Simply not good. The best thing was the pork belly and it was mediocre. Fried calamari was undercooked and had zero flavor. Four out of the five of us had steak. The hanger steak was cooked properly but came out five minutes before all the other entrees. The NY strip was overcooked and flavorless. The two ribeye specials were horribly overcooked, unseasoned, tough and overpriced. Possibly the worst, cheapest cuts of meats I've ever seen. There's a lot more that I could say and none of it would be good but I think I got my point across. To add insult to injury they charged my card $100 more than I authorized. read more

Terrible service we reserved the table by the fireplace and when we got there another party was at the table no apology or attempt to correct it the waiter got everything wrong with our orders they did not recognize the two birthdays at our table no complimentary chocolate wine after dinner and when we got home our doggie bags were not our meals!! Service post COVID has been better then my previous experiences. The food here has always been good, and the only thing stopping a high review was spotty service in the past. We went on Father's Day and the food was spot on, timely, and the service staff very attentive. I am adding Barnwood back into my restaurant rotation again because I think they've stepped it up. The food quality is better than most places in the area - I had Blue Point Oysters and Stuffed rainbow trout this last visit, and both were delicious. There were compliments about the natural burger from our party, as well as the bbq that was ordered. I did not hear a single complaint about the food, which is a good sign. The outside area was mostly shaded and a nice relaxing environment, with the chairs being somewhat uncomfortable after a while. Definitely recommend now read more

ate. here for thanksgiving with friends. ambiance and service were great however my turkey entree was very disappointing. the turkey was a mix of white and dark meat chunks. there were no slices just clumps of meat. the stuffing was extremely wet and spread over the plate. this was not what I was expecting for my traditional turkey dinner. Went for second time tonight and ordered their burger with "no aioli" and for the second time, they bring the burger with aioli. They just insist on adding that nasty mayonnaise no matter what you say. Never going back there again. Otherwise, looks like a nice place, if you like mayonnaise on your burgers. Yuck. read more

We've always enjoyed this restaurant but the food was horrible tonight. Basic. The steak should NOT be served on the skillet where it continues to cook the dish. Sitting in all its fat and under seasoned. We ordered med rare. By the time we ate it it was well done. Plus- that's so 80's. The steak also was thin and had no flavor. You can get a better steak at COSTCO. The scallops were delicious but it was because there was WAY TOO MUCH butter and salt. The drinks were were poor. Large but not good. Very disappointing how far Barnwood Grill - Newtown has fallen and it's not due to lack of staff or anything Covid-related. It's that they have made it a practice to regularly overbook. Last time it took an hour to be seated with a reservation. Tonight it was a 7:15pm reservation for two. We walked out just before 8pm. The hostesses do their best to ask for patience, but a table never opened despite being told three times they were just cleaning one off. No masks on any staff either. Just a shame that a pretty good place, which we went to with some frequency, has chosen to do business this way. Three strikes and you're out. Solid drinks. Decent food. Good staff. I haven't been here since the first wave of Covid. But nice to see this place doing good. Went back last night for some delicious seafood and drinks. Social distance tables on place. We were away more then six feet which made my family very comfortable. Waiters all masked up and one thing I really liked the Foodrunner was wearing gloves. We started with some delicious drinks to mention pear basil martini, and we followed with some wine. Appetizers were cooked to perfection fresh and delicious. For entree we chooses deferent dishes but I have SOLE filet. Fresh fish and delicious as always. Overall very happy to see people still trying hard on this hard times specially for restaurant industry. We will support as much as we can and I urge everyone to support to. Mother's day prix fix. And might I add, it was not inexpensive either. 5 of us. Three entrees were fine and looked like what you'd expect. This was my entree. 1 piece of French toast, 3 slices of banana and some bacon. I was shocked and asked for the manager. The manager came to the table and rudely told me "well how many pieces do you want? You can have two". Just not how you treat a customer. No comp was offered either. Just ridiculous. I like to support local but only those that know how to properly treat customers. There are plenty of excellent restaurants in the area that deserve our business. read more

