There's no question these are my favorite bagels in Ann Arbor. I've been coming here since I was a tiny little kid, and have yet to be disappointed. I'm not really into bagel sandwiches. In fact (gasp!) I'm not even into cream cheese. However, I do think that bagel texture is important! And that's where Barry is waaay above the rest (Bagel Fragel may come close). When toasted, the outside of Barry's bagels have that light crispiness, while the inside is still slightly dough-y. Mmmm... just thinking about it make me want to have a toasted salt bagel slathered in butter right now. But, tough luck for me, bagel places aren't exactly open in the late evening! Sometimes there are helpers who seem a little young - like maybe they are local high school students, and sometimes you catch some gossipy-ness, but hey, they get you your bagels reasonably fast, so I can't really complain! Oh, they also have Odwalla and assorted other juices, too. Plus, they have wifi, though when there are little kids running around it's not exactly the most peaceful place to work! My mom and I visited Barry's today to get lunch for a group of people helping my sister and her family move. We had no idea how many bagels we wanted or what kinds. The employee waiting on us was super helpful! She was very patient in talking us through our options and efficient at getting the bagels sliced and packed to go. We ended up with a Barry's dozen (14 bagels), a large tub of cream cheese, a bunch of apples, and one small coffee (it was early I needed some caffeine). The total price was $25 which was extremely reasonable. The bagels were absolutely delicious!! My favorite was the sun dried tomato bagel, the asiago cheese came in a close second. I was also a huge fan of the hazelnut coffee. I will remember Barry Bagels for the next time I'm in Ann Arbor. Definitely recommend! read more

I used to go to this place every Sunday for a few years, with good reason. They have an awesome setup. They do bagels and coffee, and also have a full deli. This makes for a wonderful breakfast experience. They do a whole line of breakfast bagel sandwiches, as well as cold pasta salads, deli sandwiches, and anything else you could think of that comes out of a deli. I've had just about everything they make, and it's all amazing. But the breakfast bagels still hold a special place in my heart. Someone from Mc D's must have had breakfast here once, and then tried to copy Barry Bagels' breakfast. These are inspiring bagels stuffed with egg, cheese, and whatever else your heart fancies! And I'd have to give them full stars based on the fact that they were always cheap breakfasts. Even when I ordered two breakfast bagels, two sides, and coffees it was never more than $12. I'd spend more than that at a coney! And that's never good... It's a five minute or less drive out of downtown, and well worth the effort. The reliable place you can get through in 6.5 minutes and end up with a good breakfast sandwich, a scrumptious lemon-poppyseed muffin and coffee that will make your hair stand on end. The best bagels in town- the cinnamon vanilla is the best I've ever had and I'm lucky it's here. The chocolate muffins.. to die for. This is a townie favorite that hasn't changed a bit since my childhood. Therefore they operate like a neighborhood store- there's usually a line and no one is really hurrying. This is the most amazing bagel place! I usually get a breakfast sandwich (with meat, egg, cheese) here on the everything bagel. If you ask, they can warm it up for you or toast it. You can only get 2 toppings on the breakfast sandwich though, but that is usually enough for me, and it is cheaper than a regular sandwich with meat. I suggest, if you don't want to stand in line, placing an order in advance. They have a pick-up counter that I make good use of. The line tends to get long, and making a bagel sandwich with quality takes a few minutes, so be prepared to wait if you don't place the order within 25-30min in advance online. These bagels are the best in Ann Arbor. The place has a hard working freindly staff and has been providing great service to Ann Arbor residence my whole life and has never changed! When I used to work on this side of town, I'd eat Barry Bagels once a week, either on my own dime or when co-workers would bring in a bag for everyone. I like their wide selection of bagels, and the coffee is good here, too. The store is always packed with regulars when I come in around 8 a.m., but they always manage to serve everyone pretty quickly. My favorite is to get their "Eggel," which is a bagel with a scrambled egg. I always got mine with cheese, but you can also add sausage. I liked that I could mix and match bagels and cheese varieties and never eat the same sandwich twice. One time I might get the sun-dried tomato bagel with havarti, and another time I'd get the dark pumpernickel bagel with swiss. They're delicious but a little greasy, so have plenty of napkins on hand if you plan to eat one of these. read more

After all of these years it's still a local favorite and it's easy to see why: 1) High quality and wide selection of bagels, soups, and related foods. There are too many types of bagels to list here, but throw two random ingredients that could possibly be related to bagels, add "bagel" to the end of the two ingredients, and they probably have it. 2) Service. The person who takes your order is the person who creates your order is the person who takes your payment. You have a SPOC (single point of contact) for your entire experience, minimizing misunderstanding and optimizing your enjoyment. This is, hands down, my favorite bagel shop. I've been going here since I was a little kid and it's always one of the things I would look forward to when visiting Ann Arbor. Now that I spend most of the year up here, I can eat at Barry's whenever I want and it's just as good every time. It's a nice place inside, always very clean, smells like bagels being cooked, and not too loud. You wait by the counter for someone to take your order, so be prepared for a line. Even if the line goes to the door, it will only take a few minutes and is definitely worth the wait. There is a very wide selection of bagels and just as many choices of toppings. There are flavored cream cheeses, sandwiches, and eggels to name a few (an eggel is a toasted bagel with a grilled egg, cheese and optionally meat). There's really nothing there I wouldn't eat, everything is great. The only complaint I have about the menu is the cost of a sandwich. My sandwich (which has no meat, a little cheese and what should be free toppings) costs close to $8. That is the ONLY complaint I have here though. You can get a dozen bagels (14 to be specific) for the same price. There is a wide selection of juice, milk, soda, coffee and flavored water as well as a good selection of sides like chips, potato salad and macaroni salad. These aren't the thin, tasteless bagels you'll find at Panera, but thick, flavorful bagels that are often right out of the oven. Whether you're in Ann Arbor for the day or if you live here year-round, Barry Bagels is a must. I cannot recommend it highly enough, no other bagel shops can compare. Bring your laptop or iPad and enjoy the free WiFi and the delicious food, you will not be disappointed. read more

