We tried this place for dinner for the first time tonight...service was fantastic (wish we remembered our servers name). I had the turkey burger and fries which were amazing! The duck is amazing and the southern chicken sandwich is also very good and highly recommended. I want to try a burger next time though.

Went there on a rainy Wednesday for lunch. There was literally no where to park for 2 blocks. Doesn't anyone work any longer. Crazy. Place was almost full. Ordered from the menu. Nice options. Friendly server and the manager greeted us as well. I tried a new sandwich and had the house salad as the side. Dishes were nice. Food was plentiful and the side salad was very good. I hate to rate this place above average because I feel it will get even more popular and I will never get in again. It was full on a rainy Wednesday. In any case food was really good. B + R is a cute little townie looking spot (keyword little) with totally cool lights. Look up when you go. They had a nice selection of beers, but i was interested in learning more about the whiskeys, bourbons and ryes. Seems they don't have anyone to provide more info on those spirits. Bartenders are far too busy and the wait staff wasn't trained. I would go back, but I would like to see a better effort in educating us novices if at all possible. The food was fantastic. read more

I absolutely love this place! My boyfriend and I try to make it a point to come here every weekend as our night out dinner. There's always a wait so I suggest calling ahead but it is so worth it!! They have a great selection of food to choose from and more than enough whisky to go around! I don't make it outside of Chicago often, but was extremely fortunate to experience Barrel + Rye recently for lunch. Nice atmosphere, indoor seating space is moderate, but during warmer weather it appears outdoor tables would increase total seating materially (speculation, I did not receive explicit information from management regarding outdoor seating). In either case, the availability of outdoor seating is inconsequential to the allure as I would come here any time of the year. I had their signature Old Fashioned which was very good along with the shrimp and grits and B+ R Cobb salad. The shrimp and grits were absolutely top 2 or 3 I've ever had and, while the name doesn't necessarily come off as anything outside of middle of the road, the Cobb salad was conservatively above average and an easy choice to order again. My wife had the brisket grilled cheese which I sampled and it was very good as well. The staff was attentive, checking on us at appropriate intervals and also provided helpful guidance regarding food selections although I would say, albeit based on a small sample size, I would try the entire menu. There are a lot of venues in the immediate area for shopping making Barrel + Rye a must for a lunch or dinner break. This place can easily hold its own amongst the buzzy places in Chicago and is circled for whenever I'm going to be in the area. read more

We tried this place tonight... Due to lack of seating, over an hour wait - we sat inside and it was "so loud" that you had to yell talk to each other, very dim lighting- hard to read the menu - outside seating would be recommended unless you are just for the food and drinks! We had the black & blue burger and Korean BBQ sandwiches - the burger was good but not as good as counterpart (burger local) the Korean BBQ had little kick but was amazing! The fries were perfect crunch and the appetizer of mac & cheese was creamy and delicious. Drinks were another fav- the old fashioned had a twist of orange that had my husband particularly loving it - I rocked a Cider Boys beer - lots of food! We had one of our sons with us- definitely not a kid friendly place inside - no child menu or portion - he had a basic burger and fries but way to large and priced normal - date night place for sure and suggest sitting outside if you actually want to talk to your date. read more

Had the duck poutine and the berkshire. First off, the whiskey list is incredible. I was very impressed with their assortment, and their beer on tap was quite impressive as well. I got Lagunitas Olde Barley Wine (delicious) which is 11 percent alcohol as well for $5.50. that is incredibly cheap. Now, the one problem I had was the pricing of the whiskey itself. I felt as though it was very high. For example, I drank my fair share of well whiskey in college. I was surprised to see that they had Ten High whiskey at this place. Not only was I surprised at that, but then I was SHOCKED when it said that it was $10 for a glass. You can buy a whole FIFTH of that stuff for $10. So besides the very high markup on hard liquor, the rest was well priced because it was delicious. will definitely go back in the future. read more

I am a fan...a nice meal and a good beer selection, but one that did trend towards Pale Ales. Friendly service and a decent price. A nice treat every once and a while, but I have a slight preference for "Preservation Food" a few blocks towards the train. I was here last night -- probably my fifth or sixth visit. Barrel n Rye never disappoints. Atmosphere is cozy, but not tight. There is no better place for brown liquor in the fox valley, and maybe the burbs. House cocktails are very good and the selection of whiskeys is very good. Great tasting food complements the libations. Last night we ordered a plate of their daily homemade pies -- Apple crisp and a chocolate cream. Both were very good -- the Apple was my favorite (and I am a chocolate lover who normally doesn't go for apple pie). read more

The drinks were ok but need some improvement as some were better than others. The curds and elote were really tasty. However, my burger was not outstanding. In my opinion, if you are going to put a burger on the menu it better be one of the best burgers I've ever tasted, not a burger I can make at home. Also, the service needs major improvement. The waitress was too soft spoken and I could barely hear her. I got out of the bathroom and the woman who was going to clean it looked annoyed as she was waiting for me to get out. Had an Old Fashioned and a Manhattan. Outstanding drinks made by well trained personnel. The place is small so it fills up quick. The host working the door has to follow a ridiculous policy of calling people on the phone to tell them their table is ready. Very nice place to drink and eat. The alcohol selection is diverse and you can find most quality brands (especially whisky and bourbon). The food is also very good, nice quality for the right price. The only downside is the size, it is just a tad on the small size which means wait times can be high at peak hours (reservations are available). Would come here again. read more

I leave this review with extreme reluctance, as I'm sure our experience was some kind of freakish anomaly. We ordered the Brie cheese curds and duck poutine, two dishes that have gathered effusive praise here on Yelp. I'm sure these dishes are indeed worthy of every superlative thrown about. But I wouldn't know for sure because what we received--both the curds and the poutine--was so horrendously over-salted I couldn't taste anything (so salty it was bitter). As I write this review, my throats is literally burning. I know I should have brought it up at the restaurant, but being a nonconfrontational wimp who absolutely hates making a scene, I just kept eating. Too bad I now have enough sodium in my system to re-pave the Utah salt flats. And no, I do not have histrionic taste buds; I grew up eating my father's oversalted Chinese food, so my tolerance for salt is pretty high, and until tonight, this tolerance had not been bested. Anyway, to whom it may concern (I.e. person who made curds/poutine on 9/1/17 between 7-8 pm): go light on the salt, will ya? Maybe you had a bad day. Maybe your pet goldfish had passed away. Read the reviews so had to pay this place a visit. Really like their decor and their service is top notch! They know and let me repeat, they know how to make a cocktail! Very impressive skills and their selection is just right. My wife really enjoyed the cucumber punch and I was in love with Cedar Smoked Manhattan! We only had their house charcuterie and that was very good. We will be going back for lunch or dinner in the next couple of weeks to taste their other menu selections.
