I have a secret love for this place. If I ever find myself in Westwood, I sit in my booth, look at the photos on the table, enjoy a beer, and some greasy bar food. Then make up for it with a pressed juice the next day. Their happy hour is amazing, they have breakfast all day, good beers, and lots of tvs. I tried their savi b last night and it was ok. I ended up getting a vodka soda. On a Friday night, I saw lots of young lovers on dates, groups of grad students, and some locals. I even saw the most stuffed animal looking dog I have ever seen in my life. Amazing. He was sitting in the far back of the second floor. They also have shuffle board, which no one was playing. They had a sign that I interpreted as - dancing not allowed. So, don't come here for that. Come here to sit and watch a game. When I go back, I'll try the shuffleboard, and more bar food. read more

I should have known better, I should have said no. But what my grandson wants, he gets, and he wanted onion rings and some beans. We had no intention of going to this place, the Hollywood store is well known by locals that their past treatment of the LGBT community is enough to stay away, but moving on. We were on our way to a play in Westwood Village where this location is and we found a parking spot near by. My grandson saw the place and was insistent. I caved. I always do. First, the service is rude, slow and down right obnoxious. I don't know if she was worried we were not going to spend a fortune because I had a kid with me and did not order alcohol, but she just walked away from the menus were given to us and she said what would we like from the bar and I said nothing thanks. 30 minutes later after I had to ask someone to get her she showed up and said what do you need. Anyway, we ordered burgers, onion rings, beans and fries. It was awful. The onion rings were burned and had so much breading I could swear they were the cheap frozen ones you get at the market. If they are made there, the cook should be trained. The fries were fine, nothing special but fine. The beans were runny and my grandson who loves beans did not eat them. The burgers were over cooked despite me asking for as rare as possible. Now, I know that many places will not make rare burgers because of health concerns and that is fine. Burnt is not fine. Their 3 bean veggie chili ALWAYS hits the spots. It is the perfect edge of spice to an already flavorful chili. It comes jam packed with cheese and avocado and some sturdy chips for dipping. My friends and I went here last night and were promptly served by our really kind server. They made sure we had water throughout and often checked in to make sure everything was well. Stopped in to have a drink at the bar while waiting for a friend, asked her what kind of white wine do you have by the glass? She said Chardonnay, I don't know and threw me a menu. Then she proceeded to point and said it's going to be under wine you can see what you want. I ordered a glass of wine, never heard from her again. She is horrible horrible horrible. Came on a Wednesday at 8:30 for trivia night! It was pretty crowded and mostly college students, but we were able to find bar stools (it was seat yourself). Not sure about the food because we didn't get a chance to try it, but the trivia was a lot of fun and I had a great mojito! Trivia winners will get their bar tab paid and the team in second place will get a $25 gift card to Barney's Beanery. The trivia is provided by Big Happy Trivia and it was cool that there are so many screens around so it was easy for them to display the questions. There were 6 rounds of trivia and answers are collected by filling out paper forms and then turning them in for each round. read more

Excellent place to watch a game. We came here for the Dodger World Series Game 6. The place was on fire with excitement. No one seat available so we stood the entire time. They have 2 levels with different rooms/areas each with a different personality. The bartenders here on level 1 are the most experienced I have seen at any bar anywhere. Both of these guy could be consultants on Bar Rescue. If more bars had bartenders with the skill, efficiency, and personality as these two, going to bars would be more fun. They have Shiner Bock beer here if you are from Texass. Prices reasonable for the area. Beers are approximately 5.00. Staff are nice people. This is my new go to bar for events. Hey, what happened to all the cartoon dicks in the men's room?!? It used be covered floor to ceiling in dicks; there must have been over 1000 cartoon dicks in there! In fact, one of my greatest joys in life USED TO BE wandering down to that bathroom and just tracing my dick on the wall. Well, not anymore! I liked the ambience: it was perfect for watching a game with plenty of TVs and other