cautious enough to not over process or make crazy, rash, changes all at once, and yet still delivers what is asked for. She is funny, easy to be around, and real. I have known her for years and she has been doing my hair for about 7 years straight. We have gone through short hair styles, to dark, to blond, to post-baby-make-me-look-fab-before-I-freak-out(twice), as well as cutting my husband's hair exclusively the two times per year he can get himself out of the house for personal grooming. My mom happily travels four hours to have her hair colored by Kelsey. Really, not enough good words to say! Not to mention, the salon provides complimentary wine, beer, lattes, etc. Sellwood is an adorable neighborhood, so everything about this place is worth the visit. read more

She fixed the problems I had from a not so talented hair hair dresser She was able to take long bangs that were way to heavy and incorporate them into the layers. I was pretty happy with my current stylist when my Daughter recommended I go see Theresa at Novare, who has been cutting her hair for years. I decided to give her a try spontaneously on a day off and I'm so glad I did. I'm 58, with medium length natural grey hair, I typically like a layered shoulder length haircut. I absolutely loved the way she cut and styled my hair. My husband doesn't usually notice things like "Hair" but he sure did when I came home yesterday and commented how much he liked it. I got a cut and balayage from Leanna a few weeks ago and I LOVE IT. I'm a really tough audience because I have really fine hair, but A LOT of it. Leanna was one of the only people to ever keep my hair from becoming an absolute tangled disaster, and helped me find products that I'll actually use in my hair. Leanna did such a good job on my hair. I went much blonder than I usually am, so it took a day to get used to it, but I LOVE IT. The salon is intimate and very nice. I went to this salon after reading the reviews here. I asked for Mikayla but she was booked until after Xmas and I was at that point with my hair that I couldn't take it a minute longer. The receptionist suggested a new stylist that had recently started working there. I thought they would both be new to me so I should just try it out. It's hair.. it grows. I am so glad I did. I believe her name is Lilliana. She is young and only has three years experience. She gave me such a great haircut. My thick wild grey hair was to the middle of my back. I'm glad she ignored my request to just cut it all off. It is all one length just above my shoulders. I love it. I bought some product and she also gave me a bottle of product for being a new customer. I look forward to my next haircut in February. I would recommend her to anyone. Last Saturday (7/18) I had an appt at 5:00 for a haircut with Tess (who has cut my hair once before with no problems). I got a confirmation vm the day before and had been waiting 3 wks for the haircut/color consult. Super excited. So i get there and Tess isn't there - "didn't you get a phone call?" Asks one of the two women who are there. I had a missed call from earlier that day - So i listen to my vm and theres a msg saying Tess has had a cancellation and could i come at 4:30 instead? No. But I'm here now and its 4:50. Then gal #1 says "she wasn't sure you were coming - she hasn't heard from you". I usually don't call between setting and keeping my appt. and i got that confirm call.... "She assumed you had gone somewhere else because you were anxious for the cut" (I had asked her to call if there was a cancellation) yes, making my 3 wk wait for nothing that much more disappointing. It was probably obvious that i was aghast that a professional would brush off an appt like this so the other person (gal #2 offered "she had to go pick up her son - lets get you a new appt scheduled". Why would i reschedule with someone who doesn't give a rip about wasting my time? I think she wanted to bug out early on a Sat; wagering i wasn't going to show up. So i left. Sitting in my car - one of the women called and said she had just finished her last appt and was done for the day but would stay and cut my hair if i would like. I saw her client leave - she had a cute cut and looked happy. So i agreed and Mikayla saved the day. She gets 5 stars for the great cut and for stepping up in a most fabulous way. I enjoyed the cut and everything about her. Tess must know i came for my appt so i thought I'd give her a week to "woman up" and call with an apology. Crickets. A week - nothing. So unprofessional - who does that? Unfortunately Mikayla shares her 5 stars with Tess' zero stars and Novarre get the average - which i realize would be 2.5 but you cant give half stars and my disappointment in Tess weighs a little heavier. read more

After years of searching for a stylist I can actually trust and rely on, I have finally found Dani at Novare. I have been to more than ten salons in the Portland area and have always left disappointed - not only did I not connect with the stylist, but they didn't really LISTEN to me. I can't think of a single time that I didn't leave the salon and go home to restyle my hair after a cut and color. Not at Novare. It's a small and cozy shop (a nice change from the huge and echoey hair-factories downtown) that retains refreshing professionalism and amazing talent. Dani took one look at my hair and knew exactly what to do. She asked me tons of questions to get a feel for what I really wanted, made some suggestions and totally delivered. I have very long naturally curly hair that always feels frumpy. But Dani was able to give me a romantic, edgy cut using long layers and the color was PERFECT. Tess can work some magic with color! I'm a natural blonde and never had to highlight my hair until moving to dark and rainy Portland. Now I need some help once or twice during the winter to keep my blonde looking bright year round. Tess was very receptive to my pleas for natural looking highlights. Had a pretty good experience for my first time. The salon is cute and stylish, they give you tea or coffee and a cookie while you wait. My stylist was super nice and I liked her work. The only reason they don't get 5 stars was because they called me the morning I had my appointment and tried to get me to changed it. I get that my appointment wasn't going to bring in a lot of $ compared to whomever else they were trying to fit in, but my schedule was tight and I needed the time I booked for a reason. read more
