I will admit it. I am a bagel snob. Perhaps it is a result of growing up in New York, but I've always found it challenging to find good bagels in Michigan. At an old job, we had a bagel club, and I had to institute a list of acceptable places where bagels could be bought. The bagel scene in Ann Arbor has always been a bit of a surprise to me. With a student population that draws very heavily from the east coast, you would think a decent bagel place would have popped up in the campus area over the past 30 years. All of this brings me to Barry Bagels. I had heard about this place, but had never been there until I started going to a gym right nearby. I have to say that I've been very impressed - good selection of flavors, good cream cheese choices, fresh taste. More recently I have samples their muffins (OK, but nothing special0 and their onion sticks (yum!). It's still not quite as good as a real New York bagel, but it is definitely a step above the Einstein's and Breugger's variety! read more

I made a Barry Bagels run this week and decided it was time for a review. Barry's is the most convenient bagel place to our home, so I'm glad that they turn out a pretty decent product. I love me some fresh Ess-a-Bagel bagels when I'm in Midtown Manhattan, so the following review comes through that lens. Barry bagels are pretty decent for a Michigan bagel. The size is good. (more practical than the monsters that Ess-a-Bagel turns out) They're nicely chewy with only a bit of the breadiness that plagues most chain bagel places. I generally get a 'Barry Dozen' (14!) and prep them at home. With a nice selection of savory and sweet versions, everyone in my house can get what they want. Barry's cream cheese is quite good, so if I don't feel like making my own (surprisingly easy to do), I can grab a nice tub from the helpful efficient staff. The recent remodeling (2022) looks great! They used to get a good amount of sit-down lunch traffic, so the extra seating will be helpful once we're finally on the back side of The 'Rona Years. A head scratcher to me is the dearth of lox choices on their menu. While there are lox sandwiches, there are no lox-flavored cream cheese or lox by the pound options. One star off. Bacon egg and cheese on a bagel. An essential staple on the menu of any proclaimed bagel shop/deli. Or so I thought. In a never-ending pursuit of a Michigan bagel worth my Sunday morning, I walked into Barry's bagels with my hopes high. The atmosphere was promising at first: bagels piled on top of each other, a bustling deli feel, and that unmistakably bagel deli aesthetic that screams minimal effort. I love it. "And what can I get for you, sir?" "I'll do a bacon egg and cheese on an everything bagel. Toasted.", I stated eagerly. Shortly after I had excitedly given my order, however, my stomach dropped. Where is the griddle? I don't see them cracking any eggs. And why don't I smell bacon fat sizzling? This isn't good. 5 minutes later, my worst nightmare sat in front of me. A bagel that I wasn't sure had even been boiled, that circular bacon I remembered from my middle school days, cheese that hadn't been properly melted, and, the worst offense, those fake-tasting egg patties. To be frank, I would expect something like this at McDonald's, and that would be fine. But Barry's is a bagel shop and thus should hold themselves to higher culinary standards in this regard. The Bagel is good to be honest, but their service literally sucks! Usually your pick up time is close to 1 hr after your order is placed. On top it, you need to go and wait for 15 to 20 mins. This is not acceptable and they don't have a proper delivery plan. You cannot expect ppl to wait in the restaurant during Covid times. Worst experience in Ann Arbor. I recently moved to Ann Arbor, and I check this place out since a lot of people were raving about this bagel place. First, the service is terrible. They just stare at you and expect you to say what you want right away. Come on, not everyone knows your menu, and some of them don't have descriptions so I don't know what they are. I asked some questions about the menu, the employee that was helping me not only couldn't even give me an accurate description but also have an attitude of "dude, it's so obvious. why are you asking me". I interacted with this girl and the guy at the register, and both of them seem like they didn't want to work there. The vibe was like "order, get your food, and get out, and DO NOT interact with me". Second, the food was disappointing. I ordered eggles with meat and cheese. The meat, cheese, and pre-made egg is heated up in a microwave on a plastic container (a disposable type). Ok so I love bagels. I just do. When I travel, which I do a lot, bagels are easy to find. However that does not mean they are good. These were very tasty-and a nice size and roundness without being too big. I had a vanilla one which was unique and scrumptious with peanut butter for breakfast. These hold fine until day 3 which is awesome. Don't get completely hard and chewy (tough, not the good chewy). The flavor was subtle and just so different from your cinnamon raisin. I recommend it highly. The honey wheat one was fine. But try some of the more unusual varieties if you come here. They were inexpensive and friendly quick service had me in and out of here in 2 minutes. read more

My bagel egg sandwich was just average. Nothing special. Muffins were old and cold. Staff were nice and helpful.