Bagels of your childhood? They don't exist any more. Deal with it. But you can get some good modern bagels (the huge fat kind), salt sticks, bagel or deli sandwiches, muffins, and not-bad coffee or soft drinks here. Better than Panera bagels IMHO, but of course bagel quality is as contentious as politics. Also, Barry's offers a nice area to sit and talk with your friends -- in fact I think maybe they have new chairs. Then you can browse Nicola's Books or the library or T.J.Maxx and have a nice little shopping day. Also there's free wireless access in Barry's. All in all, it's a pleasant little mall: not pretentious, no excessive expectations, just pleasant. read more

I remember when a dozen bagels at Barry's was $3 (.25/ea). Well things have changed, but the bagels are still the best. Whenever I am in Toledo or Ann Arbor it is a must have. I waited 33 minutes for two bagels toasted with cream cheese. It's hard to even try to be this slow. Seriously if you think your gonna be able to run here real quick before work or on lunch think again. If you do go here and want to test your patience order at least an hour in advance. Good bagels, even better customer service. We get 3-5 dozen bagels delivered from Barry Bagels every Thursday. Two weeks ago, for the first time as far as I know, our order was wrong (one flavor had been swapped for another). I shrugged it off, mistakes happen. Well, it happened again this week, so I called them about it. The guy on the phone was very apologetic, and said the missing bagels would be there in 20 minutes. A delivery guy came exactly 20 minutes later with the bagels... AND a dozen free cookies (the s'mores cookie is AMAZING). Not only that, but they called me a little later to make sure I got the bagels, apologized again, and said they put a note about the mistake on our standing order so it hopefully won't happen again. Every time I go in there I have never been disappointed. Barry -- can I call you Barry? First, I love your bagels. They're delicious! Fresh and perfect. Wonderful, friendly staff. It's fun to watch the bagel-making in the back. I have just one simple tweak of a suggestion: When a person takes your order, they should ask for your first name and let you know that they'll call you when it's ready. This signals to the customer that you can have a seat, relax, and that they're done at the counter. Badda bing, badda boom! The system today works like this: 1. A friendly person takes your order, and walks away. 2. You stand there, wondering if you're supposed to pay now (you're not, not yet, you pay when your order is ready). 3. You shuffle forward towards the cash register wondering if you're still in line. 4. You feel a little anxious about whether or not the cluster of people ahead of you are in line or not. 5. Once you arrive at the cash register, you try to make eye contact with a different friendly person. They engage and ask if you've been helped. Kind of? You've been 50% helped? 6. You now shuffle around in a loose cluster by the cash registers waiting 5-10 minutes for your order. Other people step in front of you to be rung up. No big deal, but causes a bit of anxiety your first few visits: Are you in the way? Are they cutting you in line? 7. Finally that first friendly person from #1 reappears with your order, hands you your food, and rings you up. So! Just taking each person's first name and calling them once the order is ready would allow folks to relax, have a seat, and chat with their friends / family for a few minutes as they wait patiently. I found out about Barry Bagels through Doordash a little while ago, and I've been obsessed ever since. I've ordered delivery for lunch at work a handful of times, and I've been inside the restaurant a few times as well. Everything I've tried has been absolutely delicious. My go to is a turkey pastrami on a pumpernickel bagel, but as I said previously everything I've tried has been amazing. This past Friday, a coworker and I ordered lunch from Barry through Doordash, but with the coronavirus pandemic we're currently going through, Doordash was overwhelmed and the app stopped working. About an hour after I ordered, I didn't have any updates from the app so I called the store. They said my order had been received and made, but they hadn't heard anything Doordash. I tried to contact Doordash through the app, and the customer service number but both were unavailable. About 15 minutes later, I got a call from Laura, the owner of the store and she said she would delivery order to the VA hospital where I work. Shortly after, Laura showed up with my order and I got to enjoy my delicious lunch. This is 100% the best customer service I have ever experienced and I'm not being hyperbolic at all. Thank you Laura for your kindness, words really cannot express how amazing my experience was. You provided me a ray of light on an otherwise crummy day. Quick and efficient Barry is my go to spot for bagels when the mood hits. Because when the mood hits, it can't be ignored. Blame it on my being from New York. Big selection, always properly staffed, very friendly. What your corner bagel shop should be. My only complaint? Barry Bagels is a place I grew up with in Ann Arbor. I've been there so many times when I was younger, it was always an affordable option for good food. Times have changed. Money over. everything seems to be the motto. Prices are quite high, while what you get for your money is very little. I ordered a veggies hummus wrap and received literally half a cup of food in a wrap the size of a smart phone. This place is ridiculous now. Maybe the ownership changed. I didn't really want to like this place. The service as others have mentioned is not spectacular. That being said, they make a fine sandwich. The bagels are really good. Something about this place, if I'm on this side of town with 7 or 8 bucks to blow I don't mind blowing it here. I say the sandwich is a little overpriced but the fare is unique and well executed to the point that I just don't care. I'm going to have to get a couple of onion styx next time I'm there.