game-watchers around to make conversation with. The service was quick and attentive. However, we tried out a couple of spots to sit at (choosing between bar or table), and both surfaces were pretty sticky, which was a bit unsettling. And the food was pretty average. It's a no from me. I have been here twice, and each time I leave feeling a little sick from the food. If you want to just grab drinks, go ahead, but I don't recommend eating here. The last time I went I tried a fall inspired cider which was nice, but the appetizers we ordered were far from appetizing. We tried their "pizza fries" which are cold fries topped with marinara sauce, pepperoni, and shredded mozzarella that wasn't even melted. We also tried taquitos with an unknown meat inside. It's not just me either, I know a few people who refuse to eat at Barney's anymore. Service is also pretty slow but I recognize that they are busy. The new paradigm of my life provides more freedom to attend events then I used to enjoy. Somehow I stumbled across a social media shout out to a new documentary on Mikhail Gorbachev, last leader of the Soviet Union. Having a keen interest in the end of the cold war and the subsequent state of international affairs it was of great interest to me. As the screening I planned to attend was in the early evening I did some cyber-sleuthing as to nearby dinner options. For years when traveling through West Hollywood I had spotted Barney's Beanery (a venerable SoCal institution) and had always meant to try it. Now fate was putting me on the doorstep of one. On the ground floor a lot of the seating is bar stools, not my forte given my weight. But a small table near the back provide ideal if snug. I had a bit of time to kill before my ride home arrived. So I lingered over the menu selecting an appetizer. The Frito Pie intrigued me. First because it provided a chance to try their chili, one of the specialties. Also a friend who is a foodie told me of the famed version of this dish served at the Five and Dime General Store in Santa Fe NM. As I was in no position anytime soon to go to Santa Fe this was an opportunity to try at least Barney's take on it. It only took a few minutes after I ordered for it to be served. Unlike Santa Fe (which has it in a Frito bag) this is plated, corn chips with chili and melted cheese atop it, sour cream and salsa on the side. I have to say it was a fun treat, not overly spicy but a blossoming delight to the taste buds from all the different textures and flavors. A bonus was the satisfying crunch of the Fritos. It proved a perfect choice as a first course leaving me with a smile. Now I undertook a leisurely perusal of the entrees. They have a very full menu with many appealing items. Choosing which to select is no easy task. Finally I settled on barbeque pork sandwich with a side of fries. The sandwich was tasty with sauce, meat and cole slaw on a bun perfectly balanced. Bbq sauce was tangy, not too spicy. Great fries -- crisp, not too salty, generous portion. Iced tea full bodied. When I am in the area I will return. read more

The sweet, savory jam tasted like a blood sacrifice from one of Santa's elves. The buffalo ranch burger made one of the boys cry tears of happiness. Overall, great first experience at Barney's. Barney's Beanery is an old classic college bar lots of big televisions and junk on the wall. When I entered I saw it was filled with guys and felt I had been transported to the Castro district. But it was explained that it was finals week, it was just a different crowd. Came in for a few drinks late after work a few evenings ago and I just wanted to give a shoutout to the great food and amazing staff! My friend and I ordered the chicken nachos and they were amazing! I also was so happy they were still serving food considering it was well after 10pm. We also both enjoyed our drinks (although simple the bartender nailed it). A special thank you to Aaniyah for providing excellent service. She is an incredible server! Not only is she extremely personable but she was also hilarious and brought an energy to our table that was contagious and really lifted our moods! Additionally, the security guard Ben was great! He was so genuinely kind and went above and beyond to help my friend and I get to a table outside in the corner when he did not have to and we were incredibly grateful. Both my friend and I commented how much better of an experience we had right from the start just from the kindness and personality of Ben and Aaniyah. i should have read the reviews before eating at Barney's. However, nine out of ten times, I, prefer to go in to a place with an open mind and judge for myself. It's the next morning and I feel okay, but I'm still hungry. I ended up here with a friend to watch the Kings game (versus NY Rangers, 