We were looking for some place new to try for dinner with friends. Via a Google search we found Barnwood in Newtown. Wow are we glad we did!! It was well worth the 30 minute drive from Shelton. Everything was great... the service, the food, the atmosphere. The only problem was there were too many things we wanted to try! We tried an appetizer special... Tarragon Bourbon lobster bisque. Very good flavor... but missing any real pieces of lobster. It got better from there. Tuna tartar was wonderful... with obviously house made chips. Two of us had a Cod taco special. Rather than tortillas, they were on a small piece of Naan bread...genius!! Mango salsa... avocado... lightly fried cod segment... delicious. Our friend had a Sea bass dish with black rice. Since he has a problem with lactose, he requested they go easy on any butter or cream. The waiter came back after conferring with the chef. The usual sauce for the dish contains both butter and heavy cream. So they switched it to a light white wine sauce! Truly above and beyond. Last entree was purse shaped pasta, with short rib in a delicious brown sauce. Nice selection of desserts, but we were too full to try any. Our waiter Lindy was the right mix of attentive and funny! We had such a lovely time! This team is extremely attentive and hardworking. Our water glasses were full the entire time. During COVID things are different and a little odd but these guys didn't miss a beat and we had stellar service. Not only was the staff wonderful our meal was delicious. We shared the calamari which was fresh, crisp and hot. The dipping sauce was different and very tasty. Then we had the burrata which was a perfect size for sharing and everything was fresh. The arugula salad was delicious and we added steak which made it a nice meal. To finish our lovely evening we had the sticky toffee cake with salted caramel ice cream. Atmosphere can be somewhat noisy we enjoy sitting at the bar than at a table here. Food is consistent and they make great cocktails.

This place is really just an excellent restaurant for a date, or to get take out for the family. Almost all of their food options are gluten free, if this is something that you look for, and the options are varied enough so that you really have a number of choices no matter what your preference may be. Although we live a town over, I drive out of my way to go here as this restaurant is fast becoming our goto spot. Highly recommend! read more

Last night my babe and I decided to try this restaurant since it was our last day here in Connecticut... we wanted to get some real seafood and decided to come here based on the reviews... When we entered the restaurant, we were greeted by the hostess and was seated close to the middle of the restaurant on our request but not too far since there was a party of 5 already there and we wanted a little privacy.. It looked like a really slow night since there was only three tables occupied including us but hey we decided to stay.. We were given the menu then left alone for about close to 10 minutes, our waiter gave us water and that was it... it was about 3-4 waiters available so why the long wait to take our order.. I started to get annoyed, because they would look over at our table from about 10 feet and keep walking , finally I caught eyes with one of the waiters and she WAS not Friendly at all! She didn't even smile, just had a very serious face! That was it for me, I felt truly Unwelcomed! I wanted to get up and leave But decided to stay since nothing else was opened. The food came and half way thru me finishing my dinner like maybe one price of ravioli left, another waiter came by our table and ask would we like some cheese? And I look at it him like , are u serious ?!? Lmaoo I'm technically done and now u want to ask if we wanted cheese?!? He then asked did we get bread, and I'm like no! We didn't ! Weren't we suppose to get that in the beginning when we got our water. It's not like you're under staffed.. a few minutes later the grumpy old waitress who doesn't smile , asked my boyfriend would he like to wrap that to go and I look at her like with a few pieces of noodles , what's there to wrap?!? Painful and arduous experience! Perhaps Sunday afternoon is not a good time to visit this establishment. Catered events running in parallel with normal operations here. I'm not anti children however when there are children running through the restaurant and bar area during our meal it creates an unsafe condition to the staff and bothersome to the patrons. Spoke to waitress numerous times and she indicated she spoke to the manager but there's nothing that could be done about this activity. Barn wood needs to identify high-value patrons here. Barnwood opened in the past year, however I no longer live in the area. I get to visit on occasion so decided to take a peek at the new establishment. It's in the former location of both a pharmacy and bank. We weren't sure the restaurant was open when we walked up it was quite dark however it was dark apparently to set the mood. The restaurant is long and has very tall barnwood ceilings. It is minimally yet tastefully decorated. On the afternoon we ventured here, they were offering a prefix menu which included an appetizer, main,dessert and drink for $19. Both our appetizers were great. My significant other's main was also good. The other courses were not so much... however considering the bargain and the beautiful atmosphere I'd give it a better rating! Upon arrival we were greeted by an energetic and friendly hostess who quickly found us a table.  The decor was exactly as we anticipated, very warm and cozy with great lighting and lots of reclaimed wood.  They also had a guy on an acoustic guitar which added a nice touch. The waiter brought the menus and asked us for our drink orders (uh...we figured we would at least look at the drink menu first as they have some great cocktails according to their web site).  Waiter didn't even introduce himself and had zero personality.  He seemed completely disinterested in our table. He literally said nothing except are you ready to order. He came back took our drink orders and asked us for our food order. We told him just drinks, we need to check out the menu first.  I think he was in a hurry. We on the other hand, were not rushing, we were having good conversation and taking our time with the menu.  I ordered a martini with 3 olives. A different waitress delivered the drinks. I got a martini with no olive, no garnish at all in fact. I called her back and got the olive issue resolved.  No big deal but I was beginning to get concerned about the service.  I asked our waiter his name trying to get him engaged with us. He mumbled something and plowed on for our order.  There were five of us and we had different special menus, when I asked which one was correct he just looked at it and said that the soft-shell crabs are not available. I guess the special menu with the soft-shell crabs was the wrong one.  How about "I'm sorry let me get you the correct menu".  He kept coming back for our order, when he could see we were undecisive perhaps maybe offer a little insight. Nothing, the guy stood there like he had someplace else to be.   We finally ordered, then a minute later the woman who served our drinks appeared in front of our table and asked us if we were ready to order.  Wait...who is our waiter? Were they pressuring us to order? I've never had that happen before...a Jedi mind trick perhaps. On to the food. Appetizers were delivered by some other random guy and they looked beautiful.  Flavors however were hit and miss. The portabella mushroom stuffed with lobster was under cooked, so the mushroom overpowered the rest of the dish.  The whole dish was under seasoned.  The fried balata was a bit clunky but tasty, however it was accompanied by a large slice of flavorless tomato, you would think a nice seasonal native heirloom would have been more fitting.  Oysters were great. We wanted a picture of our table to remember the night out.  Our waiter was missing so we grabbed random appetizer delivery guy and he took the photo for us. Entrees were hit and miss. The bronzino, lobster ravioli, and butternut squash ravioli were all very good.  The Mahi Mahi special looked beautiful, however it had some issues.  The lobster/clam broth was completely flavorless and under seasoned, it tasted like tomato water.  The fish was absolutely hammered and was bland and dry. The shrimp on top was'nt well cooked and was mushy and fishy tasting.  They also serve many of their dishes with a giant half of russet potato...very weird garnish.  It looked like an afterthought.  A lot of diners had these untouched potatoes pushed to the side of their plate.  How are you supposed to eat a baked potato cut in half with nothing on it.  The fettuccini dish was good but the chicken was so dry it tasted like it was cooked during lunch service the day before. Also, the dish was supposed to have a pesto tomato sauce but the taste of pesto was completely absent. Dessert was fine, though I had the chocolate pecan pie and it was ice cold. It would have been much better if it was served warm or at least not the temperature of an ice cream sandwich.  We also had some Porto with desert, but it was served in a 2 oz aperitif glass, barely one sip and it was gone.  Our waiter dropped the check off then proceeded to go sit down at the bar and talk up some couple.  After we sat for an eternity he finally came back and we paid and were on our way with not as much as a thank you. I'll write off the food to a bad night, while there were some execution and quality errors, the dishes were conceptually good.  (well except for that weird potato decision).  Service however, was not good...it was terrible. BTW...there was also some guy, a manager I assume, walking around all night. He passed by our table at least 15 times and never once acknowledged us. I'm surprised by how many 5 star reviews this place gets.  There are also a lot of 2's so maybe they just lack consistency in the kitchen. But kitchen aside, they do need to do something with that wait staff.  A good waiter can make those little food issues much more palatable read more

