We went to Barry's last weekend with friends and enjoyed it. Good old fashioned breakfast food. I enjoyed my breakfast burrito. But, my friend really scored with the corn beef hash. The portion was huge and fried to a crispy crust. Excellent. The maple sugar bacon was also a big hit! Service was friendly and efficient. My coffee cup was never empty! We sat in the section near the windows on a cold day; bad idea, it was pretty frosty. Next time we'll sit in the main section of the restaurant. read more

Well I went there for dinner instead of breakfast - Maybe that was the mistake. However, even if the food is really good at breakfast the place still does need a thorough cleaning. We went for dinner and had burgers and grilled wrap. Our bill was around $25.00. For $10.00 sandwiches I expected much more. The food was OK. I guess I would give it a 3 out of 5. Much better burgers in town for a lower cost. The Service was actually pretty good. I would give it a 4 out of 5. Finally the actual restaurant is in great need of a complete thorough cleaning. They have the place filled with firefighting memorabilia which is very dusty, and all looks to have a oily / greasy film on everything. The one room also appears to also be a tribute to Jim Long, I felt like I was in someones living room. My husband and I dine here regularly (at least once per week), and we love having a nice little go-to place where the staff is friendly and knows your name! The food is also great. Breakfast is good, but I think lunch is even better! If you go on a weekend between 10 and 11, expect to wait. But, the managers are great about ensuring wait times are minimal (usually 10-15 minutes or less). The best thing on the menu is their burgers! They are hand-patted and are best with cheese, slaw, and chili. The staff and cooks will also accommodate requests that are not on the menu hassle-free. One of my favorite non-menu items is a chicken tender salad. One other really cool thing is that they give a discount to firefighters and the owners do a lot to support the local firefighter community! I had their Fireman's Breakfast. I won't be ordering any of their breakfast items again. They call their unappealing country potatoes, hash browns. They're not hash browns though. They're seasoned, country potatoes, frozen from a bag, and they're gross. The pancakes were difficult to cut, and proved even more difficult to eat. There is no maple syrup. They offer "breakfast syrup". The ingredients for the breakfast syrup are corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, water, salt, caramel, caramel color, natural and artificial flavors. No thanks. Even the scrambled eggs were awful. They were overcooked and cold...not a good combination for scrambled eggs. Only the bacon was good. We are new to the area, so we thought we'd check this place out. There was a line out the door which I took as a good sign. The service was great and the food was delicious. I had a scrambled egg, grits and biscuits with a side of heavy. So yummy! My husband had the meat omelet with a side of hash browns. Kids had the Mickey Mouse pancake which was huge! The only downside is it cost us $50 including tip for our meal. Next time we will skip the mozzarella stick app and make our kids get water (drink wasn't included with their meal). Yep. I'm a fan! Usually I am resistant to the idea of going out to breakfast because I've been up for hours and had to eat something already before the rest of the household is ready to go, but the other day I was moving rather slowly and I really didn't feel like cooking a weekend breakfast (hmmm...I sound kind of lazy...maybe my coffee just didn't kick in yet! Really!). My husband wanted to take us into downtown Raleigh, but I figured our toddler wouldn't survive the drive and potential wait times at the restaurant so I was hoping one of the spots I had bookmarked for potential would be a hit. We were pleasantly surprised with Barry's!! For a Saturday morning, it was bustling inside. We got in right before a few other parties arrived and were seated within a few minutes. My daughter loved "the man" statue (the fireman) in the front of the restaurant and almost didn't even want to go to our table when it was ready! We were seated in the back room with a TV (my daughter would offer a few extra stars just for the fact that Dora the Explorer was showing!), and it was actually a little quieter back there than in the front of the restaurant. Our server was **genuinely** courteous and helpful -- amazing! The menu had a variety of options for breakfast and we ended up with lots of food. The children's menu had two breakfast options, and there were quite a few lunch items too. I like that there's an allergy-free menu, and after skimming a few other reviews I'm going to need to have my husband try a burger here. I was very happy with my blueberry pancake too -- usually breakfast places just kind of disappoint me because I can cook my favorite breakfast items a ton better than some places I've tried, but the big blueberry pancake I had was fluffy and had a nice crisp outside...oh, and it was packed with blueberries too. It was really good! I also like that it wasn't a mountain of pancakes, but rather one GOOD one. Quality over quantity always wins in my book!! I'd definitely go here again and maybe even try some menu items that usually disappoint me