I just moved to Gilbert this week. Someone I met recommended the Barrio Queen. The staff is friendly and my server Larissa took some time to chat with me and welcome me to Gilbert. The food was great. I had the Chile Verde which was some of the best I've had. The chips and salsa are obviously made fresh right there. Those were so good, I took some home. I like the overall vibe. My girlfriends met for happy hour and the place was was pretty empty. The young lady who waited on us was young and I will blame the management for poor training. She was slow to serve us we had to ask for silverware and napkins 3 times. The tableside Guacamole was made with a spoon and the ingredients were sparse. I had to mash and mix up the guacamole myself with the fork that we requested 3 times. She also scooped in a very small amount of pomegranate seeds and just left it on top of the unmashed avocados that didn't have any salt or pepper added. We didn't get any service after our food and margaritas were served. The margaritas were mostly other ingredients and no taste of alcohol. We had to sit at the bar to get served another drink and I don't think she even realized we moved . The bar tender had us close out her tab. The food was uneventful and just ok. The guacamole which I had eaten at another location and was wonderful was a huge disappointment. The restroom didn't have any seat covers and the toilet paper was still in the package and had to be unwrapped. I like the restaurant decoration, it's actually remind me a restaurant that I tried in mexico before. I am not sure if they are local or not but felt like a local restaurant. The food was so delicious, they start with chips and salsa , and we ordered nachos which was so delicious, that's a perfect appetizer. Their taco is so different from the one that I already tried . They have some tacos with orange juice in the recipe which was so different and delicious . they have such amazing service, Shine was an amazing waitress , she had a good attitude, answered questions nicely and even came up with a best cocktail ever, such a tasty tacos. I still think they are a bit pricy for taco , specially for taco Tuesday while u can go to a restaurant one block away and get taco for cheaper price . The salsa they serve with the chips is good, but like the chips and most everything else it lacked seasoning. They hand make their corn tortillas which is good on the one hand, but bad on the other. They come out too thick and as a result the corn tortilla flavor dominates whatever it is you're eating Elote -- exceedingly meh Grilled fish taco -- oddly tough/rubbery Fried fish taco -- ok, but not long on flavor Mole enchiladas -- ok, but, like most everything, lacking seasoning Azteca beef torta -- actually quite good, but would have been much better if the kitchen seasoned their food If they do nothing else they should buy some salt Service -- fine Price -- HOLY SMOKES!!! We were seated outside (great people watching) and served by Nicolette (phenomenal server, 10/10). The food was fantastic. Both my best friend and I ordered the three taco plate, getting six different tacos, and not one single taco disappointed. The best part was, we had six tacos to go - and every single taco reheated beautifully, and the meat retained moisture and flavor every time. We are brand new to the area, from Seattle. I wanted to check out downtown Gilbert and was craving for Mexican food so chose Bario Queen. It was a Saturday night and the wait for 2 was an hour. We wandered around until our table was ready. By this time we are starving. We were seated but no one checked on us for a long time to the point we almost walked out. Then this amazing server named Nicole the came over. She said she wasn't our server but didn't know where ours was so she would grab a manager and take care of us. Managers qere very apologetic and Nicolette gave us our first round of drinks on the house. We ordered street tacos, rice and beans. We loved the chips and salsa, better than most...the tacos were good as were the beans and rice. Even though Mike offered me ZIP to come back, I'm changing the rating to five stars. The food was still fantastic even without my beloved avocado. The margarita was still delicious even if a well sized glass, it still had the same amount of tequila in it as a larger glass would have. I still can't recommend the tortillas chips though Mike. They're hard, cold and tasteless. For the price points on the food and drinks at Barrio Queen your customers deserve great tasting crunchy chips and an amazing salsa! Those kind of tweaks can and WILL set you apart from the rest! Maybe when I visit you again I'll come find out! I live in another part of the country far from Arizona. Went in for lunch and it was PACKED! We snagged a few bar seats, avoiding the 45 min wait. The bartenders were funny and super attentive. The taco trio I had was amazing! The tacos were piping hot and each one was full with meat and an amazing sauce to compliment the flavors each meat had been roasting in. I dont know if the menu mentions it but I would not have ordered it with those. I hate the hills so it is spit out green seeds or swallow the seeds whole. Sad face. The wait staff was fantastic. Helpful ordering mild choices. Their refried beans are NOT pinto beans which their menu most assuredly did not indicate. The black beans were a disappointment