2014 Stanley Cup, Game 1). As I'm sure everyone must know, parking blows. Make sure to carry cash as I ended up at a lot where they didn't take debit cards. Fortunately the attendant was cool and let me park first - go to the ATM then come back and pay. My server was Sarah, and it was great service. It may have helped that I sat at a booth that was so close to the server's station, that I could have reached out and touched her. As busy as she was, I was able to get her attention and she was able to check up on the table without much effort. Can't speak for other areas though. At one point, I saw her tending to tables outside. Food was bad. I ordered the appetizer combo. When I'm leaving plates unfinished, that's a sign that either I don't like it; or it's bad and I don't like it. For me, it was all the above. I also chose the Philly Cheese Steak with a side of Mac & Cheese. First - bread was not stale, but definitely old and not fresh. Second - meat to veggie ratio was way off. Should be called a Philly Cheese Onions and Peppers on a bun. As for the Mac & Cheese - three tastes and I left the entire cup unfinished. Anyway, came for the game, which the King won in OT. Caught up with a buddy and had a good time overall. As a UCLA alum, this place held a special place in my heart from all the countless memories on nights out. I used to occasionally come here and grab a "boo bear" drink or two before hitting the other more upbeat dance bar around the corner. I always had fond memories of Barneys..but didn't have the best experience last time! Came here on Saturday night with my boyfriend because he wanted to watch the basketball playoffs. We started by ordering drinks and an app: I got a HH Vodka Soda and my boyfriend went with a beer. We also got Halftime Nachos! The drinks came out quickly and were tasty -- I will say all their drinks have been good in the past 5 or more years I have been coming here! The halftime nachos..on the other hand..were terrible! The "nachos" came with cheese, lettuce, sour cream, and guac. I am not joking when I say 75 percent the cheese on the nachos wasn't even melted, so it just felt like mexican cheese blend thrown on chips :/ I was super disappointed but trying to give them the benefit of the doubt, I was convinced to try another app + another round of drinks! I got a Cali Mule and my boyfriend got a canned cider. We also got the spicy chicken bites because they sounded flavorful! Everything came out quickly -- another round of drinks tasting great but food being underwhelming. They brought out the bites and honestly I was speechless. The presentation was so terrible and there had to be a total of less than 10 bites in the entire order! They looked burnt and not at all appetizing..almost like a lesser version of a no name fast food stop. You would think they would put a little effort into making the dish presentable and serving a decent size given these rounded out to $9! The taste was ok. They were spicy which l liked but the burnt outside + lack of quantity and odd chicken chewiness in some of the bites really turned me off. At this point I couldn't even think to have us dine here for dinner so after the Lakers game finished we got the check and bounced. I think that the food here has definitely gone downhill in the last year or so. Drinks are always good so I would say if you want to come to only stop here for HH or random drinks with friends rather than for food. Come on Barneys, step up your game..I know you can do better! Came with some friends to watch Titan Games and it wasn't on one of the 100 tv screens that they have there. Asked the waitress if they could change one of the tv channels to NBC and originally she said no, but after speaking to the manager(super chill dude btw) they changed the tv which was awesome. Great selection of food and beer. Can be pricey, but what do you expect from a place in the heart of Westwood? They have one game with sound on the first floor, and another on the second. I think it would be a good place for a 1 or 2 game night, like MNF. (1 star, strike) While beers are flowing (yeah) and they have a million of them (double yeah), foodwise it totally depends what you order to whether it's good or not. I had the Cheese enchilada and egg plate. It was blah, no flavor, and boring. The rice was very dried out, and the enchilada sauce tasted too much like tomato. Worst service ever! Took them forever to bring us our drinks and took even longer for them to have our food ready!!! After our food was ready, it was not even hot or warm!! What the hell man?! To top things off they messed up on my friends order and messed up the birthday boy's order as well (let me just also add other tables next to us had to complain about their fucked up orders as well). We paid 60 with three 20's