elsewhere -- GREAT potential here!! I had some mixed feelings about this place after reading the Yelp reviews. Pretty high variability in ratings. But I had a craving for breakfast, and this Barry's was open and close. The verdict? I liked it. It's your typical old-style dive diner. It's the sort of place where when you walk in, you know exactly what you're going to get. Cool vibe. The decor strikes me as "Grandma and Grandpa are VERY proud of their firefighter grandson." It's full-on firefighter decorations, but it can best be described as "cute" rather than "manly." I thought the service was fantastic. My drink was never empty (which is hard to accomplish) and my food came out quickly. No complaints there. I did come at a weird time, but I was still very happy with the service. Food was pretty good. My Wester Omelet was a little overcooked, but big, fluffy and tasty. We came here for breakfast on our second morning. We got a kick out of the decor, which is all firehouse themed. The waitstaff was warm and polite. I ordered a pecan pancake, corned beef hash and a cup of coffee. Heather ordered a half order of french toast, with the intention of ordering more later. The pancake I got was plain (although fairly good), and the corned beef hash was from a can. We flagged down the waitress, who apologized profusely. I should have asked if the corn beef has was fresh, so I felt this was my fault. Still, she took off the corned beef hash and the original pancake, and told us to keep them. She quickly brought out a pecan pancake, which had a ton of pecans--practically encrusted in them. The pancakes were thick, buttery and moist. (One pancake is enormous--it's all you need.) The french toast was nothing special, though certainly not bad. The corned beef hash was not what I had in mind. The coffee was standard diner fare, and they kept the refills coming on quick. Because they took so much off the bill, our final total was $11, which covered a coffee, one pancake and a half-order of french toast. On my way out, they gave me a big cup of coffee in a to-go cup. I certainly can't fault their hospitable and welcoming waitstaff, and I thought hard about what rating to go with. I say surprisingly only because when I first read other reviews about this place it sounded good but then when I got there I wasn't too sure if I was going to like it or not. I say that because I made some assumptions before even stepping foot into the place. The strip mall that Barry's is located in is nothing exciting nor appealing. So, that was my 1st hesitation and then we still decided to maybe give it a try. Ok, so when we first walked in there was nothing exciting there either, just average fixtures, actually some look like they could be replaced. Decor, firemen theme. Here's what I liked most about Barry's. They have a very, very casual and inviting atmosphere. You feel like you are at your close friend's house just hanging out having a good home cooked meal. You don't have to worry about being over or under dressed, they will take you as you are as a true friend would. We had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated, once we were seated and had our ordered taken the wait was a little longer than expected to get our food, but it was crowded in there and since it is made to order that would explain the wait. We were seated near the open kitchen area, and it was nice to see the food being prepared right in front of you. The waitress was very nice and had a southern sweetness to her. I ordered the Barry's Burrito, based off of my waitresses recommendation for taste and popularity and I am so glad I did. That thing was good and very filling. The burrito had eggs, onions, tomatoes, sausage and cheddar cheese with salsa and packaged sour cream on the side with pre-cut hash brown potatoes on the side. The burrito was seasoned just right. Even though the burrito was very good and so were the hash browns considering they were not fresh cut potatoes, but I would have preferred real cut potatoes for hash browns and non packaged sour cream on the side. Even the ketchup and syrup that was sitting on the table was pre-packaged. I know because of convenience and speed is why they have packaged condiments but I think it would give you a better overall feeling about the place if it were bought out with your food in a small portion cup. Other than my pet peeve about the packaged condiments Barry's definitely hit the spot for breakfast that Saturday morning and I'm glad I didn't go on my first assumption because I would have missed out on a good breakfast. I went here with my Burger group on June 11, 2014. I took a poll of the group and based on very subjective criteria I scored them in several different categories on a scale of 1 to 10. BUN: 6.7 BEEF: 7.0 CHEESE: 7.9 EXTRAS: 6.5 AMBIANCE: 6.4 ACCURACY: 8.6 SPEED: 8.5 VALUE: 7.3 OVERALL SCORE: 7.2 if I equate the 7.2/10 score to the 5 star rating it becomes 3.6 Stars. Barry's is probably best known as a breakfast place; but they have pretty good burgers too. Unfortunately what we learned was starting July 2nd if you want a burger you'll have to go for lunch; they are closing for dinner from that point on. Not that I blame them. The restaurant was fairly empty when we were there last night. But about the burger... The options are limited - based really on size. Otherwise you can add lettuce, tomato, and