for the whole table. Again I would have skipped them if their menu was better. Or tried them with a different attitude. I love trying new things, but I know I dont love black beans. Waited for drinks, then was told the drink they had on their summer selection they were out of syrup- was there to celebrate mothers birthday and that was a disappointment. Then waited for server to come back to get order, weren't given straws nor silverware or plates. Food was bland, shrimp cocktail had 5 mini sized shrimp. What a wonderful spot for Thursday date night. The margarita with rim of tajin was the perfect match with the delicious chips and salsa. The wait staff was attentive and on time with great recommendations. The Barrio Pollo burrito was to die for. The chicken was superb. I was not impressed with this restaurant. We started with guacamole,salsa and chips and the street corn. The guacamole was great , made at the table with very fresh avocados, it was great. The salsa was bland. As to the chips we disagreed ,he liked them and I didn't. That were homemade with no salt. The street corn was also blah, if you have a hankering for that go on down to Joy Ride Taco only one more block. The tacos were great. I had carne asada and he had carnitas. And to the most important part of the meal, the margaritas, it was again it was a split decision. He got a Don Julio and thought it was outstanding, I got the only light one on the menu and it was definitely light and blah. This was my second time coming to this location, and unfortunately it was terrible... the first time I went with a group of people around lunch time, our server was a female and she was great!!! Food was hot, and she kept up with bringing us chips/salsa... Last night though, my partner and I went around 10pm (an hr before closing).... We got seated at the outside table with the fire pit, which was perfect... sadly 20min past & no one came out to give water or ask for our order. We decided just to move back inside because maybe they forgot about us??? Then my partner had to ask a server if we could order food. MIND YOU... there was a total of 3 couples inside soooo???? What was happening... I'd understand if it was packed but really... should not have to ask the server for water & to order food. Over the last few months the quality of the food has diminished and tonight was the final straw we got a small bag of chips and the lid wasn't put on properly so the ceviche is at the bottom of The bag. Update 20 min after this review there was a knock at the door. The manager was here replacing the Carnita Michoacans and refunded us for our our order. Went on to apologize and explained it wasn't up to par and wanted to make it right. What exceptional customer service by the management. Very impressed with the manager tonight. Over and beyond...thank you. Now we remember why we stopped ordering from Barrio Queen over a year ago. They have yet to get a pick up order right. Sometimes the food is okay. But even when it is okay, they always forget something. Whether its tortillas or the cheese/sauce on top of enchiladas (Suizas), the dressing for the Chopped salad. Coctel De Elote corn, is still the talk of the house. The corn was huge and hard. Still not sure if it was animal feed, it was that off. Today, I wonder who cooked this and how they could serve pork that was obviously cooked days before. Yet the same dish a week ago was very good, juicy and full of flavor (Carnitas Michoacanas) and the only saving grace on the order. Oh and how can I forget the, the Aztec Burrito, the flour tortilla is raw. Not a great flavor, and $15.50. So sad to say, such potential but after spending $90 last week and $101 today and no response to last weeks order. Were DONE with this place. After being cooped up for so long due to obvious reasons, I searched for local restaurants with outdoor seating. I came across Barrio Queen, and visited the restaurant for the first time at the Gilbert location. I was elated to find out that we arrived on a day where they had live music scheduled. We enjoyed ourselves the entire happy hour as my girlfriend enjoyed various margaritas. We were also meet with excellent service from David from Colombia. Worst service ever!!! It's the Friday before Christmas weekend there's barely any customers but also barely any staff. The food we ordered came out Luke warm/the veggies were cold. They sent us over two different servers several different times after we asked about their bloody Mary mix and we still couldn't get any answers. We've now waited 10 min for sour cream. Eh. The main reasoning behind the 4 starts was the fact I ordered the large order of salsa and chips (takeout). When the chips arrived they were so stale. We were not able to enjoy them at all, which was disappointing since we also ordered the guacamole (yum). I personally did not get to try the mole but my brother had said it was way to sweet. So, I can not classify if this is true. However, the churros were the main highlight from this place. Crispy, sweet and stuffed with caramel. Ugh, I wish I had these right now. It did come with chocolate and caramel sauce on the side including vanilla bean ice cream. The real kind were you are able to see the actual vanilla bean. I wouldn't say this place is authentic Mexican but it's pretty good if you are looking for a slow introduction to authentic Mexican food. read more