I like Barry's. Their bagels are crisp yet appropriately chewy when toasted. They are obviously fresh and they seem to have most of the varieties all day unlike some places that do not stock enough. They have a wide selection of bagels and cream cheeses. My faves are salt and sesame. I also really like they carry decent lox as I am a lox fan and I think you need it from time to time with your bagels. My father is very fond of their onion styx so I usually will bring him a couple back when I make the trek. Barry's is convenient to Nicola's books, my car dealership and one of my fave spa places so I love the locale. If I head out to Jackson Rd I like to be able to multitask. I have never much noticed the service which means it must be ok, the atmosphere is not much to write home about but is clean and works. I usually just drink a pop with my bagel but the one time I had a cafe au lait it was good. All in all a nice stop. read more

Ever since my family moved to the Ann Arbor area 8 years ago, we've always gotten bagels at Barry Bagels. Need a bagel in the morning? Barry's Bagels. Out of bagels at home? Barry's Bagels. Gonna be in the area before noon? Best Believe we're getting Brunch at Barry's Bagels Baby. Great atmosphere, great toppings, great staff, great variety (of both bagels and other food/drink options), and phenomenal bagels. What more could you want? I know every member of my family adores both their bagel sandwiches and their bagels. When we pick up bagels for home, we tend to get Chocolate chip, Everything, Onion, Plain, and Vanilla Cinnamon bagels (Vanilla Cinnamon being my personal bias), all of which are extremely tasty. We have yet to be disappointed when venturing outside of our normal bagel order as well. When we order food there (which I always get super hyped for), my family members tend to get bagel sandwiches (as I've mentioned), and I always get a toasted Cinnamon Vanilla bagel with butter and cinnamon sugar on top. It's always so perfectly toasted, perfectly buttered, and perfectly sprinkled with Cinnamon Sugar I can feel the mass of endorphins rushing around my brain for the long minutes I savor it's perfection. I drool over it even while writing this. Pulling that magical bagel out of it's little baggie and gazing at its glistening, buttery surface is one of few purely blissful moments in my life. Few foods consistently bring me the joy this bagel brings me, and no amount of abysmal misery in my life will ruin either it's quality, nor the quality of life it imparts unto me every second I hold it in my unworthy hands. In my mind, it is the peak of bagel, and to me, nothing could be more perfect. I seriously don't think I can put into words just how much this bagel means to me (though I realize it's got a lot of good memories attached, so it probably won't bring the same feeling of nirvana to you as it brings to me, though I imagine it will come quite close). It's 2 am, so I'll quit rhapsodizing about a bagel (which totally deserves it imo), and wrap this up with a telling circumstance that proves just how good Barry's is; Barry's Bagels is 100% at fault for my crippling addiction to both carbs and cinnamon flavor, and for my snootiness about well toasted and buttered breads. Had I not been exposed to such remarkable bagels and flavors at a young age, I would not have grown to dump a layer of cinnamon over my oatmeal each morning, nor gone on to personally devour a 12-inch french baguette in an hour on multiple occasions. Antisemitism has made it Barry's Bagels - in this case from the black counter workers and the antisemitically influenced white people as well. With at least 10 people behind the counter, mostly schmoozing with each other and engrossed in activities that didn't involve waiting on customers, it was very sad to this business so poorly run. If I was the owner of Barry's I would sack the majority them - why so many people behind the counter providing so little service. If they kept the productive workers as opposed to people just standing there hostilely behind the counter, they could probably get by with 1/4 of the staff and get more work done too boot. First I go to register and I stand there for about 10 minutes and not one of the many people behind the counter greet me - all TOO busy - and then finally a black female counter worker comes over and I try to place and order and she rather rudely and abruptly tells to the back of the store next to the counter - no politeness - just flat out put in a rude abrupt fashion. Note there were barely any customers in line at the time. Then I stand there are another 10 minutes, standing about two feet away from two employees who are engrossed with each other and their task of assembly whatever - no eye contact, no effort to greet or to help. Finally I say, "I've been standing here for a while, why isn't someone offering to help me?" One of these employees, a white male, says "I was in the middle of doing something" but manages to break free from their engrossing task to help me. I try making a joke to the guy waiting on me and mentioned I was an actual Jew placing an order for a plain bagel and plain cream cheese, traditional, and the black counter worker makes a snide remark about me in front of me to the person waiting on me while I am standing there. I say in the direction of both of them, "That was rude." Then I go up to pay and another black female employee is saying loudly, "Don't expect me to be nice today" loudly to another employee. Saying it so loudly it was almost as if she was directing out over the counter towards customers in a passive aggressive fashion. I responded, "If you aren't feeling like being nice then you shouldn't be working with the public." Incredibly unprofessional, Barry's is being taken for a ride by its horrible, hostile counter staff. Sorry but a Jewish customer at a bagel place shouldn't have to take passive aggressive antisemitic crap. Apparently the racist employees have decided that Jews aren't welcome there and they obviously get some sort of charge out of dumping on and putting down Jewish customers. I don't plan to return. If you want to make a trek for the best bagel on the planet, go to New York Bagel on Orchard Lake Road, in West Bloomfield, in the heart of the Jewish community. Barry's is a BSO, bagel shaped object, in comparison - this particular location of New York is the real deal and they are extremely nice to EVERYONE, regardless of race, creed, color, or religion. Addendum to original review - I don't go out of my way to write bad reviews but my treatment at Barry's was horrendous and really upset me, prompting this review. I just read the owner's reply which evidently was swift - he must police the reviews and with good reason. No apology - instead an attempt to discredit my review and a more or less personal attack. His rudeness, attempting to discredit a legitimate review and deny what I experienced, explains much. Clearly this bad attitude flows from the top down and bad behavior is tolerated and covered up. I'm a huge fan of bagels and these are better than all the ones I've tried in Columbus! They are huge and since we didn't have a toaster at the hotel, I was already expecting them to not be that great but turns out these taste fabulous even when not toasted and for being a lover of extra crispy (twice toasted) that says alot. Great texture and flavor, fresh and the new oreo cream cheese get 5 million stars from me! God was that good, I could eat that straight from the bowl all day long and put it on everything. Prices are descent at 99 cent a bagel, cheaper if you get more. The cream cheese was less than $2 for the fourth a pound that I got. I had the chocolate chip, blueberry, cinnamon raisin and vanilla something and all of them were great. They had some great looking savory ones but since i got the oreo cream cheese I didn't want to pair that with the amazing looking roasted onion, so I'll save those for next time! read more

I have not been in this place for years, I used to go regularly when I had little kids. I stopped going because of the price. Today I found myself near there needing lunch and bagels for home, so decided to try it again. Although the food is good, the system is ridiculous a server greets you at the counter and takes care of your order to the end. If you end up with a surly teen who doesn't know her stuff??? oh well! I asked if I could but a Barry's dozen which gives you 2 extra bagels and if I could then use two of said bagels for my sandwiches...clearly this would have stressed this young drop outs math skills so the answer was no???? WTF??? So I wanted poppy seed bagels which are not offered at the other bagel shop locally but they only have egg poppyseed bagels. When I ask about that, I have eaten egg bagels before... She says they are called egg bagels but don't have eggs in them, again??? WTF egg bagels traditionally have egg yoke in them like 8 yokes for