and it took the waitress for freaking ever to get us our fucking change. Then she has the freaking audacity to ask "DO YOU NEED YOUR CHANGE?" Seriously???! I mean $9 is proper and a little over 15% for tip but asking your customers if they'd like their change is just flat out rude, good service or not. I'm a mad generous tipper but when she asked that it seriously pissed me off. Customers decide if they want to tip or not based on quality of the food and service. But for her to just ask that I think that was just ridiculously rude. Then she goes in telling us "Oh I'm just waiting for the bartender to give me change" and another 8 minutes goes by and she comes with still no change but just a petty excuse that the "bartender" has not prep the change yet. Barney's Beanery is a new addition to the dying (sadly) Westwood, and replaced a restaurant I never checked out anyway. This two story building was packed when my friends and I went for a quick dinner once we realized sushi happy hours were closed. Inside was loud, flashy, and fun. We were seated in a booth upstairs with a... you guessed it, TV directly next to us. There was another huge TV screen next to us playing hockey, and another with a baseball game on... did I mention there was another TV showing a golf game in the back? Anyways, Barney's Beanery serves a lot of American foods including sandwiches, salads, burgers, etc. The one problem I had with the menu was this it was BIG. You literally read it like a newspaper, and it took me a good five minutes just to flip through everything and see what they had. Most of the dishes are going to be more than $10, so it is a bit steep compared to other diner places in Westwood. I would definitely watch your wallets here, especially because there is no happy hour here either. (There is a UCLA Bruins section with $5 appetizers, but I hear the portions are small) I ordered a roast beef gravy sandwich ($10) with a side of seasoned wedges. The sandwich was actually pretty good, and was a good serving of meat on top of it. I also ordered a Barney's Brew ($3.50 for a pint) which was alright... definitely not the best tasting beer I've had, but not bad for the price when every other drink was going to cost at least $8. Bad side? Service was slow after we had ordered our food. My friend finished his meal before his water arrived... Heck! Our drinks didn't arrive until after our food was served (which took a little over ten minutes to prepare). My friend's Mai Tai was also poorly made... all of the alcohol was concentrated on the top that what was left after some big sips was the cocktail juice. Other bad side? Apparently they have the Avatar DVD playing on one channel but they forgot to press "play" on the DVD menu.... Overall, a good place to kick it with friends if you don't mind loud noise and TVs everywhere penetrating your every sight. Very good for a sports bar (+1) 2) Very large selection of beer 3) Portions on the food was very generous. This is my 2nd time at Barney's. The UCLA location is busy and loud on a Thursday game night. Plenty of tables here. And it has a dark ambience. Lots of bar seating upstairs and downstairs. Parking- we found metered street parking. My husband and I both like the Southern Fried Chicken Salad Wrap. It is huge, comes with lots of salad inside and yummy honey mustard dressing. The mozzarella sticks were nice but the marinara sauce seriously lacked flavor. It tasted like tomato purée. My breakfast quesadilla plate was huge. I normally have such a great time here!! But tonight was terrible. We walked in around 8:30. No host at the front and a sign that said "please seat yourself," not to mention that there was no one standing at the front. After sitting down for 10 mins and having a waiter give us menus and offer us water, the blonde hostess comes up to our table and tells us that there was a waitlist and that we need to leave. I've never been treated more terribly at a restaurant. She did not apologize even after acknowledging that she should have been at the front. For a neighborhood lacking nightlife, Westwood should be thankful for Barney's. It has a great, cheap happy hour with good greasy food and beers. Compared to some of the other "fancier" bars in the area, Barney's brings a welcome menu for college students with pinched pockets. We came on a Monday night during finals week so it was pretty quiet. I've heard this place is notoriously busy and lowkey gross on weekend. My only complaint?? The new go to bar in Westwood since all the other ones closed lol. It's actually a fun place to be. Check out their drink specials (each day is different). I love Mikey and Nick the bartenders. Midwest warmth is hard to find out here. Nick makes a good old fashioned and Mikey is the guy you just want to be friends with.
