Burger lacked any flavor whatsoever. Wings tasted like sweet bbq, not mango habanero. You get 9 small wings for $13. What a joke. I moved here 4 months ago and Geneva folks seem to think they have it all, but from an outsider who has lived all over the country I'd say half the places in downtown Geneva are trash. We arrived at Barrel + Rye at 8pm with the Cubs in the WS...thankful we could get a spot. The tap beers were delicious - I had a red and my husband had an IPA. We chose to share the house plate (meats, cheeses, crackers, jam, pickles), cauliflower, and elote (Mexican corn). The food was simple and absolutely delicious. If I made cauliflower like that at home, the kids would gobble it up! The only disappointment was the cheese on the house plate...it really tasted like nothing compared to everything else. My husband and I had a terrific date night at Barrel and Rye. This was our first visit to the restaurant. Loved the Tolouse cocktail, the elotes (amazing), the Southern sandwich, and the brownie dessert - these were the highlights of our night. The burger was okay, but not the best patty I've ever had. Could have had a little more to it than just mushrooms and cheese (lettuce, maybe an aioli, pickles, somethin...) Brussel sprouts were on the undercooked side - needed a little more time in the oven. I have no idea why people love this place so much?! It's baffling. The food: I have had a better burger from McDonalds. They clearly use frozen unseasoned burger patties. They are over cooked and dry. And they don't even come with lettuce, tomato and onion, you have to ask for that. Mac and cheese is just okay nothing to cry home about. The shrimp lacked flavor and the brussel sprouts were good for what they were. The bourbon: this is a joke right? You claim to be a bourbon bar yet only carry the norm? Hmmm Jack, Makers and Knob Creek are sold everywhere, come on boys where's the good stuff at?! There is nothing about this place that makes me what to go here again. I have been here a few times now because I wanted to like it but I just can't. There are so many better places in Geneva to eat that I wouldn't waste your time here. Sorry. read more

Didn't enjoy this place much at all. Food was just average and we were rushed to order. We sat at the end of the bar and during our lunch several of the wait staff brought out a salad and stood around eating it right next to me on the L shaped part of the bar about 2 feet away. Thought this was rude and totally unnecessary. Bar does not have a foot rest making it pretty uncomfortable to sit for a hour of so. I almost never saw a smile or a laugh from any of the wait staff - a pretty joyless place. And of course for a basic burger and a decent salad it was almost $50. As my third and final stop on the Geneva drink/appetizer bar hop, we settled in to the last two seats at the teeny tiny hipsterville known as Barrel + Rye. I've had this place bookmarked for ages mainly for my whiskey swilling man but also for my small plate loving heart so I'm glad I finally made it in. Unfortunately, we pigged out too much at the last two bars and I wasn't able to get my beloved poutine, which was really why *I* visited. Oh well. Of course we had room for more drinks and dessert though (who doesn't?) so that's what we had...some pie (apple and pecan) and some drinks (some whiskey something or another for the man and a Solemn Oath brew for me). I must say, I was REALLY impressed with the whiskey/scotch menu though I was sad to hear that my favorite whiskey was gone. They had pages of the good ol brown liquor, but unfortunately, I was only looking for one. Luckily they have a small craft beer tap list too (which actually had two new brews for me) so I was still satisfied drink wise. The small plates, and honestly any of their plates, looked amazing and I wish I would've just gone for the poutine after all and dealt with the repercussions later because the pie was just allllllllright and I wouldn't come knocking down the door for more. Here's the thing about this place: It's great if you love whiskey, it's great if you love hipsters (seriously...they served my beer in a mason jar and there's Edison bulbs and lamps made of old liquor bottles everywhere...'nuff said), it's great if you like to be crammed into a tiny dark and cozy bar, but if you like some space, or anything more mainstream, you should keep on stepping. I still have to come back to report on the real food but until then? I'll give them 4 stars for the whiskey list alone. read more

My review echoes some of the ones before me. This place certainly isn't awful, but it is way overpriced for the quality of food. I was super excited to try the food because of how awesome all of the reviews are for this place. But it really didn't live up to my expectations. I'd rather eat elsewhere in the Geneva area, but the drinks here are interesting. However, I don't think their interesting factor warrants their price though. I'd stop by this place again to munch on the charcuterie plate but that's about it. read more

Downtown Geneva is a great place for dinner and this place makes the best whiskey drinks around. The burgers are fantastic, full of flavor and the perfect size. Also ordered a "board" which is a meat and cheese platter with pepper jam, mustard, olives, and pickles, Everything was delicious. What a fantastic place! We absolutely love their rye whiskey, and their cocktails in general. I will recommend that you try their brussel sprouts, and cheese curds. Both are absolutely amazing. My suggestion is to get there early , or to find a seat at the bar. The wait staff has always made us feel like we were part of the family comma they are so kind and fun and always look like they're having a blast working there. This is probably my wife and my favorite place to eat in Geneva. Everything i have tried here has been delicious. They have about 8 different craft beers on draft that are rotated frequently and a ton of different whiskeys. There is not a lot of seating but a great atmosphere and you can get yourself a drink at the bar while you wait for your table. read more

I will go back to give this another shot even though this experience was...meh. Wait staff recommended favs and I didn't choose anything among them--instead I chose the chicken sharwarma. It was so full of fat that the meat was inedible. Told the waiter, who took my opinion back to the kitchen; she came back and told me that said dish is made from the thigh so *shrug*..that's that. Flavor was good though so I ate the veggies and pita that came with it. Portion was way small if you're comparing it to any other middle-eastern restaurant that serves the same dish. My beer was on the warm side. My daughter had a burger and loved it, so for that reason I will consider going back and listening to the wait staff's recommendations. read more

Bartender was quite rude, standoffish and it took quite a while to get drinks sitting at the bar. Found out that guy was actually the owner. This happened more than once, and friends have mentioned that they had similar experiences. Too bad because the food is great. My husband and I have had great meal/experiences here but this past Sunday was an exception. I have so enjoyed the salmon salad that I've ordered it every time we visit. It was always a beautifully cooked thick piece of salmon alongside the tasty salad. This time it came out obviously over cooked and so very thin. I sent it back only to receive the same thing as a replacement. Maybe chef had Sunday off? Sure hope this isn't the new normal since I've recommended this place/dish to many. read more