a recipe of 12 bagels, what is making the bagels yellow? Food coloring? That was not a rhetorical question but she looked at me like I had sprouted horns right there before her eyes. Maybe they should just call them yellow and poppyseed bagels? Maybe the girl doesn't know that yokes are eggs? Either way if you allergic to eggs or yellow food coloring I would be concerned about eating there. I have eaten in this place many times but never wrote a review, don't know why. It has been one of the best bagel place for me since the first time I ate here. They have huge variety of bagels and everything is very fresh. Quality of the ingredients are superb. The other day I ordered onion bagel with turkey pastrami, lettuce, tomato, onion, honey mustard and mayonnaise. It was super delicious yet simple bagel sandwich which is quite feeling. I ended up buying another one to take home for my husband. They serve nice coffee too. The most important thing is the service. Each and every time the service I got was top notch. This place is big with plenty of sitting arrangement with self service. But they have a warmth. Each staff treat you like they know you for ever. At least I get that feeling all the time. The menu is quite big so you need some time to choose or to be sure what you really want. They do have lots of sweet options too. Muffins, cookies. Lots of other drink options and salads too. Although I always opt for their bagels. One time I ordered one sandwich with tons of stuffing in it and it didn't had that magic . So my suggestion would be choose what ever bread or flavor or meat you want but go with simple ingredients. There that magic happens . The pricing is modest specially the food, quality and service you get I would say it's a cheap place in that term. The parking is free too which is again another big plus for me. I placed an online order on a Sunday- the estimated pick up time was an hour after the order. I arrived at my pick up time and asked for my order and was told it had not started yet- the woman who helped me was less than accommodating or helpful stating "she could start it now". The bagels are pretty good... and not in a "Panera bagels (or Zingermans) are the best" way. Like a real, I'm from NJ - the bagel state - they boil these bagels way. They get their stars for bagel and schmear quality. Though the toppings on the everything bagel are sometimes skimpy. The following is a 'know before you go' disclaimer. I have never received an order that was 100% correct when ordering to go. Usually the wrong variety of bagel, and sometimes the wrong flavor of cream cheese. Stopped in for a dozen (got a Barry dozen=14) on a Fri morning. The line wasn't too long, but whoa were they super slow. Took over 20 min to move through two patrons ahead of us. Great selection of bagels though. The bagels were very fresh. They were a little too soft, but otherwise flavorful. Didn't try any of the sandwiches, which seemed a bit overpriced for what I saw folks getting. My breakfast spot of choice is Dimo's Deli, but they are closed Tgiving weekend. I was here half an hour before noon. There was already a fairly long line. There are so many different bagels. I recommend looking at every single bagel before ordering. I was going to order an onion bagel with tomatoes, lettuce, and bacon. BUT I saw their bagel dog picture in line! Scrapped the bagel sandwich and got myself bagel dogs. The bagel dogs are pretty big so try not to eat with your eyes like I did. One was more than enough for me. If you have tried Auntie Anne's pretzel dogs and think that the bagel dog is about the same size, no you are wrong. The bagel dog is much larger in width and length. The bagel portion is good but a bit plain for my liking. There is also a lot of bagel for the bagel dog. The hot dog inside was good and flavorful! The bagel dog also comes with a pickle which balances out the dryness of the bagel dog. I didn't mind the bagel dog. I would get it if I was craving hot dog. He just couldn't believe I'd pass up a chance at Barry's Bagels, and golldarnit...he was spot on. This is a damn good place for a bagel fix, and they move it along right quick, too. A great spot for a cuppa joe and carb balls...most definitely, a winner. Cheap, too...my bagel toasted with generous heaps of cream cheese was just over $2. Service is fast, if a little unenthused...but hey, I'd be grouchy too if I had to watch OTHER people eat these bagels all day, so I'll let it slide.