What a little gem of a place! A friend and I were meeting up for a late dinner in Newtown and figured we would try somewhere new. These guys were open late and had a nice menu, so that was that! We sat in the bar area and our server was awesome. Super friendly and helpful with suggestions on the menu. We started off with the mozz and tomato appetizer (with REAL cheese presumably made in house - you need to order it). I then had a salad and my friend had the ravioli. It was all delish and the atmosphere made you want to stay and hang for a while. I will be dreaming of that appetizer until I return! read more

So do I focus on the many positives? Or a couple of frustrations that make this a four and not five star experience? I say the positives: good decor, attentive service (with a caveat below), and a menu that should suit every taste. Food that is very good. A mushroom risotto for just $16 that was delish. A hanger steak that was more flavorful that you would think. Plenty of kids dishes with a few choices beyond the usual. And a duck dish that my daughter ate like it was chocolate. So, you're asking, what gives? Ut sounds good. Ah, the little things that add up. 1) the $10 kids dish comes with a soda- so why the charge? 2) a waitress who couldn't remember the drink order but then gets it right. And then, servers bring over mussels served two ways. How nice, we thought. They split them up for the table to share. But no, it turns out it's just a messed up order with an extra mussels. And while we ate them all up (and I didn't complain about paying it), the waitress knew it was a kitchen mistake. You Don't charge the customer without asking. 3) I appreciate the follow up from other house staff on my meal. The 4th, how's everything, though is a bit much. 4) and if you are going to put 5 at a table, you might want to do so where the waitstaff doesn't ask us repeatedly to move in. That's a front of the house issue. 5) while the mushroom risotto was excellent, the risotto with the duck was surprisingly flavorless and flat. Would I come back again?