onion. I've also heard if they are in a nice mood they might add an egg as well. This limited collection of toppings though really allows them to focus on the fundamentals which they do a pretty good job of. The bun is buttered and toasted - an art many places seem to have forgotten how to do correctly. The cheese selection is adequate and melted to perfection. The beef is the right blend of quality and grease that makes you appreciate the meal. The only thing I thought was needed was a touch of salt; but otherwise this is a really solid burger. As for the rest of the stuff; it's a diner/cafe. So you get a small town homey feel with friendly staff and a free cookie at the end of the meal (though they may only do that for dinner). So we had previously lived about a quarter mile from this place and had never noticed it before! It is located in a very nondescript strip mall. The place was a bit crowded but was well managed by the wife of the owner, Barry. The cafe is lined with firemen memorabilia and collectibles from all around the country. I initially assumed that he may have been a fireman at some point of time, but it looks like he is an advent support of firemen across the country (look up his story on his website. Its worth a read and quite inspiring) The service is super quick, the menu is just about right without too much confusion. As an egg-itarian I didn't have much difficulty in finding choices for brunch. The coffee is wonderful and the portions on the omlettes and pancakes are right. I had been wanting to go to Barry's again for quite awhile. This his how good this place is. I had been fighting a stomach bug and I wasn't sure I could keep anything down. I like their hamburgers so much I ate one even though it probably was against my better judgment. Just the taste of the burger made me feel better. I was able to keep it down and even if I did get sick later I felt it was worth it. I almost wanted to eat two. The service was great as always and I love the atmosphere of the place. This cute family oriented breakfast/brunch spot blew my mind. This spot looks small from the outside but can really hold a lot of people. I went with 2 of my friends and we were all satisfied by the time we left. Before going we were debating on a place to go. We were originally going to go to big Ed's market- also a very good place. But my friend suggested Barry's Cafe because they had gluten free pancakes, and I was craving some pancakes. So good. I have chocolate chip pancakes and grits and paid 10$ for my meal. That's a deal. Barry's is one of my (if not the top) go to breakfast places in Raleigh. I can walk here from my house, which is not only an added perk, but makes it super convenient when it's nice outside, or during a winter storm and I don't want to drive. Everything I've had there has been delicious, classic diner food, and I find myself begging my fiance to go there weekly (even when he doesn't want to). In the winter, I like to sit at the stools overlooking the line cooks - it's warm and cozy, and you get to enjoy your breakfast while watching others being made. In the summer it's a bit too hot for that location, so sit anywhere else. Everyone is incredibly friendly and make sure that you get exactly what you want. I typically order an egg platter, poached, and then change around the meats and sides. As someone who usually doesn't like omelets, theirs are delicious (and huge) and are easy to share with someone else. The jalapeno bacon is awesome on BLT's or in a grilled cheese and tomato sandwich. I've never had a bad experience, and I'm going to keep loving Barry's for a long time. If classic family diners are your thing, Barry's is as good as it gets! Despite the plethora of seating, there is usually a small wait on weekend like everywhere in Raleigh. They have a great selection of classic breakfast items (think waffle house menu) as well as some others like the breakfast burrito and biscuits. Service is fast and the food is well priced, would recommend for a family breakfast since they have crayons and tvs playing kids shows. The milkshake also looked very promising, but we were too full to try it. Great place for filling up with family, but don't come here if you're trying to be fancy/in the mood for mimosas. read more

Love me some Barry's! We have been here a dozen times in the past few years, and it is always a good meal. The servers are attentive even when the restaurant is full and people are waiting. The biscuits are light and fluffy. I usually get the western omelette, Which is essentially a meat and cheese omelette with onions and Green peppers. The hash browns are good. Horrible...I went inside to order Togo -- I was told I can't order Togo on weekends so I asked for a table so I could just get a Togo box when the food was ready. The OWNER then snatched my menu out of my hand and told me she wouldn't serve me-- I asked to sit down in her restaurant and she told me. I bc she has one cook all the while she's still taking names for the people waiting at the door -- so you refuse me service bc I am asking for a Togo box!!! Went here for brunch, what a great choice! The decor is fantastic, the entire place is covered by firefighter paraphernalia. Definitely a lot to look at while waiting for the food. Don't expect gourmet plates, but the food is extremely filling, delicious, and a great price.
